Raj Mahal in Broxbourne

Have been eating here for a long time. Really great food. From speaking to staff, I know their food is freshly prepared daily. None of that pre-prepared stuff, so there might be a slightly longer wait but definitely worth it in the end. Would highly recommend the Dhansak or the Nawabi Balti. Very traditional restaurant, with a modern look. No gimmicks here, just good food.

Ordered a takeaway from here. Definitely the best Indian Ive had so far. Will be returning. The tikka was delicious and poppadoms lovely and fresh

We visited the Raj Mahal on Monday 31st and I was immediately disappointed at the number of active tables in the restaurant at this time of social distancing and precautions etc. There were literally a few inches between tables. The staff wore masks, some under their nose though not sure how that will help... The food was nice and service was good but I wouldn't be keen to return while they aren't observing best practice. Yes we should have walked out but we'd been looking forward to celebrating my new job at this restaurant.

I use The Raj Mahal regularly for take away and eating in. Last night I went for a family meal and not only was the service not great with the waiter near on throwing the cutlery on to the table, the food left a lot to be desired too. The starters were acceptable although portion size has diminished drastically. Main courses were pretty tasteless, the Sheek kebab had a strange taste which was not usual and not enjoyable. The Chicken in all dishes was chewy, I left a fair bit of mine as it also appeared to be pink, possibly down to food colouring but I feel that it was undercooked. All of us have suffered with bad stomachs this morning. Won't be using anymore!

This restaurant is now doing takeaways only. Previous two visits food was fine last night terrible binned most of it. Burnt chicken fat and gristle hardly any filling in the nan breads and just about warm. These people think you don’t notice when the food is not to standard unfortunately for them forty years experience means I know good from bad. They all do it good for a while then cut corners. They don’t deserve regular customers. I will spend my money elsewhere next time.

The food is always of a high quality and we are never afraid to try new things off the menu. We visit just as a couple, or to bring the children and we bring our house guests here as a treat too.

Yet again, the 30 mile round trip was well worthwhile.. really great food.. good beer, great service.. This restaurant really is our favourite.. from takeaways to celebration meals I can’t recommend it enough.. we are currently booking our return trip!

I come here quite a bit but I usually have take away and this time we sat in side , we went around six on a Monday so wasn’t busy at all , the food was all very good , but the tandoori mixed grill was removed from the sizzling plate ? Never have I had it served like that before and the older man that worked here was constantly hovering over our table and moving the stuff at the end of our table , it made us feel really uncomfortable , when it came to paying the bill we paid and he just assumed we didn’t want our change and kept it without asking before doing so , if they would have asked I would have have said keep it but at least ask before assuming so

Great fresh food and good friendly service , went here late at night revived very friendly good service and very fresh food mixture of dishes they were all well presented and good portions and freshly cooked overall a lovely meal thank you to the staff

We have been here regularly for last 20 years but unfortunately over last few years with changes of chefs etc the standard of food has really gone downhill. The dhansak tasted burnt and the tikka masala chicken tasted rubbery (no pun!)Such a shame as it had built up a reputation as the best in Hoddesdon but now below average. I hope they gets better chef in future as the meals aren’t cheap (or the drinks) so for the money would expect better than hit or miss meals. With such a lot of choice of Indian restaurants in the area, they need to up their game to be a contender in a tough market

Been coming here for 40 years and worse meal and service! Group of 11 at 7pm waiting 2hours to get food. I don’t eat meat so was horrified to see my prawns on the same serving dish as chicken ticker. It was cold and greasy. Samosas were raw and Bombay allo was greasy mash!The staff are really good but they accepted too many takeaway meals over diners. Sadly won’t return ☹️

was here beginning of january with my family ..we were 9 ,the food and service was excellent ,plenty to choose from menu and a nice touch with the free shot at the end

We use this restaurant quite a bit but every now and then it lets itself down. Ordered a takeaway arrived at the time specified and waited for half an hour. Got it back and found quite a few items that were wrong and the food was only just about warm. Two Dansacks that looked totally Different and tasted different. This morning three adults and two children running to the loo constantly. I am now informing the local health department to take a look at this restaurant as this has happened a few times both eating in and eating out. Will not be going there again. If you use it you will probably get a good meal but then the lottery is you will also get a bad one and pay for it.

