Primos Mexican Cantina in Hackney

I recently had the pleasure of enjoying some delicious food and drinks, particularly focusing on margaritas and a variety of Mexican dishes like tacos and fajitas. The margaritas were a standout, perfectly balanced between sweet and tangy, with a refreshing lime flavor that made them incredibly enjoyable. The salt rim added a nice touch, enhancing the overall experience. Whether frozen or on the rocks, each sip was a delightful blend that complemented the meal beautifully. As for the food, the tacos were a highlight. They were generously filled with savory meats, fresh vegetables, and vibrant salsas that brought an explosion of flavor in every bite. The fajitas, served sizzling hot, were equally impressive. The tender strips of marinated meat paired with sautéed peppers and onions created a mouthwatering combination. Served with warm tortillas and a variety of toppings, it made for a satisfying and interactive dining experience. Overall, the combination of margaritas, tacos, and fajitas made for a fantastic meal that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to indulge in some authentic Mexican flavors.

Avoid! Im not one to write a review but i wish i had not looked at the stars and read the reviews instead. It was embarrassing to take my friend to this restaurant. I left apologising profusely for the exorbitant price of a meal we hardly touched. As far as mexican food goes, it was almost like they had seen a picture of mexican food once and tried to wing it. It had no resemblance to Mexican food as far as i can tell. The wait staff forgot to bring out the wraps for the fajitas and then made an excuse as to why but the food was cold by then. The 'nachos' was a thin layer of corn chips covered in cheddar cheese, something i used to make after school as a snack. The food was soggy and i feel unwell thinking about it. We nibbled around the edges and then asked them to take it away. Dessert was a small step up, in that it was mostly edible. Then when the bill came out the service charge added higher than anywhere i had eaten before made this an extremely expensive and disappointing evening. I definitely wouldnt go back and i am not sure how the ratings are so high. I would avoid at all costs.

Don't order the burrito. It's tiny and comes caked in squeezy sour cream on top. Fajitas were great. Choose that if you have to eat here.

Good atmosphere, but the worse Mexican food you can find in London. Overcooked dry stringy chicken fajitas, chewy tortillas. How does a place like this survive is beyond me. Go there for a drink, don't touch the food.

"I was dining at Primos Mexican Restaurant the same evening, sitting nearby, and I vividly remember this situation. It’s funny how someone can complain so extensively after eating everything on their plate and then refuse to pay. I’ve been a regular here, and the smoky chili dip, tacos, and service are always top-notch. It’s one thing to share an honest opinion, but it’s another to take advantage of the staff’s politeness. Just my two cents as someone who’s actually experienced great food and service here!"

AVOID AVOID AVOID The lemonades and bottle of beer were the only items on the menu worth paying for, everything else was dire. Specifically: -The smokey chilli dip tasted like eating the contents of an old ashtray. Totally inedible. When I complained, staff told me the other patrons liked it, so I got up and asked the table of 9 next to us. They didn't like it either. -The chicken tacos were completely dry. No guacamole, sour cream, pickles or salsa. Just dry shredded white meat that was largely flavourless -The "birria tacos" were not what birria tacos are supposed to be. They were oily deep fried tortillas filled with flavourless beef and cheap cheddar that added to the greasiness of the dish. The birria "gravy" for dipping tasted like a diluted stock cube. -The pork tacos again had no additional toppings on the meat and were greasy. They were not dry but very poor flavour, and what you would expect from taco bell (not that we've ever been there- it would probably be better...) -The staff were poorly trained, and seemed clueless about how to deal with customer complaints. When I asked the waiter if he liked the smokey chilli sauce, he replied that he doesn't eat at the restaurant. Says it all really.

The service was good but the food was very average and bore little resemblance to real Mexican food. It would not be hard to do a better job at home with the added bonus of being able to play less cliche Mexican music. We went with a 50pc discounted deal through “The Fork”, and would have been much more disappointed if we had paid the full price.

