Well-crafted cocktails, inventive presentation, so-so service, thumping piano & bass jazz, and ultra-swanky ambience & decor. This is where the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (and Ladies) would go for a night cap. Definitely worth checking out, but plan to linger a bit and savor each sip because the staff is definitely in no hurry. Sep 1, 2014

The google maps guide reported the place open, after crossing the city to reach it we discovered that it was closed. A disappointment

Back few months ago we went and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Really well balanced unique cocktails in very interesting presentation. When it re opens I will return and book the same booth 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Cool speakeasy!! A little stuffy in the basement but the drinks were good service was good

Amazing place and atmosphere. As a Negroni lover their Figaro drink is a must. 2023 update: I take away a star, used to be a nice and quiet speakeasy, last time I went there was a generally loud environment and also the choice of music was questionable... pity, I hope it was just the one time.

This place is a bit of a joke. Poor service, dirty and disorganised ambience.. music was ghetto grime I’m surprised they got some positive reviews, I think it must be from the owners themselves?

Really good cocktails, and the Mr Hyde cocktail is a revelation! The atmosphere needs tuning up though, but overall well worth a visit. Great Old Fashioned cocktail too. There's no food, so be ready to eat elsewhere.

Honestly I was pretty disappointed with this venue. I was expecting a speakeasy bar ie 1920s but the music didn’t match this - modern dance music? The decor was in need of attention - dirty lights, lightbulbs not working, menu pages came off in our hands. Cocktails also not good, mine just tasted watery. Service not great either, they were understaffed and they weren’t knowledgable - they didn’t have the gin I asked for but suggested another gin: Grey Goose… which is a vodka.

Not great. They’re in transition and accepted that the is in need of a revamp as there was a mould smell and the view we had was a door propped open with a jug of chemicals. Staff didn’t know what a perfect Manhattan is and as it turns out, nor did the mixologist. Then we had to wait 25 minutes. When drinks arrived, 2 not-so-perfect manhattans arrived that seemed diluted, too sweet and not great. They removed the service charge and were good about that but at those prices it’s not the experience you expect.

Drinks were not great. The espresso martini had coffee bits floating which made it uncomfortable to drink. Other cocktail was regular, nothing special. Ambience is weird. Service was good, nothing against that, however the place was empty.

The drinks are cool but the service and atmosphere could be better especially since it’s pricey

Cocktail was awfully strong and didn’t come with the things mentioned on the menu. Service was ridiculous and didn’t apologise for poor service.

Haven't been here since pre pandemic and it is just as good as I remember.

Staff was lovely, great people. But this is the type of place made for social-media addicts with bad taste. You come here to record videos of dry-ice fog coming out of tiny cauldrons or watch gunpowder sparkle while you all politely watch awkwardly. Very sadly the drinks themselves - as in, the thing you drink, not watch - were at best uninspired and at worst disgusting. I usually like experimental cocktails but some of these were just truly revolting recipes.

Excellent cocktails, ambiance, live music (usually smaller musicians come here), and personnel. In London ,it's one of my favourite nightlife spots.

Great cocktail masterclass sessions, innovative and interesting cocktails, and a really comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Should also note that Enzo makes an incredible Mai Tai. Probably the best one in London!

A little bit underwhelming for what I was expecting, the cocktails weren't very good for my taste, and also a bit expensive.

Fantastic little bar. Some interesting drinks, some nice, some not so, but lots to try and fair priced for London.

The setting is lovey but the menu promises excitement and craft, instead I had a tacky porcelain grenade mug only half full, most of it with ice, for a watery melon squash. There was very little care put into the presentation because I think the waiting staff just couldn’t be bothered. I have visited Purl 4-5 times before, and it used to be great. Now it doesn’t stand out.

Creative and balanced excellent cocktails. Cosy, casual and not too loud! Quite reasonable price as well.

Not too loud that you can't hear your date talking, but not too quiet that it's awkward. With live music, and varied areas fit for couples or large groups, I LOVED this bar. The entrance is a bit strange - you walk down a set of stairs in the dark. Once you get through the door, it feels like you've been transported into another world. The singer was placed right in front of the bar, and her voice was amazing. You then turn to your right and left, and see little caves with couches for groups of 4+. There's also smaller side tables for couples. Service was fast, and the drinks were creative.

