Quayside Fish & Chips in Northumberland

Welcoming, friendly staff, impeccable service and extremely clean and tidy, food was absolutely amazing and not expensive, the only personal downside for us is that we're on holiday and live 3 1/2 hours away in Hull 😭but it's definitely the best chippy I've ever had. Highly recommend!

We couldn’t sit in the restaurant as we had our dog with us so joined the queue for the takeaway, my wife needed the toilet & asked in the restaurant if she could use the toilet & explained as we had a dog we were getting a takeaway, she was told no she could not use the toilet, I couldn’t believe this when she came out so I went back in & asked again & I was told no, so I said well if she can’t spend a penny I wouldn’t spent the £40 I was about to spend in there takeaway, will never be back !! Worst customer service I have ever had !!

Superb fish and chips - the best I’ve ever had. Highly recommended.

Called in for some dinner as we walked around Amble. Decided to sit in. Lovely friendly staff and the food was perfection. Fish and chips with a side order of curry sauce. Can't beat it.

Really expensive, Very small portions and most of the chips were scabby bits, brown & Green in colour, Handful of chips for adults meal. Tiny, tiny small sausage in the kids £9 meal deal served with small handful of chips and a cup drink. Family of 5 went to mcdonalds after as we were all still hungry. * But the fish did taste nice and the sausage tasted nice, but Seriously Small portions unfortunately, Can't comment on the take-away bit to the restaurant. 25/02/2025 We visited. I also Never leave un accurate reviews, as could be detrimental to business.

Complete rip off. £9 for kids meal, which consisted of 2 cheap fish fingers and a few chips accompanied with a cheap orange squash. Even charge for ketchup.

We stopped for a large portion of chips on a very cold day. The café was shut. We had our 2 Jack Russell's with us anyway. The chips were delicious. Freshly cooked. Crispy. Good amount of salt and vinegar. We shared the portion but I wish I'd had my own. Would definitely return when we're next in Amble.

The fish was ok. Fish cake was awful. Chips not nice. Was't cheap either

Just had a fantastic meal of haddock chips and mushy peas. The food was excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful. The views from the restaurant are an added bonus.

Harbour chippy was closed so decided to give here a whirl again….ridiculously small portion served by miserable people….never again !!!

Lovely fish and chips. But very overpriced

We had the "Special". Excellent value for money, delicious fresh fish, a grand pot of tea. The neighbouring table shared a standard haddock and chips and it was more than adequate for 2. Friendly and swift service.

Opening times on Google are incorrect. Turned up twice when it was supposed to be open and it wasn't. When we finally managed to find it open, the food was overpriced for what you get. Had a better experience elsewhere. Not the best chip shop in Amble in my experience.

Nice traditional chippy takeaway/cafe.

Quite simply the best fish and chips for miles around and certainly the best in Amble (with stiff competition!). Highly recommended!!

A great sit-in fish n chip restaurant in a lovely town. Great value too

Myself and family in a group of 20 were up at Amble on Sunday scattering my Mams ashes and reliving some memories of many holidays and time spent here. We planned on finishing the afternoon with fish and chips from here but unfortunately we were refused use of the toilet facilities for two small children under 3 before being seated (presumably in case we simply used the toilets then left?) Bearing in mind the place was absolutely empty I simply cannot understand the mentality of the owner. Needless to say they lost a sale of easily over £200 but after reading other reviews I don’t suppose the owner will be remotely bothered, sad memory to end a nice day.

First time there and were definitely not disappointed, very beautiful and well recommend anyone who visits Amble give this place a visit

Cracking fish and chips, the batter was perfect, the chips were bob on and the scraps were next level. Nice seating outside too . My dogs like the leftovers but to be honest they're weren't many as they were that good !!!

45min wait for a tiny cod supper, I don’t believe it was cod as thin, the onion rings were overcooked frozen ones, we won’t be back. Very disappointed

Chips were kanny but to be charged £13 for this is a disgrace. Just wait in the queue for the harbour would be my advice.

This is an awful fish & chip shop, avoid. We went the other day & wish we had complained, the woman serving was miserable and rude, the chips were clock cold. The fish was ok but the smallest haddock ever.

