After a small wait the waiter showed us to a table. Before we had the chance to sit down or take our coats off he was asking for our drink order. Is it too difficult to afford you the luxury of sitting down and seeing a menu before hassling for an order. On the plus side the food couldn't be faulted

We expected to queue given it was Sunday lunchtime and waited about 10 minutes which wasn’t bad. We got a table for 3 plus toddler. We ordered a burger for the wee one and when it came it was cremated on one side so we ended up slicing off the burnt side so she had something to eat. Our meals were fine except I asked for no chips but extra veg and they didn’t materialise. No waitress appeared after our order arrived to point all this out. We were going to have dessert and drinks but never got a chance to place an order.

It took five minutes to be seen waiting as required and then waiter filling in contact details in longhand until shown to a table. Three staff front of house, 4 other people in already drinking r and waiting for food. 2 customers paid and left. 2 bacon rolls served to one of the tables, 2 coffee to another. One other customer arrived. And that’s all that happened! I left after 20 minutes as no one came to take my order. Politely disinterested sums staff up. Popped down the road for coffee and scone Garden Wise. Two staff, more people to serve, quick and cheerful. Know where I’ll be returning.

This place is a regular stop off for us. The food is fabulous, you must try their beef. The staff are really friendly. Whilst it's always very busy we have never been kept more than a few minutes for a table. The social distancing/ sanitising aspect has been really well addressed without taking away the ambience of the place. Access in a wheelchair or mobility scooter is excellent as are the disabled loos. I am gluten intolerant and there is always plenty of choice including gf bread, buns and cake. Would highly recommend lunch here and there is a fabulous farm shop/ gift store as well.

Two of us lunched here today for the first time. It is a lovely spacious cafe style restaurant with an open rural aspect with calves wandering in the field coming to feed and birds visiting the feeders which can be seen through the window. The choice of food is really good and the quality is excellent as well as good value for money. The staff are friendly and helpful. This was our first experience of Kilnford Barns restaurant but it will certainly not be our last. A craft shop and farm shop are also on the same site with a wonderful choice of gifts and foodstuffs.

Have been here a lot over the years...really want it to be great, but have had a few disappointing meals. Today was one of the disappointing ones. Breakfast was lukewarm on cold plates, so food was cold. Black pudding overcooked and hard, bacon nice but tough..difficult to cut through. Fried egg cooked to perfection but cold. Beans cold. Coffees tepid. My feeling is they have had to cater to volume of orders by precooking everything then keeping it warm somewhere...so it all starts to go bit hard and dried out. Then gets served on a not hot enough plate. Result, cold dry food. Really lets down what could be great. Please sort this out. It has put us off coming here again as breakfast is not cheap.

Needed somewhere to stop for the kids to grab some lunch and stretch their legs and this didn’t disappoint. We found it on google as we were looking for somewhere with a play park and we had a lovely experience. The menu was great, lots we’d all eat and very reasonably priced too. The outside play area is fantastic, lots of hidden walkways, swings, a slide, play house, little kids cabin amongst other things. The gardens were beautiful too and the service quick and friendly. Would definitely recommend. Thank you!

Eating in Dumfries is a disaster unless you crave the truly mediocre. There are all the usual chains and the occasional independent pub but the bar is not high. However on the western edge, a stone's throw from the hospital (so it is easy to find is Kilnford Barns - restaurant and shop. Dearly beloved was in the hospital for 10 weeks so I went a lot. I also tried others in and around Dumfries and Kilnford and Also Loch Arthur are head and shoulders above the rest. The latter is a bit more artisinal about it. Smaller portions, more salad less mains and better cakes. But for a good no nonsense lunch at the price point of a good pub then Kilnford every time. It is easier to find - right by the hospital. Lots of parking. Good access for all. Daily specials from own produce. They bring the food to the table so it is warm. And you can pay for the coffee and they bring it to you when you are ready (Instead of queueing twice) Sensible standards at the grill. Be aware this is not a pub so the drink choice is limited.

