Spectacular setting floor to ceiling windows overlooking acres of vineyardsJust outside the medieval charming town of Alfriston it is a long drive to Tasting Room - the kind of entry one is used to in the great vineyard restaurants of Adelaide Hills Margaret River in Australia and Franschoek and Stellenbosch in South AfricaWe did feel we were transported to these countries but such good news for UK as there is little in the way of this in Bordeaux To cap it off the food was eclectic and creative - the gazpacho was topped with iberico ham and floating chorizo croquettes - an acknowledgement to this real Spanish dish. The courgette floor as a main was interesting stuffed with buffalo cheese and other accompaniments such a violet artichoke. The three course menu at £37 good value As there are a limited number of tables it is necessary to book well in advance We will nee backThe chef gained Michelin star at his previous restaurant so he comes here with a reputationTo cap it off the sparkling wines are exceptional - elegant and lingering taste

Rathfinny Wine Estate looks impressive from the 1st moment you enter with the sweeping entrance drive up to the largest wine estate I have seen so far in England. The tasting rooms is very attractive inside, the floor to ceiling glass takes full advantage of the stunning views over the vineyards towards the South Downs. The all male serving team were impressive and had been well trained.Sadly the food was disappointing. My 3 courses were all colourless (shades of beige to brown), and had an almost complete absence of our 5 a day. I was surprised at the lack of fresh local seasonal fruit and vegetables, given their ready availability in July.So despite the beauty of the place, it would not be a repeat for us unless they radically change their menus.

I originally planned this visit before the pandemic on a friend's report that he had found it excellent. Time, and perhaps staff, have passed but at least we made it, finally. The first thing to say is that the food was, indeed, excellent: creative, delicious. The price, too, was by no means exorbitant for such quality. But...We arrived to find nobody at Reception; no attempt to Covid register us; no welcome. Indeed we were left standing in the restaurant, ignored by staff for far too long. When eventually seated, we were offered water but there was no offer or suggestion of an aperitif - in a vineyard tasting room! Eventually we were served, including by a waiter whose mask was not over his nose. Service was lax, occasionally slow, too. Overall, it was a pleasant experience but should have been so much better if the food was not to be let down.

What a wonderful experience on a warm early summer evening. We started with drinks and canapes on the terrace overlooking the vineyard, all served extremely professionally by the excellent waiting staff.Onto the tasting menu, the food was superb with the staff describing each course in detail. Nothing was too much trouble even when one of our party advised that she had a seafood allergy, adjustments were made without a murmur. The food, wine, service and ambience was top class throughout and you will not find anywhere as good for miles around.

The rich rolling Sussex scenery greets you as you walk into the tasting room which sets the scene for your gourmet meal. The four of us were at the Dining Room for dinner and felt that we had a banquet of tastes, but did not feel bloated after our 7 course meal. The balance of flavours and the delicate preparation made for a visual feast which was complimented by Rathfinny’s fine wines. In particular, we were impressed how the restaurant embraced the dietary requirements of two of my guests (vegan and no alcohol) without fuss, but more importantly enabled both of them to equally share the culinary excellence. If you want to have a special evening overlooking the vineyard with superlative food, Rathfinny Tasting Room is the place to go.

My friends booked a tour as we love sparkling wine so today we were excited to tour Rathfinny. We were greeted in the shop where there was hand sanitiser for covid. We had a tour with 2 other people and the guide. We were shown around the vineyard and vines, very informative about the owners, how the business was started, how many acres they have, what grapes they grow, what percentage of each grape goes into each wine. Full tour of presses, tanks, bottling etc. Then on to the tasting of 4 wines still and sparkling, socially distant from other people in group. Loved the wines. Bought a few bottles in the shop, would have like just a token discount for being on the tour. We then went to the flint cottages for a lunch, my friends had oysters which they said were one of the nicest they had had, I had haddock and chips which were delicious, no grease and crispy batter. All followed by another walk around the vines. Great day