Great atmosphere, ideal for a small group or a date. My only complaint is they don't know how to make an old fashion. We ordered twice and told them but still it wasn't good.

I had my birthday drinks with a bunch of friends. The cocktails were okay. However, the bill has been manipulated to overcharge. Several drinks paid were not ticked off the system. I paid about 50£ more for drinks none of us ever had. The manager has shamelessly refused to refund. Told me several times he would do so and that the head office would get back to me. No answer received despite 4 emails being sent. I would not suggest it, definitely not coming back in light of the manager’s excuses not to refund the overcharged amount. If you do go, please make sure that all the drinks are on one single bill and that you tick off yourself each paid drink as they will do whatever they can to charge you more.

Nice cosy atmosphere but they only had two staff on, one taking orders the other making drinks, during a very busy festive period. We were told no food was available (sharing boards of cheese and meat) because it was too busy but then food was given to other customers about an hour later. 4 of us spent close to 2 hours there and only had the opportunity to get 2 drinks each. We left because of the poor service and hunger.

I really wanted to give this place a good review, but quite frankly it did not stack up. While the staff were all lovely and attentive, the cocktails just didn’t hit the mark. The flavours just didnt work, and we tried a few…none of them had that unifying feature with 4/6 cocktails we tried having a slightly “off” taste. Insult to injury, everything is also overpriced for the quality/quantity it is. I would rather the cocktail place spend more time figuring out how to make a unique tasting cocktail rather than a cocktail that has frivolous gimicks relating to appearance.

Great location and decor. It really feels like a speakeasy. Great for after dinner drinks! The music was fantastic! If not for being with work colleagues, could of had a real dance party!

Nice location very speakeasy way. The rooms are in some shadows with vintage couch and armchairs. Cozy private tables, rooms. The cocktail list is very anonymous without character, we choose 3 cocktails from their signature, very lightly,Purl Spritz is a white wine spritz and white vermouth. That's it. Outbreak flames presentation, surprisingly, another one(first of the list, forgot the name, sorry) served in a "ancient" bowl with cubes ice, bot esy to drink. However the experience was good the only thing is the service, very slow, between take the order and when you receive the cocktail more then 20min. I will back? Not sure.

Online pictures are deceiving. This was a huge let down. Cold, soulless and scruffy. Women’s toilets were disgusting. Sanitary bin was overflowing and the staff weren’t interested in solving the problem. The bar was really under stocked for 8pm on a Saturday. We wanted to start with a bottle of champagne and they advised they only had 1 bottle left in the building. I had a signature cocktail that was recommended by the barman as their best. It was the Mr Hyde. I’m a smokey, strong spirits fan but this was not drinkable. The Smoke flavour had a chemical taste to it. Almost like burnt plastic. I also tried to arrange before our arrival for some special welcome drinks for a friends birthday (that I would obviously pay for) and my requests were pushed around and eventually ignored. When I asked in person the response was they were never informed of anything. Big let down especially as the pictures look so good and classy. I expect these pictures were taken several years ago when the bar was in a decent condition and drinks were prepared to a decent standard. Unfortunately, it’s now quite run down and the drinks are lacklustre

Horrible place that does not pay its staff. I worked here for a few weeks and after requesting the bar manager multiple times to pay me, I never received any payment (when the payments were supposed to be weekly). Later he completely ghosted me! Even the drinks are over priced and staff is under payed. There are much better bars out there. If you care

This is a really quirky, fun speakeasy themed bar. I would have given it 5 stars, if it wasn't for The Joker drink. This drink entails a LARGE balloon bursting. Some people, like myself, are extremely phobic and can't handle sudden, loud noises. Its also a very unclassy drink, and this seemed like a classy place. I was very pleaaed to hear that the balloon machine wasn't working the day we went, as it brings down the integrity and vibe of the bar, however I HAVE experienced this horrible loud noise when I have visited in the past. Also neurodivergent people should be allowed to visit bars despite their differing sensitivities and needs. You should really, strongly consider removing the bursting balloon aspect of this drink as I will not be coming back mainly for the sudden loud noise reason.

Great bar with lots of separate areas for drinks where it's nice and quiet and feels completely private for your group. Can get quite warm towards the back of the cellars so just need to buy more drinks!

