Regency Dining Room at the North West Castle Hotel in Dumfries & Galloway

We had the hotel breakfast as we were actually on our way to Cairnryan for the ferry. The breakfast was typical Scottish food served and cooked just fine. The hotel experience was very nice with all staff most helpful. One thing to note is that there is no taxi service on Sunday morning before 8:00 a.m. so if you have an early ferry there is no way to get there without a car. Later in the morning there is a bus service to the port area. The port area is about 15 minutes away by bus.

The dining room is absolutely gorgeous, with the tables well spaced apart. The menu prices are very good, The food came quickly and was really tasty with good portions. The staff were really, really friendly. Really great experience.

Visited on a Saturday night, place was not busy which was surprising . Service was very good and the food was very good. two courses without drinks for two was £42 and the drinks wern't that expensive Would recommend

We eat here as the weather outside was blowing a gale and the boats were cancelled. The food was nice but the portion size was just enough, not massive

Excellent food and exceptional staff that can simply not do enough to ensure you have been looked after.

Had 3 course evening meal included in stay price plenty of choice and just right amount. We went for for course had some cheese and crackers to finish off with (had some wine left to finish). Full scottish breakfast next morning was cooked to perfection

This is a grand old dining room with a good old fashioned menu and very helpful waiting staff. Nothing modern here but then a bit of history with an old fashioned menu makes a nice change from plastic modern reality

We were staying on a DB&B basis and were surprised at the quality of the dinner. The meal was very nice, well presented and the staff were very attentive throughout.

Excellent place for a meal, it is a a room of its era large high ceilings with lots of space. The service and food are excellent and would be happy to recommend a meal here anytime.

Stayed for 3 night, definitely will return, great location for exploring, can’t fault any part of our stay. Room spotlessly clean, bed so comfy, quiet location just off Main Street. Breakfast was 1st class, good quality food, really hot fresh coffee, plates were warmed before serving. Evening meal was fab too, Service was exceptional throughout our stay. Nothing was too much trouble, We couldn’t find anything to fault. . Except the wine could be cheaper but who cares about that! Great stay & highly recommended

Wondersful experience at the North West Castle Hotel Dining Room. Our food was excellent, the service was great and the winine and food selection was good. Prices were reasonable for restaurant of this quality.

Two night break, two dinners, food was perfect, waiting staff so friendly and dressed for the part. The dining room was a step back to the golden age immaculately clean and shining chandelers. A very enjoyable experience.

Anyone who loves their food would enjoy a visit to this restaurant. WE stayed for three night and never dreamt of going and trying somewhere else. It was that good

Actually eating here now. The food was ok however the waitress was not. I ordered the Scottish Roast beef and Yorkshire puddings. However when it arrived I didn’t notice the lack of said Yorkshire’s till half way through. When I told the waitress and asked her when my Yorkshire’s would arrive she loudly said “Tomorrow” then as she was walking away and saw I wasn’t laughing she says “ Do you want them”. They arrived well after I had finished fair enough they were tasty but having them with the main event would have been nice.

Had a 2night mid week break, friendly & courteous staff, excellent food could not fault. Lovely large bedroom as I had asked for a walkin shower not that we were disabled. Had our well behaved dog with us as hotel is pet friendly but not the friendliest for pets as they're not allowed in the lounge or bar area so restricted to the bedroom & not to be left in the bedroom so what are you supposed to do with them when you go to eat. We did leave ours in the bedroom as fortunately for us he loves his Crate as he is well behaved after all who would take their dog if he was wild . We sat in the reception area to have a glass of wine which wasn't so cosy but we would return again. We went to see the Fernhill hotel while in the area which is part of the group & we were made so welcome & they allowed us to have coffee with our small dog. Why have different rules when part of the same group?

went for lunch while in area. beautiful dining room-hotel feels very nice on ground floor-we have stayed before so know upstairs is slightly different situation but room where food is served is lovely had nice table and was very quiet. food excellent and service also friendly prompt and discreet. love the ambiance of the place - not expensive for what you getwould recommend

had food in here when staying from the set menu would like to see some more standard meals. was a bit to fancy for me but thats a preference. the set menu is very limited so had to pay extra for a steak which was nice but only thing i would eat.