I was expecting crisp home made onion rings..but sadly no they were soggy I'm sure bought in ones was hard to see the 1 strand of onion in it...won't be back for a meal....I always buy meat..chicken etc..the plan is to cook it myself...

My wife and I tried the farm shop and bought a selection of meats including two rib eye steaks and they weren’t particularly cheap we had them for tea tonight and I can honestly say it was the toughest, tasteless steak I have ever had. I just hope the rest of the stuff we had is better. We then went to the cafe which was quite busy at the time but it took 25 mins to bring a pot of tea to the table and when it arrived the cup was dirty.I took the cup to the counter and asked for another and the girl looke at 3 or 4 other cups before handing me one without a single word, or an apology. I don’t think I’ll be going again.

Took my parents out for a light lunch here. It's a lovely spot, restaurant, farm shop, nature trail all in one place. The restaurant is bright and airy with an open kitchen. A nice touch is the photographs and history of the place up on the walls. The menu is more extensive than I expected using a high percentage of local produce, much produced on their own farm. We had homemade soup which was delicious, a choice of leek and tatie or tomato and basil, followed by cake and coffee. The ginger cake was gorgeous. The staff were helpful and friendly. We followed lunch by a wander in the attached farm shop which again was full of local produce, particularly impressed with the meat counter which was meat off their own farm.

I gave this a 5 star review a few yrs ago. It really was very good and we've been many times, but last Friday it had changed. The previously excellent salad bar was covered up and the salad choice on the menu very limited. I could peep a little beneath the screen and see olives and things I would have liked, but these weren't on offer. How very odd.??? I had to ask which items weren't smothered in mayonnaise as the menu wasn't clear. The somewhat officious server wasn't clear either so my order took ages and ages.I ended up with an ENORMOUS plate of ham...very good ham...which lasted us for 3 dys and an ENORMOUS plate of beetroot and a bit of very boring lettuce and tomato. Previously I had figs, olives , Waldorf salad, Charcoal grilled vegetables. What has gone wrong?A reply to this would be very much appreciated from the management as it such a shame to lose such an oasis of lovely food in these parts.

Outside is lovely but the down side is it is next to a busy road and although screened visually there is alot of background noise. There are two types of food - food of the day served from the hotplate and then freshly prepared food. Not had anything from the hot plate - but what we ordered was very nicely prepared and fresh and tasty. Only down side ( for me) is that the chips are very much fries and I prefer my chips chunky. Bacon roll was fabulous, coffee is nice. Stop in the farm shop and by their own bacon while you are there - its brilliant.

The food served at Kilnford is beautiful, based on excellent ingredients. The restaurant looks lovely, too. Sadly it's all hard surfaces so there's nothing to absorb noise. If a chair scrapes across the floor at one end everybody hears it. The same goes for cutlery being put on plates. Sadly, the result is a cacophony. I'd love to go there often, but I'm afraid we stay away.

Having been a fan of Kilnford since the day it opened it pains me to say that it no longer maintains the standards it once did. My partner and I went here for lunch yesterday and I ordered the roast dinner, it looks magnificent on the serving counter, however what turned up on my plate bore little resemblance nor was it of a sufficient quantity to justify the £9.50 asking price. A single piece of dry beef the size of a beer mat, and a plate of vegetables. This does not represent value for money nor should it represent Dumfries & Galloway's fine tradition of being a food lovers paradise. Come on Kilnford, get your act together - until then we wont be back.

Went here at the weekend with the family for a look around, (not been for ages after a run in with a rude and arrogant butcher , who was offended when I asked him about allergen ingredients not being labelled on sausages ) We decided to have some coffee and scones in the tea room. My son has a dairy allergy so the only thing he could have was plain toast with jam, although I noticed they catered for gluten and wheat free customers. Was miffed to see on inspecting my receipt (after thinking that was a lot for what we had) that we were over charged for an extra scone. I am absolutely fed up of being overcharged, it happens around 50 per cent of the time when eating out. Check your receipts people!!! It was rectified after a quibble (the staff member pointed out I was charged for 2 juices and that was the issue and my mistake..which it was NOT so I had to read out and point to the error) and then my card was refunded. There is no excuse really, people need to do their jobs properly, their prices are inflated enough.

