Very tasty food, one of the only restaurants I’ve tried in this town that was actually good! I’m glad in such a small town there’s an opportunity to try such heartwarming food.

We were a noisy family party of 13. Our order got a little mixed up as a result. However, the staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The manager even gave us extra portions as an apology for the mix up with the orders. In my view the waitress did an amazing job despite the challenge we presented. The food was amazing and we really enjoyed out time with these folk.

We ate here twice while staying in Newtown, the food was very good and at a very realistic price. I highly recommend this place.

A really different place to eat. A new experience for me and delicious food

Stunning, authentic and homely Jamaican cuisine! Having never tried Jamaican food before this was the first unbeatable experience. Not forgetting to mention the 5 star service. We weren’t sure what to try first so the owner kindly gave us some complimentary dishes to try on the house which was incredibly kind. The curry mutton was mouth watering with an explosion of flavour and tenderness, likewise with the curry goat we got to try! Sadly we are from Suffolk so we are unable to visit easily but we do come to Wales every year so if we are ever near to Hummingbird Lounge, we will most definitely be back for more. What a great evening very friendly prompt service. Very interesting menu and great choice,never had Caribbean food.Made fresh good portion sizes and extremely tasty. Spoke to Jonal great guy ,very warm heart gave the delivery guy a chicken breast as he had not ate. Would definitely go there again , thank you.

Fantastic food, great vibe & friendly service

My dad lives locally. Me not so much. But every time I visit. We always go. The guy who runs it, Johnals, is one of the most honest. Caring and genuinely all round lovely men I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. And everyone he hires represents those values. The food goes without saying. It's amazing! They always catered to me when I was vegetarian. And they were one of the first places I tried meat once I converted. I could not recommend this place more. Always treated like family. Genuinely. Hand on heart. Love this place

Called in for lunch with family of 4, inc my relatively fussy teenagers. Everyone loved the food. Great value. Having just been holidaying in US and paying a fortune for meals that were pretty mediocre, this place was a real find. Great job!

Just had the most amazing evening at the humminbird. We were a large group and arrived late on but were welcomed. The food was amazing!! and the guys even stayed on after closing. Thank you was one of the best night ever!!

Incredible to have such a restaurant in Newtown! We absolutely love coming to Hummingbird. The team are wonderful and food is top notch!

Absolutely dissatisfying and disappointed. Horribly small size portions for the prices, hardly any meat in the dishes mostly just fillers like rice. Bbq sauce not bbq sauce at all just some chilli mix which made your mouth on fire… for a place that apparently has been so blown up by some its a rip off and a lie not worth at all do not recommend. I loved Caribbean food from authentic restaurants but this definitely is not one of them.

Called in for booked in meal on Thursday to find they were closed, staff inside realised we had a booking and allowed us in. The food was lovely and staff accommodating. I personally recommend the burrito will definitely call in again

What a wonderful place to stop off and get some munch. Would thoroughly recommend the food, the atmosphere and the staff. Great vegan options, the plantain, the onion rings, the vegetable curry, and the BBQ vegan jerk bites were amazing 🤩. The owner is a top bloke and the servers were friendly, helpful and the service was quick. Will stop here again when travelling through.

We had take away eating home made carribean with festival dumpling but these were not an option on this night to lack off staff as explained but was not on menu food Fried chickhen waz tasteless rice was in stored in container to long

Good food. The mutton was very soft and the coleslaw was amazing. I expected the dumplings to be a crescent shaped dumpling with fillings but the round Jamaican dumplings were very good as well, slightly sweet. The mutton sauce was quite salty which I didn't expect. Good peppermint tea. I was served the best sweet potato chips that I have eaten so far in my life.

I had a to good to go bag from there tonight so much food for your money fed 3 of us an was beautiful will definitely be going back.

Happened upon this place as we were in Newtown picking up some things...what a find! We had plantain, jerk jackfruit, prawn curry and a jerk chicken wrap and it was all amazing, as was the Guinness Punch. Had a lovely chat with the owner too who's really friendly. I'd be eating there every day if I lived local!

Me and my partner have ordered 3 days in a row now, we’re obsessed! The burritos are incredible, the flavours are out of this world! Our personal favourite are the mutton topped fries!! If I could give a higher review I would.

Good selection of vegan dishes, but I was accused of vaping inside by the waitress, obviously I had not been. The only thing I can think is that they mistook me filling up my vape for me using it. Either way, it completely put me off my food and I ended up leaving without taking a bite.