The service is fantastic here , I had breakfast every day which was served lovely and attentive staff nothing was missed, I can not remember the breakfast times though , I loved it so much staying there and for four evenings the chef impressed with a different theme every night , all fresh local produce and a lot of imagination went into the menu , I never stay anywhere half board but this definately was not what I expected, no buffet food and you were treated very well , I did arrive very late and a lovely club sandwich after 10 pm was made and the offer of more , I stayed Bed Breakfast and Evening Meal , Also after your meal there is lovely cozy sitting areas and bar again with friendly warm staff and good service,

Staff seated you were very attentive made you feel special. There was a meme for breakfast. You could help your self to fruit juice cereal yogurt fresh fruit etc. Table service for your full breakfast. The break fast was excellent as the ingredients were good quality you could taste it and was cooked to Avery high standard.

Al hacer la reserva, me dijo que era vegetariana, sin embargo tanto este mensaje claramente no pasó al personal de cocina como cuando nos recordó a la camarera a su llegada, usted podría decir que no tenía ni idea. Aunque no esperaba un montón de opciones, fue bastante decepcionante y poco imaginativo cuando sólo tenía un plato lleno de queso y huevo sandwiches.

Excelente servicio de las chicas, excelente comida, comer sabroso y bien en su mejor ropa de lino y servilletas, silver sales n pimienta y té y café se sirve en el salón con tablet casero.

Ich hatte Frühstück, Mittagsbuffet und Abendessen hier. Morgens gibt es ein kleines Buffet zur Auswahl mit Obst, Müsli, Joghurts und Brot. Dazu bestellt man sich nach Belieben frisch gekochtes sowie Toast und Kaffee. Insgesamt gut. Das Mittagsbuffet war ebenfalls gut, aber fleischlastig. Als vegetarische Varianten gab es immer nur diverse Salate, nichts warmes. Große Dessert Auswahl, natürlich sehr britisch.

Having never written a review before,I felt compelled to after my recent disastrous dinning experience. After enjoying a festive meal in the past I decided to treat my mother to the Boxing Day Buffet,expectations for the meal were high. However the experience was not the sought after meal we had imagined - instead it left a bitter taste in everyone's mouth from start to finish.We had barely taken our seats when we were abruptly asked if we wanted soup or orange juice. There was no warm welcome,and in all honesty we felt as though the relatively young staff couldn't wait to get us out,they appeared to be more interested in setting tables than catering to the diners. Service was not a priority. On such an occasion a more experienced member of staff should have been present to ensure everyone was happy and catered to.The choice of accompaniments left a lot to be desired with the main course. We were expecting a selection of seasonal vegetables,but were perplexed to find tomatoes,boiled eggs and cold pasta. Not the usual choice to have with gravy...My sister and her grandson also attended there was no children's type food,as a result he had an orange juice and some ice cream. The £12.50 charge for this was utterly astonishing !The pudding was also unimaginative and tasteless. The cream tasted as though it was nearing it's shelf life. Half of my mother's tea was spilled and no top up offered,the absence of a mint or mince pie didn't go unnoticed either.Upon leaving the girl asked if our meal was okay. My sister replied that every aspect was terrible. The member of staff appeared unconcerned,but stated that she would pass our comments on.One word sums up our experience. Abysmal. For the money spent for three adults and a child we left feeling despondent and deprived of a decent meal. We do try to support local businesses but after this festive farce we won't be returning.

Visited today for a family Boxing Day buffet meal. 1.30pm table. Soup was ok. Buffet was not so good. The choice was awful. Imagine serving meat but no hot accompaniments, just salad items and not very imaginative ones at that. Service was bog standard. We were not courted as is expected of this establishment. An incredibly young staff without any experienced staff on is probably why. Even the young McMillan girl who appeared to be in charge was uninterested in diners and more in setting up for later. We served ourselves the buffet and it was then promptly cleared away preventing us from going up for anything else. There was absolutely nothing for my children and no offer of anything they might enjoy more than cold meat and salad items. We served ourselves dessert and it was then cleared away as well. Honestly! I definitely wanted to try a piece of cake but I wasn't getting it. Coffee and tea was served without a mince pie and we were then left to it and made to feel like we should leave, so we did. Attending on Boxing Day has been something the family have done for 3 years now. Perhaps there will be a rethink next Boxing Day. Very disappointed. My parents dined 10/12 and had an awful experience. They emailed in a complaint and are still to hear back from anybody. Quite clearly this place isn't interested in customer relations. Doubt I'll be back.

I took my two sisters and my wife for dinner to The North West Castle, Stranraer on Saturday 10th December 2016. The whole experience was underwhelming to say the least and it started with an uninspiring menu with very little choice.The food was very poor both in terms of the quality and the presentation and looked as if it had been prepared and cooked by a complete amateur. Plates were cold and it looked as if food was tipped onto the plate with scant regard for presentation.I did not complain at the time for fear of upsetting my guests but as I paid, I felt as if I was being robbed!!I won't ever be back and should have listened to advice offered by friends who had been before and had much the same experience.