Sat in restaurant. Don't let children touch the lobster pots as they're sharp and don't put anything on the window cills. But rulesy. Food was ok but a bit on the pricy side. No swapping of specials eg peas with curry sauce.

Went in just as they were closing ordered a chip butty and large chips. The service was really friendly and chips excellent, no grease at all. We will definitely return

Our experience during a busy (wet) Sunday lunchtime service was completely different to all the recent 1* reviews. Fast, friendly, service, two generous portions of hot, delicious chips, great tea and coffee, clean tables and a spotless washroom. Well done ladies! Recommended!

The chip shop has a rule that you aren’t able to out your own salt and vinegar on? So they put it on for you. Ours ended up being absolutely swamped in vinegar and totally ruined by the amount of salt on. Couldn’t tell quality of food due to large amount of salt. Won’t return

We are frequent visitors and dont mind the long wait or mix ups with orders were not usually ones to complain but today pushed me over the edge ..... we go here every 2 or 3 weeks and spend about £70 we always sit outside as take our dog and he isn't welcome today we had my mother with us and she needed the toilet but we're refused as we weren't 'customers' I pointed to where we were sitting insisting we were regular customers the staff said that there was a pub across the road to use and that's what they are told to say .... I asked for the manager for him to come out and have the worst attitude he started to shout at me and I told him we were customers and he was breaking the law by refusing us access to the toilet (he has a sign on the door saying toilet for customers only) he said we were not customers I asked who the tables belonged to outside where we were sat as there is a sign on them for customers only which obviously we were as he now realises he was making no sense he shouted at me again and said I don't care if you never come back its my policy .... I started to tell him policies weren't above the law but he shouted don't come back as if I care as he walked away from me laughing ..... mistakes and long wait times can be forgiven but crappy customer service can't we will never return and I think the manager needs a course on human decency never mind politeness

Horrendous customer service directed from the Manager, no disabled access and having both a disabled customer who could only sit outside due to no access for a wheel chair plus a child needing the toilet after spending £70 on fish and chips to be told by the manager we weren't classed as customers because we only had a takeaway and never sat inside. I didn't realise quayside fish and chip were a seperate company to.....the quayside fish and chips??? I fully appreciate people who are not customers not using the toilets. However how can the manager stipulate that buying from the Take away section is not classed as a customer, when they are the same company, are connected and the food in the restaurant is cooked inside the takeaway and they have seats outside stating for Quayside customers only which we were sat at? Expressed to the manager we will not be returning here again after his attitude which the management's reply was * it's only £70 I dont care *but we visit here every 2 weeks which accumulates to £1,820 a year hope the owner reads these reviews and looks at your CCTV to see how appalling you are in a management position.

Abysmal service. Very expensive and such a small portion. The mushy peas the worst I've ever had. The staff of four were ignorant. I definitely would not recommend. There's so much choice of better places with friendly attentive staff.

AVOID THIS PLACE. Went today and will never be back. My mum ordered steak pie and chips, and chips with batter, (the lad seving couldn't work out the change) we were next in the queue, waited and waited to be served. Waited until after my mums order came out well the half that he had put through the till. This was a very small portion of chips and a gristle pie, i was going to order for five, but looking at the portion my mum got, and still not being served we walked out. I worked in a large fish and chip shop for years, and would have sacked the staff in here.

A clean and tidy restaurant. Tables clean/ not sticky. Good presentation on the food. Waitress was efficient and friendly. Didn't wait too long for mine & hubby's food. The restaurant full & buzzing which is always a good sign! 2 pie ., chips and ( peas, shared) 2 drinks and tea for 1 was £23. Not too bad on the price. All meals on the same size fish plate. Some Other items I think are over priced. Toilets clean. I would eat in the restaurant again if I was visiting. Great location.

Extremely disappointing. This was always our 'go to' fish and chip shop. But not anymore. Value for money was non existent. Most of the food was overcooked and dry especially the black pud and haggis. Ironically one of the young female staff members agreed with me but didn't even offer an apology when I complained. We'll never go back, all three generations of us.

