We had a good roast dinner, all fresh vegetables and plenty of it. Service was good and very friendly 😊

Vibe not good, waited a while for our food, which was basic tbh. Won't be returning.

Sam, our waitress was very Polite, Professional and a credit to her profession and the Red Lion Horndean.

My group met for lunch here but the cleaning staff must have been away with no stand in. The floor at our table and other tables was filthy with food which the waitress said must have been from the night before. Were we expected to think that acceptable or hadn't the manager inspected prior to opening? No cleaner appeared but the waitress hoovered for us. She was very courteous and we were happy to tip her. I've never noticed this appalling lack of cleanliness here before and now I won't be eating here again. You've lost a customer.

Limited food selection "mainly brown" and slow drinks table service

Ben who served us was fantastic and super friendly, he kindly assisted with a special surprise for my husband. The food was yummy and not expensive at all.

Faith was amazing, really good with our 5 year old. Very attentive.

Rubbish bar service. Twice I've been and twice I've been ignored.. Bar staff don't care what the queue order is.

Great Sunday lunch Good variety of meat, veg and extras….great service from Ben…very prompt as we arrived just before a number of groups. Only comment - it’s could have been warmer but wasn’t so bd we needed to complain or return for reheating. Pud choice was good too.

Very historic old pub. nice atmosphere, decor. Server was in your face. . We chose not to leave a tip as our food was delayed. Not everyone can afford to tip.!! Felt pushed into giving them the change as we paid cash, the server had our change in their pocket and asked if we wanted it!, which made it uncomfortable to say no!! I didn't appreciate this behaviour at all as i said we declined to tip. 2024. FEB 2025 DISGUSTING ATTITUDE OF THE SAME MEMBER OF STAFF A YEAR LATER!!!... after checking internet 🛜 BEFORE travelling as two buses are required for me to get there, I met with my mother and my dog 🐕 to dine in. Upon arrival we were greeted at the door by the same female server as we'd had before, only to be presented with a very rude/borderline aggressive attitude as she forcefully told us that NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED! We were both taken aback by her greeting. My mum then pressed her on this as it clearly says on all internet searches that dogs are welcome. The female was very rude towards my mum, saying dogs aren't and have never been allowed. We told her that it clearly says on the internet that it's " Dog friendly". This member of staff needs addressing over this matter. The internet information needs to be rectified. My mum will be phoning to make an official complaint.. very upsetting experience and we won't be returning.

The Red Lion is a great place, especially for that part of the day when you can't be bothered to cook tea and have a little luxury that doesn't break the bank.

Have been here several times. Recently a 90th Birthday celebration and a Wake. Lovely comfortable atmosphere. Good pricing. Spotless. Staff excellent very helpful. Plenty of parking. Next door to a Premier Inn.

Had a Christmas Celebration for a large group of friends. Pretty good but not brilliant.

Had to wait for 45 minutes for our food even though the place was quiet and we had booked, just as we were debating leaving our food came. Not the best I've eaten there. Suffice to say we didn't bother with pudding. Table booked for 7pm and we left at 9pm. Not sure we will be returning to our local.

Went tonight for my Husband’s Birthday. We were seated as soon as we arrived. Our waitress Sam was extremely helpful and polite. The food was excellent. We will definitely go back.

Had booked a table for 12.30pm today a Wednesday. It was by no means full, but we waited over an hour before asking where our food was. Were told it was on its way. No apology for this. Waited another 10minutes! Then realized almost straight away that the food (Christmas mains 1 turkey and 2 steaks ) were cold.we asked them to be reheated. After a further 15 minutes meals were returned. My turkey dinner wasn't hardly better than a frozen birds eye frozen meal and the two steak dinners although edible not great. The staff were obviously some what stressed, we had plenty of time to observe things and although there was a notice on the door regarding delivery issues no apologies were given and no one asked how our food was. This was a special Christmas lunch prearranged for three old school friends. We were so disappointed we didn't stay for deserts. Even paying the bill was an effort for the staff at the bar where we were asked to pay. I had eaten the turkey Christmas meal a week earlier at this establishment with another group of friends and the meal was very good with good service. However, I will not be going there again. There were obvious kitchen issues everyone in the restaurant was waiting extremely long times. It was so bad I wish we hadn't paid as it really wasn't worth it - at least not today. 11th December.

Four of us went for the festive meal today, only to be told that they have no turkey, or roast dinner, very disappointing, as booked a few weeks ago. Waited an hour for our meal to arrive once ordered, and also a long wait for the pudding.

Met friends for lunch. Food was hot and tasty. Our waitress Sam was smartly dressed friendly and obliging. Very good value for money. Got plans to visit again already!!! Thank you to all especially Sam

Food was hot and delicious and I would highly recommend this lovely pub for a traditional roast dinner. Andy the chef is amazing.

