Was advised by guests at another hotel that Powfoulis Manor did excellent food so we called in on spec. We had a freshly cooked 4 course meal at £35 each, generous portions and very tasty. The restaurant was immaculately clean and staff attentive. Will return.

First of all don't be fooled by the owner's initial chat. He led us to believe we would have a wonderful celebration there. It turned out he and his wife did everything they could to try and ruin it AFTER we paid upfront. The toilets are disgusting which they initially try to disguise with an air freshener but there is definitely a sewage issue. All staff are minimum age and owner is a penny pinching, snob with control issues. We were charged for decorating labor and cleanup and yet he just stood and watched as we did both all ourselves. While he complained and questioned everything. The opportunity to have "cut the cake" photos was taken from us because he told his staff to cut it up for buffet. His excuse was he has been "waiting too long" He refused to have our pregnant guest served a drink because he wanted our prepaid for wine used up first. So he didn't have to refund any corkage fees. Our fully paid for buffet was only accessible for 20 minutes and then taken away and never seen again despite people still wanting food. The owner stalked myself and husband all day nagging us about little things and complaining. He even complained a child threw confetti and threatened to charge us cleanup and a rose petal was found on the dance floor. Bedrooms are disgusting and not worth the price, definitely not updated in 50 years.

Setting: shabby bordering on dilapidated, terrible smell around toilet area, calor gas heaters everywhere (brought on migraine), freezing cold dining room. Food: soup was ok, stuffed mushrooms were tasteless mush; entrecote bordelaise was practically inedible (very badly cooked, overcooked but almost as though it was boiled, tasteless sauce) potatoes and veg boiled to death and horrifically oversalted; desserts were passable. Tried a slice of roast beef, TV dinner quality. Overall: one of my top 5 worst meals out ever, will never be back.

What a little Gem of a place! Yes the room are pretty basic, but that doesn’t matter, they’re immaculately clean and warm, the breakfast was excellent but the star of our stay was the food, 4 courses for £32 of really well cooked and prepared food, the staff were amazing and the owners were lovely

First of all i am the person who would only write good reviews to give praise were praise was due and always read the reviews. Totally disappointed with my first trip to this restaurant, when the meals did arrive my daughter in laws katsu chicken was pink and had to be returned and a replacement was brought, same again chicken pink. My husband had the the steak pie and must admit i have never seen mashed potatoes quite like it, though my fish and chips was good, the sticky toffee pudding was cold but reading All the other reviews must have got the chef on a off day. Family are rangers fans and it is a shame that the first time experience at the restaurant has let it down resulting not a return in the future. Would like to say that the staff was lovely though shame about the meal.

Me and my fiancé visited to try find out information for weddings and she was given nothing but grief from the owner. Clearly he does not want any business and it’s a real shame as the rudeness takes away from the beauty of the property. We would not book this venue and would urge others not to as well. 1/10

Visited here with family for lunch. 4 courses was around £17.50. We arrived and were sat in the lounge for a drink before we were taken through to the dining area. I ordered the pate, sweet potato soup, the fish and chips and the rocky road cheesecake. Firstly, the Pate was nice although it was a bit bland, the chutney was great but very little of it. The soup was really good and was served with crispy bread slices. The fish and chips was average, the fish was breaded (it didn’t say this on the menu) and wasn’t as crispy as it should’ve been, the chips were the same, rather soggy as if either the vegetables weren’t drained correctly or that the oil was old and wasn’t fried for long enough. The cheesecake was nice but not the best, was missing marshmallows so it wasn’t really a rocky road. The service was great however and the staff were very friendly. The others seemed to enjoy their meals so I think I was just unlucky.

Can I say PERFECT?I booked a table for Valentine's, and quite honestly I was more than impressed with the food and service. Upon arrival, our coats were taken and we were then ushered into a waiting room for pre-drinks. We were then given the menu and ordered, and in a few minutes, directed into the dining area. It had about 12 tables in total and felt really homey, comfy and intimate. The hubs even said that the roast duck we had was the best he'd ever had!We left last night with happy stomachs and in a food coma. What an excellent night!