Booked a takeaway 45 minutes prior to picking it up at the agreed time of 7.15pm. However the restaurant was very busy on the Saturday night both sit down and about 15 people waiting for their food. As I entered the staff asked my name and told me the price and how much to pay. I paid in good faith believing my food would be out soon. I have no problem if they were realistic with the time and if I knew it would be that long,I would have gone somewhere else. Many other people were waiting similar times. They did not even apologise or refund some of the cost.They probably don’t need my custom,however I will not be visiting that restaurant anymore as I have done on many occasions before

There are better in Hoddesdon found this restaurant a bit hit and miss. Food is sometimes totally Different to the last visit and has been lukewarm at best.

Had a lovely meal at this restaurant with my wife. The chicken tikka dhansak was fantastic, as were all the meals. Highly recommended. Service was great too

Food cooked to perfection and very tasty, no complaints with anything they serve. Recommend the dhansak, it's the best.

I love this restaurant. The food is always consistent and the service good. Very tasty and not oily. The only item they should improve on the menu is the quarter tandoori chicken starter. last time we visited was rather dry & overcooked but tasted delicious.

This is one of the best Indian restaurants I have ever been to. Great food and excellent value. They made the night a special event for both my friends and my birthday/retirement.

Had a very nice meal and experience within Raj Mahal. The menu was quite extensive so hard to choose but the waiters were friendly and happy to give suggestions. The food came out within 20-30 minutes but was well worth the wait. Would definitely visit again.

Our biryanis were both tepid and served on cold plates, elements were also missed, even after the waiters were informed.

Been here a few times and always find food good, albeit portions are slightly on the small size compared to other restaurants, staff are helpful and friendly, my only recommendation would be not to go here if you want to communicate with your associates, the noise levels are unbelievable, with the background music adding to the rabble it is a pleasure to get out of the place.

The best curries ever! Fab service and a great menu. We eat in or have take away and are never disappointed.

Nice cosy restaurant. Above average Bangladeshi food, won't be disappointed but won't be blown away either. Overall you can't go wrong to try it out.

Used to live fairly locally but never tried the Raj Mahal. We moved some 70 miles away but still have family close by. Last weekend our children were staying with my mother in law (we had a weekend away) and I cheekily proposed my wife...

Went on Saturday night without a reservation, but will book next time in case they can't fit us in. Lovely decor and buzzing atmosphere. Most importantly, the food was excellent. From an extensive, but well presented menu we chose prawn puri, sag paneer, masala mix and chicken shashlik - any of which I would have again (and again !). Can't wait to try other dishes.

First visit to this Current House despite having lived in the area for years. Excellent food quality combined with super service & very warm welcome from the host. The Tandoori Lamb was cooked to perfection and will definitely be back again. Very reasonable prices too and a complimentary liqueur topped if the evening for my guest & me.

A firm favourite among friends and family. The restaurant has won several industry awards over the years and deservedly so. The atmosphere is great - bustling but not overly noisy.The food is always awesome and never bland. The menu provides a great selection of curries, meat, chicken, fish and veg dishes. Each dish is fresh and as spicy or mild as you prefer. Mr. Ali and his team run a tight ship. Food and drinks orders are taken and dispatched quickly throughout your meal without you feeling rushed. Mr Ali and his team are very welcoming and love chatting to their customers and making sure everyone is enjoying their evening. The Raj is great for family meals, dates, bigger parties with friends or family.My favourite for curries in Hoddesdon!

We visited as a pre booked group of four. Extensive menu all appearing to offer good value. The quality of the food was excellent. I understand how the chef has won awards. The surroundings are also well appointed and clean. I will most certainly return.

Absolutely loved our meal! We've been a few times with family and friends and cannot fault the food, the atmosphere or the friendly staff. The staff are helpful (we hadn't all experienced Indian food before), friendly and professional. They are truly an asset along with wonderful food that we'd happily eat every day. I regularly use The Raj Mahal Restaurant in Hoddesdon when we fancy an Indian Take Away at home. The food is superb, always tasty, freshly cooked and good value for money. The staff are very hospitable, friendly and obliging. If you fancy eating out, I can also recommend this restaurant. It went through a full refurbishment approximately 3 or 4 years ago and is kitted out to a very high standard and quality. If you are ever in the Broxbourne/Hoddesdon area and feeling a bit peckish; pay The Raj a visit. I am sure that you won't be disappointed!!