A very special Bank Holiday Monday lunchtime arranged for 3 friends. we were originally booked to come the day the weather broke from high high heat to raynes across the lunch time when we would have been there and it was such a simple process to arrange with Abby on the desk and phones that day to move to the bank holiday Monday slot that had been set aside for postponement due to weather. So efficiently handled. The drive in along the valley to the Tasting Room was, as ever on a sunny day ... SPECTACULAR.Our pre-booked Picnic and bottles of water and a Rosé Sparking Rathfinny wine were all efficiently delivered to the table and shade umbrella that were ready, set up for us, close to rows of Pinot Gris vines. Plenty of care and social distancing evident. We were lucky, even with the delay from our original booking due to the weather, that we were on the last day to use the Government's Eat Out to Help Out scheme. The food was indeed all excellent and ideal for a picnic. Three courses. The Trout for main with salad was delicious, and especially the accompaniment of chargrilled veggie on a bed of wild rice ~ and the sponge cup cake with cream and fresh strawberries for pudding equally so.The sparkling wine was lovely, as ever.

We turned up last Friday for lunch on the spur of the moment. The lovely lady behind the counter sadly told us there were no more lunch spaces. However, if we wanted to , we could east outside. The weather was quite blowy but as the lady was so nice we decided to go for it. So when we walked back to purchase our lunch to eat outside we were then greeted by a very unhelpful young guy. Who abruptly said, well you can eat outside but if you sit on the benches then you have have to move if people have booked lunch. Or if the people then who booked lunch, then decided to eat outside. So we then said, well what do you think we are eating, isn't it lunch ???? So this went on back and forth for ages until we said, don't worry we have lost interested. We went to the George Pub and had a wonderful lunch. It's clear this guy has zero customer service and should be kept away from the public !

We chose the hottest day of the year ( by default) but what a lovely experience. We went for the seafood menu but struck lucky and got a table on the balcony over looking the vines. Would be 5 stars but the service needs a bit of tweaking. Had to ask for the sauces that should have come with the menu. Very under staffed but all working far harder than they should in 33 degrees of heat. Overall I would thoroughly recommend weather permitting.

What a special place that every local should visit. The drive up with the scenery was spectacular. We prebooked the picnic and the table set up showed off the scenery and definitely adhered to the 2m apart with space to walk and sit on a rug to admire the view. We were lucky to use the the government eat out scheme. The food was excellent and the trout and pudding was definitely michelin standard. The wine was also lovely shame we couldn't sample all the different ones or drink to much as we were driving. Tip for locals leave the car and get a taxi

Whilst we couldn’t find a nice spot becuase of the overcast weather; we thoroughly enjoyed the view over the vineyard from the restaurant.

What a fantastic place for a meal. We visited to celebrate my daughters 25th and my impending 60th birthdays for lunch. Due to the roadworks and the flooding we had to go down one side of the Cookmere Valley and up the other to get the estate. The views on the way are truly gorgeous and add to the anticipation.Once you turn into the estate you enter a completely different landscape and you are transported to somewhere really special, the views across the vines to the sea are breathtaking. The restaurant itself has one side glass which looks over the vines and adds the feeling of elsewhere. The staff are very attentive and the pace of the service is perfect for a special occasion, not rushed and not slow, just right. The food is out of this world. The majority is locally sourced within Sussex and cooked to absolute perfection. We decided to have a bottle of the Blanc de Noirs 2015 to accompany the meal and I have to say it went perfectly with the food. The lunch menu is simple with 3 choices of starter, main course and dessert (for £37) and for that you get a find dinning but not pretentious meal.We had a fantastic time and are already looking for the next excuse to celebrate at the Tasting Rooms!!

We had high hopes for our first visit after friends’ recommendation but were rather underwhelmed. I was surprised to see the only additional ‘side’ was deep friend jersey potatoes with aioli. This at the tail end of October. Odd choice. Some dauphinoise potatoes would have been far more appropriate. The plated main course wasn’t very substantial so a few vegetables would have been very welcome. My neighbour’s tarte tatin was much better than the one we had here - with tonka bean ice cream. All rather pretentious.Very charming and attentive service. All in all needs to improve before i go again.

