Unicorn in Powys

Had a room booked to celebrate a birthday in December. Had a bit of an odd feeling about the place in August as the booking calendar suddenly disappeared. My wife called them and was assured that everything was fine and we would be welcomed in December. Had an email on 3rd September from a winding-up firm that the Unicorn ceased trading and went into voluntary liquidation from 1st September and I would join a list of creditors. I guess that's my deposit: the cost of a night's stay, is forfeit.

Dropped in here quite by chance and so glad we did. Food was lovely and fresh - portions were great and even kept our kids filled! Staff were helpful and polite and the space itself is really nice. Definitely recommend visiting if you’re in Llanidloes!

We would not recommend booking this hotel. It is not a hotel as advertised. It had no reception, only an impersonal telephone 'let in', something we were not informed about when we called to book the previous week. The bar and restaurant were closed the night we stayed. The television in our room was not working, and had we read previous reviews, we would have seen that this has been an ongoing issue for several months.

On Saturday 20th July I had two visitors from Australia who took time out of their vacation to see me. I was so happy to see them as I haven’t seen them since 2017. I booked a table here as I wanted to stay local. All three of us order the steak and ale pie. When it came we received lumps of steak in a very water gravy. There was no seasoning whatsoever. I can’t complain about the chips and peas they were fine. Who can get that wrong 😑 There was meant to be rich gravy with said meal. Unfortunately we were served what tasted like bisto gravy. All three of us were very disappointed and will not be entering the premises again. I have been to complain but they were not very interested…so I’ll post this here!

Spent two nights in room 7 which was like a small apartment! Lovely fresh decor with quirky furniture and artworks arround the walls. Lovely clean bathroom with a powerful shower and nice towels. Tea making equip and posh biscuits provided and a small bottle of fresh milk in the fridge for a perfect cup of tea (or coffee, choclate etc). Nice street view from the lounge area and the bedroom, big telly in the lounge, comfy bed, books to read, etc. Had a really nice evening meal (Thai Curry) and two lovely cooked breakfasts. Staff extremely pleasant and helpful, even offered to let me park my motorcycle in their yard. Price very reasonable for the quality of everything. In short very highly recommended and I am quite fussy !

Stayed here for the night on our way down to the Royal Welsh Show and what a lovely place. Entry was via a keysafe as the restaurant wasn't open, but the lady talked us through the entry process and got us to our room. What a beautifully decorated (to a high standard) hotel. The room had everything we needed including a fan (as it was quite warm, it came in very handy) and even a small fridge! Good quality beverages, and oiletries, and patterned towels (a change from standard white hotel towels!). It was quiet in Llanidloes but we managed to have a meal and a few drinks. We didn't have time for breakfast in the morning, but I had a very good sleep in the beautiful and comfortable bed! I really can't fault The Uncorn, highly recommended and would stay here again.

Quaint small old hotel in centre of Llandiloes. No parking. No communal areas but very good breakfast indeed. Rooms clean and large enough.

We booked 6 of the 7 rooms here to attend a wedding in a barn nearby. The manager was unfriendly and unhelpful from the outset. She spent a lot of time behind the bar telling everyone how she’d been working 3 weeks straight, very unprofessional. The main issue was we had no hot water when needed for the 2 night stay and when my sister spoke to the manager she didn’t even apologise and just said they had issues with it and offered to boil kettles. I then said I wasn’t happy with the lack of facilities or service and she simply said “ that’s your opinion” and offered no recompense. They didn’t even bother to service anyone’s room ( although they say they do this) on the second day so we arrived back from the wedding to dirty towels in the shower/bath I asked to speak with the owners and have tried and left several messages but they’ve never contacted me. When I said I’m not prepared to pay for the second nights stay I was threatened with the police so was forced to pay. It’s very noisy at night too as a pub a couple of doors away had music blaring out until 12.30. They provided ear plugs in the room so probably a regular occurrence.

Terrible experience here, they have a known issue ( we found out later) with their hot water system so no hot water 2 days running. We had 6 rooms booked with them for a wedding in a barn venue nearby. None of us were able to get a hot shower before the wedding and when they were told about it the manager didn’t even apologise. The owners were informed but couldn’t be bothered to get in touch with me. When I said I didn’t want to pay for the second night for the 2 rooms I’d booked I was threatened by the manager with the police so obviously had to pay. Avoid at all cost, and the guests at the wedding said there are much nicer places locally.