Unfortunately sadly we chose the festive Christmas dinner for our lunch which we were very disappointed with as it must have been reheated, the meat was tough and the roast potatoes were awful! I would not have served this up to my clients let alone to customers. If food is reheated it should state this on the menu. Slow service

I’d actually give less starts if the option was available. Sat down to eat our roast dinner, mine had a huge long hair resting across the top, I called the manager on shift who said “Oooh yes so it does” walked away with my dinner, continued to sit for a further 10 minutes, no idea where my dinner had gone, no offer of a drink an alternative or anything to even suggest they were replacing my meal - I found the same manager again to then be welcomed with a (the only way I can describe) slanging match about how he’d told me he was taking my dinner to be replaced, not an apology, no mention of how would you like us to deal with this situation, I was welcomed with a very confrontational manager repeatedly telling me I was wrong and then walked off to tell me he wasn’t arguing, no offer to refund the meal and then other member of staff on duty was equally as unhelpful when he brought the dinner back over, I told him everyone had finished and I now longer felt like eating, his attitude wasn’t great either, at that point did said I’d never return, which fell on death ears, didn’t seem to bother anyone they’d lost a regular customer! The sandwich I bought from the local shop was the alternative, will not be returning after an awful experience.

We enjoyed a lovely lunch with a friend. Service by Emily was very good. Drinks were delivered quickly. Our meals were tasty, well presented and served within an acceptable time. We shall definitely be visiting again.

What can I say our server was called Matthew he was very good helpful with the grandchildren getting them drawing and crayons getting a highchair he was very smiley and chatting with us all. The roast I would highly recommend very tasty and lots of it and very good value for money.we will definitely be coming back.

Great service, food was served hot and cooked well was better than more expensive places and no real wait for starter or main meal either and everything was served perfectly.

Went for Sunday lunch, had to ask more than once how long food would be after waiting more than an hour to be told it hadn’t been started yet. Multiple mistakes with the food and told the chef “didn’t want to make the gravy” for one of them??? The lack of communication on waiting times and the average food meant we won’t be coming back any time soon. We weren’t the only people upset, we saw multiple people having same complaint.

We've been coming here on occasions for over a decade, but this latest visit was a disappointment. It took over 10 mins to get our drinks and another 20 mins to get food. It was mid-week so not overly busy. It would be a nice touch if some complimentary breadsticks be brought out when they know there are long waiting times for mains. And prices are soooo expensive now - we don't go unless we have a voucher. A nice ambience and helpful staff but there are cheaper options to dine out locally and I'm afraid value is the priority for most of us these days...

Drinks at table arrived after 1 and a half hours. Some food arrived after 2 hours wait. Cancelled main course as we didn't know how much longer that would be. Went and got fish and chips from take away next door and ate them in the restaurant. Apparently thus type of service happened another night that week. The experience in the restaurant was very disappointing as we had always had a good experience there. Won't be going back. Wouldn't recommend it.

Food was good but the table location was in the corridor by the ladies loo.

Decided to go out for an evening meal last minute, chose the Red lion and booked a table for half an hour later so that was handy! On arrival we were met and seated by our server , there were plenty of spare tables so it was nice and quiet ( the world cup footie was on so that might of helped) , after ordering our food it took a while to arrive but we were both very happy with our meals and had an enjoyable evening there, would definitely go again.

Red Lion is always good for food and service but special mention this time for Emma Noel who gave a special warm welcome for some relatives visiting from Australia after a long flight it was impromptu last moment booking but we had a great table and very cheery and helpful attention from Emma. Would recommend this nice pub to others! Thanks very much Emma for helping to make it a lovely night!

Good food, good surroundings, quick service.

Excellent service from Robbie (extra special shout out for this gent for going all out to enhance our experience). Food is standard fare but nice nevertheless. My wife loved the Chocolate torte with freeze-dried raspberries. Apparently the menu changes tomorrow so that may not be on it still. Look out for Robbie!

Great service and great food for a great price!

We frequently use the Red Lion at Horndean and today was the worst experience. We were kept waiting to book in as the restaurant was very quiet and no staff seemed to be around, even at the bar! Once seated we were only given the main menu and not the Sunday Roast menu so presumed that all the roasts had gone but a family of 4 came in after us and was given tge roast menu to which all 4 of them had roasts. When we received our meals I commented on not receiving roast menu and was told I should have asked. Then we were given the dessert menu and when it came to take our choice was told one of the choices had all gone. Very disappointed and choosing a bacon and cheese burger to have 1 piece of streaky bacon is a bit mean, Even burger king burgers have 2 rashers.

Evening meal whilst staying in the Premier Inn was OK, but low quality, tasteless mixed grill for £18. No plans to return. Service was perfectly friendly at least. Breakfast was significantly better with a good buffet and plentiful cooked breakfast for £11.

Food was good but was just warm not hot. I had no potatoes. When I told server she brought some in a dish but sadly cold.

Out with friends and visited on a whim. Haddock and chips and the steak and ale pie were good.

The food was ok The price was excellent

Burgers and puddings very good quality. Service was quick . If you want quiet dinning then mid week is a good time to go. Overall bill very reasonable.

Whilst staying at the adjacent Premier Inn we visited here for dinner. 4 plus 1 child, over 2 hours later we finally paid our bill! The service and attention was not good and steadily got worse as the restaurant filled up with diners. Very fortunately we were not in a rush but had to hurry things along as the child in our group approached her bedtime. So points for proximity and the meal quality, but badly let down by the service level, most likely due to the lack of serving staff.

We have been visiting the Red Lion for many years and have always been very happy with the food and service. Our most recent visit was the best yet with super fast service and value.

Great all you can eat breakfast with a good choice of items. Service was good.