We enjoyed our visit to the tasting rooms at this spectacular estate. A couple of minor improvements would take this to 5* level, such as:-canapés or pre starters would have been a nice touch given the price of the tasting menu-wine poured at table, showing customers the bottle and talking through tasting notes would have improved the wine experience. This is a wine estate after all!

Lovely setting, delightful attentive staff, but sadly the tasting menu is too fussy for us. This is such a shame, as we were looking forward to it being somewhere we might come regularly as it’s quite local. There is no menu choice. It is a tasting menu only. This is not made clear on the website. We are not big lovers of fruits in savoury food and had to push aside or force down gooseberries/grapes/figs with savoury courses. It was a shame because for example the tiny red mullet was utterly delicious, sweet and moist and perfectly cooked. Unfortunately it was sitting on a sea of chopped up gooseberries and ?green tomatoes. However if you like these fruits and you like your food to be very intricate with many different flavours then you may really enjoy this. The tuna tartare was excellent. Puddings were very sweet. The peaches in a peach flavoured soup tasted just like canned peaches used to taste. I couldn’t eat mine. Treacle tart was served with an apple foam which was nice but there was nothing to relieve the sweetness, such as a bit of lemon sorbet. Looking at previous menus, I think we may have been unlucky and picked a weekend when the menu wasn’t a great one for us, due to the addition of several fruits which I’m not keen on.Service was wonderful. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and very keen to help. Sometimes though you just long for a bit of excellently cooked fish/meat, some sauté potatoes and one simply cooked vegetable.

We had seen the generally high rating reviews and decided to go with friends. The short lead in time before our visit meant that we had to take a reservation for very early in the evening (just after 6pm).That was fine as we were only too pleased to get a table in what is smart room with a lovely setting, particularly on a warm summer evening. We were very pleasantly welcomed and seated at a sunny table to view the lovely sunset.

We went here for a mid-week lunch to celebrate our anniversary on a scorching hot September day. The drive through the estate/vineyard was jaw-droppingly beautiful, with views of the sea, fields of sunflowers and, of course, the vines, all just a month away from harvest. The restaurant didn't disappoint. A charming, welcoming, highly professional team served up a great four course lunch of locally sourced produce, including the estate's excellent wines and sparkling wines. The restaurant overlooked the vineyard and we concluded our meal with cheese and coffee in the sunshine out on the terrace. Our only regret was not doing a tour of the vineyard before we ate.

There was a vegetarian option but not a vegan. However, they will take note of any dietary requirements at the time of booking. A deposit is required to book if you are eating in the restaurant. Went here for a meal with my husband last night. The views and landscaping on the long drive through the vineyard up to the flint barn are stunning and we had a warm welcome on our arrival and started off with a glass of Rathfinny bubbly which rivalled any champagne I’ve had. We opted for the wine flight which matches wine to each course (three appetisers, a choice of two mains , two desserts) all the food was delicious and beautifully presented and the wine matched perfectly. Waiting staff were very friendly, professional and knowledgeable about the menu and wines. At last we have found a top quality restaurant in a beautiful setting right on our doorstep. Gazing out across the valley thru the large glass wall give a sense that you could be in France. It is a fantastic vista, really taking away the stresses and strains of everyday life. The interior is sleek and modern, an interesting contrast to the rolling hills of the estate. The menu is simple but well delivered – its good value too. I wouldn’t say the food was exceptional but the overall experience is far more than just food. At this embryonic stage of the commercial wine making here there is only a small selection to try – but plenty. The still white outperformed the fizz in my opinion and was right at the top of the English still wines I’ve tried. The wine list allows for you to take a glass of most offerings thus encouraging you to try a selection and to pair with the food – this works very well. The Californian Riesling is very good, only marginally better than the Merlot also from CA. Service upon arrival was very poor, we sat for 15 minutes without a drinks list or an ability to place a drinks order. The venue wasn’t busy but any thoughts of a tasting flight at the ‘bar’ was soon extinguished with no organised process to do this, no order to the chaos. Once we’d navigated a first engagement the service was good. I would certainly return to show more people the views of the estate, without sunshine however I fear the magnifico would be marred.

