We came over for dinner as the hotel was recommended to us by a friend. We started in the conservatory where we were served drinks and some complimentary canapés. After a chat with the owner (i think he likes chatting to his guests) we sat at the table. They do have a set menu which, to be honest, looks really good so i went for it. Before the starter we were brought a complimentary peas and tarragon veloute which was really nice. For starter i ordered the liver pate on fruity bread, which, admittedly, was one of the best I've ever had. The fruity bread and the pate go really well together. As a main i ordered (sorry i forgot the exact name of the dish) meat with steamed vegetables, roasted potatoes and mushrooms sauce, which sounds really simple and plain but it was cooked just perfectly and was delicious indeed. To finish it all off i ordered the chocolate cake with coulis and cream which was really nice. So, to summarize: extremely good dinner in a really nice restaurant, yes expensive but totally worth the price, the chef clearly knows her stuff, so credit to her. Should i be in the area again, i will most definitely try it again. The hosts were also lovely people always up for a chat - when they're not busy of course. The restaurant itself i think was really nice and the conservatory where we had drink even nicer. We booked a table and although the restaurant was effectively empty i suggest you book rather than turning up there unannounced.

Highland Cottage is inviting and friendly. The menu has options for every taste, and when it's served, it looks as good as it tastes! I'm still dreaming of the apple and red onion relish that was served with the scallops. Service was attentive, we didn't feel rushed at all, and dinner was a real pleasure. I appreciate that local food is highlighted and served with thought and care. Thank you for helping us celebrate my husband's birthday!

David runs a wonderful little restaurant - we did not see the hotel part but would be keen to give it a try on our next trip. It started badly (for us) because we were delayed because of bad weather) so had to call in that we were going to be late. "no problem, get here when you get here". When we finally got there and apologized David within 5 minutes had made us totally relaxed, sat down in a litle cozy sitting room to study the menu, and handed us a glass of bubbly. Really lovely. Service and food was impeccable. I particularly remember my seared but still glassy scallops with bacon - just great. Slightly old fashioned, slightly traditonal cooking, all perfectly done. Not for the lovers of them newfangled things, but just wonderful food served in an atmosphere which is stylish, comfortable and elegant. Somewhat between small restaurant and private dining rooom The wine list is equally tasteful. David brings a lifetime experience in the restaurant business and it really shows. All four of us walked out very happy - and not just happy customers.h

What a lovely restaurant. Whilst it is small it is really good. The food was really tasty, and the best steak I have had in a long time - I asked for medium rare and that is exactly what I had. The pate was smooth and light, steak cooked to perfection and the deserts were also light and delicious. Very comfortable and friendly. I understand it is run by a husband and wife team who do an excellent job and we really do thank them both for a wonderful evening

You will feel like you have stepped back in time to a totally charming and homey small country hotel even though it was built in the early 1990's. Not sure how much longer Dave and Jo will be taking reservations for dinner from non-guests, but if I had one night in Tobermory this is where I'd go. If you reserve for 8:00 they will advise you to come at 7:30 for an aperitif and delicious nibbles in their comfy light filled lounge next to the dining room. You peruse the menu and choose your wine so Dave can open it up to breathe. He also takes the time to chat with you in the lounge and at several points in the meal as he limits the number of reservations to a handful each evening. 3 course dinner for 39.50 English pounds was outstanding. His wife Jo does all the cooking including the dinner rolls. A Jerusalem artichoke velouté small starter was excellent. Crab cakes first course crunchy and delicious. A roasted saddle of venison with juniper berry seasoned gravy was fork tender and perfectly cooked. Chocolate and orange truffle tort was super creamy and rusty nail frozen parfait was sensational. Make sure you bring an appetite as portions are substantial - must confess had to pace myself and couldn't lick the plate clean as much as I would have liked to. Coffee and after dinner drinks may be taken in the lounge if you wish. Lots of parking. We were utterly beguiled.

My wife and I thought this one of the best dinners we'd ever had in Scotland, prepared by Jo, clearly a most accomplished cook. Before the meal, we enjoyed drinks and finger-food in the very comfortable conservatory. At table, Jo's husband shirt-sleeved Dave, acted as waiter and conversed amusingly with us on several topics, as well as briefing us fully on what was on the menu. Our only gripe was that ever-genial Dave had an off-putting underarm problem.