We have stopped off at Kilnford three times and find it quite pleasant. I must say I do find the food service procedure / menu placement a little unclear so perhaps there's room for improvement there. Our most recent visit was on our way home at the end of a long drive home from holidays. We have two very young toddlers, and were a bit dismayed when we realised the place was a bit rammed. We needn't have worried, we placed our order (I had a BLT from the grill and husband had one of the meals that are on the hot plates, and we ordered chips for the kids). We barely had time to get ourselves seated and the food arrived. Great when you have little ones with poor waiting skills. My first visit to the restaurant at Kilnford Barns although I have visited the retail shop previously. Our visit was in the evening and as I had heard good reports about the food I was looking forward to trying it out. We were greeted by a sign stating it was a burger night so everything was served in a bun - Not what I was expecting. It was quite busy so we sat down to check the offering.A good choice of about 6 or so burger options and it was easy to make a selection. Appetites were heightened through the aroma coming through the building from the kitchen. My Galloway Burger came with a pulled meat and onion mixture on top of the burger all wrapped op in a bun with fries, gravy and coleslaw rounding it off. Overall a really enjoyable taste and a good portion size. Cost around £10.The restaurant is spacious and well decorated and the natural wood furniture fits in well. It is a self service style where orders had to be made at the counter although staff did deliver the food to the table in a prompt and courteous manner. Full marks go to the coffee which was superb.Nothing overly exceptional - apart from the coffee- in this venue but it delivered an enjoyable experience that I will be happy to try again.

What a wonderful organic farm shop. The food choices are incredible: fruit & veg, meats and cheeses, pies, fresh flowers, jams & chutneys, candles, celebration cards and other craft fayre. Some samples are available to try.We bought fruit (giant oranges - so sweet and juicy, the best we have ever tasted), local bacon (which was delish and didn't leave the grill pan full of fat or water & cooked and crisped in it's own juice), organic wholemeal bread (which was really whole grain and incredibly good, although quite pricey). We also got birthday cards, ginger biscuits, jams and pickle, but they haven't been opened yet, as bought as gifts! We used the cafe for bacon butties and coffee with a cheese version for my vegetarian daughter! All were very tasty. We watched the birds on the feeders through our window and sheep in the pen, while we ate. It was like being back home! Yes the cafe is a bit noisy, but the staff service and food were very good. We will try the mail order service when we get home! Not sure if it will cover South Yorkshire, but it does say UK wide, so we will be checking it out.Well done Kilnford Barns.

Been coming to kilnford since it opened. I reckon 95% of our visits have been thoroughly enjoyable, GREAT food, great service, great staff etc. BUT it's that other 5% that let it down, seems like total chaos, very noisy and food not up to usual high standards. HOWEVER, I for one will NOT allow myself to be put off because the 95% is wonderful. My biggest praise goes to the butchery dept. Visited yesterday for lunch with a friend. Before going into restaurant we had a look round shop. Not sure why salad items such as lettuce were all from England, when this is supposed to be a local farm shop? I manage to grow lovely lettuce in my garden at home. Anyway, then onto restaurant. As others have said, we found it quite confusing. We read the menu at the door, and chose what we wanted. When we got to the counter, however, we were offered completely different items. After questioning the cheery girl at the counter, it appears that if you wish to order from the menu at door, you must collect a table number and be seated and your food will be brought. If you wish to eat "now" you can choose from the hot plate (none of which is listed on the menu). We found it quite confusing and clearly others did too. Anyway, the food was nice enough - we had butternut squash lasagne from the hot plate with a selection of overcooked veg, but we ate it all. There are jugs of water and a bucket of ice at a carousel in the middle of the room, but all the jugs were empty. We were seated quite close to the serving counter and found it extremely noisy - two members of staff were preparing teas / coffees and were banging the cups onto saucers so hard we were amazed they didn't break. We found it difficult to carry out much of a conversation over all the noise. More like a school canteen than what we expected but food was reasonable and good value at £7.50 each.

queues and confusion , very poor acoustics = very very noisy--no clean cutlery and a menu not detailing the correct produce!