Nice clean place, however l wanted an evening meal, l went downstairs, only to find the restaurant was closed! It would have been nice to have prior warning. However, there's a good fish and chip shop opposite, so all was good!

A perfect location for this lovely hotel. Right in the heart of Llanidloes and perfect for exploring the surrounding area. A warm welcome, tasty breakfast and comfy bed. I’d have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

This is our second time visiting for Sunday lunch and on both occasions the quality and quantity of food was second to none. We are all meat eaters in our family however there are veg options available too. I would recommend booking as the restaurant can be busy. However we did not at any stage struggle for assistance when required. The restaurant is cosy and clean and the staff were lovely. We will definitely be returning.

Very pleasant smallish restaurant available to non residents in a separate space from the hotel. Nicely presented bao bun starter. Butty Bach available in bottle. Wild mushroom risotto was more like a fricassée and one or two mushrooms were a bit tough. Overall a pleasant experience.

What a find! We stopped here for lunch and we were struck by the varied and quite original menu. Good choice for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. We were served by a very friendly and helpful woman. The food arrived promptly and did not disappoint. The surroundings are pleasant and scrupulously clean. We shall definitely return if we are in the area again.

We had a wonderful four-night stay at the Unicorn. A lovely room with a separate sitting room, delicious food, and generous, helpful staff. We’ll be back for sure!

Wow, what a stunning little hotel. Lovely relaxed atmosphere led by efficient, helpful staff, and absolutely gorgeous, beautifully presented food that looks as good as it tastes. Immaculate room and beds that felt nigh on perfect. Two minor (and I mean minor) nitpicks - one is the lack of dedicated parking, but not difficult to find a space, if not outside, in the public car park just round the corner. The other was the piercing blue 'off' LED on the heating controls being quite bright when trying to get to sleep. If they are the biggest gripes tho, I hope that shows how good everything else was. A good 4.5 stars - and look forward to next time 🙂

I am unable to rate the rooms at The Unicorn as I went for lunch. The lunch service was exceptional and the food was well cooked, plentiful and tasty. The Unicorn is in a beautiful area of mid Wales within easy reach of the Rhayader and Clywedog Dams. If you do go for lunch be sure to book.

If you are looking for a well priced quality accommodation in Mid Wales, look no further. Breakfast was beautifully presented, and there was plenty of choice. Staff were very friendly and helpful

We just couldn’t resist this place again & the joy is they change their menu so often so each visit just turns out the most amazing food & drink & not forgetting the service which is beyond exceptional.You are made to feel so welcome here, lovely ambience, delicious food, fab decor & sofas to lounge away on after dinner.The good thing is this is not a pub so you won’t get those rowdy type of drinkers in there & this is a place to unwind & reflect & enjoy everything at good prices & a brilliant atmosphere.The owners are just phenomenal & humour that has you rolling with laughter all the time, my husband said “its like being in your friends house the way you are made to feel” & for that all credit due to what they have created & done.The place I know in the town has enormous respect & people flock here because of what it is and who owns it & works there, you will not find that in many places that is for sure.Thank you to everyone for just being such a joy to the town.

We had a family lunch in the Shimmers Cafe section of The Unicorn. The portions were huge and very tasty. A children’s menu would have been good. Would definitely eat there again.

We booked. Actually, we nearly booked another Unicorn Hotel in a neighbouring village by mistake, so make sure you book the one in Llanidloes.They just do everything right. Friendly staff, good choice on the menu, food served in a reasonable time, good quality. Clean toilets. Everywhere well decorated and properly maintained. You might want a slightly bigger portion if you prefer 'pub grub', but this isn't silly small-portioned fine dining either. My only suggestion would be to miss the pickle off the charcuterie platter, as it overpowers the meats. as they say on Masterchef, I don't understand what that is doing there.Might be a good idea to book.

Our regular place to visit now, the food is amazing with a Fusion twist & served by fantastic staff. Leave room for pudding though as they are literally to die for. This is the best eatery in town without doubt. Shame they have to put up with the rude tourists like below and the owner did a great job dealing with their bad manners, best thing for them is not to go back as this place deserves much better than the rudeness these people showed them. Keep up the good work Unicorn as you are all fantastic at what you do.

