Rajgate in Central Bedfordshire

So disappointed.. after using this restaurant for over 25 yrs .. eat in And take out .. I am sad to say we won’t be using again. Has it changed hands? We had a delivery tonight .. it was 15 mins later than the maximum stated time despite the fact that we are a 5 min walk away. We had tandoori mixed grill and tandoori king prawn. The portions weren’t great not like they used to be. The salad between 2 dishes was a couple of slices of ice berg lettuce- no cucumber or tomato and 1 tiny piece of onion. The garlic naan as insipid… dry and might as well have been plain . With 3 other Indians in Ampthill why would I choose this one again . I’m sad as it was always the best .

A family member gave us their glowing recommendation for this restaurant and sadly those are the last positive words I will use in this review . We had some friends over for the evening , like us they enjoy a good curry and instead of us using a regular, based on the recommendation we decided to try Rajgate and this really was easily one of the worst decisions we feel we have ever made in terms of a takeaway when deciding to give this establishment our custom. After we viewed their website and order was placed via telephone , based on their 25% off for collection when the price came back we asked them to double check as we have a fairly decent understanding of math and they were clearly trying to overcharge us . We were then told the online menu was out of date and the prices had been updated. We got the price down to more or less what it should have been and this was was a Saturday evening agreed generous collection time and was assured it would be ready . On arrival the customer service deteriorated further , the restaurant was empty , cold and the staff were quick enough to take our money , had insisted on cash only . After paying for the food I sat there with another customer , he asked them when they would be replacing their credit / debit card machine as he had been told this some months back . The staff members did not seem comfortable in their own skins and mumbled something about being under new management but did not state when this started . Another customer came in and asked about purchasing gift vouchers . She was rather abruptly informed these were not available. She enquired why not and again the under new management excuse was trotted out . The staff member then asked her when she last visited the restaurant, she stated late 2021 and had no problem back then. The staff member mumbled something else and she then left and by this time the other customer and I started discussing how long the orders were taking . About 6 minutes later his finally arrived and the staff members walked to the back of the restaurant. I got their attention and asked for an update about my order given that we had placed it at 6pm and it was now 7.10pm . They mumbled again and then told me it was on its way , and I didn’t get it until 7.20pm ! Before leaving I stated they needed to update their website , improve on the service times and their general customer service and hopefully the new management was addressing these issues . On getting the meal home one of the dishes , a so called chicken Balti was swimming in grease and was not at all nice . If their aim to was to ensure we did not use them again or pass on a recommendation , congratulations, for that we will award ★★ ★ ★ ★.

A party of 6 on a Saturday night early evening. Service was very slow and the whole place was freezing cold, we were the only people sat down in the whole restaurant, we waited ages just to get a drink to the point we had to track down the waiter!! We ordered at 6.25 again having to ask the waiter to order when he had a free minute, food came out an hour later and half of it was wrong and loads of stuff missing even when the waiter read the order back to us before it was placed , some of us were sat there with no food when others had finished theirs, very poor cant say we will be rushing back anytime soon.

Dismal experience! Was greeted by a waiter who looked as if he didn't want to be there. Waited nearly an hour for our food (restaurant was empty). Food was not hot, which was good because the restaurant must of been at least 30 degrees, and was very bland. Had much better ready meals from the Waitrose opposite.

Went for a curry after work Wednesday evening and was greeted by the most miserable, rude waiter I have ever come across. Right from the start it was made clear I was an inconvenience to be there. When we was finally seated we waited 25 minutes to be asked what we wanted. My starter was good but the main course was luke warm at best and the furthest thing from a chicken tikka madras I have had. I would not recommend this restaurant to any locals, maybe this is why is was the only place that wasn’t busy that evening. Customers like to be greeted and feel like you want them to spend their money and eat at your restaurant. You may need to consider who you stick at the front of your restaurant.

Had many takeaways over the years, the Korma dishes and Lamb Biryani were lovely. Prices good too. the Rajgate is located right at the heart of Ampthill.

Extremely poor service. We had to ask twice to have our order taken and then it was over an hour until we received our starters. During this time over10 takeaways were given out and no food delivered to tables. They prioritised takeaways. We had to ask twice when our food would come and it was only after we said we were going to leave that they took any notice of us. It then arrived in a few minutes. There were other groups that only got food after threatening leave as well.

My first time here, my partner is a regular but had a great time, nothing wildly spectacular but good solid food with fast and efficient service. great value too, left a £8 tip as i couldn't believe the value. I'll be back

Great place, great food, great friendly service. Chef needs to go crabbing more however, :) , we have never had a bad meal and visit on a regular basis. Table for two in the corner, no candle :)

Rajgate is my fave tandoori in Ampthill, great tasting food, amazing service from friendly staff. Always my first choice.

As we are pensioners we don't visit there very often but sometimes have a takeaway. Once on our visit I had forgotten my reading glasses so suggested to my partner we would just have our usual, but within a minute a pair of reading glasses appeared on our table! Now that is service. Our meal was excellent as usual. Tonight it is takeaway so looking forward to it, but will be glad to be able to go out again.

Myself and hubby have been comin here for 15 years. The same manager and 1 or 2 staff the same. They are lovely people here and give great service The food is great and we still got a discount because we collected our food. Social distance was followed as the food was on a table near the door. The waiter stood behind the till and greeted his customers.

Most Indian food is rather greasy. This was full of flavour, not over loaded with oil. Dishes were distinct rather than blending into one another. Good choice for vegetarians.

I've been to this restaurant many times since moving to Ampthill 3 years ago and it never fails to please. Good food, friendly staff nice surroundings, great location. I use the Rajgate for Takeaway or eat in and it hasn't disappointed yet. Highly recommended.
