My husband and I dined at Restaurant 22 last night, to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. What a special place! We had the full tasting menu and I had the fine wines that accompanied each course. It is hard to put into words how incredible the flavours were and how well the wines complemented - just wonderful! The service was impeccable and the staff very knowledgeable. Would highly recommend and look forward to returning.

I don't often leave reviews but seeing that this was the only restaurant that has ever made me cry of joy while eating, I think it deserves an exception. I came for a late birthday celebration and I have had one of, if not the best experiences in a restaurant up to date. I've been to many fine dining restaurants and not many managed to hit the spot like Restaurant 22 did: in terms of food, in terms of ambiance, in terms of service, God, even the wine flight knocked me out of this world! I highly recommend fighting through the waiting list because reservations are hard to acquire, but extremely worth it! Pro tip: keep an eye for last minute availabilities on their Instagram page!

We were a mixed group ie vegetarian and non-vegetarian so were a bit nervous about how they would keep us all happy given they only offer a set menu. We need not have worried, the meal was superb with amazing flavours and textures. We all had different favourite courses mine being a 'simple' gougere. Delightful staff - attentive but not too attentive! Only slight quibble was the coffee which my husband likened to dishwater.

What can I say that's not already been said? Use any superlative you can think of and then some. Tucked away in a rather "blink and you'll miss it" victorian townhouse is this superb restaurant. Lorry driver & cleaner made to feel like millionaire lottery winners. Been lucky enough to have dined at a couple of Michelin star restaurants but always felt the urge to "let's have a burger" afterwards. Not here though, oh, no. Left fully appetite satisfied. Best Sauvingnon blanc we've had and by restaurant prices, a good price. (Had two, and we're from Yorkshire!) It was wife's birthday and also our wedding anniversary and she was skeptical about paying so much for a meal. Changed her mind afterwards. Money we'll spent.

Having had this on our wish list for a while we decided to treat dine here as our Christmas gift to ourselves, and we were not disappointed. Lovely setting and attentive staff. The food was amazing, tasty and beautifully presented with clear explanations as each was served. It would be difficult to pick a favourite dish all were so good, with the most delicious combinations of flavour and texture. On a personal note the only thing we didn't enjoy was the yeast butter ( one of three, so plenty of the others to enjoy with the most delicious bread we have ever had). The only very minor suggestion for improving the score from 99 to 100 would be staggering the serving of dishes in the upstairs area a bit more, it is small ( which is lovely) but when most of the tables were served a dish within a few seconds of each other it was quite difficult to focus in in our server and hear them properly ) not their fault, they were speaking clearly and loudly enough, just the combination of so many talking at the same time). For a special treat we'd definitely recommend dining here.

We have been going to R22 for a few years now & have loved it. The food is great. We’re always surprised by something & the wine pairings are spot on. We always opt for the full tasting menu and flight of wines to get the most out of the experience. The place is cute & cosy, which is one of the reasons we’ve repeated our visits. Our last trip was not so great though & we won’t be going back. It all started so well. Incredible food & wine as always. Cannot complain about that. Half way through the meal my husband commented that he thought we were being rushed a little. We had finished the whole thing at the same time as those around us who were having the shorter menu. Certainly not how it should be or how we’ve ever experienced before. Then we were offered a drink to finish, which we ordered. As the drinks were brought over to us, we were told we had 5 minutes to finish them and leave as our time was up! Sadly this left a really bad taste in the mouth & combined with the rushed meal, spoilt the experience. It was such a shame. If they’d messed up & not allowed sufficient time for us to have the full menu they should’ve just said rather than rushed it. Too much money to spend for it to be ruined like that. We'll be heading back to Midsumer House for these meals from now on. More expensive but the service is on another level.