Had lunch here for my dads 70th yesterday, couldn’t not fault it. My dad used to go here as a boy when they had a birthday in the family. He had not been back for 40 years. He said it was just as nice as he remembered. The setting is stunning, internally the decor is very traditional. Service is second to none with great attention to detail. The food was extremely fresh and just delicious!!! You can tell everything is made on site and not bought in. Just what we wanted for such a special occasion for my father. The whole evening was excellent - a lovely building, the atmosphere was great, the lounge was warm and cosy (on a chilly evening in June!) with its velvet curtains, leather furniture and blazing fire. Then we were shown to the restaurant, again a warm and welcoming room, with snowy tablecloths and sparkling glass. We chose from the set four course menu, which has a good variety of dishes, and the food was excellent, beautifully cooked and presented. The staff were welcoming and the service friendly and unobtrusive. A delicious meal in beautiful surroundings, what more could you want?

Dinner was served on time in a private, beautifully decorated, elegant and intimate dining room. Perfect silver service by extremely polite staff and exceptional quality food. We recently called in for lunch, having eaten here many times through the years. The reception desk was unattended so we rang the bell - two or three times but met with silence. After wandering around for a while we assumed that the hotel had gone out of business but as I see reviews subsequent to our visit I now wonder if lunch is no longer provided. There is nothing to this effect on the Powfoulis page.

This place is a bit of an enigma. We were here forty years ago and not much has changed. For some this might be an advantage – looking for a bit of nostalgia from a bygone era. It was a quiet night when we came, and were shown into the lounge. This large formal room is rich in gold and dark colours, and chesterfield leather chairs and sofas. Perhaps some lighter colours on the wall panels might give it character, which the turned-off calor-gas heaters and light-bulb lit fireplace failed to do.

Firstly, the access. It seems a long winding road single lane with no passing places so hope you don't meet anyone coming in the opposite direction! Gets a bit bumpy the nearer you get to the hotel.Secondly, the decor and atmosphere. Have been twice for lunch over recent months. On both occasions a total of eight dinners in the restaurant. This creates a rather surreal atmosphere. Thirdly, the menu and food. The set lunch menu offers four course fare at a reasonable price. That said the food is based on a menu that would be representative of the mid to late 1970s. Egg Mayonaise, Chicken Maryland etc! The deserts all come from a sweet trolley and consist of various cakes etc, a sweet trolley throw back to 1970.On our first visit the food was ok. Our second visit produced a nicer meal although "silver service" seems rather old hat now. Takes an age to set out the plate then individually place all the meats, veg etc. So all in all I am not sure how to rate this place. At one level it offers a rather fulsome lunch at a fair price. At another level it is so dated and staid it seems odd.It is open for lunch from 12.00 to 2.00. As the clock ticks towards 2.30 tables are cleared and you get the feeling it's time to leave (though that is never said).

Having been at Powfoulis for an evening meal before, I decided to meet with friends for a light bite lunch.Unfortunately there was no atmosphere as we were the only people in the bar and the food was barely ok for this type of establishment. Sandwiches were presented on budget pan bread, even the bread for the soup was a slice of pan bread. A portion of a more 'home made' style of bread would have enhanced the presentation, even a simple slice of a baguette.Sandwiches were very basic , no offer of dressings or sauces and had to request salt and pepper.Service started off ok but became a bit brusque. By the time we were asked if we wanted anything else we were preparing to leave. Had we been approached earlier we might have refreshed our coffee, but we had the feeling that we were surplus to requirements. On leaving there were no pleasantries at all.I've had superior light bite lunches in small cafes in the area. It's such a shame because there is the potential for a much better experience with the attention to few simple details. The building is interesting and the grounds look lovely but clearly not attracting day time clientele.I understand it must be difficult for staff to keep focused when there are only a few people in but that is the job, hospitality, and the service should be the same whether you have a simple lunch or a full blown evening mealFeeling very sad and disappointed about the whole experience.

Having dined here before it was a natural choice for our celebration dinner. Great location in the country side with what is a fairly imposing building. Greeted at the door by the owner we were taken to the lounge for drinks and to relax whilst making our selection from what is a very impressive menu. Once your meal is ready you are invited through to the dining room where silver service is provided. We chose the Table D'Hote menu which at £30 per four course meal is exceptional value, the meal did not disappoint, Everything cooked and presented beautifully, very attentive staff ensure the experience is completed to the highest standard. I chose coffee served at the table although we could have retired to the lounge for it and or drinks. All in all a great meal in a great location. One slight but not detracting downside is the decor does appear a little tired.