The setting is lovely, just off the A75 but tucked away so quieter than you'd imagine. Lovely selection of food from local sources. Airy dining areas with lovely grounds and some outdoor tables. Fantastic play area for children ( and me!)

Our regular weekly pre shopping stop - great coffee (Mathew Algie) and friendly staff. Carrot cake ( although unfortunately unavailable on the last 4 visits!) very good too.

My family and I visit Kilnford regularly and have tried a wide range of dishes without finding a single fault. The menu is not particularly extensive or fancy but it makes the most of the wonderful produce available in the farm shop.I can fully recommended the breakfast rolls and burgers as well as some of the dishes that appear on the menu from time to time such as peri peri chicken and sausages. The home baking is also excellent.

Great burgers, tasty chips and macaroni was amazing. Good that children under 12 eat free with a paying adult - could see this was one reason there were as many families. Looking forward to trying out another themed night.

Been a fan of this place since they opened - it's nice, the food's great and staff always cheery. Dead handy for the A75 so do yourself a huge favour; leave the soggy egg & cress sandwiches at the petrol station and give this place a try instead.PS - the weekend breakfasts are top notch.

Dropped in for lunch last week and was much taken with the menu and specials board. With a fine array of hot and cold food on display . We settled for the lamb chops which were superb . The layout is perfect when you walk in you just know you are going to have a good meal . Well done to management and staff for a well run restaurant. Of course the other attraction here is the excellent shop and butchery with local meats

I visited Kilnford yesterday. In the shop I was very disappointed to see a very small selection of food from Dumfries and Gallloway. There are amazing small producers in our region. Why are you not supporting this industry? The cafe was okay. The staff were unable to cope with the volume of customers.

We travel the A75 regularly from the far west to Dumfries. We've done all the eateries and Kilnford is one of the most outstanding. Quite apart from the fact that it's also a good food shopping venue with excellent meat, deli. veg, and fresh fish (Thursday & Friday), the meal opportunities are endless, depending on your appetite. We've had some excellent breakfasts, mid-morning coffees and cakes, well-prepared lunches, afternoon teas, and if we're heading home lateish then a supper or grill from the a la carte menu has always pleased. It can be a busy place - so we try to avoid the usual rush periods, especially the lunchtime peak. The only major criticism we have is, like so many 'new build' establishments, not enough attention has been paid to noise abatement. There really should be some form of acoustic treatment to help soak up the noise and stress that comes with the general clatter that is associated with with stone floors and open ceiling areas.

We have visited the coffee shop since it opened and have always been very pleased, however we went on Easter Saturday as it opened and ending up walking out. The staff were setting up the chef was standing behind counter and a young girl was filling the drinks cabinet, we stood for 10ins and not one person spoke to us or made any effort, even to say have a seat we will be ready shortly. Very disappointed. Ended up in Barbours in Dumfries where the service is always good, had a full breakfast for more or less same cost as eggy bread at Kilnford, with table service too. Come one Kilnford, buck up.

A visit to the Kilnford site should never be missed. There is a wide selection of freshly cooked meals, also sandwiches as well as delicious salads. There is also a wide selection of fresh food available for purchase as well as newly caught fish. The whole site is step free and cars may be parked very close to the door. Toilets are clean and well maintained. Children are catered for too with an outdoor play area.

Menu on wall at entrance is in the wrong place, should be at, or duplicated at the serving area. Food was pleasant enough but service pretty disorganised. They seemed to be continually running out of cutlery & you had to wait for it being replenished even though it wasn't particularly busy. Attention to the details would make a world of difference.

