The staff weren't very friendly or welcoming. £8.20 for an indifferent cappucino and a flat white made by a machine rather than a barista was a rip-off. I won't be going back.

Had a pre booking made with work colleagues. Our food choice had already been sent over to the restaurant ahead of the booking to ensure the restaurant was aware of any allergies and food intolerance our party had. When the waitress came to take our orders, she was certainly not aware of the pre orders already placed. I have food intolerances that trigger medical conditions that I suffer with, so the company I work for had already communicated this and arranged a slight alternative for my main meal. When it was my turn to order, I said that I had already pre ordered a slight alternative and was having the lamb dish but with chicken instead of lamb. I was told they didn't have chicken, and it couldn't be done. I had to say this had already been arranged, so I repeated myself. I was then asked (in front of the whole table of work colleagues) what I had (condition) and what couldn't I eat. I said I wasn't comfortable having that conversation and that the restaurant already knew of the order and slight alternative to the dish I was having. I believe the restaurant manager then intervened and explained to the waitress that this had been arranged and that I was having the lamb dish but chicken instead. This altercation shouldn't have occurred, and staff need to be more sensitive surrounding food allergies and intolerance. Not everyone is comfortable expressing what conditions they have, especially in front of colleagues. However, I didn't let this experience ruin the evening, and colleagues that overhead were very empathic to the situation and didn't make a big deal about it, which eased the situation for me. The food was excellent and tasted amazing. I also enjoyed a delicious breakfast the next morning, so I would recommend the food 100%.

We were here for a Christmas party as part of the events they organise on the weekends before Christmas. We were seated quickly and our food came quickly. The prawn starter was tasty, the beef main also had a lot of flavour. The veg was slightly over-cooked for my liking but not too much. Cheese & biscuits were nice too (can't upload the photo for some reason). If you had any room left after that, tea & coffee with mince pies were available, although I took my mince pie home! There was a good atmosphere in the room. A few of our party won prizes in the crackers that were included (free bottle of house wine etc.).

This hotel is a well known establishment of Llandrindod and is of historical significance. I have been here in the past, mainly for a few drinks, but never to eat. A local family member took my wife and I for Sunday lunch. We definitely booked late for 2pm and that was our first mistake. Our second mistake was turning up. We were a party of four. Lunch choices was either two or three courses. My wife settled for two course, pork with veggies and a trifle like desert. I settled for a soup starter followed by fillet of cod and veggies. I like my soup hot, not just warm. Should have sent it back. The veggies for both meals, were overcooked and obviously the left overs from earlier lunches. My fillet of cod was served on a bed of red cabbage and drowned by a revolting sauce. One mouthful was a enough for me. What really heart was asking for coffee three time before I got one. Service was terrible, had to remind them a number of times where are our drinks. The bill for four people for the privilege of dining in the historic hotel came to £91 including £4.40 for a glass of coke, now that hurt. Thankfully I depart Llandrindod and UK shortly to the land down under where the food is half the price and superior quality.

The Metrolole is particularly geared up for handling large groups. The food was very good, with ample portions, and by having a choice of four items per course (and it changes each day anyway), they are able to handle it very efficiently, so there were none of the long waiting times which can cause annoyance. Everyone in our large group was happy with the food.

While staying at the metropole hotel for 3 nights we ate in the restaurant for breakfast. On arrival you check in & are then shown to your table. The breakfast is all self service the is a good selection of bread for you to toast or cremate depending on the toasted settings, fresh fruit, cereals & cooked breakfast. The cooked breakfast there were sausages, bacon, fried eggs, hash browns, baked beans, mushrooms, black pudding & scrambled eggs, the only problem being that the freshly cooked food was being put on the old food which should of been removed so if you were unlucky you could end up with a dried up bit of bacon. the restaurant does get busy at times so try to visit early if you can. You also make your own tea or coffee which there was a selection of coffees & teas, there was however no hot chocolate which was an additional charge. The staff were all friendly on the breakfast service & there was plenty of food to keep you going for the morning. If you are staying at the metropole then it is worthwhile having breakfast here.

