This place is the embodiment of homemade roast dinner. Everything tastes exactly as you remember from childhood. Tender delicious meats, fresh vegetables and the most delectable cauliflower cheese. It takes a lot to create a roast that tastes homely rather than overly commercial and Red Castle Tea Room gets it spot on.

This is such a lovely tearoom and everybody was very friendly. They make a very tasty leek and mushroom tart and they are happy to be flexible about swapping things around on the menu eg chips instead of bacon. The views from the outside seating area are amazing. Great place to have lunch and then visit White Castle, just down the road.

A wonderful setting, but very disappointing food and worrying hygiene. We ordered two baguettes, two scones, a cappuccino, and an elderflower. The baguette was not raw but undercooked, the lettuce served with it was wilted with rotten black bits. The cappuccino was very weak and much more of a latte. Finally the scones were lovely and fluffy but unfortunately very burnt at the bottom. Since it was all young staff (all teenagers), we did not want to complain. But, it’s evident as hospitality professional myself that further training and supervision is necessary.

Happened to find this place by doing a Facebook search for afternoon tea in Monmouthshire. I booked an afternoon tea for 4 and asked for an ammendment and it was no problem at all. We were very impressed with the amount and quality of the food. 5 varieties of sandwhich, homemade quiche, sausage rolls all with generous garnish. This was followed by scones with jam and cream, cream and fruit topped meringue, sherry trifle, victoria sponge, fruit cake and coffee and walnut cake. plus endless pots of tea. There was so much we were unable to finish, so it was boxed up to take home. Although it was very busy, the staff were calm and very friendly. Definitely worth the visit. Thank you.

We just happened notice the sign on the side of the road/lane and stopped by on our motorbikes for a rest and ordered a pit of tea for two along with warmed welsh cakes and coffee almond cake. Very traditional tea service on a tray pot of tea, jug of milk, sugar cubes in bowl along with a jug of hot water (we had 2 cups of tea each with the additional hot water) all brought to our table with a smile and the cakes were delightfully delicious. The staff were super friendly and informed us that they're only open from Wednesday to Sunday for a traditional Sunday roast dinner with bookings being advisable. Our pot of tea and cakes cost us £7.50 which is why we call in again. The Red Castle tea room also cook hot food on the spot as three hungry men ordered cooked breakfasts as we placed our order. It's a really delightful peaceful country side establishment with plenty of parking space for cars and motorbikes in separate areas. Overall it is a gem of a place and a gem to just happen upon like a secret tea room in the middle of the countryside. Also they've been open for 10 years.. Amazing!! 😁 We left happy as Larry and continued on our way to Hereford.

After seeing the reviews we were looking forward to our lunch here. It was okay but not as good as other reviews suggested. We had 3 filter coffees that were Luke warm felt like they had been on the stove for a while. The lady did make us some fresh ones after we drunk them which were much hotter. 3 of us had lasagne and chips and other had a cheese and onion sandwich. The lasagne was lovely and home made but chips were very soggy and greasy. Not an amazing selection of cakes they didnt look appealing. One of us had the fruit cake which he said was okay. Service was very good staff friendly. Felt it could have been a bit cleaner our outside table had crumbs on it, we actually moved inside due to wasps. The menus which were laminated paper looked a bit tatty. £36 for 3 hot meals and sandwich, coffee'a and 1 slice of cake, couldn't grumble at price but wouldn't rush back unfortunately. Coffee much better in Cotswolds and Devon which is where we Live.

Really don't get it. We walked here specifically due to the good reviews. View wasnt anything special vs the Offas Dyke path. Owner has an annoying yappy dog they kept letting annoy our perfectly behaved one who was lying down in the corner. Staff were three literal kids, one didn't look old enough to be working legally. Weak cappuccino that was actually a latte, given a massive tablespoon when we asked for something to stir sugar in. My sausage baguette was literally 2 richmonds freezer sausages that I watched one teenager get out with her bare hands on a par baked baguette that they didnt even finish baking! Massive salad out of a packet, given without dressing or knives and forks.. the kids were nice enough but clearly haven't actually ever eaten out on their own to know what people will expect. Cakes were fine, nothing special - fudge cake was dry and I had nutella pie which was literally nutella poured onto a pre bought pie base. Massively overpriced - two coffees, baguettes and cakes came to over £30! Which I wouldn't mind paying if it was more than just edible. Such a shame when they could be using local ingredients. I wasn't expecting Michelin star and like to support family run places when I visit new places but prepare to be disappointed if you like to go to more than a greasy spoon once in a while - even Wetherspoon's is better! I rarely leave reviews but wish I'd seen something like this before choosing to go out of my way.

Visited red castle tea rooms on a Sunday lunchtime. Even though we never booked in advance they managed to give us a table for two. Everyone appeared to be eating a Sunday roast and they looked amazing. We had a bacon and brie panini. Full of flavour, we loved it. Good home style cooking with a limited choice of mains (roast beef or chicken today, but does vary week to week) A varied choice of dessert is available. Food is excellent, is very well priced and quantity on the plate is good. I recommend it if you are passing by, but make sure you book a table for Sunday Lunch to avoid disappointment. Nice pub on the High St (Monnow Street), with pleasant beer garden. Live music venue with a popular Open Mic event monthly and occasional bands performing. A hidden gem, as you could easily walk by the small, discrete frontage, without realising it was there!
1894 Opinions
The venue itself is lovely, offering outstanding views of the river and a warm, welcoming atmosphere upon entry. The staff are friendly and attentive, with plenty of smiles, which adds to the overall experience. Unfortunately, the food falls short of expectations and feels overpriced for the quality provided. While I’m happy to pay more for good food, I expect it to deliver on flavor and value. The seafood pizza, which I’ve tried twice (hoping for improvement), was bland and rubbery, far from the standard I’ve enjoyed in other Italian restaurants or in Italy itself. My wife’s lamb shank was similarly underwhelming, lacking flavor. Desserts were another letdown—particularly the tiramisu, which was heavy on cream and light on the coffee-soaked biscuits, making it a far cry from the authentic Italian version. While the meatballs were enjoyable, the sauce was again bland, and the portion was unbalanced, with too much dry pasta and too few meatballs. Overall, while the venue is charming, the food lacks the freshness and vibrancy you’d expect from Italian cuisine. It’s a disappointing contrast to the beautiful setting.
