Raj Tandoori Restaurant in Thurrock

Having just moved into the area, we were keen to sample the local food outlets, and I have to say, I was totally impressed with this restaurant. We did not dine in, but ordered a take away, at 9:55 pm on a Tuesday evening. The guy taking the order was extremely helpful and polite and when I asked how long should i wait to come and collect he informed me delivery was not problem. And sure enough, 10:30 pm our Food arrived. I stress this was 10:30 pm on a Tuesday evening so we were very impressed with this service. The food when it arrived was as good as the service and was very, very tasty. I ordered Chicken Shashlik, my wife Chicken biryani with Aloo Gobi and peshwari naan as extras. Nicely prepared and packaged and still piping hot. We were really impressed with this food and look forward to the opportunity to dine in in the very near future. Well done the Taj

The place don’t send out deliveries. When you go to collect the staff are rude. order from sizzling around the corner instead far better

We haven’t been in this place for such a long time and I’m gutted. The service is exceptional so polite and welcoming the food was delicious me and my husband wanted a meal for our anniversary and I was very pleased we picked to come here 5/5 on a all round experience would highly recommend this place.

Cold bland food and rude staff. I know it used to be a public toilet doesn’t seem like much has changed. Hour and a half wait for cold food is not acceptable

Very disappointed wasted £30. Naan bread was literally like cardboard, my lamb dish was smothered in oil and the meat was fatty, one of my main dishes came as a small portion & was incorrect & over all the food didn’t taste nice at all.

In the past, have eaten within this restaurant, and in truth better than the toilet it used to be (true). Placed a delivery order, the first with them for a long time, the food never arrived. It happens, but their horrendous attitude with handling the complaint means that I will never order or sit in with them again. They blamed Deliveroo and put the phone down saying there was nothing they can do. Well, in their praise, Deliveroo were not impressed at all, and a formal complaint has been lodged. My mistake was not using the Rice Box nearby, who I cannot fault a bit and have an entirely different attitude, Lesson learned. Give the Raj a miss, there are so many other places where customers are not taken for granted.

Used this restaurant loads but since they have been taking orders from just eat it's got awful we phone the restaurant direct both times we have waited over 2hrs . Tonight we ordered at 6.20 it came at 8.30. we live down the road. It was all cold the nann bread was raw ... Will not get from here again..they should take care of the customers they had that used them all the time before just eat got involved. They take on to much work an it shows . Disappointed

Curry was full of oil over my plate, naan bread was charcoal and not edible and to top it off the food was 45 mins late! The manager said he would sort us out on the next order! Haha you must be joking

Were only ones in the restaurant, decor not changed in absolutely years, could do with a revamp (or a good dusting) - food ok, nothing special

This lovely little Indian restaurant tucked away in south Ockendon right on the back of Liddles the food was amazing always hot the waiters are very friendly have lots of specials on the menu and is always happy to make something that is not on the menu overall very pleasant this little restaurant used to be public toilets Over 30 yrs ago this little restaurant is a must please go to visit and experience the lovely atmosphere the friendliness and just feel so relaxed and enjoying excellent Indian food with good quality and excellent value

Ordered a takeaway on a Saturday night tikka masala and lamb biryani the naan was burnt and soggy and chicken was dry the lamb in the biryani was chewy and didn’t seem as if it was cooked properly, I rang to complain and the man hung up the phone on me and said if you don’t like it don’t come back!!! And said how have we survived for 30 years with poor food, I asked for my money back and he said he doesn’t give people their money back I asked how do you keep satisfied he said if you don’t like it don’t come back!!! That’s customer service for you I asked to speak to manager and he said he was the manager!!! Please don’t eat here Kerry

My chicken was black inside !! Got over charged and when I told them they did not listen and I ended up paying a lot more than what I should have! They was RUDE aswell!

Really quaint little Indian restaurant. Pretty good food & nice atmosphere. Nice staff. Very quirky as many years ago this was a public convenience, fondly know locally as ‘the toilets’.

Food cooked fresh and very tasty. Range of choices on menu. Very friendly staff offering good service. Good takeaway/home delivery too.

Excellent food the staff are very friendly and as regulars we get made very welcome Raul and Mo Will do their up most to provide a varied meal even if it's not on the menu Their specials really are special Fantastic

The owners have been there for 26 years and the food tells you why. Tasty, fresh and well presented. Like curry like I do then this is the place to go.

We have been coming to the Rai on a weekly basis for years. Having travelled the country visited 100's of different Indian restaurants we have found the Rai to be the best.

Excellent service and excellent food. I don't have many take aways and this is only the 2nd time I've had one from there after living in south ockendon for 15 years but it's the only ace I go to. Tonight when I went, whilst waiting for my food they gave me a complimentary poppadom.

Many years ago, when I was a lad this was the local public toilet. Hence the affectionate nick name Vinda-Loo.Don't let this put you off - the restaurant is always clean and tidy, the staff extremely friendly and the food of good quality.They are always happy to let you tamper with the menu - for example, I like my vegetable curry served with the biryani at madras strength and my wife likes extra garlic.Don't take my my word for it - check it out for yourself

The Raj is a small, cosy, Indian restaurant. Curiously the buildingwas many years ago a public toilet. But no traces of that any more.The food is nice and "adjustments" are possible (like more garlic)Prices are very reasonable. A recommendable nice place for a spontaneous "Lets go for an Indian"

Lovely local restaurant, I buy from here often and have done for over 20 years . Never had better and the staff are really nice. X

Have eaten in the restaurant since it opened in the 1990's. Now living in Wales but always go here when in the area. Excellent service from very friendly staff ( most of whom have been there for ever). All food is cooked to order so it can take some time.Have introduced many people over the years. The food is not typical indian takeaway style but does have some interesting variations. They are always willing to give recommendations to suit your palette. I love there biryani dishes especially. They also do take away and local delivery.

Have lived in Grays for 10 years and always used the more local indian restaurants. Not any more. The food at the Raj is unique and delicious with flavours quite distinct from traditional offerings. Nothing is too much trouble for the excellent staff and the Head Chef is always ready with suggestions for different dishes. You must try this place.

After much deliberation, we opted for an Indian takeaway rather than cook Saturday night. I ordered by phone and collected the order. When I began to dish the meal up, I was concerned at the lack of colour for my butter chicken. It was like a very pale milky custard, it did not look right. The Bombay potatoes were not good. They looked like ordinary new potations, cut in half in a gravy, nothing like I expected them to be.It was a real shame, as the staff are very friendly and helpful, but unfortunately we will not be using them again. (Both had indigestion in the early hours too!)

I like this place and have eaten there several times. The restaurant is tiny! & only has a few tables. The food is delicious & the price is fantastic!