We had eaten here the day after our wedding 11 years ago and it was lovely, went for an anniversary dinner and were rather disappointed to be honest. The service is genuinely excellent, can't fault the staff. The menu for a Saturday evening service was pretty dull and the food itself wasn't great. Possibly the worst meal out I've had in Llandod. The starter was quite nice though, and the staff really are great. You can get better food for less money locally however.

Lovely historic hotel and restaurant with great views. This was a lunchtime visit. I chose the sole for main. The presentation was very good and it was cooked just right, it tasted delicious. For desert I chose the Chocolate & Orange Gateau. Again the presentation was very good and it tasted delicious. We had a bottle of the El Muro which complimented the meal well. The staff were friendly and attentive. There was an error on our bill which was quickly amended.

We booked the taster menu as part of a stay and dine package - £140 for an upgraded tower room and the 6 course taster menu for two. Fantastic value when booked together! The food was excellent - we really enjoyed each course. The fillet of beef and the dauphinoise potatoes, in particular, was fantastic. The crab was pretty good too. The service was excellent, timing of the courses good, and the wine list reasonable and reasonably priced. A very minor "improvement opportunity" would be the glassware on the table - the wine glasses were a bit thick / cheap, better quality / finer wine glasses would add to the culinary / dining experience. The glassware wasn't consistent with the high quality of the food or the wine. Overall - excellent, we would definitely go back.

Called for a chance lunch. There is nothing to say about this place that could be thought of as a compliment. The food, service, surroundings atmosphere was decidedly third rate and the most memorable thing was we dined at a table next the owners. Really, if they are prepared to accept these standards what chance is there; a result of being handed it all on a plate if you'll forgive the pun. I know it's only Mid-Wales but nonetheless......................

Traditional Hotel and restaurant with excellent customer service and delicious well prepared food. I had Melon & Pineapple to start and it was lovely. The Mint drizzle was divine. I could have eaten more. I then had Beef Stroganoff which was really tender and tasty. My partner had Chicken Liver Pate and Welsh Lamb and he cleaned both plates. The taster menu appears to be static for some time so if you are looking for variety switch to the a la carte menu on your second visit.A reasonable wine list is available although on our deal we were provided with a glass of wine at the start of the meal. I work for an organisation that covers all of Wales so our "Christmas do" was held in the Metropole on a dark, cold, wet, snowy December Wednesday. I think Llandrindod was chosen as a venue because it's equally inconvenient for anyone coming from any part of Wales. In my case it involved a three and a half hour drive there in the morning and a three and a half hour drive home in the afternoon. Having a decent lunch was therefore much needed to lift the gloom and misery.

As you'd expect from a hotel, the restuarant was of a pub/bar style, with a menu that was ordered from the bar. Our group was happy with the food and service, the staff were very helpful and friendly. My own fault for not paying attention (I was slightly ill on the day) but I was really excited for the special of "Whole Lemon Sole" but I didn't realise that it was literally just that. There was no side salad or veg. The fish itself was perfect though, but had I known (or someone checked) I would have ordered something to complement it! By the time the food had arrived and I realised, it was a bit too late to try and order anything additional, as the first stuff would have gone cold. Oh well, lovely place nonetheless. As you'd expect for a hotel restaurant, the food was a tiny bit on the pricey side, but it did average with other establishments of a similar nature. Would return, and order properly next time :)

The starter (soup), was ok but the main course, beef, was the fattiest piece of meat I have ever been offered. Not just fat around the edges but running throughout and a slightly tough beast to boot. Service was friendly enough but the various nationalities serving us didn't seem to understand or follow basic service protocols. Having recently eaten the most wonderful steaks and had brilliant service in the USA, I suggest this hotel (which aspires to be 4 star), should send its chefs and servers to America to see how it's done.I did quietly inform one of the servers how bad the beef was and she promised to pass on my thoughts to the cook. I won't call them waiters or chefs because I don't feel they are competent enough.

