Absolutely perfect. What a truly wonderful gem this is. Thank you so much for making an afternoon celebrating the life of my husband so completely pefrect. The buffet provided was gorgeous. All fresh and wonderful, including fish and chips, fine cheeses, sandwiches, pasta and home made scotch eggs (a favourite of my husband's) still hot and everyone said the best they'd ever tasted. Honestly couldn't have asked for more. Nothing was too much trouble. My heartfelt thanks to Rob and Toby fur everything. P.s. My overnight stay in the red room... so tastefully furnished and gorgeous.

A friend recommended the Prince of Wales while I was staying in Essex. It's a local with some fine brews on tap; the food was plentiful and old style pub food. You'll not confuse it with a gastro pub. Folks were friendly and we were able to relax and stay for a good bit before moving on. If you're looking for a traditional pub feel, this is a spot to do so.

A lovely Essex pub with several cosy rooms with rustic tables and chairs in the bar rather than one large characterless room. The walls have plenty of photos from the nearby WW1 airfield to keep the inquisitive occupied. The menu is a typical pub grub menu all reasonably priced and served quite quickly. The draught beers on offer did not include the usual choice of national ales and lagers, instead a number of local brews were offered. My choice of Georges Olde Southendian Dark Bitter @ 4.1% was very tasty. Certainly on the list for a return visit together with a visit to the nearby historic airfield and museum.

An excellent country pub with fine selection of real ale and good pub food. Strongly recommend the wide selection of real pies, no stews with just a puff pastry crust dropped on here! We stopped here and took a walk out the back past the old WW1 aerodrome.

Arrived to meet friends for lunch on Sunday. First thing that greeted us was the overwhelming stench of BO. The bar area was like some unwelcoming club that clearly didn’t want new members, barely parting to allow us to order a drink. Furniture looks like it has come from a school closing-down sale. After a while the smell drove us off & we left to meet friends elsewhere.

Prince of Wales pub in Stow Maries, we went there for lunch today but shame about their archaic views on children in pubs meant we either had to sit in a tiny uncomfortable dark corner with no room for a pushchair or sit outside in a ram shackle garden. Disappointing to say the least. And as for the attitude of the landlord ............. Only saving grace was the food was nice.

Just stayed here overnight for a wedding at the 3 rivers and have to say what a great place. The green room which we stayed in was lovely and super clean as was the bathroom Also have to say the breakfast was very nice and we were even offered a lift to the hotel to collect our car on Sunday morning We never had time to grab a drink in the bar but it looked a beautiful old style pub. Would highly recommend this for an overnight or short break. Rooms in the converted barn are a great touch.

We stumbled across this traditional old pub on the main Stow Maries road around 1.45pm, very hungry and keeping our fingers crossed. The aroma of fish & chips greeting us as we walked in. We inquired as to how long the wait for food was, as they looked very busy. 'Just the usual wait' turned out to be about a mere 20 minutes, tops. The fish & chips did not disappoint. The chicken goujons were great for the smaller appetite and perfectly cooked, not at all dry, just wonderfully tasty. All in all a little gem of a find. The food was great, the staff friendly, the portions generous. We will definitely be finding our way back there soon!

What a charming pub this is, brimming over with character & warmth, I'm a wine drinker & was surprised to see white Rioja on the wine list for the same price as the other white wines. The menue is superb, & as good as some of the fine dining places that I have been to for half the price! The service is good & the food very well presented. I did not stay in the hotel but plan to in the near future

This lovely little pub is situated just east of South Woodham Ferrers in a village called Stow Maries. They have a car park, garden area and covered outside dining areas. Food here is very good and our favourites include fish and chips or beef chilli. Real ale oozes out of this pub with many different types to choose from, not to mention belgian beers, wines and one or two lagers. The coffee is also agreeable. Nearby is the Great War Aerodrome making the Prince of Wales and ideal place to meet before or after a visit there. If you enjoy a drink or two, overnight accommodation is also available. Sometimes there are one or two musicians to entertain you or fireworks etc. When in the pub, unless you are about 1.7M (5.5 feet) tall - mind your head, as the low beams hurt when your head hits them!