If you like a long menu this is a venue to avoid. There is a simple, set price menu with 3 choices for each course. But what is offered is of prime ingredients, made well and presented with flair. There are, simply, two breads, but both sourdough and focaccia are light yet flavoursome. One of us enjoyed the roast hogget, too seldom seen on the menu, and the other john dory for the main course. The range of wines is wide and there is a fair choice of by-the-glass for those who drive to this peaceful Downland spot set amidst a newly planted vineyard on land bought from the National Trust. The views are fine. The service is discrete.

Having lost Moonrakers and The Hungry Monk over recent years, it's been hard to find Michelin-level food in this part of East Sussex. Until now. Two friends and I had the prix fixe lunch here yesterday and we were all delighted with the food, wine and the service. Everything about the experience was excellent. Scrumptious warm homemade breads with french radishes and butter on arrival. My velvety velouté with goat curd followed by halibut with white beans were delicious, perfectly balanced and well portioned. My friends raved over their risotto and lamb dishes too. Hard to choose a wine from the extensive list but my glass of Sancerre was wonderful. Friendly, professional service was perfectly judged. As others have said, the tables are well spaced and all look out through the high windows on the vineyards. We'll definitely be returning with other friends - I can see Rathfinny will become the go-to restaurant for special occasions - and perhaps even just the odd treat. We had a wonderful lunch at the Rathfinny Wine Estate Tasting Room. The staff were extremely charming and helpful. The food was absolutely delicious and the views were stunning. We were particularly lucky that the vineyards were bathed in Autumn sunlight. Each course was beautifully presented, with delicate flavours and some interesting local ingredients. The highlight of the meal was the pudding. We all chose the same: damsons, bee pollen meringue, wild honey, skyr yoghurt and honeycomb. Heaven on a plate! I will definitely go back!

My daughter and I had a wonderful three course lunch here accompanied by the rose and white sparkling wines produced on the estate. The dining room is charming and even in late September we were able to have coffee on the balcony with lovely views of the South Downs. Afterwards we took a walk on the marked trail around part of the vineyard. Rathfinny is a perfect venue for a memorable meal served by charming staff.

From the minute you enter the room you are well looked after by the excellent friendly and efficient staff. The choice of tasting menus gives something for everyone and when booking you can specify any food intolerances or dislikes. The stunning views and superb wine contribute to one of the best meals and nights out ever. Outstanding.

Will definitely be coming back to Rathfinny Wine Estate/Tasting Room. Every single course of the tasting menu was amazing, the staff are lovely and know their stuff. The views were beautiful, shame it wasn’t a sunny day but don’t let that put you off. Couldn’t fault a thing :)

we visited to try the new restaurant and all had the fish tasting menu which was very good. It wasn't excellent as it slightly missed the mark but will go back again. The staff were attentive and the vineyards wines were very good - best English wine Ive tried.

We were taken here for dinner as a Golden Wedding Anniversary present. It is a great location with views over the downs. The staff are pleasant and very knowledgeable and explain all the food in detail. The menu has a choice of 3 "taster" meals and we chose the Meat one. The food was very different but everything was very pleasant and tasty and although the courses are small, we felt that we had had a good meal by the end. The wine made at the estate was also very good. We had an excellent time and we even received a card from the staff congratulating us on our anniversary.