The owner was an awful bully at high school. I believe in calling out bullies and letting people know that they should not be supported in business.

One of the best cocktails in London. The sweetest bar tender and their manage Enzo were amazing. Highly recommend ❤️

Enzo Jamesz from entering the venue, you feel like home. If you are not used to a cocktail entertainment, the guys behind the bar will make your night worth living! The atmosphere is incredible!

Hidden underground bar in central london. Super cool atmosphere with comfy sofa in private room. Staffs were charming too. The quality of cocktail was okay, it was unique with the use of Japanese ingredients though. Good for business or large groups of friends.

Super cool speakeasy bar in London! Loved the vibe and the ambiance. The drinks are super cool with a multilevel sensory experience. The service was great at the establishment providing a lot of expertise in drink suggestions. The presentation of the drinks was awesome with very unique blends of drink ingredients. I recommend making a reservation here as it does get a little busy especially around peak times 🍸🍹🥃

delicious & fun cocktails with awesome staff

The service was poor and slow, they took ages to bring our drinks, we asked for nibbles twice and none of the members of the staff brought any. The cocktails were not great but the presentation was good.

Nice surroundings rubbish service. Group of 6 - order 6 drinks, with 4 of them being the same. 5 drinks arrived, with only 3 of the 4 that were the same. Get the basics right before trying to dazzle customers with the fancy cocktail tricks/accompaniments. Ordered more drinks, including a bunch of champagne cocktails. Drinks took ages to arrived. Asked for a bottle of champagne with 6 glasses whilst we waited - was told they didn't have any champagne... ...so what're you making the champagne cocktails with hmmm? Turns out they were making champagne cocktails with prosecco but charging the champagne price. Not cool. Staff took no lead in offering to resolve the situation. Finally negotiated a discount bill with service charge removed. Can not recommend this place. Place needs: more staff, better communication, better knowledge of customer service and how to handle situations when things go wrong. 10 DAYS LATER: Received a call from the bar owner gathering info. Purl still trying to get to the bottom of this bad experience, possibly. Response to complaint seems as disorganised as the drinks and service. PURL - contact me!

Lovely bar, great service and great cocktails! Great atmosphere, perfect place for a date night and catch up with friends. Special thanks to the lovely lady who was going above and beyond for unfortunately didn’t catch her name and her colleague Enzel.

Could not have picked a better venue for our cocktail masterclass. The staff were ALL engaging, experts and made us feel right at home. Thoroughly enjoyed all the suggestions and simply loved the vibe. Will be returning in the near future. Please give this place a try...so worth it.

Had a great experience on a ‘cocktail masterclass’ here. Lyla was amazing at sharing and teaching her years of knowledge with us; and such a lovely, welcoming and big personality who made it so much fun. The cocktails were fab and we stuck around for extras. The place is full of character and would be a great venue to take someone on a date. PS it’s not just about smoke and balloons / showey cocktails here - this is cocktail making at the top end for all the classics, and full of innovation with carefully invented infusions and recipes. Well done and thanks to the team.

More like drinking cocktails in a second hand furniture shop than a cool speakeasy. Place desperately needs a refresh - peeling paint, broken lamps, tired and split seats. The cocktail list was pretty mediocre. Really wanted to enjoy this place but sadly left with nothing to recommend about it.

I've been wanting to come to Purl for several years, but as a postgrad student, I've waited to indulge until a very special date. My partner was enchanted by her drinks—the Jekyll/Hyde and well-known balloon cocktail—while mine were presented without much flair at all. It definitely felt like we were at different establishments getting a different service. At three separate points throughout the evening, another customer drunkenly went to the set piano and played/sang loudly out of key to "Eye Of The Tiger," which was the experiential equivalent of a cold shower. Staff did nothing to discourage or stop this behaviour, which was a bummer seeing as we were seated in an alcove directly behind the piano and so were stuck there being stared down and very aggressively serenaded (?) out of key by a complete stranger. I so wanted Purl to be as magical as I had anticipated, but for a nearly £90 bar tab, it just was a complete let down. Drinks were tasty, but for all that, I wouldn't come again.