Previous reviews make a very compelling case as to why this is simply a fabulous restaurant. But you need to try it for yourself. It is very special and the quality of the food is out of this world. The friendly service complements the whole experience and the staff are all incredibly knowledgeable. Although a tasting menu, with multiple courses, they arrive at a leisurely pace and you never feel full. We had the classic wine flight and this was extremely carefully chosen with flavours that paired superbly. We will definitely return and although not cheap, this place was worth every last penny. El sorbete era un toque agradable, pero la estrella fue el postre de chocolate que se presentaba muy bien también! Muy buena selección de vinos y los camareros son muy eficiente y amable. MORE AT TripAdvisor

Finally decided to go to Restaurant 22 for our wedding anniversary dinner. It's one of the few non-starred local restaurants to be listed in the Michelin Guide and it's a small independent, so we had high hopes. From the start, we felt we'd got off on the wrong foot. We walked in and there were other diners, but no-one to welcome us or show us to the table. After an uncomfortable minute of hanging about, the owner/maítre d' appeared. Once we'd established our booking, he offered us a choice of tables. We opted for a corner one, which seemed to require a fair bit of shuffling around to get us settled in. He pretty much barked directions at us while we did this "move the chair back", "stay there" etc, which was kind of odd, and a hint of what was to come. Finally settled in, we were asked whether we wanted anything to drink before we looked at the menus. We weren't given a drinks list or anything - it seems like we were just expected to name a drink out of thin air. Again, we were a bit thrown by this, so just asked for the wine list.We were then given the food menus (which we hadn't said we wanted yet) and my husband was presented with the wine list. Not only was the man expected to order, but obviously if we wanted wine, we must only want it with our food, and not just because we like to drink it. How very traditional. When we ordered food, my husband named his main course. The waiter repeated it back incorrectly, but we didn't think too much of it. A few minutes later, he reappeared and in very accusing tones (interrupting our conversation), said "You said cod" to my husband, who was a bit stunned, but managed to say "No, I said pollock, YOU said cod". But what a stupidly rude way to go about talking to a customer. An amuse-bouche of a shot glass of warm pumpkin velouté was surprisingly good (neither of us likes pumpkin usually) and the Guinness bread was divine, like a soft spongy malt loaf without the raisins. Soda bread was a bit too chewy, though and the small table was getting a bit overloaded with the bread tray, a wine cooler & water jug at this point.Starters were impressive, especially the beetroot soup which arrived as a bowl with a delicate pattern of things at the bottom of it (including a delicate wholegrain mustard sauce). I scarcely had time to take in what it was before a jug of the soup was whirled over it all. Now if you're going to attempt food as theatre, it must be done with explanations and a flourish, not a slosh. It felt like a bit of a missed opportunity to impress, to be honest. A passion fruit sorbet was tangy with the fruit flavour and made a good palate cleanser.Main courses were also good if not over-generous on portion sizes. The pollock was well cooked. Glazed carrots were disappointing - swamped in far too much honey. Squash & ricotta cake was a soft moist almost soufflé-textured creation which displayed some skill with flavours and technique, so clearly there is some good cooking talent here, but perhaps the quality is a little inconsistent. An autumn fruits with whisky sabayon & milk sorbet dessert was very tasty, as was an orange and star anise crème caramel with sesame toile biscuits. Petit fours served with tea consisted of a lovely, rich coconut cream truffle and some rather sickly banana cake. The bill was actively presented to my husband. So I took it & paid it. Come on, it's the 21st century! Most restaurants these days leave it neutrally in the middle of the table. All in all, what seemed like some rather good food was overshadowed by an idiosyncratic level of service. With only the owner (who seems to want to oversee everything personally) & 1 waitress servicing the main room and a party of 14 upstairs, more staff would have been welcome. The waitress was very sweet and pleasant & we were noticeably more relaxed whenever she served us! Whatever it took to get into favour, we never felt we had achieved it (though we could see that other diners had made the grade and were being treated differently). Somehow, I don't see us bothering to try it again.

