bit of a strange review this, the location is great literally slapbang on the crossroads in the centre of the town, the staff are pleasant and friendly, had a family room which was adequate, double bed and two singles in a separate area off the same room be aware that there is no shower screen in the bathroom so water does go everywhere baths are to be recommended.be advised that the red lion has recently looking at other reviews decided to change its menu, and NO longer does normal pub food, its a deli/tapas contemporary menu, you choose meats and cheese of the menu and comes with accompaniments according to the boards.this is what i feel lets it down as we saw nobody actually eating evening meals in there so the pub/bar was empty and had no atmosphere.saying that though the breakfast was fine and good, negatives apart from the menu change were the town clock that rings on the hour every hour, though not the hotels fault, the street lights attached to the building that buzz/hum when on,again not the hotels fault, maybe the council might change them to LEDs one day.i half expected the hotel inspector Alex polizzi to appear at any moment.as it had the feeling of being empty and just about surviving.

Me and my hubby decided to book this hotel overnight as we're attending a wedding in the area the following day, thank goodness it was only one night. From the outside its a very pretty old building right in the centre of a lovely town but not what we expected inside. For the amount we paid the room was cold and dingy and had a strong smell of damp. The outside noise made it impossible to sleep and just the overall vibe wasn't good. The food was tasteless and hardly warm when it came out which was thoroughly disappointing as the pub was practically empty. I wish i had seen the reviews before hand because i certainly wouldn't have booked. Avoid.

We went here for lunch, we were going to have lunch by the river but the prices were just too expensive. We walked in to find the place empty but we received a warm welcome by the lady behind the bar. My husband and I ordered the chicken bacon stack which came with chips and salad for roughley £8 each. The portions were really big and the food was delicious and tasty. My daughter had the chicken wings and chips and she really enjoyed them. It was around£33 for 3 of us to eat and have a drink. The lady who served us was lovely and efficient and she talked to my daughter about the toys she had with her and we didn't have long to wait between ordering and our food arriving. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Thank you.

The portions of the mains were of a good size, but it was slightly overpriced. 3 mains and 3 soft drinks came to nearly £40! Have in mind, one was only a small sandwich. We ate here one evening whilst staying at the hotel. To be honest, it wasn't our first choice because we couldn't get in to where we originally wanted to eat but it was a pleasant meal nevertheless. Portion sizes were good - I had the salmon and my partner chose the steak; his was very good but I prefer my salmon less well done, perhaps I should have said so when I ordered. However, the sauce was nice and there were plenty of vegetables. You can choose to sit in the restaurant or the bar, so we chose the bar area as it seemed pleasantly relaxed and the restaurant was very quiet (there was a lot going on in Wareham that night so we presumed other people had gone elsewhere). There were other couples dining, as well as some families for whom there seemed to be a good variety of choices. Worth a try.

Visited today with family. Was told they had no apple juice, not a good start. Then after ordering 2 starters, we were told one of them was not available after paying for it. The mains arrived several minutes before the starter - a cheese souffle. It was not what I expected - very flat. I ate it, but after looking at images of other souffles, I could tell that this one was not up to the standard I expected from a 4star place. When I finished my main, I realised that it was swimming in water... which a curry should not be! My husband was satisfied with his meal and had told the waitress that the meals were fine. However, I went to complain and the manager laughed at me because the meal had been eaten. I would not have been able to tell the water residue from the curry until the end anyway. He refunded £10. However, upon returning to the table, I looked at my 2 and 4 year olds meals - kids fish and chips. They had eaten a few chips and we broke the fish into 5 pieces each. They had both eaten one piece when I saw fish bones sticking out of the fish. Not just one - at least 5! I complained again to the manager who laughed in my face, refused to refund their meals because they had eaten one bit of the fish and a few chips. His response - it's fish and there is meant to be bones in it and if we were giving fish to children we should remove them all before they were given them... excuse me?! My kids eat fish all the time in restaurants and never have we been served a kids meal with inch long sharp fish bones in. He told me I was being ridiculous when I said that fish bones could be fatal to young children. Again he laughed at me. Disgusting and shocking behaviour from a supposedly responsible adult. Never ever eat here. Other reviews talk of fish bones and watery curry, and a couple in the restaurant also said they have never had bones in their fish before eating there. My children could be seriously ill and now we have to make sure that they are not adversely affected by this over the coming days! Just hope they haven't already swallowed a fish bone that could perforate their intestines! Shocked beyond belief!