Just returned from a long weekend and on the recommendation of our landlady at Tobermory we visited the Highland Cottage for a 7 year anniversary meal. There is a very calm atmosphere within this restraurant, the setting is a cosy lounge which is accessed from the conservatory where you wait for your table on warm and comfortable settees and chairs with views over the rear garden. David, the co owner of the restaurant with his wife Jo, carries out all the hosting, meal ordering and small talk and he excels. He is plainly a very calm bloke with a marvellous attention to detail and customer wishes. The lounge restaurant is very Scottish/oldy worldly and very warm.We started of with free snacks in the conservatory . ON being cllled into the lounge by David we were soon served with delicious starters and main meals, which consisted of Scottish Beef ,for the girlfriend, and venison for myself. This was the softest most delicious venison I have ever tasted and the beef was succulent and tasty. Ancillary vegetables were also on the same scale ..We finished with orange/chocolate tarte and the girlfriend had lemon posset. Never tasted anything like these deserts and we have eaten all over the world. If you are ever in Mull this is the place to eat, you will not be disappointed.ALLAN AND KAREN

Not a large venue and a million miles away from some atmosphere free dining experiences. The mussels in lemon mayonnaise was one of the best starters I have had for a long time. Something on the menu for everyone and I suspect if asked, would accommodate anything within reason.Bottom line is that this is someone's home. Four people - we all had different items - and everything was cooked to perfection. The linen was lovely, the service was attentive. We might have gone back had the decor of the walls and furniture been a bit less old-fashioned and the casual comments of the hosts not been quite so impertinent - we did not take offence because it was clear they thought they were being funny so we put it down to the hosts' sassenach attitudes. Every bit of praise for the food is well deserved.

We returned to the Highland Cottage yet again - we've been going there for years - for what's become our traditional highlight meal of our week on Mull. The four of us were warmly welcomed by Dave and immediately felt at ease in the comfortable conservatory with our drinks and canapés. I had mentioned to Jo a couple of days beforehand, when we booked the meal, that my wife doesn't eat shellfish (I still have no idea why, but it's best not to argue). They assured us that this wouldn't be a problem, and the menu that evening turned out to contain something lovely for everybody. Jo did us proud with her tip-top cooking, and Dave's wine suggestion was voted so good we just had to have a second bottle. The evening was hugely enjoyable, relaxing, and both Jo and Dave made time at the end to have a chat. It was one of the best meals we've had in a restaurant of its type and for as long as we go to Mull on holiday we'll continue going to the Highland Cottage - it's exactly what we want,

Second visit here and again we left feeling very happy, contented having both enjoyed a leisurely wonderful meal. The venue is somewhat eclectic with lots of curios and oddities with lots of comfy chairs and books and a nice conservatory to sit in. The food is locally sourced and expertly prepared, compares with many city centre top venues. At first sight the restaurant appears to be a homely affair on a converted cottage however its evident that there is a good deal more professional work that goes on here that isn't apparent.Mine host Dave is very knowledgeable and remembered me from 2 years earlier which is either a good sign or maybe not !It is pricy (£110 for 2) based on a set 3 course menu of £39.50 but you won't regret it,

