I know the title might sound but we stopped for a snack during a circular walk from Whitehaven to St Bees and back. We just wanted a sandwich, which many places don't do on a Sunday, but the staff were more than happy. They warned us there might be a delay due to large groups in the restaurant. We asked for a chicken fajita, fully expecting a prepared cold wrap. What came out surprised us both. It was cooked chicken on a skillet with two warmed tortilla wraps. Its a shame we were only having a snack as the food was excellent. We were lucky to be able to sit outside as it was a very bright sunny day which made the inside look rather dark.

Had a lovely meal with my family on Saturday night, service was excellent, menu good and the food was absolutely superb. Between our party of 9 we had cod and chips, burgers, lamb cutlets and the special, pheasant breast. Clean plates between the lot of us, children to senior citizens. Then deserts the cheese cake and lemon posset were sublime as for the rest the main testimony I can offer is once again clean plates and full tummy’s. Thank you

Arrived at 7.50 pm, ignored by barman for 10 mins, eventually a waitress came over and we asked for a table for 2, barman then finally started to serve us drinks but then said no food was served after 8, despite website saying 8.30. A table of 6 arrived after us and had a food order taken, apparently because they’d booked, so food was obviously going to be served after 8!!

We were really impressed. We managed to reserve a table ahead of time and came to eat here after we had hiked up Scaffel Pike. The lady with the red hair who served us was really friendly and welcoming, giving us tips about the local area as she worked out we were in the Lake District for a holiday. The food was excellent. Brilliant sized portions, we certainly didn’t leave feeling hungry. The prices were very reasonable. Next time we are in the area we will definitely be back. Thanks again.

Visited here first time in years , got to say you have to give this pub a visit. From walking in the door to walking out you get that welcoming and wanted feeling that only Whitehaven people can give. The interior is classily yet rustic look. The staff are all genuinely friendly, and attentive without being in your face. The food honestly is as good as I’ve eaten anywhere. The cost is very reasonable and very much value for money. Great service, very friendly, happy and efficient. Lovely surroundings and atmosphere. We shared the Camembert, it came with crusty bread and 2 dips, a sweet and a spicy one, it was delicious. Main course we had steak pie, the meat was moist, the pastry light and crispy and the gravy was extremely tasty. The chips were great too, crispy, light and fluffy. The mash potatoe was fluffy and creamy, delicious. The vegetables were the perfect texture, between crisp and soft. All in all a perfect meal in perfect surroundings, couldn’t fault a thing, we will definitely be back

Came recommended by a friend and was our first time at this venue for Sunday lunch which we had pre-booked. Most of us decided on a roast, the yorkshire puddings leave alot to be desired and none were eaten, very heavy and stodgy, couldn't even cut with a knife !! The gravy was in globules !! Wasn't the most appetising chicken either.

Went for my grandsons birthday, I got monk fish, £15.99 not cheap. It came in 4 bits about 2"long, it looked like the bits that were left over. Didn't want to make a fuss on a birthday party so content them on arrival home. Was told its an expensive fish, I know this that's why I paid £15.99 in a pub for it. Has Sunday lunch there on the recommendation of the proprietor of the guesthouse. There was a choice of three or four roast meats; I opted for the beef.It came quickly and was piping hot. The portion size was very generous and there was a small separate plate with vegetables in it.Additional gravy and sauces was available.I accompanied the meal with a pint of fraught bitter, which was excellent. The proprietress (lady with dark hair, in a 'bob') is lovely.I did mention to her that the roast potatoes were slightly underdone and she said she would tell him (the chef). The restaurant is in earshot of the bar and there was sport on the TV in there. One supporter, obviously excited, swore loudly a few times and that could be heard by customers in the restaurant. It's a shame that some feel it necessary to use profanities on a routine basis- this is not a 'drinking man's' pub. At my local, Jane the regular barmaid politely asks customers not to swear and that is respected. However, this is a really nice pub, for a pint or a meal and I would certainly go back.Price for a Sunday roast- just under £10, but it's 'proper', no frozen veg, good portion size and tasty.

Recently had Sunday lunch with family whilst visiting. The roast lunch menu is great, catering for every taste, including vegetarian, and offering small portions not only for children, but those with small appetites. However, I prefer a decent portion and was not disappointed. The meat was tender, the Yorkshire OK although a little dry, the vegetables and potatoes were great. I asked for extra gravy which was flavoursome. Puddings were the usual offering but again, a decent size. Service was efficient without being too swift and the staff were attentive and friendly. As another reviewer stated, a hidden gem in a lovely location allowing for a good walk afterwards!