Decided to try here again.I want to love it, I don't.Te menu just inside the door is in the wrong place, if you don't know it's there you don't see it and if you are looking at it, no one can get past. Then there's food on a hotplate, with no indication of what it is or prices.Too confusing, hence lots of confused peoe making the que long as they try to figure it all out.Anyway the steak burger and fries are really really lovely. However I'm sure would be better with a nice homebaked roll and a bit of salad and coleslaw. Just all seems apart from the burger not exactly homemade. There were no clean tables at 2.30 own a Sunday afternoon, despite it not being v busy. We wiped our own with a napkin. No knives etc , get the feeling the staff maybe don't all know quite what they are doing.Better than any of the local garden centre food places but I want it to be better and it could be , so easily, come on!

Was here last night for christmas carvery with my husband, son and daughter in law. The food was ok but there was absolutely no atmosphere in the place at all and only 2 or 3 other tables in. The staff just ignored us completely. Was disgusting. Lady carving the meat was miserable. So much for her happy christmas jumper. The whole place has the feel of a cheap cafe. Wont be back

We visited just before lunch, because like people say it does get busy. There's plenty of choice, from snacks, to main meals. overall the turnover of food is done so it is freshly cooked, but depend on your visit time, items have looked a bit tired so to speak, visited about 15 times now, and only had that problem twice. The meat mains are excellent value, as are the chicken line. Great selection of teas, coffee's drinks etc. breakfast are great value also. Its on the up and up, and the shopping inside the complex is excellent

We have been going here since it opened and have never been disappointed. Friendly staff too. It's very popular now and thus it's not always easy to get a seat at peak times. In the summer there is a nice outside area and a place for the children to run around. Food is good. If I had one negative comment and it's personal, it can be very noisy, mostly due to the hard surfaces reflecting the noise, so it can be difficult to have a conversation. Shops also supply local fresh food and gifts. Every time we take friends they enjoy the experience. We mostly have coffee and cakes, so well recommended for this.

We went here shortly after they opened and were disappointed. The main courses were OK, but nothing special, and the cakes were standard industrial ones. We went back, tentatively, and found the place excellent. The main courses were excellent and everything now seems to be home made. A small but nice outdoors play area for children has appeared, too.Warmly recommended.

Stopped for a break on the way south. Purchased beef stroganoff, rice, roasted veg. The temperature of the beef was significantly under 68°C to the point I asked for it to be reheated, I saw no evidence of anyone then measuring the temp of the rest of the bowl or removing it from the counter. Taste wise is was pleasant once it had been reheated, but the veg that had been an acceptable temperature were heated as well and detracted from their flavour. The coffee was fine but the although the fruit slice pastry was well made the fruit filling was dry and made the whole thing too dry. The bathrooms were clean and modern and the staff were friendly and helpful if lacking in food hygiene knowledge.

My wife and I called in this afternoon for a late lunch. The menu board disappeared as we arrived and when we enquiries about what was available we were told "the grill" was still working. We ordered the burger, a coffee and a can of pop. Sadly for farm shop type restaurant the burgers arrived overdone with artificial chips. The coffee was good. Total cost was more than £18.Disappointing meal - we expected better.

This is a lovely wee restaurant just outside Dumfries on the A75 Castle Douglas Road. The food is excellent, the best cauliflower cheese I've tasted! Very family friendly with outdoor play area and amazing playhouse for kids. Farm shop/Deli is well stocked with variety of fresh produce. Definetley well worth a visit.

Been several times and never been disappointed. If you are an egg and chips and all day breakfast person don't go there. This is about real food. Excellent array of salads. All very reasonably priced. The asparagus quiche was brilliant. The hot food looked good too. I was spoilt for choice. It has to be the only place in Dumfries that serves a good selection of veg and salads. Very brave of them in this part of the world where greens seem to be considered the work of the devil! The main cafe and counter area is very noisy, and can appear confusing 'til you know the system, but you can take your tray into the 'stable' area to eat which is much quieter.

Just in from dinner at Kilnford. The Thursday theme was fajitas. The step by step instructions for selecting your dinner were fun; the food was fresh and incredible value. We have eaten here before and are never disappointed but tonight was super - everyone's tray was loaded with fresh sides and three kinds of fajitas although have to say the chilli was the best.Deserves to be higher in the Dumfries ranking for food.Staff very friendly and helpful - thank you!