The portion sizes are hearty, (unlike some AA restaurants) so don't have any nibbles before you go. By the time you have the canapes in the lounge, followed by 2 or 3 courses, you need a walk before bed! Having read all the good reviews we really expected something special. The food was certainly very tasty and well presented. My only slight reservations were with the scallops, which had the coral left on, not to my taste, but this is a personal preference. Price was for three courses and coffee, and this couldn't be deviated from. I think a choice of prices for two or three courses would have been helpful; it turned into an eating marathon which I couldn't finish. The main grouse was with the seating; it would appear that you move an armchair in the room you take your drinks in at your peril. It is impossible to accomodate larger parties who want to sit together, so perhaps best for couples.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Before discovering TripAdvisor, I had eaten in a number of restaurants during my trips to the Isle of Mull over the past 4 years. Unfortunately the Highland Cottage has not been amongst them. I must thank those TripAdvisor members who left recommendations for this establishment which brought it to my attention. The Highland Cottage appears to be the only one on the island serving Haute Cuisine; those who enjoy fine dining will relish a visit to the Highland Cottage. The dining experience commences with canapés and cocktails in the conservatory – hopefully this allows each guest enough time to resolve the difficult dilemma as to what to choose from the sumptuous menu options.Every course is punctuated with a pre-starter, pre-main course and pre-dessert ‘tasters’.I have no serious issue with any of the dishes presented to me during the evening – all were excellent – Jo is clearly an accomplished and practised chef. The only disappointment I had was with the house white wine which did not seem to agree with the meal.If the reader requires a critique then I can only do so by way of comparison to other excellent restaurants which I have frequented – which may be meaningless unless the reader has visited them. The standard of cooking to be found at the Highland Cottage on the Isle of Mull is comparable to that found at The Three Chimneys on the Isle of Skye.Although it costs slightly more to dine at the Three Chimneys, I would have to say that the Three Chimneys wins out on 2 'fronts' as follows:(1) Superior presentation (although it has to be said that the presentation at the Three Chimneys approaches an art-form). However, it should be noted that when Jo’s creation hits one’s palate, all is forgotten.(2) Cuisine is more 'balanced'; Jo has a tendency to make food slightly on the overly-rich side - this trait is particularly evident in her desserts ... sometimes less is more.I noticed 2 male customers who were staying at the Hotel pass when offered dessert, however their wives were clearly determined not to forgo the experience and took time to devour their selection while their respective partners looked on pensively!I am perplexed that the Highland Cottage restaurant has only been awarded 2 Rosettes by The AA for 2008/2009, as there is far more (successful) judgement of flavour combinations, culinary expertise and considerably better presentation of the food in evidence at Highland Cottage than I experienced at the Ullinish Country Lodge on Skye - awarded 3 Rosettes by The AA.There is also a greater selection of dishes offered; the menu choice at the Ullinish was much more restricted, having half the number of choices available at the Highland Cottage. If I was given the choice between the Ullinish and the Highland Cottage then I would choose the Highland Cottage every time. All in all, considering the excellent standard of cuisine that I experienced, the Highland Cottage offers value for money at this culinary level.I will definitely seek another reservation at the Highland Cottage when I visit Mull again next year.Unfortunately gastronomic enjoyment may be curtailed ... on my way out David talked of his and Jo's retirement, so interested readers should not tarry making their reservations …

We were recommended to eat at the Highland Cottage restaurant as part of our honeymoon stay at the Park Lodge Hotel. What a surprise, we have both travelled extensively throughout the world and have eaten in some top class establishments and nothing could prepare us for Jo's culinary expertise. We were greated by David and his team and were immediately made to feel at home. We were shown though to the conservatory and brought olives while we ordered drinks. The menu made for some hard decisions, both my wife and I felt we were spoilt for choice..... Overall, the evening was fantastic, David is a great host, friendly, witty, and very easy to get along with. All dishes served were of an exceptional quality and my steak was the best I have ever tasted!!!

This Dining experience is not to be missed. David and Jo are excellent hosts and present great food based upon local produce. Its good value with a fixed price menu, its small size makes it cosy and intimate. The whole evening we spent there was most enjoyable, if you are in Mull it is a treat not to be missed, if you are not in Mull then you are missing out – go there….

Had a very good late breakfast. Highlight though was the very efficient, cheery, friendly young lady serving. Totally brightened up my day.

Marvelous honesty tea tent set up by local school students in a fantastic setting. This was the most unexpected treat on our cycle tour along Jura's coast

We ate here two nights in a row in early August. The menu changed each night so there were new things to try. We gelt some of the food, such as the starters, were over priced for the portion (£8.50 for two small croquettes) but they were delicious. However, the slices of cake we got for pudding were easily big enough for two (the picture shows two half slices on one plate) and each only £6.50. The cakes and puddings we had were all top notch A*** (esp choc ganache) so worth coming in just for coffee and cake even if you don't have a meal. We booked in advance via WhatsApp for 6pm dinner: Wed night it was quiet but the Thursday was heaving so glad we booked. The food we had was c. £20 for a main course and was really well made and delicious. Portions aren't huge but were sufficient. There isn't a kids menu so the first night we shared two meals between the three of us and had pudding, but the second night we had a main each. The Island Cafe is cheaper than the Coll Hotel and has a nice home made, welcoming feel to it with local art and two linked rooms, one with sofas and tables and the other just tables. The serving staff were nice young people. My partner also had coffee and cake here and the cakes really are very good (I hear the Chelsea buns are to die for too) and my coffee-snob partner says this is the best coffee available on Coll.