Nice takeaway, expense but the cod was good, staff nice but prepare to wait as its cooked per customer, assuming its so not to waste any food at the end of the day? Next to the harbour, nice area to chill especially if it’s warm

The fish had no taste, black pudding was overcooked small chips had about 10 chips inside.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Awful service wouldn't go back, only ate out of desperation, food okay nothing special at all. EXPENSIVE!!! If you want a nice meal with good service go to the fish shack a few mins away looking at the view of the harbour.

We have been coming here for years since I was a child and now here with my children and my parents and oh my God what an absolute let down as we were so looking forward to it sitting out the front on the benches, the food was so dry and over cooked tasteless and the portions of chips were tiny so very disappointed as I will not be returning back .

Food was overpriced and the portions were small. Think they are making the most of a captive audience unfortunately. Better Fish and chips at Blyth beach or Tynemouth (town and Quayside) if representing North of Tyne coastal eateries.

Restaurant is lovely and clean food very tasty. But absolutely ridiculous rules customers sat outside a family of 4 eating food from the takeaway (same business) but the 3 yrd old child was not allowed to use the toilet as they weren't in the restaurant shouldn't make a difference when the family were eating from their take away

Staff extremely rude,would not go back

I am appalled at the service. £10.20 for Sausage and chips with 2 cans of pop. Ignorant staff, had to explain my order 3 times. People were jumping Infront of the cue and it was very noisy. Mannerism of staff was shocking. Get rid of them COVID screens!!!

Tried to sit inside but couldn't with dogs, which is fine. So sat outside. My 2 small children needed the toilet but were refused access to the cafe toilets as we were not eating in there. Spoke to manager but still just got directed to the public toilets a 5 min walk away. Disgusting, refusing 2 small kids (5&2) the toilet

So disappointed. Took my family as I had visited in the past. Staff rude, over priced and the young girl completely ruined the food by putting on too much salt. Why ppl can’t put their own salt and vinegar on is completely strange.

Food was ok but the queue was horrifically slow. I'm not sure if I didn't enjoy the food because of the food or the frustration of moving 10ft in 40 mins.

Wouldn't go back got cod and chips tasted more like pollock asked for batter got none and she killed it with too much salt too expensive £9.20 for a fish and £3.20 for chips but it costs £1 for a sm bottle of water ,and a smile wouldn't go a miss either

Best fish and chips by a country mile yes they are a bit dearer but you get what you pay for ,and the lasses are great , they see our car pull in and they put our 2 cod in . Please spare a thought when they are really busy and it's hot , it is twice as hot behind the fryers they are doing their best.

Family of 10, bought a takeaway to sit on their tables outside and enjoy the weather. My 3 year old needed the toilet and I went into the restaurant to be refused usage as we didn’t eat our food inside despite spending £70 with this business. Thankfully the awesome pub over the road (The Harbour) allowed my little one not to wet herself in public and use their toilet.

If your happy with a small portion for a huge price then go here. I was shocked in the tiny amount of chips put in a small compartment of a take away box.

My partner went in and waited for 10 minutes when it wasn't busy. She was totally ignored and kept being barged into by other customers.

Woman at counter was very rude and wasn't bothered to serve us, chips were covered in a heart attack amount if salt, the cheese turned into rock hard concrete almost imidiantly, the steak pie was cold wet and oily. Please only come here of you wish to get cardiovascular disease Xxxxxx

Lunchtime special of fish, chips, mushy peas and tea for £13.95 was good. The portion was perfect for us and not over facing us with too large a portion as usually happens in fish and chip shops. (Do you really need all those calories and how much is thrown away.) We ate inside, their taking the order was a little slow but it came quickly once ordered. Be warned: they charge 50p for tap water. Result was that we did not leave a tip.

The lady who works there is ignorant and quite miserable. Poor portions and sarcastic comments from staff. Would not recommend

We had lunch here a few days ago and were very disappointed. The party of six arrived around 10 minutes after the four of us. Four of them were given our order. They received an apology as two meals would be late. Not so ourselves. We asked if they'd given our order to the next table and that was confirmed but no apology. Three of us opted for the special but in fact it was a much smaller version of the regular with mushy peas and a pot of tea. People were complaining about the long wait for food. A very disappointing experience.

The fish n chips were nice enough (a little expensive) but the staffing was slightly off. Long wait as they also serve the connected cafe, the young staff members seemed to be a little lost in their roles. Maybe prudent to close for a day for staff training to get it right.