Having being born and raised in Cambridge, Restaurant 22 was somewhere I'd always wanted to experience and I wasn't disappointed. As an Art student in the 1980's I had always loved the Art Nouveau style stained glass window at the front of this little building and had been intrigued to visit but being an impoverished student it had been beyond my budget! The perfect opportunity finally arrived with our 22nd Wedding Anniversary. Restaurant 22 would be a well chosen surprise venue by my hubby! With the ambiance of dining in someone's private home the atmosphere is both intimate and relaxed. The beautiful Art Nouveau style stained glass window at the front of the dining room is a real draw and truly unique and the candlelit tables and fresh flowers created the perfect romantic setting for an anniversary meal. If the owner is open to constructive suggestions, and from the experience of someone with a lifelong background in Art I would have loved to have seen some carefully chosen antique oil paintings on the walls instead of the modern 1970's / 80's style metal art work which don't fit with the historic architecture of the building or style of the dining room. I know that this would elevate the decor and interior atmosphere to create an even more 'classy', historic and upmarket ambiance, it would particularly emphasise the history and style of the Art Nouveau interior and exterior of the building, which is to me, the absolutely unique visual selling point of the restaurant. My suggestion for perfection would also be for some lovely greenery on the small terrace outside the restaurant, emphasising the French styling, and maybe some pretty lighting, possibly on a canopy leading up to the doorway. I think this would make the restaurant even more attractive, romantic, and more importantly more noticeable in terms of 'kerb appeal'! Some small changes could make a huge difference to the attractiveness of the interior and exterior of the building. I would also agree with a previous reviewer that the restrooms need smartening up to match the fine dining aspirations of the restaurant. This is particularly something that I think women notice when visiting a restaurant. The finishing touches and little gestures of luxury make all the difference! I liked the visitors book outside the restrooms and the little cards to fill in to win a meal at the restaurant through a regular prize draw. After a personal and warm welcome from the owner a lovely waitress gave us very good service throughout the evening. She wasn't able to explain a couple of items on the menu when asked but she promptly and pleasantly went to find out for us. Highlights of the meal were a tangy palette cleansing passion fruit sorbet and delicious crispy plaice with samphire. With just a few little tweaks to some of the dishes and a little more generosity of portion sizes in places the meal would be a ten out of ten for me, and as a real 'foodie' and as an experienced home cook I am extremely discerning and picky when it comes to the quality of the food and menu when dining out! If I eat out I want my food to be as good or better than I can produce in my own kitchen and it definitely was! I enjoyed every course! I was delighted to find that 'Restaurant 22' holds its own against some of the best London dining experiences. I hope any suggestions for improvement are taken as constructive criticism for complete and ultimate perfection as I love this special little restaurant and hope that it continues to survive for many years to come. I believe with a few little changes it could be enhanced even further and after all it's an experience of perfection which will draw customers back time after time. We hope to return again very soon and thankyou to all involved for a lovely evening and some delicious food and wine.

My wife her closest friend and I visited Rstaurant 22 to celebrate their joint 70th birthdays. It was a special occasion and we chose Restaurant 22 based on reviews and recommendations. The restaurant is quirky, it is small, seating around 26 people in what is the front room of an old house. Before the meal we were asked if we wanted pre dinner drinks. My wife's drink of choiceis Kir Royal. I ordered one only for the manager to come to our table after a couple of minutes to tell my wife that she could only have her drink if she ordered a half bottle of champagne as they did not serve by the glass. This was not the response I expected from a restaurant which is expensive and recently voted the best in Cambridge. We were studiously ignored by the manager for the rest of the evening until it was time to pay. Not welcoming nor friendly, just slightly pretentious.Food was Ok as was the service. First visit, last visit for us.

My partner, daughter and myself tried restaurant 22 in order to test it as we were planning on celebrating my 4oth there with all the family. Not a Chance !!!!The food was bland and badly cooked. I had the crab starter that was gritty and the avocado obviously from the week before as its grey appearance proved, My main was the lamb which was bland unseasoned so so dry. The service was poor no check backs till after the meals were eaten. Then too add insult to injury presented with a bill Of £200 for a meal I could have had in a weatherspoons.

Small intimate dining. Your table is yours for the night. This was our 6th visit & it has been superb every time. The menu changes monthly. All seasonal ingredients which are beautifully cooked. Care goes into every morsel. The menu only lists 3 or 4 courses but there are added surprises. There is also a separate dining room upstairs for larger groups.

I can't say enough about this excellent restaurant. We had a superb meal. We have been here quite a few times now and never disappointed, everything cooked to perfection! Great choice on the menu and the food was beautifully presented. Looking forward to going again next year!

My friend and I were prowling Cambridge, determined to avoid mediocre food and prove everyone wrong about English food....what a leftover stereotype! Restaurant 22 delivered on all counts. This restaurant is an intimate, living room setting, with attentive, friendly, good-humored staff and food we really enjoyed. We picked the set menu for June, adding in scallops as an extra charge appetizer, what a great choice. Perfectly cooked, beautifully presented. . The set menu checked in at just under 41 pounds for a 3 course meal. We enjoyed, in addition to the scallops, asparagus, locally shot pigeon breast, superbly cooked, pork belly and matcha green tea cheesecake and lemon tart...and our conversation took a downward turn as all we could say was "MMMM-MMMM, so good!" We felt the wine was reasonably priced, and the set menu a grand value. I hope to be back sooner rather than later

Family dinner to celebrate my nieces graduation. Private room upstairs for 13. Food was absolutely delicious but the room lacked any real atmosphere and the service was poor at best with not enough staff to cover both floors; we waited ages for drinks, food and any sort of customer consideration or service. Great food and well worth a visit but service was just plain poor.