Me and all of my friends and family absolutely love it here! We never go anywhere else for an Indian. Know the waiters and manager on first name basis as we've been coming here so many years.Would 1000% recommend everyone and anyone to come here to eat.

Arrived at the restaurant just after a large group of people. We were apprehensive as to what it would be like as it was very busy. We needn't have worried the service was good as was the food. The only feedback would be that there was a little to much salt in the sizzling butterfly prawns. Would definitely return to this restaurant again

This family run business has not lowered its standards in the many years we have been going. The restaurant expanded after a complete refurbishment a few years back, but lost none of the personal attention to detail or service expected from its customers. They always open the door with a big smile, which is becoming rare these days.

Loved the butter chicken and the garlic tikka. We regularly order takeaway from here but have enjoyed eating in as well. Always delicious!

Been going to the Raj Mahal since 1982 and it has always retained that special atmosphere , the service is absolutely spot on and needless to say that the curry is second to none , highly recommended !

I came to this restaurant Saturday with friends as have not been there for a few years. Unfortunately, the service was dreadful. We waited ages just to receive a drink. However, when main meal was finally bought out, one of my dishes was cold (which for my sin was chips as I do not eat rice). These were taken away, but after ten minutes they were still not back and my curry was also going cold, so they took that away also. When I finally got my meal back, my friends had virtually finished their meal. I was told so sorry we will look after you at the end. Nothing. I must say the food itself was lovely but not sure whether I would go back as was not treated very well.

The food, ambiance, service and everything inbetween were all amazing. Keep up the good work, really enjoyed my meal there.

This is hidden gem in Hoddesdon, the best Indian restaurant I have been to. I would recommend tandoori king prawn sizzling it's to die for the theatre of burning alcohol at the table made the whole evening memorable. The waiters are attentive and are always on hand when drinks need replenishing. If you haven't been you need to visit I'm Indian and I recommend this place.

Never had a problem with the takeaway or eating in the restaurant, service is always A* and friendly, food is always exceptional

Went with friends as it used to be my favourite Indian , but the food and device was terrible , they was only 2 waiters serving , had to wait ages to order and it came out stone cold , next day our stomach felt bad . Need to find a new place.

On two occassions I phoned in for a takeaway to be delivered. On both occassions they forgot the address and when I had to phone in again after waiting for nearly an hour and a half, the food arrived cold.On the second occassion they said we do not deliver then when I cancelled the order he said OK I have a car I will deliver - again forgot address had to phone again and the takeaway was cold plus the quality of food was terrible. Will never use them again.

The Raj Mahal is my very favourite restaurant the quality of the food is excellent well presented, ample servings, it is a family managed restaurant with first class service - nothing is too much trouble and you are made very welcome each time you visit.The ambiance of the restaurant is first class and the decor very tastful. I give it a 5* rating.

We had a great meal here the other Sunday. The food was well cooked and full of flavours with a good consistency. The portions are also fair size. Not too much or too little but just right. The only negative is staff tend to forget to check on your requirements and when ask for additional drinks or items, it was missed out.

We booked for 6pm. We were seated promptly, initially felt a bit hurried to order (hadn't had a chance to read the drinks list/look at the menu properly)but once we had ordered the pace was perfect. We had poppadoms and dips, a mix of curries, rices and 2 vegetable side dishes.No complaints about the food whatsoever. We liked it enough to ask for a 'doggy bag' to take home! Nice touch with the owner (?) shaking hands with each of us as we left - he seemed to do this with everyone.

Had a good meal here last night which was tasty but just a little dry. Portions were good but would have personally just liked a little more sauce. Next time i will ask but definatly worth a visit as the other two local curry houses have dropped just a tad following take overs a year or so back.

I have visited the Raj a few times trying a different curry each time and all have been great! the menu has a fantastic layout with an extensive selection available.The staff are always friendly and the service is great.All in all a lovely place for an evening out.

Enjoyed the meal. However as always service is about enjoying and leaving when you are ready Takes a long time to get a bill despite asking 3 times. Need to improve in service terms.