We arrived here in the middle of a 6 hour walk, we decided to have a bite in the "only pub in the village" of Sandwith. We were a bit worried as it was clearly the only pub in the village. Entering the pub we had mixed feelings, it was completely empty, although we did arrive quite early for dinner, around 5 pm, the tables and chairs looked dated and the ladies behind the bar looked a bit confused as to why we went in. We asked if there is a table free and if they serve food already, one of the ladies said yes and pointed to a table behind us to grab ourselves a menu (hmmm not too promising). We sat down and tried to take in the selection of the menu, the 8 different specials on a board on the wall, the 4 different Indian meals on another board and another board offering another meal on the side wall. We chose the cumberland sausage with mash and the steak with chips. The lady mentioned that the usual servers are on holiday so asked to bear with them - this explained the self service for the menus :-) And this is when the magic started. About 20 minutes later a series of plates appeared on our table. The 2 main meals (massive portions), a little plate of hot vegetables, a big dish of gravy, a small bowl of salad and some coleslaw separately as well. The stake was served with mushroom, tomato and onion rings as well. The food was absolutely superb and delicious! When we were ready to pay, the ladies had some difficulties in using the card machine, but by then we actually found it endearing, it was obvious that they were helping out, but their lack of experience didn't ruin our time at the pub, and we would definitely return if we were in the area! Stronly recommended! Do check the full menu though as the cheaper meals are at the back :-)

After a lovely country walk, we found ourselves hugely disappointed when arriving at the pub for lunch (which claims it serves until 2pm) at 1:50 only to find a very rude, unfriendly man who refused to serve food. He was then very slow and unhelpful in getting the drinks and no snacks were there to purchase. We then had to walk another 20mins to find somewhere to eat. Wouldn't recommend this place, it's not worth the walk and it lets the area down as people would think this is what it's like in the lakes, when in fact the rudeness appears limited to this one place. It would also be helpful if the listing on trip advisor actually spelt the name of the area correct!! On Easter Monday we walked around the beautiful coastal path of St Bees Head from St Bees village to the Lighthouse. This coastline is an incredible jewel not matched anywhere else in the North West of England. Cliffs with seabirds, RSPB hides, stunning scenery - it has it all. From the lighthouse we walked the further mile down the lane into Sandwith. The lovely lady at the farm even gave us a drink for the dog. By now, having walked three and a half miles and having left our packed lunch in the car we were all pretty hungry, thirsty and my sixty nine year old mother in law said she was shattered. On arrival at Sandwith we were relieved to see a pub that was open in the afternoon. We had arrived at the Dog and Partridge. We ordered a round of drinks from the very friendly landlady Janice and took our menus outside into the sunshine to choose something to eat. I had a pint of Jennings Cumberland. Delicious. For the lunchtime, there were "lunchtime specials" - meaning you could basically get whatever bar food you wanted for a fiver. From a hot beef baguette with chips to a gammon horseshoe with egg, chips and peas. Or soup and a sandwich - a prawn sandwich with homemade leek and bacon soup. As good English bar food goes, the specials could not be faulted in any way. The chips were amazing. I should note here that the evening menu is a more sophisticated dining experience, and the restaurant section of the pub is very nicely laid out. I would love to go back and try the evening menu some day.Now here is the part that prompted me to write a review here...Having been back in to order a few more drinks and chatting with landlady Janice each time, I had mentioned that my mother in law was feeling quite tired and enquired about bus service or taxi services back into St Bees, which was another few miles away. It was a bank holiday so the buses were no running and the taxis were on double fare. We thought nothing else of it and we all agreed it was not so far to walk having had a good feed and a few drinks. As I took our empty glasses back and said goodbye, the landlady picked up her keys and said she would run us into St Bees. This just goes above and beyond anything that can be expected from a pub. Janice would take a penny from us. I can not recommend this place highly enough. Family run, friendly, great food, great service, and in answer to the previous review - they even have the individual sachets of sauce now! Do pay the Dog and Partridge a visit next time you are in the Whitehaven area!

I have been here a few times and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the food!! It is delicious and nothing is too much hassle for them. It is a little pub with a warm cosy atmosphere. One of my snags about it is that they use big bottles of coke, lemonade etc. I prefer it from a pump. They also use bottled soda water. When I was last there I asked for vodka and diet coke, I was served it in a wine glass with a multi pack can of diet coke!! It didn't feel right drinking it from a wine glass! Another minor thing is that if you want any sauces, brown, tomato etc they come in a big bottle. I personally don't like this as I don't know who has used it before me, if they had clean hands etc. I am aware it may be cheaper this way but I think sachets are far better. Again that is just a personal thing for me, others may not be bothered about this!!Overall I really like the food here, the lady that works here is very friendly and makes you feel welcome as soon as you walk in. The menu is limited but is rather have a small menu with good food than a vast menu with average food!! I will defiantly go back!

The ultimate burger is worth a go; flavourful and a meat lovers dream. Portions are those of a feeder. From a business point of view, you could take 20% of the volume from each plate and they would still be generous. Can't judge the staff as there was a few lairy Christmas parties in that would suck your soul. They were harassed on the night but remained professional if not warm and welcoming. Will go back based on my first experience, just not at Christmas.