We've made several visits to this restaurant and have never been disappointed. The food is excellent - interesting without being overly fussy or pretentious, the service friendly and quirky, and the atmosphere cozy and personal. We'll definitely be back again.

Quirky family-run restaurant where you dine in a setting that looks like their living room. Would've given it a 4* if they were an average type of place. But the hype around the 22 and the eye-watering price tag (£80 just for food for two and decent wines starting from £35) set my expectations much higher - but sadly they were not met.Food - nice presentation but average taste.Drinks - very basic choice of cocktails, and very limited choice of wines by the glass or half bottle. So if it's dinner for two, you'd better like your wine in bottle volumes.Service - OK but no Michelin star. Too long spent sitting in front of empty plates, waiting for someone to collect and ask if we wanted anything else.

We have been here twice before, upstairs when it was warm and friendly, later when it was more up market and this time to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The service is excellent, quick and with pleasant interactions with the staff....but the food, not so good. Starter was well presented paté, main course was very dry minced rabbit wrapped in a leek leaf. No taste at all. The rest of the plate was ok but not exactly substantial. I noticed the neighbouring table abandoned their rabbit too. Desserts were unimaginative. The best things were the bread, excellent, and the amuse bouche and palate cleansers! I will give it one more try, but wouldn't take a guest there. Expensive too.

No 22, Cambridge was a lovely, cosy and unique restaurant to visit. The service was fab and the food delicious. Should have stayed for dessert but was in a rush to get back to train station! Next time, I will enjoy all courses. Thoroughly recommend this lovely place.

Not exactly what other reviews state, especially as from the front and interior it really could do with an overhaul as it is extremely dated and not very welcoming. I would not order the fish as they simply do not know how to cook it and couldn't give an explanation as to why it was smothered in sauce that didn't compliment the fish whatsoever. They also try to give an extensive list of wines which are just premium replications of cheaper wines - exactly the same stuff. Overly pretentious and not a great experience, plenty of others available in the town centre that are more forward thinking.

This is an inventive restaurant, and quite different from the run of the mill of Cambridge eating. The service can seem strange, for many of the staff English is clearly not their first language, however the overall standard of the food is high, and it deserves to be considered as perhaps quirky, but good.Whilst it isn't exactly a cheap destination, it is quite good value for the standard achieved. It is well worth booking if you wish to go, since the restaurant is quite small in area, and I have on a number of occasions been unable to get a table at short notice.

Sadly this restaurant was not what it says on the tin. The website looks good but the food was disappointing. My partner's fish was served on a mountain of chick peas and sadly there was an attempted charge for an additional glass of wine. Won't be back

This lovely restaurant is quite small, so I'd think booking is essential (our party of eight booked), and the food is quite simply wonderful. They apparently change the menu on a monthly basis, and it's a fixed price menu (with a small supplement for some dishes) of about £40 for three courses (with a pre-starter and a mid-meal sorbet thrown in too). The dishes are imaginative, and delicious. I had the mozzarella and tomato tart to start, and the new season lamb for main - cooked to perfection. The wine list is extensive and very reasonably priced.

We enjoyed a lovely meal here. Having been several times before, we knew we were in for a treat. The food is imaginative, well cooked, beautifully presented and in decent sized portions. It's fine dining but not in that sort of 'self conscious, precious' way sometimes encountered. Highly recommended.

My feelings about Restaurant 22 are mixed. The venue itself is very nice (if a little cold at the beginning of the evening). The dining room is cosy and comfortable. The menu reads well, but sadly my dishes were all served significantly colder than I would expect and were not as tasty as one might have hoped. However it was far from unacceptable. My biggest doubt was about the quality and tone of the service. I feel they are trying for a classy, professional feel. The service was far from either. The suited gent who I guess was the Maître d' could not take a drinks order without repeated visits and had to remake one drink. His explanations of the dishes on offer was also somewhat lacking. All in all a lack lustre performance.