Excellent India one of our favourites.As greeted with a welcoming handshake. Service is swift. A wide range of dishes on the menu. Food is full of flavour, colourful and well presented. You are given plenty of time. We have never been rushed. When we have gone with our wheelchair user son staff are very helpful. Flat entrance but glass and quite tight for larger powerchairs. We have found the disabled toilet used as a storeroom at times. Staff offer to move cleaning tools but our son finds it a bit embarrassing. Parking can be tight. There is a disabled parking bay outside the doors but it is often abused.Prices are a little more expensive then other restaurants in the area. But well worth it. If you decide to go here for a special occasion I recommend you book especially at weekends.We are always offered a drink on the house once given the bill. Waiters are good at their trade. The owner is often in house. He always spends time chatting to his customers. They know how to keep the customer happy. I highly recommend this restaurant

Went here 23/4/15 for my birthday meal and what a treat! Great service. We had the sizzling lamb prawns and chicken with coconut ice cream for dessert. Food was beautiful and tasty I can't wait to go back!

We went with friends as we lives far few miles away are friends who live locally suggested we try it .food was first class and service and food was worth the drive to get to the Restuarant Service was good decor was modern. Bill for 4 was less then £100We shall go against worththedrive

Been here a few times when I lived in the area, but this is my 1st trip for over 7 years. Glad we booked as it was packed. Was really modern looking, however, the lighting was terrible, couldn't read the menu's. Also there appeared to be no drinks menu. Service was quite slow. Food was excellent, although my friend didn't get what she ordered. Took a good 10 mins to get a staff members attention. Would go again though.

A proper authentic Indian experience with a nice atmosphere at a competitive price. The food was fantastic! I haven't had a closer experience to traditional Indian food in England. The service was great (one of the waiters got a phone charger for me). Everyone was very professional and always seemed to come by the tables precisely when wanted. The ambiance is a rare blend of sophisticated while still being an appropriate family environment. So to conclude, while this restaurant can be a bit out of the way for most I would say that it is definitely worth the trip.

Visited here with friends and for £20 per head we were all surprised. Especially after such mixed reviews. Food was delicious and staff were very welcoming. Service was a little slow as it was busy but three waiters were dealing with one table (party of 4) and we waited a while to order the bill. That said we would definately visit again

If your looking for a good Indian restaurant offering good food, reasonable prices and friendly service then this is your place. Been coming here for over 15 years and never had a bad experience. Would highly recommend.

Dont normally bother writing reviews, but ive been to a lot of Indian restaurants and this one is one of the best in the area. Great food, friendly staff, family run business. With a 5* food hygiene record. Keep it up guys! !

All of these positive revues can't possibly be of the same Raj Mahal that we visited. After asking the waiting staff several times, they eventually took our order after a full hour of waiting. If we were on our own we would have walked out, but as we were with a group we all waited. The food, when it eventually arrived, was at best OK.

We have been eating at this restaurant for over 25 years, and have always had a friendly service. Service can be a little slow at busy times, but the end result is always excellent.Their Dansak sauce is the best I have had anywhere, however, no matter what you order, you will get a rich, tasty meal.

As a customer of 12 years I thought I'd better write something on here!Curries are always excellent, not thin and runny, but with nice consistency. Waiters are all really professional.I now drive 20 miles to go to this restaurant as I haven't found a better one in Hertfordshire.

We went to the Raj Mahal on a Saturday night and found it to be a really great restaurant with tasty food (the Lamb Korma and Onion Bhaji in particular) and friendly staff. Our server was attentive and happy to suggest dishes to try when we asked, and the chef came out half way through our meal to ask how we were getting on. The atmosphere was relaxed, even on a Saturday night, and the layout meant that you had plenty of space. I'd definitely recommend the Raj Mahal to others.

My husband and I have been here many times and also had takeaway from here too. When go into restaurant they always give a friendly attentive service and always go out of way to make you feel special. They never fail to cook delicious 1st class meals either in restaurant or takeaways.We have been here with friends too and they have been impressed with service and food. Wouldn't hesitate in recommending this restaurant to others.