Omg the curried mutton is amazing! I'll definitely order again :) so nice to have something different in the area. Gluten free cake was also amazing, and I'm not even gluten free.

Wanted to say fab things. Read the reviews before we came. Had high hopes. VERY friendly staff. That was good. Rice and peas was very good. Hence the two stars. BUT, no mutton, no goat. Ordered veggie curry. Flavour was nice. But it wasn’t hot - it was like warm and did not include the advertised okra. It was just yam and potato. Also, the quantity was just a small bowl it was like a side dish. It cost £8 and had two new potatoes and 3 small bits of yam in a sauce. My brother and I ordered the same thing: veggie curry, rice and peas side salad and coleslaw (which was about 2 tablespoons each) a can of tang grapefruit. This came to £24.00. Also, the floor was dangerous/slippy and I nearly fell over and the toilet was the same. Lovely people but wouldn’t recommend.

Can’t speak highly enough of Hummingbird. Unfortunately I don’t get to sample the food enough as I’m a bit out of town. The portion sizes are ample and the service you get is always with a smile. Food made and served with love

We were visiting wales for a long weekend and on our way to Carno decided to stop off in Newtown for some lunch. It was pretty late for lunch (3pm) and pretty much everything was closed, we were about to give up and get a greggs when we saw hummingbird. I love Jamaican food but rarely get to eat it as there are very few places that do it (from Sheffield) so was surprised to find one in little Newtown. It was empty when we looked through the window so we were a bit skeptical but are we glad we went in! The owner (whose name I unfortunately can’t remember) was so friendly and welcoming. I (vegetarian) had a veggie patty and plantain and my boyfriend had the curried chicken with chips. It was sooooo good! The owner also gave us some fried dumplings to try that were absolutely delicious. We bought 6 more to take with us and ate over the following days. We had planned to stop by again on the Monday when we were leaving but were very sad to see they were closed. If we are ever in the area again we will be coming back. The food was outstanding and the hospitality was just great. All the best for this place, they deserve a packed restaurant and a line out the door Edit: We have just been back for a second time, a year on! Another long weekend in wales, we knew we had to come back! Though it added an extra 45 minutes onto our journey, we knew it was worth it. Got food to takeaway this time, once again, absolutely phenomenal. They didn’t have any dumplings when I went in (our absolute favourite), but Johnal was kind enough to make some especially for us! So so happy to see they are still open, and I hope business just keeps getting better for them, they deserve it! 100% recommend a visit, we will certainly be making a pitstop here anytime we visit wales (hopefully won’t have to wait a year again).

Called in as couldn't get website order to work. Asked for a random selection of food and handed some money over. Excellent service, excellent food. Will be back!

Friendly and welcoming staff everytime we've been in, service is good and wait times aren't bad especially at lunchtime! Recently had Hummingbird delivered and as usual, we were totally satisfied with the service and food! Johal and his team do an incredible job and provide exemplary food to the town. Priced really well too, getting excellent value for money and possibly the nicest take out food in town. Keep up the great work guys, we look forward to having another Hummingbird soon! We usually have curried Chicken with rice and peas or Sweet potato fries, jerk chicken or fried chicken and occasionally curried mutton.

This was DELICIOUS! I had the lamb poutine and the meat was soooooo tender. Perfect flavouring, very generous portions and so yummy. My grandfather lives in Newtown and I think this will be our regular eat our place whenever we come and visit. So so good.

Came here with my wife a few days ago. Happened to just pass by and thought we would try it. Oh my god. The food is amazing. Genuinely one of the best meals I have ever eaten. I had the curried Chicken with Rice and peas and seasoned fries. The curry flavour is so intense and deep and the chicken just melted in my mouth. My wife had the curries prawns and the sauce was so delicious. The service was polite and friendly. The vibe of the whole place was really chilled. If we lived closer we would be in there all the time. An absolute gem of a restaurant.

Stumbled upon this little gem on accident and hadn’t paid for parking long enough to stay and eat in but couldn’t resist some take out. I’m from Birmingham and we have our fair share of Jamaican places but the food here is by far the nicest I’ve had. The vibe is nice and welcoming. And in my big city living opinion the prices are cheap! Especially for the quality!

Food is brilliant and excellently priced. Service was slow but think they had staff being trained. Love the colours and music. Will be back. 👍

My first introduction to Jamaican food and it was delicious. A fried chicken wrap, dumplings and sexy juice. Friendly staff, not long to wait and great value for money.