We spent 4 nights at the hotel & used the restaurant for dinner and breakfast each day. We ate in the conservatory which was for residents whilst there was a larger dining area in another room for coach parties. The conservatory room and table clothes and cutlery were spotless and there was ample staff around for service though on two evening occasions it became a little erratic with dinner taking 2 hours to complete on one night. We were on the 6 course taster menu and had the normal taster menu one night, the vegetarian taster menu another and the standard 3 course menu other times, all served with a glass of champagne. The food on all menus was very good however none of us managed to complete the meal as all four of us were full on every taster menu before the last course (Heated Camembert with frozen grapes & biscuits). My one disappointment was why does the tea/coffee served after the meal have to be charged extra instead of being included in the menu? The breakfast was a buffet with an excellent choice of cereals, yoghurts, breads, fruit & an extensive cooked selection all very good quality & nicely presented for your own choice. This was our second stay at the hotel and every meal was really enjoyable on both visits. We dined as part of the Tasting menu deal which was excellent and really good value for money. We booked two nights so opted for the alternative dinner menu which had three choices per course. For this night the experience was not as good, the main course being the mosr dissappointing. I would have expected better quality welsh lamb. The chops were small with little meat and poor flavour. This was served on a vast bed of beans and the odd sprig of broccolli. Otherwise the meal was good. There wasa good wine list but beware you will not get a decent choice for less than £22. On one night I was given an alternative bottle without being told. Only when I brought this to the attention of the waiter did I secure the price I wanted to pay. Beware the more expensive substitute. Service was slick to the point that when dineres were on their last course, eager waiters were already preparing the tables for breakfast. There was also a large boisterous group of male diners in the restaurant that did spoil the ambiance. They should have been offered another room from other diners. We still felt this was the best place to eat in the town and would not hesitate to return.

We chose the Metropole after walking around Llandrindod and assessing what was available. The Radnor was busy and with the decor being as it was we were looking forward to a decently made sandwich a portion of chips and a pint. We had a pleasant local couple to chat with in the bar area which was well set out, we couldn't get a seat in the conservatory which was light and enhanced the Restaurant. The only thing I can say about the sandwiches we had were that they were very ordinary, not the best of bread or filling, hand cut local ham?? and tasteless chicken. The portion of chips were hardly worth the £2.75 it must have taken all of one large spud to make them. The pint was decent enough as was the company. Maybe we only wanted a sandwich but if it's on the menu, the quality should reflect the price and visa versa.

I organized a social gat together here last Sunday finishing with an illustrated talk by one of our group. Everything was ready as arranged and nicely led out in a very nice room. Choice of 2 bars - there were lots of people gathering but still plenty of seating in main lobby. With several of us in the party, we organized who wanted what which was appreciated by the server. Drinks were prompt, the food arrived surprisingly quickly. We chose the 2 and 3 course luncheon. The starters we chose between us of Soup, Prawn Cocktail and chicken salad were all raved over. I have allergies to one meat on the menu, which I mentioned. The chef made me my own gravy and potatoes so it was not tainted by any fat from another meat. Really helpful. Lamb, beef and vegetarian were all great. Deserts were a difficult choice with the majority opting for Apple and cherry crumble which apparently was to die for. A friend sat by me said if I wasn't looking she would have licked her bowl it was so good! Praise indeed. I went for the Lemon Tart which was brilliant and made up for my disappointment in not choosing the crumble! We were treated very well and to be honest surprised how good it was. Only 2 days before there was a booking of 180 for lunch and they also had us and a 60th Birthday luncheon. Although a fair way from home, we would go there again. I don't think you will be disappointed. With so many people knowing their way around the Hotel it must have been repeat customers. A good sign and well done to the staff at the Metropole

We had a lovely stay at the Metropole Hotel, if only for one night. The food was delicious, service and staff first class and the pool also a lovely way to relax before having dinner. Our room was comfortable and the only negative being the extractor fan in the en-suite. Each time you entered the bathroom the light went on along with the extractor fan, which remained on for at least 20 minutes after leaving the bathroom. This didn't cause a problem before bedtime but if you wanted to use the bathroom in the night, was a nuisance, but wouldn't stop me paying the Metropole another visit.

My wife and I ate at this restaurant whilst staying at the hotel in December 2014. We both had the six course tasting menu which was excellent, particularly the fillet of beef. Both food (most of which is locally sourced) and wine were reasonably priced and the service was very good. I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant.

Total spoiling and excellent food. The afternoon tea was a disappointment as we ordered cream teas but we had drunk 2 cups of tea and on the second occasion of asking about the scones we were told they were being cooked from frozen . At this point we asked for our money back as we had to leave to get home.