We enjoyed a light lunch from an imaginative bar menu with a bottle of reasonably priced wine, and were efficiently served by our highly personable waitress Mia, who greatly enhanced the few hours we spent in Wareham. Our advice to ‘strangers’ would be to avoid the more obvious tourist-traps and head straight for the Red Lion – which is certainly what we would do on any subsequent visit to these parts.

on our way to must-see Durdle Door, we stopped at this pub/restaurantfor a nosh since there as nothing proper to eat further along towards ourdestination; the meals were cheap, flavorful and filling although certainly nothingparticularly special, and not worth going out of one's way for... the beer was first rate,as should be expected in a British pub, and the place was bright and airy, with good music on the loudspeakers, which is always a plus when eating in a pub... although everything was passably pleasant, i just don't understand all the ravesother travelers are giving it, but they DID have some Nando's peri-peri sauce to spice our somewhat bland meals up a bit- however the small ramaken of it they brought out to us was announced as their last, so possibly other patrons were also clamoring forsome added flavor that day... can't rave about this place, but wouldn't tell you to avoid it either- and on the way to Durdle Door, it is pretty much the last chance to get one's grub on, and gives good value for money

Our first day of our holiday and hoping to find somewhere nice for dinner. Time was getting on and we were quite hungry and so went straight into Wareham and chose the big pub on the corner. It was quite dark inside and did not give off a nice atmosphere, the waitress was welcoming, she took our order and left. She returned to say they had no pasta (quite a basic ingredient, I thought) and being vegetarian I went for the mushroom pie with veg and potato. After a fairly long wait the food arrived, but it wasn't too good. The broccoli looked yellowish and the cauliflower smelt horrible, the pastry had not been cooked enough although the mashed potato was edible. The waitress returned and asked if it was all ok and I explained my dissatisfaction, she apologised and took the plate away. After a while she returned giving me cash to the cost of the meal, I would rather have enjoyed some nice food.

The staff was wonderful and friendly. Hotel location is awesome. Right in the middle of town with easy walking access to the River, Restaurants and shops throughout town.We will stay there on our next visit.

Excellent location in the centre of Wareham. Parking was a bit tight and limited but we did alright on our 2 night stay. The rooms were very nicely furnished and had all facilities but the shower tended to flood the bathroom. The breakfast was substantial and the sausages in particularly were excellent. For somewhere in the centre of town it was very quiet.

we wanted a Sunday roast on our way home from the Swanage Blues & Roots Festival weekend and basically this was the only affordable place serving when we hit Wareham at nearly 4pm. We were a bit concerned when we walked in to a large pub/hotel but quickly chose roast beef cos that's what we were after. We did have a look at the rest of the menu whilst waiting and it looks good - might try something different when next in area.We didn't have to wait long, two huge warm (important) plates full of delicious succulent beef, red cabbage, mashed swede, roast parsnips and potatoes, a large yorkshire pud and loads of lovely gravy soon arrived, followed by the (possibly homemade?) horseradish sauce we asked for - gorgeous. They boast unlimited veg, so presumably you can ask for more if you want it, but we had plenty to fill us up for our homeward journey. I would definitely recommend this place for food on a Sunday, and particularly to those people heading back home after a busy full on weekend in Swanage :-) It is actually a hotel and pub so I know nothing of the place at other times but the areas I saw and used were very clean, attractively decorated and functional, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The disabled access toilet in particular was very impressive - clean, tidy, smelt nice and properly set up for use as intended.

We had tried 2 other restaurants but couldn't get in so went to the Red Lion. It was very quiet which is always a worry. However, there was a reasonable menu. Our food came quickly and was well presented and delicious. The food was very good value and the staff were polite and attentive. The pub/restaurant is very well laid out, beautifully decorated and spacious. I wonder why this place is always quite quiet.

The food and the choices in this restaurant were first class. Everything I had was cooked to perfection with pleasant options to choose from. Everything from posh bangers and mash to beef bordelaise. Couldn't fault it.

Not an extensive menu but what we had was very good and filling. An excellent choice of beers and ciders, and a nice ambience. Popular with families, so perhaps not ideal if you want a quiet drink.

Went in with my 6 year old daughter. She had whitebait with tartare sauce, and it was an excellent sized portion and really nicely cooked. She loved it!I had a baguette with Parma ham, stilton and chutney, accompanied by chips and a tasty dressed salad. Superb tasting combination, loads of ham and cheese so very impressed.Nice pint of ale too...Jolly good!