Staying in Cambridge for a few days we noticed this restaurant close to our hotel. We called to reserve a table which was a good idea because the place was busy through the night. This a quality restaurant with great food well worth the cost. We had three courses and left full which sometimes is not the cases in these higher class restaurants. Finally the staff were very helpful and friendly.

This is a restaurant we have been to 4/5 times but is very hit and miss. The food is excellent and consistently excellent even though a little old fashioned. It really is aspiring to be fine dining but is let down by a few things. The room itself is simply the front room of a terraced house which results in either overcrowding and it being difficult to access the chairs or it can be soulless when empty. Last night we had a good meal but it was spoiled by witnessing the more senior serving staff berating the more junior waiter in front of the customers. The way he spoke to him would have risked bullying accusations in most workplaces and was a mild Fawlty/Manuel. Really unprofessional and seemed undeserved too. Again I would emphasise the food quality so it is worth trying but it feels complacent and a little out of touch with what is happening at other good restaurants. The wine list needs a rethink too. Again very traditional and could benefit from real effort and imagination.

Fabulous birthday meal for myself, my boyfriend and his parents. 22 is such a lovely venue with friendly staff and incredible food. Armando is especially knowledgeable and always helpful with wine choices. We enjoyed 3 amazing courses, which were split up by amuse bouche and sorbet. The food was such a high standard and very well presented. I use 22 personally and also for my work, they are always professional and food amazing. I know I can rely on them for great food. Highly recommend!

This intimate restaurant can get very busy so always book in advance. We were there celebrating a birthday & had a great time, as there were 13 of us we had a private dining room upstairs which had a great atmosphere but can be a bit cosy. The food was very good & the wines were excellent, the wait for food & drinks was a little disapointing but it was a Saturday night & they were full so can forgive the wait. Overall a great night

When we arrived I was pleasantly surprised that the Resturant appeared to be a house! When walked in the downstairs area was full of diners and we went upstairs. We shared a room with one other large table. The staff were friendly yet not overly attentive. Unfortunately they had ran out of prosecco so we had to wait over half hour for our wine and only ended up drinking one bottle as there was no attempt to offer extra bottles (surprise as they would have made more money from us!) The food though was amazing. All four of us couldn't fault the foodDefiantly nice place to go, but don't think you'll leave tipsy !

I booked the private dining room for a surprise birthday dinner for my Husband's 50th Birthday. We had a lovely evening, my Husband loved it, as did all the guests. The food was delicious - the best guinea fowl I have ever tasted and amazing home made breads. The private dining room is really nice to hire if you are looking for a more intimate gathering, it holds 14 people and was nice and cosy.Armando, the owner, is a lovely chap and very accommodating. His efforts were appreciated in making the evening special for my Husband.I would definitely go back again!

I booked the whole restaurant for a leaving dinner of 20 people. Armando was very helpful and flexible in setting up the arrangements; made some good suggestions on the wine. On the evening the service was excellent, being flexible and discrete. The food was very good - I had sardines, lamb and rhubarb. Many of my guests have positively commented on the restaurant and the quality of the food. For the fine dining and wine, I felt this was good value, as well as a great evening. My only comment which meant I rated it 4* rather than 5* would be that the decor could be modernised a bit.

The group I was out with were not the quietest of people so it was great to have the room and it was like a private dinning. Fantastic does not begin to describe the experience

We eat out most weeks often Asian cuisine, decent Sunday lunches and fine dining with over 100 years between in the industry feel reasonably qualified to understand food and expectations. We took our friend to 22 as a treat, having not eaten there for a number of years not sure what to expect, the hospitality seemed a bit flat upon being seated with reluctance of the waiter, he also seemed unsure with my choice of wine as he lacked the knowledge. After a gap l had chosen a wine when the owner spoke to us briefly to agree with my choice, the bread came which was delicious followed by starters no black pepper in grinder was resolved. Then a gap in one main course missed by the chef, ok these things happen and was soon resolved, we then enjoyed lovely desserts. Our main issue was not the young man who seemed a little unqualified at waiting on, it was the obvious concentration by the owner to communicate with his regulars rather than offering his hospitality to new business, well actually not until we were ready to go home!