Popped in for lunch. Super helpful, even altering a dish to make it veggie for us. Food was lovely, freshly cooked and tasted authentic Caribbean. We'll definitely be back when we are next in the area.

We had (for a party of 4) the bun and cheese, poutin with chicken gravy, jerk chicken and a curried mutton with a side of fried dumplings. It made us very happy. Its a lovely little cafe, tons of atmosphere, friendly staff, great music, and great food. Please support the place.

Was sat waiting for over an hour for just a chicken wrap (the chicken was already cooked and on the counter!). Tasted nice but service was terrible and ended up taking away

We went today for the first time after looking through the window and meaning to try the food for a while. What a treat!! We've tried a selection of different starters and it was all delicious. I wish I was more hungry to eat more! Generous portions, very reasonably priced, friendly staff, and lovingly chosen decor creating a great atmosphere and invoking the spirit of Jamaica. Loved it! We'll definitely be back to try the mains soon! And the desserts sound lovely, too. 😍 Choices of different meat dishes as well as loads of pescetarian and several vegan options, too. Very much recommended!

Visited for lunch, we had chicken pouting and a portion of ackee and saltfish, both dishes were very tasty and a decent portion, the coleslaw that came with the ackee and saltfish was really tasty. The young lad who served us, while he seemed a bit nervous did a great job and the food came out fast, they have my favourite drink which is rubicon passionfruit. The interior could do with brightening up a little but good they are concentrating on getting the food good rather than throwing their profits on the interior. The 2 dishes and 2 drinks came to £16 and we both can't wait to go back and try some more delicious grub

Lovely meal. I had the Caribbean Fried Chicken with rice and peas &side salad with a Ginger beer. Came to £7.70 altogether and was a great portion so fantastic value. The chicken was perfectly crispy and not at all dry. Would have loved a homemade sauce or dip to accompany the meal (I did have some bbq jerk sauce that was on the table but nothing beats homemade). My friend had the curried chicken with rice and a rio and came to the same price. Very tasty, not to heavy but full of flavour and a little kick too! Friendly, warm welcome and our order was taken quickly and food followed not long afterwards. Lovely to have a place like this in Newtown so please go to support it otherwise it'll just become full of fast food chains and have no soul left! My only pointers would be the lighting in the restaurant was a little dark for lunchtime, music a little too loud (although i guess this is personal preference) and the light in the ladies bathroom was out. Toilets could do with a little fix up too. So nice to see lots of people coming and going for their lunch takeaways whilst here. Would definitely recommend this place and I will for sure be back to try the traditional drinks they had on offer too!

Popped in on my way to the coast and was bitterly disappointed in this place. I ordered fried chicken to take out which had no garnish or chips or rice. £6.50 for essentially two chicken thighs which had very grey meat and looked like it had been cooked and the meat was very poor quality. Would not be coming back, would rather go to the fish and chip shops. This franchise in particular is run by white people who don't know how to cook Jamaican food.

I popped in for lunch and ordered a poutine snack box (chicken curry) So tasty and a very generous portion. I will definitely be going back again! If you haven't been in already it's a must try! Edit 12/05/23: True to my word my wife and returned for an early dinner and this time tried the Caribbean fried chicken strips with spicy gravy on the side along with our firm favorite "snackbox" chicken curry poutine. Delicious and comparibly priced to a a Weatherspoons whilst being vastly fresher and more enjoyable. 10/10 - recommended.

Not bad food, Caribbean style replacing the old chippy which had been there. Very friendly owner. Only tried one meal so far, vegetarian curry, which was quite nice and is sitting well on my stomach a few hours later. My companion had the lamb curry with orange chips. He felt a bit under-awed by it and could only eat half, but the portions were large. The owner explained that orange chips are a Black Country specialty. They are very tasty and slightly sugary, unlike anything I have ever tried before. We’ll probably go again. More likely so, if they offer a lunch special deal with slightly smaller portions, say for £9 including drink.

I had the Vegan curry today for lunch with my husband and our friend. Service was polite and friendly. The food was really good and we didn't have to wait long. The only drawback is that the tables and chairs are fixed and very tight to get in and out of. We all said that we will definitely go again.

Coming from the Caribbean my self…I can honestly say well done brother! The food is fantastic. Every bite and every sip of that Guinness punch takes me back home ☀️ 🌴 🥥 🏝️. Keep the curry goat!! It is a must.