Really tasty food and reasonably priced, we got the birria tacos and prawn fajitas which were both so good 💓 loved all the sauces they come with too. Staff were helpful and nice too, will be back for sure

The food was disappointing and overpriced. I got 2 birria tacos for £14.50. It's strange that 3 "regular" tacos cost less and the menu doesn't specify the birria tacos only come in two. There is much better Mexican food in London.

Unfortunately the food was mediocre and disappointing, but it was filling so did the job. The nachos were okay and guacamole costed extra. The tacos were just spicy meat, cabbage and onion slices. The cocktail I had was good. The service was alright. The atmosphere was lacking and much brighter than I remember. Dimmed lights make a nicer atmosphere. We visited here a few times over a year ago and the overall experience left a great impression. There was a different manager at the time though. I'm not sure we will visit again as we were quite disappointed. I appreciated that the gluten-free menu was still in place however.

We got welcomed really well by the staff. The food is good as we had guacamole, pork tacos and beef tacos. The pork was good but I didn't expect to taste a bit sweet. To finish We had churros.

Large portions for a reasonable price (the fajitas could feed 2 people and they were around £15!) The service was a bit slow when it came to bringing extra tortillas, small sharing plates, and any additional orders of food. The staff seemed quite busy, but at the same time really difficult to even make eye contact to order. Food wise, we got the guacamole, the sweet potato fries with mayo, fish tacos, and prawn fajitas. My favorites were the sweet potato fries and the prawn fajitas! The mayo with the fries was a perfect starter. The tortillas for the fajitas were perfectly soft, but kept it's shape. The margaritas weren't too strong. They were perfectly balanced between sour and sweet. Overall, great spot for a filling hearty meal.

I am from Mexico. The staff were not Mexican (I think they were Indian). It did not feel authentic.

Very average food, not really worth the price. Good service doesn't make up for the disappointing food.

Restaurant is pretty. Food is unfortunately mediocre. Guac was really nice. Bare in mind Guac comes with nachos so don’t buy extra nachos like we did and didn’t end up eating f it Had the fish and prawn taco, it was okay. Passion fruit Martini was more lime than passionfruit. Service was great, really lovely people. Wasn’t the worst food ever but won’t be running back here. MIGHT come back if I’m in the area and craving Mexican food.

Great 🇲🇽can restaurant. We visited it before an Arsenal European match. It an easy walk from Emirates Stadium.

Disappointing. Food was not good. Service was the bare minimum. I visited on a Tuesday evening with friends and we each ordered the beef/chicken/pork tacos. I think my taco was the driest taco I've ever had - so much so I didn't even finish it - the meat was okay but there was nothing else in the taco to balance out flavours or textures. It's looks were very deceiving! Paid half price because of taco Tuesday but even the £6 wasn't worth it Would not recommend.

"Mexican" food is not so Mexican, the tacos are basic and nothing extraordinary. Expensive beer.

I had a negative experience with a female staff member here that felt racialised/ anti-black. Me and my friend entered the restaurant (door was open) when it was raining heavily. She told us we couldn't come in because the restaurant was not due to open for 15 minutes. We said we didn't mind waiting and would order some cocktails (we were celebrating). There was a male server with her who seemed nice and willing to let us in but she told him no and gave us a dirty look. So we went elsewhere with our business. I would recommend Dilara (delicious food and lovely servers only a few doors down).

Good food but overly microwaved nachos

Been here a few times. Delicious mexican food. Friendly and helpful staff and good vibes.

We used to come here a lot but the prices have increased so much. £16.50 for prawn fajitas, which was 9 very small prawns and then half a pepper and some onion with 4 very small tortilla breads. Margarita was also incredibly small, and 85% ice for £10. The food is decent, but even with the cost of living issues, I don't think this is justified. I don't know why they have 5 waiting staff for such a small restaurant.