We were treated to an overnight stay at Powfoulis with our friends. As soon as you walk in the door, you get a feel for the warm, homely atmosphere. We relaxed in the fantastic lounge whilst perusing the extensive menu, my only regret was the the log fires weren't being utilised the night we visited. We were shown to the dining room, where we ate like kings. It could be said that, like the decor, the menu is old fashioned with many dishes from the 1980s featuring but when food is of this sort of quality, who cares! We stayed overnight in the lodges, which are clean and uncomfortable, if a bit dated. Breakfast in the morning was plentiful and of a good standard too.Paul, Anne and the rest of the team were absolutely fantastic, very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. We visited at the end of January as a group of friends, it was the first time any of us had been there. On arrival we were ushered into a large lounge with leather couches and chairs although these weren't the first thing we noticed, that was the overpowering smell of smoke coming from the fireplace ( tip: clean the chimney ). Other than that the place looked warm and inviting but on closer inspection just a bit tired and in need of a clean, I really wanted to hoover the curtains. Our food order was taken in the lounge and after 10 mins or so we were ushered through to the dining room and I felt immediately transported to 1979 with chintzy flowery decor and brown wood everywhere.I had the pate stuffed mushrooms to start which were lacking in any kind of flavour and the bordelaise steak for the main which was just OK, served silver service with two types of potato and two veg (yawn). I then had a cheesecake from the desert trolley which to be fair was very nice, my only surprise was there was no black forest gateaux ( which I love). All of this comes for £30 per person plus drinks which probably makes the owners a very nice income as it was fully booked when we were there, perhaps they should buy a duster or two.

We celebrated my Father's 80th birthday at the hotel last night - 12th December 2015 - with family members and extended friends with a diverse age range from 6years through to 87years and can simply sum it up by saying that a fantastic evening was had by all.Firstly in planning the event the hotel could not have been more helpful and accommodating with what we as a family were asking and furthermore they suggested little tweeks that from their previous experience of similar events would enhance the evening for us.Our reception and pre meal was friendly, courteous and immediately everyone was made to feel welcome and at home by the staff. We then were served a four course meal - silver service - in the restaurant where the food was excellent with a choice and selection that meant no one was disappointed and the service from an attentive and obliging staff first class.Post dinner we had the exclusive use of the lounge area where everyone was able to relax and enjoy the rest of the evening without any pressure in what can be described as a warm, comfortable homely environment - again the staff were attentive but not intrusive and nothing was too much trouble for them.In conclusion we as a family had a fantastic evening with everything we wanted from it catered for and provided by the hotel and their staff so a very big thank you to them all.A beautiful setting and a hidden gem that hopefully we will return to in the not too distant future and somewhere that we would highly recommend to others.

We were finding it difficult to get a B&B while the Rugby was on and were given this address. It looked rather daunting as we drove up and a little concerned about the cost. It turned out to be very affordable. First impressions were that we should have dressed for dinner, but not the case. We stayed for three days and cannot speak highly enough of it as well as Paul and his wife. I unfortunately came down with a heavy cold while there, Ann bought my meal to the room and supplied me with lemsip. When in Scotland again it will be a definite booking for us.The housekeeper also did all our washing and ironing for 10Pound.

Silver service, excellent quality food. Great atmosphere and more nostalgia than you could shake a stick at, this place has everything! To me, this is a trip back to my childhood, with food from the 70's and 80's. But please don't think of that as a criticism, Its old fashioned food done really, really well. The service is excellent, with the squad of waitresses arriving at your table to present your meal, then they disappear again. Only to magically reappear once you have finished. Deserts are presented on a trolly with what I can only assume are home made cakes and treats. Then its back to the Adam lounge for after dinner drinks as you settle the bill and await a taxi for the return home.Great meals out should be an experience, and this has it all. The value for money is also excellent with 4 courses coming in at £30 a head. This place is for you if you love a grand setting and food that isn't trying to be anything other than tasty. If you want the ultra modern, slick, style first type place, its not for you.