Have been here a number of times as it is convenient. Sometimes the service is good but last time we had to ask someone to take our order as they seemed to forget we were there. Most of the food is of a good quality although we would not order the Saag Paneer again as both times it has been ordered there were no actual lumps of Paneer in it, it was just liquid.

a nice evening out at a new restaurant the taj mahal service is excellent price is very good and the main meal once again to be fair to my reviewers I had chicken madras was excellent .the only small disappointment were the popperdoms which were not fresh and the sauces could have been better but overall an excellent restaurant and I will visit again and would recommend

Having been to the raj many times before and the food being great . We (6 of us )were unlucky enough to go on New Year's Eve 2013 the food was cold orders were wrong . It seemed as though they had over booked and were still continuing their take away service . Which they could not cope with. We were very disappointed and will not be returning to eat in . We have been using the takeaway service for over ten years and has always been consistently good . What a shame could have been a good night !!!

I went here on a lunchtime as part of a large party.Food: Really nice. Fresh and well prepared. My sizzling dish was a little more cooked than you often get - but this was ideal for me as I like that. Of the 20+ people I heard nothing but compliments on the food.Price: Its not cheap and cheerful - but worth the money in my opinion.Service: Great - helpful and well organised.Would recommend.

I have been to this restuarant many times and had to write about how fantastic it is. I am from St ALbans and have not found an Indian to rival here yet. The food is amazing as is the seervice and the ambience. If you like Indian come here

This is the best indian around. Me and my partner eat in there once a week. The waiters are very polite. Couldnt ask for a better atmosphere. The food is fast and the meals are delicious! Would definatly recommend this indian.

This is definitely worth a visit to eat in or have as takeaway as food is delicious either way. The service is next to none and staff are very friendly.We had a takeaway last month with my best friend and her husband and they said it was best Indian they tasted. Definitely worth a visit or takeaway you wont be disappointed!

The Raj Mahal is just round the corner from our house so a big group of us went here after work one Thursday. It was very quiet but we booked just in case because there was 10 of us. They offered us one poppadom per person at the start but we greedily said two and we should have listened to them. We ended up stuffing our faces with the chutneys before our mains! I ordered lamb tikka pasanda, coconut rice and peshwari naan - all of which was delicious and I would have again. The naan and rice were plenty enough to share between two, but I liked having my own curry. The waiter happily boxed up half the pasanda with a bit of rice for me because I didn't finish it which was lovely the next day. They offered a complimentary shot at the end which was very nice, like a baileys sort of drink, and a free mint chocolate. It came to £20 a head with quite a few drinks including tip so not cheap but what you would expect. This is definitely going to be our regular takeaway from now on! Hopefully it'll be just as good as the restaurant food.

My friend got his order wrong and when the food was served they quickly went and swapped it for what he wanted, service is very good and the shots you get after are also very nice

We have just moved into Ware Road and thought we would give the Raj Mahal a try for lunch.10 out of 10! We were most impressed with the food, service and decor. Very friendly staff who gave good advice without being pushy. The Tandori mixed grill was exceptional and a very very generous portion. My friend had a prawn curry which was perfect. The nan breads were authentic and freshly baked. The rice perfectly steamed.Working in the City of London I have eaten many times in Brick Lane E1 and I must say that the quality and style of cuisine at the Raj surpasses most, if not all of them! Being lunchtime we didn't have any alcohol but when we go back we will sample the drinks...We will be regulars for sure!

I went there with friends and we have seen that this restaurant got 5 stars for hygiene management .. From the local council .. We mentioned that one of friend cannot eat nuts and also no contact with nuts as As she gets a big reaction. We soon got our food in the restaurant and to our shock we had up leave as my friend got a reaction .. I mentioned to the waiter that she has got a reaction and he replies maybe some nut in dishe.. I won't be going there again.

Every time I have been here either for a meal or take away the food and service have been excellent and never disappoint. I would say its one of the best places to eat and that is saying something as I am extremely fussy when it comes to food. Would definitely recommend .

Food was terrible and if you complained to the staff it wasn't their fault but ours. They were rude and the food took a long time to come out. When it did come out we wish it hasn't, it was cold, tasted disgusting and we were told it was nut free yet two people had a reaction to them. When we brought this up again it must be our fault and we must have been ill before going there. They do not take blame for the food they make. AVOID THIS RESTAURANT