This place used to be excellent which is probably why the reviews are so high. We returned here after about 12 months and everything was average at best. Friendly service but they were very busy so not as attentive as we’d have liked. Food was ok, nothing special and definitely not worth the price. Atmosphere was pretty much non-existent. The music switched off just as we sat down aswell which made it worse. Definitely much better places to visit locally.

On a positive note, the service was polite and attentive, and the food was hot. Unfortunately, however, that’s all that I can say that is positive. The food was Tex-Mex at its worst. None of the food had any flavor at all. The “nachos” were a very thin layer of tortilla chips covered in cheese. It was flat and looked more like a pizza. The Birria tacos had so much cheese that any flavor that might have been hiding away was completely masked. We couldn’t even finish eating them. The fish tacos were just a piece of fish and a prawn, covered in thick flavorless batter. The chicken tinga, which should have come in a rich, spicy and smokey sauce, was just the flavorless pulled chicken that was on the nachos. I don’t like writing bad reviews, but this time I felt compelled. It was a celebration dinner for my daughter after getting her exam results, and she was not impressed. There was nothing remotely Mexican about this restaurant. It needs a complete menu overhaul, with less cheese and much more flavor.

A little confused by the high ratings. I never leave reviews but we were pretty disappointed with our food. Left there feeling like I could have saved some money and made better tacos at home. Atmosphere is decent and service was equivalent to the flavor in the tacos - non existent.

The brunch on a Saturday is great fun. The food is lovely and the bottomless margaritas are made fresh to order. The team there are lovely too. Highly recommend for a light hearted and fun Saturday afternoon.

We are here before a concert last year and thought it was some of the best Mexican food we have ever eaten, and we've been to Mexico several times! Excellent food and service, can't wait to go back again

Wouldn't recommend the tacos. I had the fish and prawn taco and it felt incomplete. It needs a sauce or something to balance the flavour and make it less dry. Was dissapointed to be honest. Cocktail was nice.

Really beautiful service. the food here is always lovely, but last night exceeded my expectations. I never leave reviews but it was honestly such a perfect service I had to rush on here and gush about it. 5 stars on everything and big shout out to Aishu who provided this immaculate service. Food, drinks and atmosphere, wonderful. as a mixologist, I never expect to be impressed by cocktails unless I’m in specific cocktail clubs but genuinely, the flavours, complexity and presentation Aishu was able to achieve has to be applauded, in such a short time too. And the food never ever disappoints. Recommend times 10. Perfect for every occasion.

Good all rounder. Reasonably priced and good selection of food and drinks. Nothing outstanding but a good, reliable restaurant.

Was okay. The girl serving us was very cheerful! The chicken tasted quite old like it had been left in a baine Marie all week. The cactus was not bad though! Too bad the chicken had this weird old metallic taste to it 😕

The mezcarita is the best one I’ve ever had ever honestly so good. The food is good too but the real reason I keep coming back is the cocktails 🤤 The staff are really cool too I really like the one with tattoos I’m not sure what her name is but she is super friendly

Highly disappointing, considering a bill of 46 pounds for two chicken tacos, two cokes and one guacamole to share. The bread was so floppy that it was impossible to hold it together and the toppings kept falling down — frustratingly. The chicken was dry and tasteless. Red cabbage and onions passable, but still. If you want a good taco, go elsewhere

Guac was excellent and a great start, but the burrito was bland. Also they didn’t let me have guac in my burrito even though I wasn’t having cheese and cream, which is usually a standard swap. Service was delightful though, but won’t be coming back. Expensive for what it is.

This is our third time here and we absolutely love it! The food is incredible, can especially recommend the nachos and tacos! Beautiful atmosphere and great service. We were served by Logan who is an absolute gem! So attentive and kind and anticipates all needs. Aishu has also served us previously and is great. Lovely restaurant, our new favourite!

Couldn’t recommend it more! Seriously unreal Mexican food, with an entirely gluten-free menu if you need it. If I could buy the man in this pic a paloma I would cause he started something so good. Wow can I start by saying that primos Mexican Cantina has a very nice atmosphere very friendly staff this is my first time coming here and I definitely will be coming back agen the food was amazing and didn't have to wait to long at all it a amazing place come and try it out for your self and I can assure you will not be disappointed.