First impression when you walk in is great, but went down hill. On the first visit my husband and I were seated next to the kitchen door where one particular waitress took it as a challenge to swing the door at the table and I spent some time catching my glass. My husband ordered BBQ chicken that turned out to be a regular chicken breast with thin bbq sauce spread over with cheese melted on top. Bore no resemblance to the description and the gentleman at the next table complained about his meal too. My meal was adequate but no more.A few nights later we returned with the family. Taking orders for 8 people was tricky. After an hour we asked if our meals would be much longer. Waitress shrugged and said they were busy (probably a quarter of the available tables were full). At this point my daughters friend, who works in hotel management went to complain to the duty manager who was very polite, offered us free drinks and got our food out to us straight away. Sausages were overlooked and all meals had clearly been kept warm for a while. However, we were hungry and started eating. The smallest member of our group then spilt her milk on the floor. A passing waitress stopped momentarily, my daughter asked for a cloth to clear up the spillage, the waitress looked nonplussed and tossed a tea towel down and left my daughter and husband to clear the best they could. Not a hint that she might help or provide suitable equipment. There is an urgent need for staff training at the Red Lion.

Very nicely kept pub, freer interior that looks like it was refurbished fairly recently, friendly customers and a very pleasant afternoon tea in the bar.

The food was very good, service was good, and the pricing for the main.meals were excellent value for money, the deserts were in my opinion slightly over priced. Waitress was a bit keen in collecting plates before everyone had finished ,(I noticed this on another table as well)

We ended up here after rejecting two other restaurants for appalling lack of vegetarian food. How lucky we were! The service was fabulous, the food really really good, with great choice for vegetarians (although only two of us are vegetarian, all four of us had the vegetarian options as they were so good). The mushroom stroganoff was perfect and the mushroom pie (also gluten free but you'd never know) was divine. Unbelievably they have 82 types of Gin! We only managed to try three between us so will have to return..

I've never written a review before, but after time and again getting complete rubbish food in this place not to mention poor customer service I need to put it out there. We live about 300m up the road from the Red Lion and have had more disappointing meals than good, they just have no personal interest in their service, quality of food, presentation, such a waste the place has been done up lovely and could be really nice. having to pay for utter soulless rubbish with my hard earned cash is really disappointing, I've vowed NOT to eat in there again, again!

I have only ever been here for a quick drink after walking in the area so cannot comment on the food. I have always found it to be very well keep and extremely clean. The staff are always very polite . I am sitting in the bar at the moment and although not in view today I recall that the lady half of ownership is lovely. The only downside is that it is a little empty and lacking in life. But no doubt that is not always the case.

Perfectly nice place but the only draught cyder was from Suffolk or Herefordshire. Not that i have anything against these but such a shame that local produce was not available. I moved on.

Popped into the Red Lion with visiting family, at short notice for lunch. Sadly we didn't receive a particularly warm welcome .We ordered lunch, a salmon salad for me. Very disappointing, barely any salmon and mainly salad leaves not even cucumber or tomato. Very expensive for an extremely bland meal. Won't be returning any time soon.

Excellent roadside local pub. Staff are very hospitable. Ervice is very good. I think the menu I'd a bit limited as I don't like burgers and not keen on smoked dishes. But the steaks are great, some of thd best I've had.

Excellent food and service. Good vibe. My only criticism was why does the waiter have to crouch down next to us to take our order? I’m not under 10! Stand upright while taking an order from an adult please.

I asked if they had a real ale. I was told they had an IPA. It was poured and given to me. It was not a real ale! It was a freezing cold keg beer that I really couldn’t drink and I was charged £5.20. I tried to complain to the obviously under-trained and frankly couldn’t-care-less female bar person but it was like water off a duck’s back. I said I was mis-sold but she didn’t seem to understand. I asked who owned the pub and was told “Stonegate”. I left the pint virtually in-drunk on the bar, hoping I would be able to claim a refund from Stonegate but the pub is not recognised on their website, other than from them looking for a tenant. I am out of pocket, fed up and very annoyed! I would advise anyone who likes a proper ale: DO NOT USE THIS PUB!

Dropped in after a trip to Norden and back. The old carriage is quite spacious, bright and attractive. Lots of outside seating on the platform and the grass bank. They also have a small book stall to raise funds for the railway. Prices are fine and the food and drinks are up to standard, but not as good as the Norden cafe.

Great place for lunch or a stop off for a drink and cake... definitely recommend the Dirsrt Draught cider and the Dorset apple cake, warmed with ice cream