We stayed at the Metropole after finding a deal on travelzoo which included the 6-course tasting menu. It was the highlight of our trip and I thoroughly enjoyed the food. I recommend anybody take advantage of the current travelzoo offer if it is for the meal alone.

Visited for lunch Wednesday 29th October. To be fair, the place was pretty busy, but the service was very poor. I ordered for 5 of us, one of whom was just having a starter as she wasn't very hungry. I asked for everything to be served together as the starter. The starter proved to be unavailable and we were offered an alternative which came almost immediately, but without the other meals. After an hour waiting and several enquiries the other meals arrived. But. . . . not the ones we ordered. Instead of Feta, pea, broadbean and mint burgers, we received very ordinary vegeburgers. Despite being told that the feta etc burgers were made mostly of chickpea, these had no trace of feta, broadbean or mint, being flavoured with copious amounts of cumin and curry powder. We were offered the correct item but had no more time to wait so we accepted a large reduction on the bill. The restaurant was in turmoil with waiting staff belting about at high speed with meals they knew not for which table they were intended, despite each order being given a numbered wooden spoon. All in all the food was very expensive for what it was and we will be reluctant to go again

Not good enough for the Cost charged. No a la Carte menu so we had the set menu instead and it was ok but not worth the £26.50 each we were charged for the food.

There was thee chance to be in a small group or larger groups by choice. Plus you were able to book your dinner time. Food was definitely created by a great chef.

I had the fish and was very happy. My husband had the beef and felt it was over cooked and tough. Breakfast was lovely. I especially enjoyed the ham and a bowl of Muesli.

Went there on Sunday for lunch without booking and although they were busy we were found a table with a view and received excellent and attentive service. The food was of a high quality and my only criticism would be that the vegetables were a little too al dente for me. We therefore returned on the Thursday for lunch in the bar and once more had great food. The Lamb Shank was the best that I've ever had.

Vegetarians are used to being offered just one "choice" and overall, things are improving, with the bad old days of the inevitable vegetarian lasagne now behind us. However, I object to being charged the same price as the meat eaters for a dish that must have cost a fraction of theirs in time, money and effort. Tasteless little pasta packages of spinach and ricotta can be snatched off any supermarket shelf for a pound or two, and dousing the sad little bags in a "homemade" tomato sauce garnished with floppy garlic bread and a small (very small) grating of cheese does not give value for money. The front-of-house service in this restaurant is speedy and courteous, but I'm afraid the back-room boys clearly view vegetarians with contempt.

Liked almost everything about Llandrindod Wells - the people, the quirky shops and the area in general. The only dislike was a lack of womenswear shops! However, everything else far outweighed this slight disappointment...........Great place to visit

We ate at The Radnor Restaurant for the three evenings we stayed at The Metropole. Our only negative comment would be that we found the menu a little limited. On the three nights we ate in the restaurant it was very busy, with several coach parties and conferences with very few tables spare. We did not have to wait long on any evening to be shown to our table. We waited just the right length of time between our courses. The food was of an excellent quality, well prepared and cooked and was in the case of The Excellent Fillet Steak cooked as required. The staff all appeared happy in their jobs (sadly a rare occurrence these days) and were a credit to the Metropole and its Management. They were happy when asked to arrange drinks from the bar (Spencers) although we preferred to get our own. We are already looking forward to our next visit