Nice mexican food at decent price

Terrible service, we went there 2 people walking in everything was ok atmosphere was nice. Sat down and ordered our starters quesadillas which was the only good thing the rest was terrible tacos tasted off and the beans and cheese was hard and tasted very weird, waiters asked every other table apart from us if their food was okay but not once did a waiter or any staff member approach us. We felt offended because everyone was white and they got asked if everything was okay and there service was good but when it came to us as coloured people our service was horrible Even when bill came not a thank you or if everything was ok I didn’t even want to complain I jus wanted to pay and get the hell out of there never again. AVOID.

When this place first opened a couple of years back I was really pleased to see a more authentic Mexican place in north London. The menu was interesting with actual individual dishes that looked like they had some input from the chef. Went in last month and was disappointed to find they had gone down the "Mexican by numbers" route. Choose a burrito/taco etc, choose your filling, add your extras :( :( If I want this kind of experience I can go to Wahaca, or Chilangos. I can understand why it has happened (cost of operation crisis) but a real disappointment nonetheless. Atmosphere, cocktails and service still great. Could have been a 4 star if I hadnt known the previous menu, but 3 stars due to dumbing down of menu.

We came here on a Friday night. The service was excellent, but I can’t say the same for the food. Nachos were a pool of cheese. My chicken tacos were dry and tasted fishy. Fish tacos were mostly batter. Cocktails were good though.

Friendly service and nice atmosphere. Nice ingredients, just felt the food lacked real flavour, apart perhaps from the guacamole. I had the tacos, chicken tinga and sea bass with king prawn.

Arrived for the tacos. Stayed for the fajitas. Can't wait to return for the wonderful cocktails. Fairly priced.

Little restaurant with a lot of personality, sister of the bigger one in Covent Garden. Mexican inspired deco with rustic, bold colours and comfy seating. Sea Bass & King Prawns as starter. Tempura style, very well cooked and nicely presented. Main of beef fillet fajita, lovely cooked and the portion quite generous. Dessert of pastel de tres leches. The service is relaxed and the menu limited but sufficient for the restaurant. Good for groups of friends, the background music is pleasant and the volume allows conversation. Reasonably priced, the food is pretty good and the service great. Special mention to Christina, she was superb!

Service was brilliant and atmospheres quite good. But the food, it was not good... we order tacos, 4 people, all of them with very cold and old tortilla, leading to tacos breaking down while eating. Beef was just ok but didn't taste very authentic...

23 november 2023 I adore going to Primos Mexican Cantina, Finsbury Park. it´s one of those restaurant than seems to get better on every visit and I always leave amazed that I don´t eat there every week! The welcome is nearly as warming as the spicy salsa, great staff, fabulous fajitas, generous portions and ace value. What more could one want on a chilly night. Had a lovely time at Primos, good food and drinks and lovely vibes!

Food was delicious and there were different deals on (taco Tuesday, cheaper margaritas) which was good value for money. However, one of the servers was quite frustrating as it felt like she was rushing us to leave - she cleared away plates when we were still eating or chatting while snacking, and then rushed to get us to pay when the bill had barely been put down. Really put a dampener on what was a good vibe to begin with.

Enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. Quick and friendly service. We will definitely go back.

The food was amazing. We chose the guacamole as a starter, it was great and good quantity👌 We continued the dinner with some fajitas and tacos, personally I found the beef fajitas really great. Ofc, we wanted to end up with something sweet, we chose the tres leches and it was delicious! We are looking forward to come back. And their corona bucket is a plus. Pd: the music was great! 🥳

Authentic Mexico in N4 with great food, generous drinks and sombreros on hand to wear at the drop of a hat. We had a burritto, nachos and tacos and all were so tasty. Service was speedy Gonzalez and prices bang on the money. Without doubt my second best Mexican experience and just behind Salma Hayek's snake dance in From Dusk Till Dawn.* *Salma Hayek's snake dance in from Dusk Till Dawn is in my top 5 of all experiences globally so a tough bar to beat.