We were a group of 12 last week & everything was just perfect. Shame about the rude group who turned up with demand after demand who never booked but wanted/demanded food instantly. Well doen to everyone there as you are an asset to the community.

We were lucky enough to choose The Unicorn when we walked into Llanidloes from The Red Kite Touring Park. Had such a fab lunch ( Ploughman’s for my husband, the fish cakes for me), that we decided to return for lunch the following day. Lovely, attentive staff. Nice, little courtyard where we sat with our dog. Bathroom facilities clean and bright. Inside the Unicorn Hotel is of a very high standard. We will definitely return. It was a real treat.

Absolutely fab little place. Take it from some Llani locals, you won't regret a meal at the Unicorn. The food is fab, friendly service and HUGE and varied dessert menu! So glad it's on our doorstep. Keep it up team Unicorn

We are staying at the local touring park and ventured down the hill this morning in search of our first meal of the day. Chose The Unicorn mainly as it looks lovely and serves breakfast until 11.30am. It certainly didn’t disappoint. Quality ingredients, cooked extremely well and served with a smile. Generous amount of butter with the toast, large glasses of orange juice and the biggest pot of tea for two I’ve seen in a long time. Excellent value we felt and would most certainly visit again if in the area.

We have eaten here twice last week while on holiday in the area, lunch was great and the evening meal was excellent, we had the beef brisket and cod father, great blue burger buns and the cakes are 10/10.The staff we so attentive and the owners went out of there way to make sure we were happy and can’t wait till September when we are back up again.

Our first visit for dinner won’t be our last. The food was delicious and the chef makes ‘fusion’ food - a hint of the east for my main course. Only complaint was my inability to eat all of it but they gave me a doggie bag. Next time I will make room for pudding as even a half portion was more than I could eat! I hope all my complaints give the correct impression. Our host was good fun and I look forward to our next visit.

Myself and my husband visited for Sunday lunch; we found the staff extremely welcoming and helpful and the service was really prompt. The food itself was excellent, really tasty and the range of delicious puddings on offer was amazing! Would heartily recommend

Food was good the staff and owners were so friendly and welcoming.We arrived expecting to be told there were fully booked. We sat outside as we had our dog with us but the area was lovely and everyone was really welcoming and the food was lovely we all had something different and everyone was presented nicely and tasted great. I stayed here for a couple of nights, beds were comfy, rooms warm and hospitality perfect. A great cooked breakfast too.

We had a great meal at the Unicorn. Good choice of vegetarian options and delicious vegetables from their allotment! The staff were really friendly and the atmosphere was really nice, very comfortable. I'd recommend booking ahead but we turned up and managed to get a table.

Sorry to be the first “average” review of this establishment but that is what it was in my view. Very pleasant staff and attentive service. Vegetable soup fine as was the pate with toast and salad. Plain salmon mains with hollandaise sauce with veg (green beans, carrots and dauphinoise spuds). Best was the rhubarb crumble and ice cream.

Very nice staff. Room was really nice. Clean and wee presented. We were part of a small group who were the only ones staying so it was very relaxed. Just what I like. Only down side is parking, but you easily find space in the street or by the church.

Broke our journey here and had an excellent lunch - Brie and Bacon Panini was great with plenty of bacon!

We had reservations for dinner at this restaurant, but when we walked in, we were told that they were closed. And, they weren't gracious when they told us they weren't open. I had made reservations on the web one week prior to visiting Llanidloes, but I think they should've told us they weren't operating. (We were told that their cook had quit a few weeks ago by another restaurant.)

We arrived at 9.30 after a long day working and had a lovely welcome ,we had four vegetarians with us and one meat eater ,the menu is fairly small but appealing ,we all had the vegetable soup to start and wow ! What a great soup full of taste and plentiful ,our meat eater chose the steak and was very impressed ,the rest of us had the spinach and ricotta cannoloni which was very tasty ,for sweets we had honeycomb cheesecake and apple and blackberry crumble which were really nice ,very impressed with the service ,the young waitress bantered with us and made us very welcom

A lovely meal in this hotel restaurant, so nice it's a shame it's not open to non-residents every night. You won't find better in Llanidloes.