The landlord then came and gave us some hot smoked salmon which he had hot smoked his self on the smoker he has just built and it was amazing , we then asked when it was going on the menu which he told us the follow week with a load of different smoked items being pulled pork as well , cant wait to go back to sample some home smoked food , just great to have this little jem on our doorstep .

A real ale pub with great food and a wonderful selection of real ales, if you're there in the summer try the Summer Lightening, a lovely light beer, not too strong and very refreshing. The food is excellent "pub. food" well cooked and fresh, I recommend the fish and chips very good value and goes well with 2 pints of "Lightening".

Dog friendly pub, happy for us to park whilst we went on dog walk as long as we came back for lunch which we were happy to do. There were 6 of us in all and five of us ordered food and we all had a drink. The one member of our group brought a sandwich with her which she ate whilst we all had our meals. My complaint was that whilst we were eating a member of staff came over and we were told that they did not provide picnic facilities and that only meals purchased could be eaten which is standard practice I know, but I just felt it was a little harsh. Had we all opened up a pack lunch (which we would not have done) I could have understood the staff complaining (and we were outside with the dogs). Sadly we probably will not come back which is a shame as everything else was superb.

We visited the prince of wales after depositing our twins at three rivers for their school prom. ( The King John Benfleet) Had a pobt of Oscar Wilde, nice. My wife a nice glass of white wine. We decided to order spme fish and chips. I'm glad we did. Lovely crisp batter, absolutely huge portion of cod, not too many chips. This was a good thing, it's normally the other way round. We both really struggled to finish the meal but it was so good neither of us wanted to leave any. Absolutely first rate.

My husband and I both chose the same off the 'specials' board described as: dressed Cromer crab, served with lemon mayonnaise, Belgian fries and granary bread. I imagined this being a dressed crab that came with a small dish of tangy lemony mayonnaise, some freshly made crisp fries on the side and a crusty hunk of granary bread. This is why we were disappointed in the meal: the dressed crab was indeed a dressed crab .... OK so far, but the 'Belgian fries' were none other than the ubiquitous frozen variety of thick cut chips, not even home made. Neither of us could discern any lemon flavour in the mayonnaise which came in a tiny paper cup - both user-unfriendly and very mean and cheap looking. The final insult was the bread. Not a nice chunk of crust granary but an already-buttered flabby slice of the nastiest cheapest white bread cut into two and draped on the side of the plate resembling something you get with your average 'builder's breakfast'. We asked the waitress about the bread but she said they were out of granary! Why put it on the menu if you're out of it and surely they serve decent bread with something else and would want a standby loaf in the freezer? Is this really the best they could offer as substitute? Not worth the 9.95 charged I'm afraid, and if they are supposed to have such a good reputation for food then I would have expected the quality and presentation to be much better than we had. Their website says "we pride ourselves on the quality ...... of our home made food" ..... nothing was home made about our meal hence the disappointing rating.

We visited this pub as a group and pre-ordered our food. We arrived on time but the conservatory had not been set up and had to wait a further 20 minutes before we could sit down. Then we had to wait a further 40 minutes before the food was served. When the food arrived many of us were disappointed with the quality of the food and it was not particularly hot.In particular the steak and kidney pudding was lacking in meat, the lamb chops were fatty and the whole meal covered in an unappetising gravy. The vegetables were not over cooked but not particularly hot.The menu is limited but appeals to most palates. The facilities need a good general overall and update. The staff were friendly and helpful.Overall the meals were disappointing.

This is a cozy country pub which is managed by the owner Rob who also does a fair amount of the cooking; I think that this makes a difference to the quality control, it's his baby and not just a business. The pub does it's own smoking of food and runs lots of different events such as comedy nights and pizza evenings (it has a wood burning oven). The food always tastes really fresh and the staff are happy to tailor a meal to suit your tastes. Aside from the real fires burning in the winter, it has a huge pub garden during the few sunny days that our climate is currently giving us. The pub has a good selection of beers and wines. The staff always seem to be sunny tempered and helpful. We've visited on many occasions and never had a duff meal. We've also stayed in the rooms on the other side of the courtyard and held a family birthday celebration here, proof that this is an excellent counrty pub.
