Am Birlinn in Argyll & Bute

Visited for lunch having visited Calgary Bay. Lovely half lobster and cheese board. Well worth planning into your trip around Weat Mull.

Situated in stunning surroundings. The journey up to Am Birlinn is beautiful. Absolutely worth making the effort to get there. The food was delicious. The serving staff were very friendly and made every effort to make the experience special. The menu is varied to suit different tastes. Well presented and portion sizes were perfect.

Am Birlinn is a lovely airy wooden space with some gorgeous artwork on the walls: driftwood sculptures and weavings. We were lucky enough to be able to eat here twice during our holiday. Staff were lovely to us with our two kids. The food was absolutely delicious, both times, and the food was local, incredibly fresh, not fussy or faddy but really original, deceptively simple flavours that worked beautifully together. The scallops, the pan-fried sea bream, the coffee panna cotta with the roasted plums and the cranachan cheesecake were especially memorably amazing.

One of the best restaurants on Isle of mole cheaper than Tobermory and service and quality of the food is exceptional. The owners take pride in this restaurant and work front of housing & as the chef in the kitchen. Exceptionally fresh produce everything grown locally or locally. This could quite easily be Michelin star restaurant. If you’re coming for a few days, and enjoy fine dining with an extensive menu do not miss this Restaurant.

Came here twice during a trip to Mull, food is delicious, super fresh seafood and great value compared to London! Oysters were amazing and had the lobster too, simply prepared and just perfect. Wines are a bit dull, service is offhand but I guess they just see a lot of tourists.

It’s a perfect place for dinner. Very kind people, warm atmosphere (wooden house in the forest), fantastic food! We loved it. Highly recommendable!

Sadly I can't agree with other glowing reviews here. Food was at best average and my main course of belly pork seemed to have been served with bisto gravy. Edible but a huge disappointment.

Another excellent visit to Am Birlinn. My husband always says the Cullin Skink is the best he has had. We had the tagine and Thai curry today and both were perfect. Fantastic, friendly service as always in one of our favourite restaurants. Always one of the highlights of our holiday.

Best seafood meal I have had in a long time. Fish cooked to perfection with yummy asparagus and smashed potatoes.

Nice little restaurant, impeccable service

We had generous delicious portions of mushroom soup, steamed mussels, langoustines, cod. Dessert was amazing-apple blueberries crumble with home made ice cream, cheese cake & homemade ice cream (mango passion fruit flavour). Lovely lady served us and overall great dining experience. Clean and nice ambiance. Highly recommended if you’re in Mull.

Very friendly restaurant with tasty and hearty cuisine. Friendly and warm service and atypical place. A very pleasant dinner in a place to absolutely discover. Go there with your eyes closed, you will not be disappointed. Resa imperative!

Some of the best food we have had anywhere- not just on Mull. Great local produce cooked with flair and expertise, great presentation- some dishes looked beautiful on the plate. Local daily specials as well as a great selection of staple menu items, including vegetarian, seafood and meat. We ate and would highly recommend the roast pork, venison casserole, seafood stew, scallops and espresso panda cotta. Also an impressive purpose built timber building with high ceilings, good decor and comfortable seats / tables. Good service.

Another brilliant Mull meal. Every dish was outstanding, local produce cooked with skill and care. The attention to detail on each dish was wonderful. The plums with the espresso panna cotta were wonderful.

Beautiful restaurant and food was terrific. Greeter said restaurant could not split the check but once we went to close out, the server said it could be done. Not sure of the disconnect. Overall good experience but a bit of awkwardness when it came to the check. Give it a shot, food is worthwhile.

Lovely place for an meal, booked a few weeks before as we had heard bookings were advisable. The food was gorgeous we had starters, mains and desserts. All were well cooked and delicious, good size portions and well cooked. The staff were lovely and will definitely return when we return next year. Love their restaurant signs wish you could buy them, the design is beautiful . . .

My husband and I enjoyed a delicious meal here last Friday evening. A warm welcome and a varied/delicious menu. We had langoustines, soup, hake and guinea fowl. Every plateful was so tasty and cooked to perfection. Service was unobtrusive and polite. Thank you for a delightful evening. Highly recommend.

Had a wonderful lunch today with my husband at Am Birlinn. We enjoyed fresh muscles, Cullen skink, and lovely fresh bream. Really tasty well presented. Friendly owner and good service. Would highly recommend.

Always sure of a great meal at Am Birlinn. Everything was first class, staff, great food and service. A must if you visit Mull.

Die Meeresfrüchte als Vorspeisen oder Hauptspeisen waren jeweils köstlich. Auch das Ambiente stimmt. Ein Dank an das ganze Team. Es hat mehr als nur ein Lob verdient.

We were playing and it looked busy so we had a look and saw that it had a 4.8 rating so I'm we went. We both had the tomato, basel & roasted red pepper soup. 10 out of 10 My wife had the confit of duck and I had the venison hot pot. Again both 10 out of 10 and for the quality of food reasonably priced.

First class food in lovely surroundings with friendly staff. We ate there 3 times in the week we were nearby and had excellent food every time. Lovely cullen skink starter.

Beautiful restaurant, great service, wonderful food. And we were able to park the motorhome in their carpark overnight so we could have a drink.

We sat outside with the dog. It was a warm evening and staff were very attentive considering we were outside. Lovely food. The haggis spring roll starter and sticky toffee pudding was very tasty.