Went here for a roast once the portions were impressive and the yorkshires delicious, just needs ot get its licence back because the unused bar seems to take up space

Nos aconsejaron ir aquí, después de pasar el día en centro de Gales centro de los caminos y no nos decepcionó.

Nos hemos alojado aquí varias veces y cada vez que el servicio, amable, pero profesional nos mantiene volver. La comida es preparada con un alto nivel de calidad, requisito dietético especial s atendidos. Las habitaciones están cómodamente amuebladas y hay fantásticas vistas a las montañas. Esta es una buena base para explorar Gales meda y personal tienen buen conocimiento local.

Visited here after staying at Trewethen lodges for a relaxing weekend, walked into caersws and had lunch at the unicorn as recommended by Ann at Trewethen lodges, lovely food and very friendly staff!

Our party of 5 stayed 2 nights at The Unicorn Hotel. All the staff were excellent, efficient and friendly. The bed was comfortable and an excellent nights sleep was atchieved. Although we only eat breakfast at the hotel we could not have asked for better. Good wholesome food friendly staff and extra toast tea or coffee always available.

Fantastic night at the Unicorn. The staff were very welcoming and attentive resulting in the service being excellent. The food was lovely and everyone in our group of 14 enjoyed there meal. The cost was good my bill for 2 with one starter 2 mains and one desert with 2 drinks come too £38. Next time I visit Llanidloes will definitely be going back to the Unicorn.

A warm welcome at a wet lunchtime in an extremely attractively furnished restaurant. The menu was unpretentious and reasonably varied. Service was friendly and efficient. Food was very good indeed — and very hot, always a good sign. Prices were extremely reasonable. If in Mid-Wales it would be well worth making for.

Had a couple of pints and a well-cooked steak, with chunky chips and a side helping of roasted Mediterranean Veg with the landlady proving most helpful as I'd accidentally packed a book I'd already read - so she kindly searched the hotel and came up with a couple of replacements. Can't wait to go back (when we move near-by), for another superb steak meal.

It was recommended to us and the staff was all very lovely and friendly, quick service and nice atmosphere. We enjoyed our evening there with friends.

One evening my walking friend and I called in here seeking dinner - at 8.30 pm - we were greeted with a blank stare so we asked "Are you serving food?" The response was quick - "You better be quick with that as the chef finishes at 9pm!" and two menus were lobbed, literally lobbed onto the bar in front of us by a man who I take it was the host / owner / proprietor. We politely scanned the menu and decided to quietly withdraw...A week or two later we called in asking for coffee and a sticky bun or similar - at around 6pm-ish - to be met by the same feller who responded to our request for refreshment by brusquely informing us that we would have to sit in the back lobby / hallway as he was "expecting a large group of people in 15 minutes". Amazing. I've been in eating establishments ranging from Michelin starred restaurants to dodgy fast food vans but I'm rarely met with the concerns that this landlord holds - he doesn't want to keep his chef up late and invisible future diners are more important than present ones making a reasonable request for the simplest fare. I understand that the people of this region are somewhat gruff, to the point and maybe lack the refinement of city-slicking smoothies from more cosmopolitan locations where such things as customer service training are rated as important but at least he is consistently inhospitable. In the hospitality sector I would have thought that nothing is a problem where a fair exchange is concerned.

I came here for Mother`s Day with the family and the meal I had was perfect. I had grilled plaice with vegetables followed by honeycomb cheesecake with a beautiful fruit accompaniment. The food and its presentation was first class as well as the service. The menu is extensive so it`s hard to choose! The ambience is so cheerful with plenty of light and comfortable leather diner chairs and everywhere is clean and spacious. The menu is sensibly priced for a meal of such excellent quality. I`m a discerning diner and whenever I think of a meal out I immediately consider the Unicorn. The evening meal I had here was fabulous too. Will be back soon!

I've been here in numerous occasions for meals with my family. I'd recommend the food, as it is lovely! There are a number of choices on the menu, I've enjoyed every meal here so far! :)

We would highly recommend The Unicorn !!! The food is wonderful, even for a fussy veggie like myself. Glyn & Hayley really look after you, nothing is too much trouble.The food is fabulous, (compliments to the chef !) Only downside is that we were so full we didn't have room for a dessert !