We really enjoyed the food, service and atmosphere in the Regency dinning room, we missed the piano player, the background music was ok but you can't beat live music. The menu covered most tastes and I especially liked the cranican.

The venue is a stone throw from the town centre. Access from the main road and a nice size parking in front of the hotel. Entrance is very nice with an old revolving door. The tea was served in the dinning room which is very grand and nicely preserved. Spread of lots of sandwiches and a cake stand with plenty tray bakes and cakes. All very nicely presented and extremely tasty. Maybe even too much to clean all plates... Staff is very polite, welcoming and above all profesional. Will come again for sure as this was a real treat!

We ate there as part of a half board deal. Usually on these deals the food is very average but we felt that, here, both choice and presentation were excellent. At bot breakfast and dinner the dining room was very busy with conference delegates and a coach party but staff levels were adequate and service did not suffer.

The title of my review says it all. The staff were friendly, attentive and efficient, the food was brilliant and the olde world atmosphere of the room was charming. on one morning the breakfast service was extremely busy but the girls were not at all flustered and did a marvellous job feeding many hungry guests.at dinner we had great service once again with excellent food. we just cuoldn't finish our main courses and it was quite sad to have to leave such great food uneaten and we didn't even look at the sweet menu so cannot comment on it.

Lovely meal and excellent service in a traditional style dining room. We stayed on a DBB basis and the choice of food was good, well presented and nicely cooked.

On our five day break we had breakfast and dinner here each day. There were many choices for breakfast from the buffet or the kitchen. Including local kippers, bacon and eggs. The dinners were splendid. A choice of main course each evening from fish, fowl meat or vegetarian. All well cooked, beautifully presented and served, accompanied with well kept wines from an extensive and well priced wine list.

Staff were very good, food average (duck tasteless) desserts were disappointing (lemon drizzle, very dry & hard) also the cheese portions were tiny. We had to wait nearly 30mins for coffee.

I have stayed here on a number of occasions to play the local golf courses. The staff are always friendly and polite and hotel is always very clean. My one complaint was you could hear the people in the next room as I was woken at 1.30 in the morning people speaking apart from that a very enjoyable stay

Excellent food and very helpful staff who satisfied our dietry requirems]ents. My wife absolutely loved the Melba Toast served with breakfast THE Castle Grill consisted of bacon egg tomato black pudding potato scone loads of toast there were also morning rolls various fruit juices yogurt cereals and fruit it was impossible not to be completely satisfied. Dinner was 3 courses with 4 starters 4 mains and three sweets followed by coffee/tea served in the residents lounge with excellent tablet at a roasting coal fire.

Great food and menu, enjoyed the experience though we felt a bit left out from the hotel resident guest experience... no-one told us how and where to get coffee and after dinner drinks.

From 1st entering staff were attentive ,friendly and helpful,was having set dinner but choice was very good and chef's attention to detail and display was excellent, food arrived hot and touching plates was to be avoided but staff warned of this when neccessary, all in all a lovely experience.

The dinner menu gave an excellent choice and the food was up to the standard expected from a four star hotel. Staff are friendly and smartly dressed.We were treated to live music on the grand piano and enjoyed relaxing in the residents bar for coffee after the meal. Cost of meal was very reasonable for an establishment of this standard.

To dine in the REGENCY Dining Room is a charming & pleasant trip back in time experience. Great food choices. Brilliant service.

Had a gorgeous meal, with a varied menu to choose from with optional a la carte or set price for 4 courses. A very reasonable price for the quality of dishes on offer. Beautifully cooked local fare, attractively presented, excellent service and a good wine list ... would definitely re-visit!

Live locally and six of us had dinner in the 'Castle' (first time in a very long time for me). I have to say that I was extremely pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. From the table settings to the waiting staff and of course the food, everything was first class. Four courses and then coffee in the ballroom downstairs - there's music on down there in the winter for residents and diners - who knew? I just felt the atmosphere in the dining room (it was absolutely packed) was fantastic and I will definitely return to eat there again - just a great vibe about the place - surprised!

I enjoyed a well cooked breakfast in the sumptuous surroundings of the Regency Dining Room served by very attentive and meticulous waitresses. The views from the room are very good.

Ate here five nights while staying at the hotel. Very classy, very old school and very elegant. The menu is rather limited but it is well thought out. Food is fresh and interesting and usually with a local flavour. I was impressed.A pianist plays the grand piano to complete the 1960s scene. Highly recommended!