Authentic Mexican food in an eclectic restaurant.. The staff were great and helped to make the experience fun and memorable. Good value especially with the fork festival offer. Smoked salsa was unforgettable. Churros were amazing.

Was lucky enough to visit Mexico this year, and have to say I found the Tacos at Primos Mexican Cantina to be super authentic and delicious. The staff are also brilliant and the restaurant has a great atmosphere. 100% will come back, a real local gem.

Lovely place, we had a booming but arrived early, got seated right away, cold water to the table right away, really lovely little things like that. Drinks done right away, starters out quickly, mains too. Service was done with a smile, all the staff are great. The food is quality. And the portions are massive. Really good value for money. Would definitely recommend their pulled pork burrito

Incredible mexican cuisine! The food was phenomenal, huge portions and the service was super friendly and welcoming to us, highly recommend trying out the sea bass tacos and beef fajitas they were so flavourful and tasty! Will absolutely go back again.

Absolutely delicious! Each dish was prepared with care, they satisfied our palates. There was a nice atmosphere with music playing in the background, you could hear it but it wasn't annoying, even pleasant! Impeccable service, congratulations to all the staff and the chef. Food and drinks fresh - quesadillas and dos hombres mezcal the standout. We ate in the garden at the back that I’m sure would be buzzing in the evening. Definitely worth a visit.

Very happy my girlfriend and I found this place. Leslie, Akash & Christina were extremely welcoming and helpful in making out order, and the Mexican food was delicious. The nachos and the fish tacos were top notch, highly recommended.

I can’t believe this place has a 4.7 rating, must be mostly bots. They refused to seat us and told us all the free tables (90% of the restaurant) were reserved. When I always a walk past this place it’s full of white people, it seems like they don’t serve black people here. Avoid if you’re not a racist and if you’re black.

I love this Mexican restaurant, and so close to home! As an American, I find it a bit hard to find quality Mexican-inspired cuisine, and Primos Mexican Cantina doesn't disappoint! Anyone I bring with me also loves the place. The food is amazing, especially for the price, and the ambience whether indoors or out back is lovely for both quaint catch-ups or for a more festive occasion. The staff is always very nice and friendly as well. Don't forget to take advantage of Taco Tuesday: all their tacos at half-price!

Ate here with my wife’s friends for her birthday. Super lively. Small menu but everything you’d want from Tex-Mex. We drank Mezcalitas, which were delicious, and I ate chicken tacos, which went down a treat. My friend had fajitas, and I was pretty jealous of her as they looked great. Reasonable bill. Good fun.

A nice Mexican restaurant near Finsbury park. The guacamole is a must! Probably the best I've had at a restaurant, it had a nice tangy taste to it. My main was the vegetarian burrito which I was disappointed by. It was just mixed vegetables which were quite sloppy inside. Perhaps they could have added more rice in the inside to soak up the saucy vegetables. Not much beans inside either. The Tres Leches cakes was lovely and I highly recommend for a dessert. The door wouldn't shut automatically so would often create a small draft. The waiting staff were friendly throughout. I'd go back if I am in the area.

Lovely venue, even lovelier staff! The tacos aren't gourmet mexican - but we come back here a lot. It's good value and the portions are generous. Fab for a bite to eat as a couple or catch up with friends and family.

We went here for a meal because we were thinking of going to Mexico on holiday. Wonderful atmosphere, excellent music and decor, delightful waiting staff. The food looked delicious. However sadly we discovered that we don’t like Mexican food and it didn’t like us. We recommend this restaurant for anyone who wants authentic Mexican food is a lovely environment. There was a group enjoying a bottomless brunch and a family given crayons and a colouring in activity. A fun outing.