Group of 6 adults aged 30-45 and half of the group left still hungry after a 3 course meal. A group of thirsty punters arrived and felt like we were in a church group, as we spend the first 30 mins drinking water and eating bread!!! eventually alcohol arrived, although the wine choice we made ran out after 2 bottles, in a hotel that could cater for hundreds at a time between function rooms and restaurant, this was quite disapointing. Most of the group enjoyed the starters of Soup, Sea Bream and the asparagus, although not much asparagus in that particular starter more lettuce but tasty all the same. Mains mostly consisted of Fillet steak (purely due to poor choice on menu, 2 fish, 2 vegi and fillet were the options) all enjoyed the steak and it was very tasty although no-one had it cooked as requested all one step overdone (e.g. med/rare was med. etc) and the cod and pork belly dish was quite a disapointment with the so called pork belly just being a piece of pork. The overall size of the meals was a big disapointment, definately needed desert to try and fill up. Deserts were delicous, although a comment was made that the cheese board had more on the plate than the main meal! all in all for £30 ish a head for 3 courses it was a very tasty meal, but very very al a carte and having been to michelin starred restaurants and been full the protions were very disapointing. Service wasn't great either although once a large group vacated it did improve, perhaps they should have mentioned this when booking, we would have happily left it half hour later. very hotel feeling to the service rather than restaurant. and being served horse radish sauce onto my plate for me made it feel a little like an old peoples home. Would have also been nice if we had been asked at any point during meal if everything was ok!! Probably wont go back although would perhaps try a bar meal in the hotel front bar, what a great place that was to enjoy after dinner drinks with friends.

Think it's all very posh but it's out of touch with modern people, and the food isn't all that.. And service wasn't brilliant either, but as half our party was over 75 which is the average age of the place.. It wasnt outer cup of tea, won't be going back

50 of my colleagues and I stayed at the Metropole for a seminar. The lunch was perfect - an excellent choice of hot and cold foods, good vegetarian options, and the staff were very polite and helpful - and not too 'heavy'.The conference facilities were also very good.

We were staying about 12 miles away from Llandrindod Wells but when we asked around for recommendations for Sunday lunch, the Metrople Radnor Restaurant was highly recommended by locals. We were not disappointed. The confortable restaurant with big picture windows was busy but not overcrowded. Staff were plentiful and attentive. A request to replace lettuce with rocket leaves in the starter for my wife was no problem.Food was freshly cooked, tasty, presented nicely and sufficient in quantity - enough in fact to enable us to resist the temprtation of dessert. We enjoyed a bottle of wine with the meal.We had coffee in the lounge area near reception and took advantage of the free WiFi.The meal cost £12.95 each for 2 courses with coffee and £17 for the wine, plus tip. Good value for that quality in our opinion.

A group of 4 of us went to the Metropole Hotel for lunch last week. The menu was not explicit about what vegetables came with what dish, and questions to the waitress only added to the confusion. My wife does not like mushy peas but we were unable to establish if they were automatically provided with the dish that she ordered so we took a chance and placed our orders. The vegetables were universally considered to be undercooked. (Incidentally following a request the mushy peas were excluded from my wife’s meal) Properly cooked vegetables should be firm but not difficult to cut. My baked Hake was slightly over cooked but it had a very strong flavour which was not particularly pleasant and which I could not identify. It was almost as if the batter had been overdosed with some sort of fermented fish sauce. The result was that one could not taste the fish and it could have been anything, not necessarily Hake. The chipped potatoes were very average with quite a number being thin slip ends of potato which were over cooked and hard. None of the meal was really bad enough to send back but it was not a good meal and neither my wife and I, nor our friends, who are residents of Llandrindod, would readily go back there for a meal. Perhaps the fact that only about 13 people took lunch in what is probably a 100+ dining room in the middle of the Victorian Festival indicates that a lot of people have already found out what we now know about the lunchtime catering. It is particularly disappointing for what, to all appearances, is a well turned out hotel which provides such a benefit to the Town in many other ways during the Victorian Festival, exhibitions, talks, toilet facilities, somewhere to rest your feet for a little while, etc. Sadly our rating is therefore only Average, with perhaps Average minus for food on this particular day.

This is the second time I have stopped here for food on a journey from South to North Wales. On both occasions the food and the service has been excellent. In fact my Fiancée now wants us to book a couple of days at the hotel as we could do with a little break away from the rat race.

Had a room booked to celebrate a birthday in December. Had a bit of an odd feeling about the place in August as the booking calendar suddenly disappeared. My wife called them and was assured that everything was fine and we would be welcomed in December. Had an email on 3rd September from a winding-up firm that the Unicorn ceased trading and went into voluntary liquidation from 1st September and I would join a list of creditors. I guess that's my deposit: the cost of a night's stay, is forfeit.

Very tasty food, one of the only restaurants I’ve tried in this town that was actually good! I’m glad in such a small town there’s an opportunity to try such heartwarming food.