We were in the area for the weekend and decided to try The North West Castle for dinner. This turned out to be a good move. We were made to feel very welcome. The dinner was first class. The ambiance in the restaurant was greatly helped by a pianist playing the grand piano and the waiting staff were superb.

Absolutely nothing was too much trouble. The food was lovely, arrived hot and was made to feel welcome.

This was the first time we had used the restuarant at the North West Castle and can honestly say it will not be the last. I had booked the special offer of four courses and a bottle of wine for two people, costing £53.00. I could not fault anything during our visit, from the staff to the food. To think this restuarant is 10 minutes from our house and we have not used it before is shocking, we will recommend it to anyone who will listen and it will not be long before we are back...

We stayed at the hotel for an extended period and ate here a number of times. I have to say the stand out thing apart from the food here is the staff (I hope they read these reviews). Everyone from the restaurant hostess (who was always up for some banter!) to the staff who served us were fantastic.The food is based on a set menu (vegetarian or non) with a choice of starters, then soup, then main, dessert then coffee and tablet. Sounds like alot, however the portions are perfect sizes and compliment each other perfectly. The food is fantastic, and the best thing is, the chefs are always happy to alter meals if a certain element doesn't suit you.If you're in the area it's definitely worth paying a visit if only to make acquaintances with the staff! The only downside is that the pianist who plays during the serving of dinner can be a little loud making conversations with friends not as easy as they could be!

Quality, taste, presentation all superb. We were on a dinner bed and breakfast deal, but the food was outstanding. As nice as we have had anywhere. Recommend it to anyone!

My husband & I stayed here with our daughter this weekend & I have to say we couldn't fault the service, food, facilties or value for money. The 4 course set menu dinner has fantastic choices to suit all tastes. Our family room was a very decent size & comfortable, even had a four poster bed! We booked online & got what I regard as an exceptional deal for our money. Every member of staff is pleasant & they can't do enough for you in every area of the hotel. My husband & I have stayed here on numerous occasions & after this stay we wouldn't hesitate to hurry back. Well done to everyone involved in the running of this hotel, you are doing a grand job :-)

I must admit that I really visit the wonderful 'Mediterranean' swimming pool as a guest from another hotel in the group, The hotel and restaurant are wonderful. the menu is good, the food is lovely, the staff are terrific. You will want to return!

What a treat! Called in for a coffee and were shown into the bar area adjacent to the restaurant by the friendly owner and served by a pleasant waitress ! The alpine curling rink was hosting a fascinating curling competition so decided to eat breakfast there . The breakfast grill provided was ok with coffee and toast but a little overpriced at £12.00.The setting was memorable and the staff so pleasant and helpful I would say its worth a visit! The prices on the snack menu all looked reasonable too!

food and place is great staff are fun and meals are excellent overall fantastic they have everyrhing you need if your looking for a place to atay here would be that place its got a pool and ice rink inside with the town close by if your wanting to go shopping

We stayed for two nights, both nights the variety of choice for the four course meal was exceptional.The food was cooked to a high standard ( we are fussy). The presentation and extras such as basil mousse with roast lamb was superb.Breakfast was something to look forward to and set you up for the day.Great friendly service, in fine surroundings with non-intrusive piano playing to set the tone.

Remarkable in every respect. The food was divine. The service is always way beyond the norm and the setting tasteful. A wonderful dining experience. We have been many times and look forward to it every year on our return.

was recently at a wedding here and the food was superb. staff were quick and well organised. 1 negative was at the evening buffet a member of staff was unable to help when asked what certain things were. but apart from that everyone was friendly and helpful.

There is nothing less conducive to a relaxed meal than watching over-burdened staff struggling to cope in a crowded restaurant. This was most certainly NOT the case in the Regency Dining Room where an abundance of friendly servers ensured that each guest was treated as such. The quality of the service was only surpassed in the quality of the food which was second to none. Overall, a wonderful experience.

Superb food accompanied with by a pianist playing a wider range of popular themes and some nostalgic Scottish memorables. The food was amongst the best we ate in Scotland - attention to fine detail and old fashion courteous service. A large dining room with "after dinners" served in the lovely lounge.Part of a grand old hotel. We will be back for more

This restaurant is still thankfuly one of those i thought was no longer around, it is simply elegance and class rolled into one nothing is too much for the staff the chef knows good food and suppliers none of this micro wave rubbish or fine dining portions, this is real food cooked to your personal taste bon appetit
