What an unfriendly owner for whom everything seemed to be far too much trouble. They moaned all the time they were making our drinks & just about through it at us when they eventually brought it over after leaving it behind the counter while a member of staff was being chastised. Never going there again!

I'm not a cyclist and this is very much a cyclist's type of place, which is unusual for Hassocks, which is very much a White Van Village with caffs and pubs being the order of the day. In the past two years, however, this tradesmans' village is sprouting gentrifying wings with florists opening instead of nail bars - even the bookie has closed down. So, this mid-range, middle-class venue is to be welcomed. The service is exceptional, not least a charming local girl called Bethan and the fare is high quality. Cyclists can sit here and refuel on strong coffee and rich gateaux, while for non-cyclists like me, it's somewhere I can read the paper and have a decent breakfast. There's a cycle repair shop at the back of the cafe and it seems to have engendered a sense of community in its customers. As the subject line says, it's a welcome addition to the village.

I’ve been visiting Proper pretty much since it opened. My little boy who is nearly 4 has been there a lot with me and my wife and is in love with the milkshakes and cakes. The coffee is fantastic and the staff are so friendly and welcoming, it has a laid back atmosphere and is great place to hang out whether having lunch or grabbing a quick treat. It’s great for kids as the staff always make them feel welcome and as a result my boy feels very at home downing his milkshake and Oreo brownie in there! One of my favourite places to visit.

I have visited here several times recently to meet colleagues. There is wifi. The coffee and cakes are delicious if a little pricey. The only negatives for me are that the tables and chairs are all packed tightly together which makes for many awkward 'excuse me' moments and there are always lots of mothers and babies in there. Nothing has improved here, I sat outside & watched cake deliveries & bread deliveries - where was the home made element? They way things were displayed you would think it.I read another review about them using frozen jacket potato's - no oven then?I think they are trying to run the place like a pub, is that a new concept - its reminds me of when the costa opened & the place was full of people wanting to be seen, rather than going because something was special. I very much doubt I will revisit next August.

They take pride in the place, and it shows. Coffee is quite good. I was skeptical that a cycle shop/coffee shop would fly, but they seem to have hit the mark with everyone in the village. This is a lovely little cafe in the heart of the village of Hassocks in West Sussex. It's relatively small and combines comfort with modern aspects such as a place to use your laptop if you need to. Although there is not a huge menu (they have gone for quality over quantity) what there is always fits the bill (well does for us anyway). Samples of what's availabe include delicious panninis with different fillings (bacon / brie for example) and for me, the vegan in the family, there is a delicious bean panninni which comes piping hot. Most the panninis can be heated and are always really good quality bread and fillings. There is a variety of delicious cakes which vary and come in large sized slices and, again, which are of really good quality. The cafe is known for its top quality coffee - I don't drink coffee so can't comment but others tell me that it is, indeed, excellent 'proper' coffee with a variety to suit all tastes. The tea is lovely and they have soya which I drink. Hassocks is in an area which attracts a lot of cyclists and the cafe is run by a cycling enthusiast - they not only sell bikes but are able to repair them and have a range of biking equipment available for sale too. Finally, the staff - they are really lovely! Friendly, always ready to help, (no long waits here) and to go the extra mile ('scuse the pun). The only problem is that it is tempting to linger - whether you're chatting on the comfy sofas and watching the world go by or catching up on work stuff at one of the laptop friendly areas, or meeting other Mums for a morning coffee, it feels like home from home and ever so relaxed - you don't want to leave. Highly recommended.

For me an occasional cyclist, I can't see why I would have to go to a cycle cafe, do women go to women's cages & men to men's cafes?, should we have knitting cafes?I didn't enjoy the coffee, it had flavor but to me it was over roasted, I couldn't tell the difference between the cappi & the latte i had, both had the same amount of foam. The prices are a bit steep for the area particularly for food that I suspect is just bought in, might be the get the pastries in the sainsburies nexy door, but crispy sausage rolls their not, likewise the croissants. As a hangout for cyclists, it seems to be perfect, but its not the bees knees & not value for money, from my humble point of view.

But you can have your bike serviced, rebuilt, buy a new one, or just safely park it up while you chill. Dogs, children and muddy mountain bikers are welcomed all the same. They are all community spirited with bike rides, offers of help with cub cyclist badges and much more. Coffee + cycling, is there a better combination?! As a keen cyclist & a lover of coffee, the idea behind Proper Cycling & Coffee & what they're doing is very appealing & a little different to most of the other coffee shops out there on the High Street. The staff were all very friendly, welcoming & attentive to our needs. From the table service for food & drinks through to the bike mechanics who are more than happy to answer any questions you have on cycling & very enthusiastic about their cycling too (plus it's great fun to look at all the bikes & gear whilst you wait for your coffee!)The coffee is genuinely absolutely fantastic, some of the best I've had in a long time. Can certainly recommend the cappuccino whilst my friend raved about the double espresso, comparing it to ones he had in Italy many years ago. The barista certainly knows his stuff, and like the mechanics, was very enthusiastic about his job. For us, this is how coffee should taste... the cakes were also delicious.Proper have created a very welcoming & comfortable atmosphere for all people of different ages. We visited as non-cyclists, but was great to see people ranging from families with young children to bike groups all in the same place enjoying themselves. The collection of starter kid bikes at the front of the shop was very popular with the small children! They've created a hub for anyone with an interest in cycling to relax before/after/during a ride, watch a race on the TV & refuel themselves with some delicious coffee & food. You don't have to be interested in cycling to enjoy the great tasting food & drink, the friendly staff & welcoming decor - this cafe is great for all people. We will definitely be returning & almost certainly on our bikes this time so we can get the full 'Proper' experience & perhaps even join them on the shop organised bike rides!

The decor was lovely & so it should be, it was only open a week or two when we visited. The staff who took our order (possibly the owner) was extremely distracted by something going on in a back room. She was half listening to us and half to whatever was distracting her. She got the order wrong twice. All the time she was trying to take our order, there were three other members of staff just lolling about & chatting. The cakes were ok, but the coffee was far too strong for either of us.When another staff member cleared our table, they just said in a very casual manor, "didn't like the coffee then?" and walked off without waiting for a reply. All in all, a bit of a flop really.

Proper only opened in Hassocks about two months ago but it already has an enormous following from local residents and from cyclists who are looking for somewhere to rest awhile, have a coffee and to eat and browse through the range of cycles, accessories and cycling wear available. There is also a repair service so, for those enthusiastic cyclists who wish to cycle through the West Sussex countryside whilst knowing there is somewhere to stop, eat and carry out any essential repairs, this is a must. Now - I'm not a cyclist, in fact, if you get me on a bike I would need stabilisers, BUT this coffee shop caters for everyone! I've visited it twice in the past week! The coffee is great and the food is excellent. The cakes are to die for too!! What a great idea to combine a cycle shop and a coffee shop in one. I hope they will do so well they will consider expanding into my own village.