First tasted the chefs food 9 years ago at a previous restaurant. I can say never forgot that meal. Now he and he's wife have taken over the Am Birlinn some years ago, you would be foolish not to go and eat here. Food fantastic, all local products used on menu. This is an absolutely brilliant restaurant, without fault. Great menu, great service and quality food. Atmosphere is welcoming and warm. Do not miss if you’re on Mull.

Seemed very quiet but we were booked in at 5pm because they couldnt do 6pm which was 30% full??? Really didn't understand this.

Best food we have eaten in a long time, I loved the scallops and the ribeye. My boyfriend loved his soup and pork shoulder. We would recommend everyone to stop here for amazing food and great service.

How wonderfully unexpected to find this restaurant out in the wilds of Mull! We had a marvelous lunch: incredibly high-quality, local ingredients prepared to an exceptional standard. The haggis in the haggis spring rolls was the best I've ever tasted.

Great spot with an excellent selection of local seafood dishes on the menu. Seafood stew in particular was very tasty. Kids enjoyed it too and the atmosphere was good. Recommended.

Had haddock and chips, not as good as many fish and chip shops. Other meals looked better. Nice atmosphere and staff.

I’m not sure what I liked more- the Spaetzle or our waiter Finn. The food tied as the best I have had on our three week trip to the islands of Scotland. The feta cheese was creamy and delicious with homemade spaetzle and beautifully sautéed vegetables. Everything was divine. Our waiter Finn was superb- very attentive and friendly. We weren’t allowed to give him a tip as the restaurant pools their tips, but we wanted him to know what a great waiter he is!

Excellent cuisine from a chef who knows his trade, attentive staff and a well-considered selection of wines made the evening a special event. The mussels from the catch of the day were our favorites today.

I had lunch on a recommendation and really enjoyed it. The first 2 pages of the menu listed the relationships they have with local farms, fishermen, etc... that was a food sign. I had cullen skink followed by langosteens, and both were amazing. The prices were reasonable for the quality, and it was quite a nice experience.

Wonderful Scottish seafood with a French twist. Some of the best scallops I have ever had! Particularly like that most/all of the fish, meat and veg come from a 15 mile radius of the restaurant. Would definitely recommend for a special meal.

Attended this restaurant as a result of comments left in the guest book where we were staying. A lovely looking wooden building with large windows, inside spacious, well laid out, very clean, and nicely decorated. Staff very efficient, friendly and polite, the restaurant is proud to use locally sourced food, and it's delicious, there is nothing on that menu I wouldn't eat, and very well priced considering its situated in a remote location. If your on the island make time to have a meal here, it worth it, great experience.

Just came home from a lovely meal in am birlinn. They very kindly squeezed us in, despite it being a busy Saturday night. All of our food was absolutely delicious (we had steak, spaetzle, cheesecake and lime posset). The staff were all polite and friendly, especially the lady with red hair and a septum piercing who was really lovely and provided excellent service. Would definitely return and recommend.

Probably the best restaurant on the Isle of Mull. Exceptional dining and great flavours. Well done.

We visited here whilst on a day trip to Mull the food and service was very good The Cullen skink was delicious and so where the haggis rolls We had mains of confit duck and slow cooked beef both where really tasty highly recommend when visiting Mull best to book in advance as gets very busy

Excellent restaurant. We had lobsters that were caught that afternoon and cooked to perfection. The location is beautiful and the restaurant itself is very stylish. Prices were reasonable for the quality of the food. Eat your heart out Rick Stein. Book in advance and let them know if you will be wanting lobster. You won’t be disappointed

Attended this restaurant only as a result of its reviews and they are not wrong - seriously yummy. Front of house was professional, polite and efficient. Acoustics were good too - no issues with trying to talk across a table or with others being too close. Chairs comfy and tables clean. Starters: Tomato & roasted pepper soup - nicely thick and packed with flavour. Haggis spring roll & beetroot/apple slaw - not heavy, but light and delicious. Main course: Battered haddock, salad & fries - the batter was incredible thin/light. Hake fillet on cannellini beans, Chorizo & spinach - another well balanced dish. Desert: Sticky toffee pudding & sauce with vanilla ice cream (dish of the meal) - the sauce was plentiful & scrummy, sponge incredible light and ice cream perfect. Key lime posset & shortbread biscuit. Drinks: 1 victorian lemonade & 2 bottles of stout. Service charge was not added and not asked for which was nice to see but we did leave a 10% tip which was easily deserved. Bill was £74.05 Overall this was an amazing, faultless and flavoursome meal. Highly recommended

These lovely people helped me back to Tobermory after my bike broke down. I'll be back next year to thank them in person and, no doubt, have great food.

Delicious, fresh and perfectly prepared seafood dishes. Friendly service and very reasonable prices for the quality of our meal. If you visit Mull this is a must! Langoustine, mussels, Hake and Seabass dishes all highly recommended. Lovely to see most ingredients are sourced locally.

Absolutely lovely restaurant. We loved lunch here. I'd recommend you call ahead and carefully look at the opening times, but the food was excellent and the service was beyond welcoming. To say we were lucky to find this place would be an understatement.

Delicious meal from a varied menu and added specials of the day Dessert Cranachan Cheesecake was delicious and first class. Efficiently cooked and served by friendly staff The only minus was a child screaming so ear splittingly loud in a high roofed restaurant caused considerable pain to people wearing hearing aids! I had to remove mine and couldn't lip read because the staff still adhering to Covid protection masks!!