We always go to The Unicorn when my In Laws come to visit. The food is always superb, and the staff friendly and welcoming. Better food than many other, more expensive places in this part of Powys. Tonight, they were exceptionally busy, but there was no drop in standards or service. I would recommend The Unicorn to anyone.

We arrived on a Saturday night with no reservation, but we were still found a table. Service was friendly and prices reasonable. Food was excellent. I highly recommend this restaurant.

The room we had was spacious and very comfortable. Evening meal and breakfast were both delicious and served by friendly helpful staff. We have since been back for Sunday lunch while staying in Llanidloes and their roast is second to none.

Recently went to the Unicorn with 2 friends for an evening out - We had a great evening - Food was excellent couldn't fault anything - the desserts to die for all homemade - Staff were great felt very well looked after. The evening was extremely enjoyable and look forward to a revisit soon.

We dined here recently and the food was excellent - the calves' liver starter was superb as were the mussels. The steaks were beefy and cooked to exact request and the vegetables overflowed. The wine was fine. The menu is changed regularly, so there's always something new to try. I was the only one with enough room for apple crumble and cream, though we all had coffee and brandy. When the bill came it was as pleasant an experience as the meal itself. Thoroughly recommended.

Arrived without a booking but were despite a busy night, we were able to get a table. Orders taken early but had to sit on settee until summoned to waiting table. We tried to talk but found other customers very loud. Steaks were cooked well, mushrooms were very oily and Chips, despite a fancy description, were in fact very ordinary and not that fancy. It was a very light restaurant, and did not have the right ambience for a romantic dinner for 2.

What can I say!very pleasant surprise in this ancient historic town,Unicorn is spotlessly clean,staff very helpful & well mannered,food..could'nt fault any of the three courses,soup & pudding were definitely homemade and delicious,portions good,2 persons 3 course Sunday lunch,2 large Merlot,2 pints of Rev.James,1 coffee=£48.00.We would go again,well done&thank you.

My friends and I had the 2 meals for £10.49 offer and this was very good value. The portions of meat/fish were fairly small but to be expected for the value. The restaurant has a lovely decor and the staff were lovely and friendly.

We can't praise the food here enough.The starter was delicious and almost a meal in itself. My steak was cooked exactly as I like it, there was plenty of vegetables and the speciality potatoes were lovely.My wife had a home-made dessert which she said was 'to die for', I had cheese and biscuits which was, again, almost a meal in itself.Can't wait to come back.

We went to the Unicorn Hotel to celebrate our daughter's 18th birthday. The whole evening was very nice. Prior to going we had been advised about the menu and when we arrived it was exactly as advised. The staff were friendly and helpful and the meal itself was excellent (compliments to the chef). The whole evening was spent in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.I think it is an ideal venue for a special occassion and would thoroughly recommend it to everyone.

Food is great quality and well presented and at a reasonable price. Staff look after you completely and you want for nothing.

So delicious, the menu is truly gorgeous and we went on the Steak and Pasta night and it was the best meal I had on this vacation. Can whole-heartedly recommend the rump steak and I hear good things about both the chicken and ham pasta dish and the stuffed chicken breast in parma ham meal too.Lovely wine list and pleasant service.

Lovely decor and ambience, the young lady who waited on us was unfailingly helpul, friendly and a natural at service... but the food didnt quite live up to the price.The ham hock was too salty and the menu was heavily biased to all things garlic.. however the chips were really lovely

The restaurant is nicely set out with decent room between tables. Service was efficient and the food was very good. The food can't really be faulted.

I had a family lunch back in Dec 2011 and it was not a good meal, hard carrots, sprouts, so under cooked it was a struggle to cut them half cooked potato and no roast potato small sauces serving, soggy pastry, it was my idea to my family and it was an abortion, the place looks good but you have to back it up with decent food, it wasn't that busy so there's no excuse, have not been back since