Just dead weird. Fish and chips were way tooo over salted. Ate a quarter of it and it was horrid. Really disappointed with the service as well.

Good Haddock & Chips however disappointed no rubbish bin outside the shop, customers were just leaving empty boxes on the bench tables which encouraged gulls!

Came here yesterday on our way home from a lovely weekend on the beautiful Northumberland Coast. 4 adults ( 1 of which in a wheelchair ) and 1x small dog Buddy 🐾 Dogs not allowed in the Restaurant part of the Fish shop which is fine, so we decided to sit outside on the restaurant outdoor tables and order from the take out side of the business, spent over £60 on 4x Fish and Chips, food was lovely, however, friendliness of staff behind counter was poor, no smiles, all of them looked fed up, like they didn't want to be there. 2 of us needed to use the toilet so went into the restaurant where the loo is located, immediately we were accosted by a waitress asking if we required a table, to which we replied "No thanks we've got one outside just using the toilet" We were told abruptly we were not allowed as toilets only for customers who eat in restaurant. We were not allowed in due to having dog Buddy, we spent over £60 at this business and were refused access to toilet by a rude waitress, spoilt our experience shame as food lovely, staff and business toilet rules are poor. Won't recommend or go back for this reason.

We came here today and were really disappointed. £5.50 for a fish fingers sandwich which was a bun with 3 tiny fish fingers that tasted frozen, and no sauce. Then nearly £14 for the 'special' fish and chips which frankly looked like a battered tail end and a handful of chips. Way overpriced for the amount of food you get. Received someone elses order at our table before we'd even ordered, and tried to charge me for someone else's meal when leaving instead of our own which was a tenner more. Staff seemed clueless, tables crammed together, poor atmosphere. Really disappointed, wont be coming back.

Paid £30 for two fish and chips, fish was mainly just batter, chips were hard. Then asked if icould use the toilet, only to be told you have to sit in the cafe to use the toilet, even though it’s the same company/ building. I had the dog which aren’t allowed in the cafe. Absolutely disgusting, seriously boycott this place!

Food was great, no issues there, but it concerned me that one of the girls serving had very long hair that wasn't pulled back while handling food and drinks. Unfortunately I didn't not get the opportunity to mention it to the manager on the day.

Fish and chips something to dream for absolutely top tier plenty of fish and a excellent portion of chips at a good value and a nice joined cafe to eat in as well 10/10

Worst fish and chips ive ever tasted, cardboard chips the fish was disgusting, £40 i spent and it went in the bin, i asked to use the toilet to change my 14 week s grandson, the bouncer on the door refused and was very rude, between myself and my family, we spent over £100, never again will they get our custom

Very very slow to serve people and a little disappointed with the disorganisation. Quite clean and friendly but still need to serve and move faster. Lots of parking and close to the beach and local services.

£12 odd for the worlds smallest fish and chips, staff are miserable most of the time and the queue takes way too long.

Stopped here for fish and chips on good Friday so we expected to queue which wasn't a problem. The food was OK, not the best fish & chips ever, fish was thin and a bit chewy, but we were hungry and it filled a hole. The service was pretty rubbish though, no pleases or thank yous, no smiles either. My daughter asked why the lady serving had an angry face. Whilst I totally understand working in a busy environment can get on top of you, when service customers a simple thank you goes a long way.

We both had battered fish and mushy peas which were delicious and piping hot straight from the fryer. Yummy and highly recommended.

Bought takeaway fish and chips today for £12.40. It was over an hour queuing, (not the fish shop's fault of course), but I was really disappointed with what we got. Poor value for money in my opinion

I would only ever leave honest reviews for businesses when they are justified, good or bad. This is the first time we ate here (definitely the last) as a family, 2 adults and 2 children. My wife and I had chips and a pineapple ring and the kids, 13 and 10 had kids meals, chicken nuggets and chips and cod bites with chips. The order was taken and our food arrived with the order incorrect. The kids meals came as double cod bites and chips, no chicken nuggets. So one was taken back and the nuggets and chips had to be cooked. The rest of us had finished our food by the time the nuggets and chips arrived, family meal together ruined. The kids meals are absolutely tiny, poor mites were still starving when we left and the meals were £9 each! A battered pineapple ring and a handful of chips £5.50 each. These prices do not reflect value for money at all, in fact I'd say it is a rip off. I know mistakes happen however, a meal together was ruined and I asked if a good will gesture of a small reduction in the £29 price and "unfortunately not" was the response. Just think twice folks before you eat here, plenty of better quality and value for money chip shops in Amble to be had.