It was like stepping back in time & being served in Downton abbey The manor is very dated inside & smells of old cigars. However, this adds to the charm and ambience of the place. The food was absolutely amazing and great value for 4 course brunch. The waiting staff were lovely / kind / attentive and I'd highly recommend you visit here. This was our first visit and were treated by friends who use this venue several times for family gatherings/ Xmas parties etc. We're definitely coming back here guys

We have had the pleasure of eating in the Powfoulis several times and for special occasions. We love the surroundings, the food, and especially the service. The owner, Paul cannot do enough for you. Nothing is a bother for him or his excellent staff. The choice of food, which I believe is cooked by Paul,s wife Anne is superb. Cannot find fault with anything.

We were very warmly welcomed at reception. It had been years since we last visited. We had a seat in the lounge while we looked at the menu and had a pre dinner drink. The dining room is lovely. Old fashioned but perfect. The staff were all really great. Our dinner was fab! Four courses all delicious. Silver service with real man sized potions. Can't wait to go back! The hotel has a lovely old fashioned atmosphere.

We visited this restaurant at lunchtime and the 4 course menu had a great choice for under £15. The food was very good and silver service was a nice touch. The place hasn't been updated for years but it definitely suits the building. The place is spotless and very friendly.

Found the Manor only by chance when out looking for some Sunday afternoon lunch. Was not sure what to expect at first be came away being delighted with the whole afternoons experience. All the staff very friendly and very attentive. The lunch time menu is four course for £15.95 which we thought was great value as the food was excellent. Everything is silver service and then you finish with a great choice of desserts from the trolley. Yes there is a feel of the 70/80s but we felt that added to the whole experience. It was also a pleasure to visit a restaurant where the staff are taught customer service skills which is lacking in so many places these day. The staff were a credit the manor. Highly recommend and would fist again if we were ever in the area.

Time travel is possible! Set out of the way, the Powfoulis is a hidden gem for food with a menu which I doubt has been changed since the 1970's. For a steak it's the place to go, rib-eye with the world's best peppercorn sauce being highly recommended. And then there is the sweet trolley, laden with every pudding and cake imaginable, providing your imagination extends no further than Black Forest gateau, Rum Ba-Ba and Tirimasu. But honestly, the large drawing room and open log fire where diners knock back a swift aperitif is a real feature. One half expects the Lord of the manor to enter or perhaps John Cleese might be more appropriate. Service is polite and not speedy, which is good because this is an experience not to be rushed but enjoyed.

This is the best food and best service that I have had for such a fair price. I had crumbed mushrooms, toast, potatoes, cream soup, steak pie and gravy, followed by lemon meringue pie. The house is very relaxing, welcoming and has character, not too mention some great looking cornices. I would definitely return for my next visit to Scotland. Thanks for a great lunch.Bookings are essential.

What a strange, but odd place! And such a missed opportunity - this place could be outstanding. Very attentive, friendly service. Food was excellent if much too over - priced (over £100 for two, based on starters and main courses of a very tasty beef stroganoff). So what's the problem? As others have commented, this restaurant appears to be stuck in the past. Paradoxically, if it were consciously "retro" one would feel "in on the joke". However, that's not the case here. Instead, one gets the impression of a business hanging on by its fingernails, not understanding why the world walks past their door. And that's sad. The problem for them is, no one wants to eat in a sad place. Here's what I think they need to do:* Sort out the car park and immediate environs. First impressions count. Our impression was of untidy dilapidation.* Capitalise on their resources. They have a great building with a wonderful lounge that ought to be part of the dining experience: integral to their proposition. We'd visited previously and decided to go back and eat there on the strength of their lounge. We anticipated sitting, relaxing and being served drinks. It was closed. Only open at weekends, we were told - possibly. Instead, we waited in a corridor of an empty bar which had chairs and 1980's office - like coffee tables set out as though they expected a large party to decent on them at any moment. It felt functional. * Ditch silver service. Nobody cares about that any more. Go to any Michelin starred eatery and, like most modern restaurants, they will bring the plate to you already arranged. It's part of the modern dining experience. We were told at least three times Powfoulis offered silver service. We didn't care - until we saw the bill. Silver service may be a selling point for wedding parties and such, but not contemporary dining.* Upgrade the menu and focus on what you're good at. The current menu was an unattractive compendium of pretty-much every British dish dating from my youth! In addition to well tried standards, be creative! And try to reflect the contemporary definition of "British food".* Deal with the decor in the restaurant. It was like eating in a living museum. even the pepper and salt shakers reminded me of the 1980s!I write this with kindness. Because, frankly, unless someone gets a grip, I suspect this place is not long for this world (Friday night and we saw only two other couples dining). And that would be a great pity.