We have been looking for a place to eat for a while half way between New Quay and Shropshire, as we often go to the coast. We have been struggling as Newtown lacks reasonable restaurants, so as soon as the Unicorn began to receive good reviews on Trip Advisor we decided to give it a go. We are glad we did, the restaurant, bathrooms etc seem recently decorated and are modern, classy and comfortable. We were greeted warmly, and shown to our table, after getting drinks at the bar. The menu offers meat, fish and veg from local suppliers, and everything we tried was cooked perfectly and well presented. I enjoyed a pidgeon and quail egg starter, whilst my husband had black pudding, peas, scallops and chorizo. The chorizo in particular was delicious, moist and fresh in comparison to some of the harder, fattier versions sold in supermarkets. We then both enjoyed stuffed quail, wrapped in bacon. There were 5 puddings available at £3.95 each, and I can heartedly recommend the lemon roulade, the meringue was perfect, crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle. Whilst we enjoyed our meal a family with young children were also eating. Although the menu seems quite sophisticated, offering pidgeon, quail, boar etc, there is a childrens menu available and the way the staff treated the children was refreshingly welcoming and inclusive. Some restaurants seem to treat children as a nuisance, but this was not the case here. We paid £55 approx, for 3 courses each and drinks, which I feel was very reasonable.The only slight drawback is that all the main courses are served with fresh veg, "unicorn potatoes" and double cooked chips". Unicorn potatoes are slices of potato baked in a cheesy sauce and are delicious, as are the chips. Whilst these went well with quail. I am not so sure personally that I would want them with fish, or that I would always want two servings of potato. However, this is only a small quibble and I did not ask what other options may be available. We will return, there are too many other dishes to sample !

There is a wide choice of food at reasonable prices. Just the place if you need somewhere quiet and well run.

Local Lamb cooked to perfection, absolutely great taste. On another night we had the gammon steak, we all eat quite a lot of gammon but we have never tasted gammon as good as this.

We took a mini-break to Wales for my fathers 60th birthday in February 2012. We pre-booked our evening meal at the Unicorn Hotel as we we're staying in a lovely barn locally. The service was brilliant, the owners and staff were very attentive and welcoming. We had a 2 year old with us and he was treated like a star and nothing was too much trouble. As for the food, quite frankly the best meal any of us had had in years! My father is a very hard man to please food-wise, and he was so impressed he didn't stop talking about it for days. Commendations to the service and the chef for an excellent evening!

Stopped off here for dinner recently - midweek so not very busy but that had no ramifications other than to make the service seem even more personal. A warm welcome which made us feel comfortable and a look at the menu made us think we might have made the right choice. Although not huge it was obvious that this was not the usual "pub grub" but that some thought had gone into the offer. We were not disappointed by the actual meal either; the "Unicorn" potatoes (secret recipe?) just added to the overall excellence.Although not cheap for a small establishment in Mid Wales we thought it worth every penny. Apparently the lunch-time menu is simpler and cheaper but also good; we'll be back to sample it sometime.

Excellent food at a very pleasant venue.Staff busy but attentive and very helpful .Quality of food was excellent with locally sourced produce .Well worth a regular visit.

We were here on a very cold and wet Wednesday in January for what the owners called "steak night"....and very good it was too. Excellent steaks with all the trimmings were enjoyed by both of us. Service was very good and coffee and drinks also fairly priced and good quality.Now this is nothing to do with the restaurant but this did seem a strange little town...sorry people of Llandiloes...The pub is hidden behind scaffolding so finding it is tricky...my sat nav took me up a series of alleyways as I tried to leave...the local policeman thought I was highly suspicious and stopped me and accused me of drinking! ( I hadn't by the way!!) Couldn't find the breathalyser so off we went to the police station ( with me following him) .... surprise surprise ...it registered zero much to his disappointment. Perhaps it would be easier to navigate in the daylight. Never mind he took pity on me in the end as a very confused Englishman and on my way I went.Please don't be put off the Unicorn though it is great! Thought you might like to read my little anecdote!

So great to find a pub that does a Sunday lunch for veggies as well as meat eaters and does not just give them lasagne or the horror of cauliflower cheese (not my wife's favourite!). Service was great as was the food. Will go back when we are in the area.

I'll keep this shortIt was a quick booking as we were being squeezed in at the last minute.We had to order our mains up front, which we did, admittedly it made us a bit nervous, however the food was amazing.I have the wild boar steak and delicious sauce and I was then treated to a white chocolate cheesecake with strawberries.The service was efficient and professional, and we can understand why this place was fully booked.A must if your in the town.

I have eaten at the Unicorn in Llanidloes both at lunch time and in the evening and have not been dissapointed. The food is simply great and the service is also good. If you can squeeze in a pudding I would as they are very yummy.