Took over an hour to receive our cocktails, and the server only checked on us once while we waited. The cocktails were artistic, but taste was nothing special at all- especially for the prices. Purl has a lot of potential but we didn’t feel it lived up to it at all

If my hubby and I could summarise our night here in one word, it would be: wow. We had our post-reception wedding drinks here. We spoke to Purl beforehand and organised custom menus with drinks named after us. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted straight away with a hearty welcome. We were a party of approx 20 guests, drinks were served super quickly and with excellent service. Everyone in the purl team was astounding, so friendly, quick to serve and just smiles all around. All the guests absolutely loved the cocktails (and mocktails) too. Our favourite was the Ball and Biscuit, which had a unique blend of flavours and really hit the spot! The decor and atmosphere were perfect, absolutely wonderful even down to the details of having an old fashioned piano downstairs and other cute items! We are so happy that we chose Purl for our wedding, and we can't wait to come back for our next visit.

Lovely bar, great service and great cocktails! I had my birthday celebration here and the service leading up to the night as well as the service on the night was brilliant. Great atmosphere, perfect place to have a lovely chilled party and catch up with friends.

A huge disappointment! Summary: mediocre cocktails at best, bad service and totally meh surroundings for Mayfair prices. Choose one of the many way better bars in the area. We booked a table for a Friday night after reading the very good reviews about this place but it was a complete let down. After being seated we waited for 25 mins for someone to take our order and then waited for another 25 mins for the drinks. When ordering, I discussed with the waitress that I like heavier types of cocktails like negroni, and the waitress suggested one that would be nice for me and that I can change if I don’t like it. The “innovative” cocktails was essentially a G&T which was completely not what I wanted and I can make it in 2 minutes at home. However, in the next 30-40 minutes no one ever came to our table to ask how things were, if wanted anything more and obviously I could not change the drink. The olives we ordered never came. We just paid for everything on the way out and will never go back. The decor reminds me of a students union rather than a cocktail bar with fairly expensive cocktails. It has been one of the most disappointing London experiences for a long time! We went to another bar just down the road which demonstrated how customers should be treated and how good cocktails should taste.

Terrible service! My fiancé had booked us in for celebratory drinks for my birthday and we had an extremely inattentive server who we waved down thrice to check on our drinks order with no proper reply or care of when we would get our order which ruined the start of what we hoped would be a wonderful night. We left after 50 minutes without getting our drinks- safe to say I wouldn’t recommend The Purl to anyone.

Terrible service, uncomfortable bar stools, overpriced, weak cocktails. The highlight was the look of the Boogey Flamingo cocktail but it didn't even taste of alcohol! Avoid!

I liked the “Not a 75” more and more as I drank it. I still don’t think it’s quite up to the classic. The amaretto sour twist was boring. Vibe is eclectic and varied depending on where you sit. Choose the right spot in the bar.

Really vibey speakeasy style bar underground. Loved the decor and drinks were delicious and aesthetic. Great spot to chat for ages while devouring their delicious cheeseboard with bread. Would’ve loved a few more snack options but otherwise it was amazing!

Love coming here every time! Staff is super friendly and attentive! I was surprised the rating wasn’t higher on google but I love finding places that exceed their rating. Dog friendly, but make sure to call ahead : )

Disgusting service. We walked in 30/9/2021, Friday night, 4 people, about 9:30 and they denied serving us because they said the bar is full. We had 4 empty seats right in front of us and there were 3 people working at the bar and the venue was far from full. The excuse was "we are too busy".. never have we experienced such a conduct at a central London venue.

Staff were delightful, they help you pick out a drink based on your tastes and preferences. Pleasant ambience, decor was simple yet comfortable. The place smells good, like they got some essential oils going on. Good stuff.

The waiter was quite rude and there wasn't much of a vibe on a Saturday night. I'm sure it's a bit better with a bit more atmosphere.

Went here last night for a couple of drinks before dinner at the Orrery. Cool little place, good and interesting cocktails but really variable service. One female waitress was brilliant but the other servers were pretty ambivalent. Given the way the system works - e.g you book a table for an hour, it seems to rely on quick and efficient service to give guests a fun experience and that wasn't really the case. Was nice but wouldn't rush back.

What a hidden treat. Always full of creative, delicious drinks (and staff to match). Full of wee nooks & crannies and beautiful seating areas, each feeling like it’s own little booth.