My much loved father passed away nearly 2 weeks ago and as this was his favourite place, we decided to have lunch here today. As usual, the food was home cooked and absolutely lovely. Yes, it's old fashioned but for me that is part of the hotels charm.Everything was too notch and we walked away with a smile on our faces. If you want modern decor and standard fayre there's plenty of chains in nearby Falkirk.

From the minute we arrived we were made to feel special. Unlike most places, there is no rush. We were shown into the beautiful lounge where we were served drinks and allowed half an hour to look at the menu. We were then shown to a lovely table in the dining room whist a waiter carried our drinks. The meal was superb fom start to finish, beautifully presented and again unlike most places it was served silver service! The old fashioned sweet trolley was just the icing on the cake! We finished our evening with coffee back in the lounge. Simply faultless!!

My local theatre group had organised their annual dinner for Powfoulis - they have been on several occasions and talked highly of their experiences. Before deciding to join them, I called Powfoulis directly to ensure they could cater for my dietary requirements - the lady I spoke to could not have been more helpful & even offered to make sure there was gf chocolate cake for my dessert! On arriving, we were escorted to the sitting room, where we were able to relax & chat over a few drink - staff were attentive but not overbearing & brought round menus with our set dinner options. I selected the salmon starter, cauliflower & broccoli soups, steak for main & the aforementioned chocolate cake. I pointed out to the waitress that I had called previously & she was aware and made notes beside all my options. We were taken through to the dining room where we had 4 well sized tables - no need to bang elbows! All courses were superb and we were all extremely full, even before desserts but the sweet trolley was able to tempt us!All in all a lovely evening with great food, attentive servers and good company.

everyone should visit this wonderful piece of history at least once, its remained unchanged for a lot of years & is a journey back in time for older customers, the food is top class & the service is superior to any other restaurant in Falkirk, relax at the log fire with a drink until your table is ready, & let the nostalgia of past centuries carry you away to affluent times.

This was possibly one of the highest caliber restaurants in the area in years gone so we decided to go for my birthday. What a let down. Building is really showing its age and seriously needs a fortune spent on it to bring it up to the standards of other establishments, it's clearly not been renovated since the 70's. Food???? Soup was homemade but I could do better myself, steak not even chargrilled, just grilled. Dessert...dated choice and poorly executed. Overall...just a complete let down given its once meteoric status. Extremely expensive, out of date menu and decor...service was pretty decent, but no atmosphere due to it being empty. Will not recommend or return...SORRY!

We have been here on numerous occasions over the years and we have always had great food and the lounge area with the leather couches and big open fire is very welcoming. Visited for lunch recently - very quiet so lacked atmosphere a little, but the weather was miserable so that may have put people off coming out. Staff were friendly, food was good (soup very good) and it was lovely to experience some old fashioned silver service at lunchtime. We stayed here, with our 2 dogs and 3 year old Granddaughter, for the night on a visit down to see The Kelpies. The Hotel building itself is a beautiful country house and the staff so friendly and helpful. A real old fashioned family run hotel with huge grounds which mean it's very quiet. The food was great and very good value. I would definitely recommend for those who enjoy a home from home feel in a lovely setting.

The Powfoulis continues to provide a wonderful dining experience which is seldom found in restaurants these days. On arrival you are taken into the most amazing drawing room where you can peruse the menu. The table is yours for the night so you never feel rushed or hassled. Deactivating your FB page after the mess you caused for many people on Xmas won't save you from negative reviews. Just shows how cowardly the management are of criticism. Hang your head in shame. Embarrassing.