Service poor, food could be better, coffee not available, pea’s cold, sent back , returned luck warm and watered down ( not funny) . Had to ask for cutlery after receiving food as none brought to the table. I won’t be back

Ordered spam & large chips Thursday (08 Feb 2024) Got home and they were Luke warm and had to put in microwave. The spam must have been sliced with a Stanley blade as it was thin & very greasy. They put so much batter on the spam just to make it look bigger. I ordered large chips and paid for large chips but l received small chips that wouldn’t fill a child. I live local and been here many times with no complaints but lately it has been below there standards and your not getting value for your money. If things don’t change they will Lose there reputation as a good chippy and mostly lose customers.

The worst customer service I have ever experienced. Dirty tables, two clueless young girls ordered food with drinks had to ask 5 times for our drinks. The young skinny girl told us she did not want to be there. Food was ok.

Ordered two fish and chips and a curry sauce as takeout. Paid. Had to ask again for curry sauce as not with order. Got home to find one fish and chips ( a handful ) , one fish no chips both fish was cold, dry and mainly batter and charged 26.00 pounds for the privilege. Wouldn't recommend.

Wanted takeaway fish and chips. Queuing system very disorganised. Lots of staff but took ages to get food. Fish was tiny although I ordered and paid for a large fish. Chips nowt to write home about. Wouldn’t bother if I was you as not worth the money.

Discrasful went to this chippy half an hour before its due to close with my two kids and pregnant wife. Got there the open sign was on went to go in and the door has been locked. I knock on the window pointing at the open sign lit up and flashing to be met with a shrug of shoulders and a shake of the head from a member of staff. We won't be going there again

Ordered 4 adults meals and three kids meals…. Brought all drinks out and even glasses for kids but would not pour the kids drinks until the food arrived!! Apparently the serving staff are not allowed in the kitchen! Strangest set up ever!! Don’t go if you have kids… unless you like to torture them

Called into the Quayside Chip shop as have been many times before, always been happy. but after today will never be back, not only were the prices extortionate the portions small, the fish was half fish, half batter which is not what i paid for. So we complained but were just told i should of mentioned it when the meal was served My Advice go the the Harbour fish bar 100 meters along the road Cheaper and a much better quality.

I have been coming to this chippy for years and have never had a bad experience with either food or service. I bought fish and chips bout a month ago and although food was delicious the member of staff was not. Today 8th Oct I came into the chippy. It was clearly busy with the cafe being full. However, I waited over 10 minutes just to be served whilst the assistants discussed who was working which shift, cleaned the front of the counter and ignored the que. A little acknowledgement would have been lovely. Then when the food came, I asked for salt & vinegar but it was so salty it was inedible and the batter was mushy - the batter is usually beautiful. A really disappointing experience from a place that was the best in Amble and let's be honest it isn't cheap. I hope these couple of bad experiences are just a blip and the service & food will return to its normal quality.

We stopped here for lunch on a Saturday, the restaurant was so busy we had to have a takeaway. They were very busy and a little disorganised but the food was excellent, the batter was perfect and the fish and chips fresh. The price was a little high for the position size but all round a pleasurable experience.

We thought £21.60 very expensive for 2 fish and one lot of chips as while the fish were freshly cooked the chips were cold and hard and thankfully there wasn't many of then. The staff only spoke to ask what we wanted and not very friendly at all. We will not be returning

Nice quality fish and chips £23 for haddock small chips cod bites chips and curry sauce a bit steep. One staff member was great the other rather frosty to say the least.

Fantastic cod and chips. Cooked to order for us at 4pm. The cod was big and the batter beautiful and actually stayed hot and crispy until we got to our cottage in Low Hauxley. Staff very friendly too And anyone who thinks £9.20 for a piece of cod is expensive needs to see what fishermen do for a living. Worth every penny