This was unexpected. We had both visited many vineyards all over the globe....more recently many in England. What we found here was more remiscient of the bijoux Californian and Australian wineries than the UK. Not much to taste because they focus on just 3 products at the moment. But what they make is delicious. A gentle biscuity Blanc de blancs fizz in a champagne style and a Pinot mix white which was fresh and citrus. We also had a superb 3 course lunch which lived up to the 'fine dining' description. The head chef was away but the meal was excellent. I would have liked the pork belly fat to be a bit more rendered but otherwise we enjoyed all of the dishes. The choice is 3 of 3 and they are very good at checking for allergies or dietary needs. Service was very attentive. Almost too so. Staff were informative and relaxed. The building is spectacular with huge glass sliding doors looking onto the vineyard. Contemporary flint bar inspired with a modern feel. Long sweeping drive up there which was made perfect by a beautiful hare who raced across the fields beside us. Now we know why they have a hare on the white label.

We have just returned from a wonderful afternoon wine tasting followed by an evening meal at the tasting rooms. Beautiful setting, fantastic wine and absolutely outstanding food. The staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about the wine and the estate which was very interesting. As we had planned to sample the wine and the very fine gin, we booked a room at the flint barn which proved to be a good decision, very clean, simple but has everything that we needed. Look forward returning again.

We called in on the off chance of some wine tasting, they're very welcoming and informative. The surroundings are beautiful, we bought some wine and enjoyed a drink on the terrace.

We only went for the wine tasting, the purchase of some and a visit to end the day out in Sussex. Initially we went to their premises in the village but on discovering that they had relocated recently traveled to the vineyard itself which was much better and its location hidden away in the Downs was a lovely setting

Four of us had a fantastic lunch here on a beautiful sunny day, overlooking the vineyard. The food was superb - interesting flavours and beautiful presentation. The serving staff were all very friendly, efficient and knew a lot about how the dishes were put together. They were also knowledgeable about the wine. I liked how people were coming in for tastings at the bar as well as full service sit-down meals. Book early - it's a small restaurant with limited tables. But on a nice day you can sit on the veranda, sip wine and order bar snacks.

Arrived unfortunately on a windy wet day, so no tour or outside explore was possible nor desirable. And that didn't spoil the visit!

Fantastic food served in a relaxed atmosphere with stunning views across the vineyard. The wines we tried were so good we came away with a bottle. The service was spot on. The menu changes frequently as the chef prepares what is locally available. The three course meal at £35 is the best value for money.

We only popped in for some tasting and didn't stop to eat but had a great time. Turned up and they were only too happy to accommodate us and give us all the information about the place and the wines. The views are amazing too. We did end up buying afew too and would definitely go back.

We had a very relaxing evening at the Tasting Room, Rathfinny Wine Estate. We were a party of six adults, three chose from the sea menu two from the Garden menu I chose from the Land. Each of the courses was fresh and a taste feast for the mouth. The wine list holds a selection from Rathfinny, as you would expect and numerous Red, White and Rosé wines. I’d recommend using the services of a local taxi firm so you can enjoy without the worry. The set menus are five of courses, each a taste sensation for the individual to enjoy. We had a memorial July birthday parties celebration meal. I would recommend that you book from the website before going.

Off the beaten track nestled amidst the Sussex downs. The dining room overlooks the vines and the Sussex downs, great on the sunny day it was.

We first had a tour around the winery which was extremely interesting and Katy who took us was very knowledgeable and happy to answer all our questions. Wine was excellent too although the sparkling has only just this month become available. The restaurant has wonderful views over the acres of vines and provides a beautiful setting for the superb and imaginative food. Service was good with very knowledgeable waiters and overall a great experience which I would thoroughly recommend.

WOW - we booked in for a meal, and was not expecting what we got. We ordered the "2 steaks and a bottle of wine for £35". It was the most delicious steak meal either of us has ever had - cooked perfectly, and the peppercorn sauce and extras on the plate absolutely delicious. We followed with a sticky toffee pudding - BEST EVER. So obviously home made. The service was excellent and friendly. We are so disappointed that we are only in the area for a week. Thank you White Hart - we haven't stopped raving about you since - much to the annoyance of our family and friends :). See you again.