We have been to Kilnford quite a few times for coffee/lunch and the surroundings are good, quality is too, although service can be slow but we always enjoy it.We had dinner here last night and were disappointed with their pricing. Steak night is advertised from £7.95, but the only steak at that price is gammon. They have a pave steak at £9.95, a sirloin at £11.95 and a fillet at £13.95, so effectively a sirloin, with 3 small (cold) onion rings, 3 mushrooms, half a tomato and some chips, plus a coffee is just under £15. A far cry from £7.95.I know that a sirloin elsewhere can be much more than this , but this is only a 6 ounce, served in a coffee shop with kids running about, I think Kilnford need to get the prices below where they are for the current environment, and be a bit clearer about what is on offer.

A very handy stop-over if travelling to or from Stranraer with a pleasant welcome from staff. Unfortunately lunch was a little disappointing for the price paid. I'm afraid the carrots were gritty and the potatoes a bit tasteless.

Having read a few quibbles and the very occasional genuine complaint about the quality of food available at Kilnford, I wish to add my assertion that this is one of the finest establishments in the area and I am genuinely disappointed that it is not also available in the evenings.Yes it can be a little busy - testimony to the quality of fare on offer and the pleasure this restaurant can bring. If you seek a more sedate environment, there is a plentiful supply of garden centre tea rooms in the area where you can sip your cup of tea and dunk your Rich Tea biscuit 'til your hearts content.Friendly and helpful staff, a feeling that you could linger all day, and great food make this the number one choice for many day-time diners. Yes, I also have a quibble or two - this is something possible in every establishment if you really want to put the effort in, but at a time when I read of so many other reviewers complaining of a lack of atmosphere in other restaurants, I doff my cap to the owners at Kilnford.

Went to Kilnford for lunch today, we visit often but this is about the 5th time for lunch. The food was delicious, I had Mac cheese which was on the specials board an my partner had one of their steak burgers with cheese which looked and tasted first class. Being quite fussy when it comes to macaroni I was really pleased that I ordered it and to be truthful it's the best I've tasted in Dumfries. All staff were polite, efficient and well presented, nothing was too much trouble. The restaurant was extremely busy (understandably) so it was a little noisy, I preferred that though. If however u want some peace and quiet there is a separate quite area. The food was definitely value for money and we will definitely be returning customers.

This restaurant is part of Smiths hotel at Gretna Green. We were in the final days of our holiday in Scotland and wanted to have a special meal. We were staying at the hotel and saw this had good reviews. Well it didn’t disappoint. It was good that you could pick and mix from the a la carte menu and the bar menu. Every course was very good. Because we had courses from both menus I didn’t think it was too expensive. The service was good although it was very busy with other events going on. The staff were kept busy but were still attentive to our needs. Would recommend if you want something special or just for an evening meal.

A super bed and breakfast with a lovely vegan curry and home baked ecclefechan tart in the bar which had an open fire. Steve and Mary looked after us like a mum and a big brother. Could not do enough for us including a very welcome lift to and from hoddom Bridge as we were walking the annandale way. And a packed lunch to order. Will recommend to all, especially walkers.

We ate here and finished our meal, the waitress cleared away and we decided we'd have another round of drinks before leaving. We waited 5, 10 minutes and the waitress never came back. I went in search of someone but couldn't find our waitress. I didn't like to open the doors to the kitchen. We waited another 5 minutes and my wife said 'this is ridiculous' and went off in pursuit. She found our waitress in the bar (was she watching TV, did she fancy the barman?) and asked if we could get some service. The waitress said 'the restaurant is closed', as if we were being unreasonable in expecting to be served a round of drinks. No, the restaurant isn't closed if you've still got people sitting at a table you're serving and you haven't asked them if they want a dessert or offered them the bill but simply buggered off. So we said OK, can we just pay the bill. Which we did, and obviously didn't leave tip. We won't be going back.
