Amazing bar full of most unusual beer.

We went there on Friday 18/10/24 with my son . He loves the vault sour beers and was over from Canada for a holiday here. He had researched where to do the vault beers in Canada , (we had done the Edinburgh one when he was over before and we all Loved it ! The staff here were so accommodating and the atmosphere was fantastic!! Food so good and every member of staff was so cheery and welcoming and made our night ! It was a long way to come to it but so worth the experience ! Thank you guys for a great night ! Ps so sad it’s closing as we would have came back ourselves again ! Sad to see it go ! Below food wasn’t at this establishment ,we got chicken wings , chicken portions ,waffle fries

I can only describe Porty Vault as sour beer heaven! As I walked in the front door I was stunned by the the fridges on the right that were stocked to the brim with a wide variety choices - it took me a good hour to choose what to take home with me! If I remember correctly there were 24 different sours on tap which was just fantastic. Lynsey and Cameron were very welcoming, chatty and gave great recommendations. A must visit for sour beer lovers, I cannot wait to go back!

We came up for the beer school and I couldn't have thought of a better way to spend the day. Izzy was honestly amazing, made (what we thought) everyone in the group involved. She mentioned she had not been in the company long but her knowledge of the history of the company and all things beer was incredible! The hands on idea of guests creating their own beer is such a class idea, it really finishes off the experience on such a high and then the flight of your choice!! I would recommend this to anyone and everyone who loves all things beer.

Visiting Edinburgh from London and this was a must to visit. Niamh and Izzy were lovely hosts with great advice and notes on all the beers. When you visit take the tasting flights, 3 x 1/3 at a time, best way to work your way through what is basically an awesome bingo board! Also enjoyed the Chook (guest pop chicken food) mixed selection of wings and tenders - both absolutely divine! Such a good beer selection, amazing and friendly service and the food was ace too. Try the caterpillar - it’s very strong but it is an absolute must!

Incredible beers, if you're a fan of sours, you need to visit this gem

The sours and chicken here were spot on! Lots of different beers with a wide variety of fruit flavors. Some of them weren't for me, but anyone will be able to find a beer they like here. The wings were huge! Full sized rather than just flats or drums but the hot honey tenders were my favorite. And the waffle fries were so crispy! Lauren and Lindsay were great and answered all of our questions about the sours and helped us pick ones we all liked. Would definitely recommend!

Had an amazing time at the Porty Vault yesterday. I did the Tour which included a Sour School session afterwards. The tour was brilliant and showed the inner workings of the brewery and it's short history. The sour school was like being a kid at Hogwarts. Mixing different flavour combinations to make the perfect sour was fun. The beer selections are superb and the food looks amazing. I really enjoyed my time at the Vault and special thanks to our guide Izzy who was very knowledgeable. Thank you VC!!!

Second venture here. Myself and my better half decided to try the beer flights and food this time. I have to admit I'm a real ale man, but was more than willing to try the sour beers. I had the Iron Brew , Pear and the P.O.G( Passion fruit, Orange and Guava). My better half had the Mango, Coconut Concrete and West Coast IPA ( Guest Beer, very nice). I'm not fond of fizzy , sour drinks, but these beers are very very good. Staff were very very helpful. The food was outstanding, didn't realise this was a Nepalese pop up kitchen, would highly recommend the food. Would I go back, after a wee bit trepidation at the thought of a sour beer, most definitely, great wee pub, and looking forward to going back. Highly recommend

Fred's Backyard BBQ, the probably most overrated award winner in UK: Calls while mass of people waiting in front of street food station. 30 min wait for food worse than McDonalds in its worst days. Unfortunately Zero Stars impossible at Google.

Fantastic bar, with a great atmosphere, friendly and informative staff, and obviously an extensive selection of delicious sour beers. We also did the brewery tour that starts from this location. The tour was brilliant and ended with the opportunity to mix our own sours.

I have been a lover of Vault City for years. So was excited to do the brewery tour. It was fantastic and the tour was GREAT value for money. I know they’re movingt site so not sure how it’ll work. But the sour school was excellent, and even better that I won ‘flavour champion’ 😏 very pleased that the experience lived up to my hopes

Lovely/lively place offering up friendly service, good food (I had the Low n Slow sandwich-yum!), and a great variety of drinks. Great selection of sours, IPAs and more. Be sure to get here well before 7:00 if you didn’t make a reservation.

The masters of sour beer in a lovely setting with good food to accompany it. At the moment it is Asian food such as Bao Buns, I'm not sure if the food offering changes from time to time as it is described as 'pop up' online. Sadly I'm not local to be a regular visitor. If you know the sort of beer Vault City so, then you know if this will be your thing. They have a vast selection of their own beers with some guests as well, and a well stocked can fridge too. I would like to see cask beer supported ideally, but it's great for what Vault City do so well- amazing sour beer. Staff were super friendly too.

I was delighted to discover Porty Vault, featuring Vault City's beers and Bundits' popular bao buns. The staff were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. They weren't just friendly, they helped us navigate the extensive beer selection, even offering tastings to find the perfect brew. Speaking of brews, the beer selection is fantastic! And the bao buns from Bundits lived up to the hype – absolutely delicious. Overall, Porty Vault is a fantastic spot for anyone in Portobello looking for a relaxed atmosphere, great beer, and tasty food.

Fantastic selection of superb sour beers, in the spiritual home of sour beer in the UK. They also sell lots of other drinks as well, if sours are not your thing. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful and the food looked pretty good too.

We had an incredible time here Staff were welcoming and V V funny ! Food was great, lovely vegan options ! Lots of lactose free beers to choose from and got a couple of cans to take away ! Thank you We will be back 🎈

Big props to employee of the month april: Cameron. He hosted our vault city brewery tour and "sour school" where we could mix the base beer with all sorts of fruit puree and flavor essences. It was like being a kid in candy shop. Afterwards we got another flight off house beers which were epic. Cameron was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and cheerful.

Really friendly staff, v dog friendly. Fun quiz on Sunday and lovely food from Bundits at the moment. Loads of interesting beers to try. What more could you want!

Super fried cauliflower and crunchy delicious prawn in the bao bun. Such a refreshing change to get good fresh spicy food in Porty. As always the cocktail-beer is a hoot (blue, this time)

Beautiful place with awesome beer. 30 taps of which 18 are brewed by themselves nearby. The food was great too. I would certainly recommend going to this place if you have working tastebuds!

A great find. Food was fantastic. Staff could not have been more helpful in helping us choose beers. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Edinburgh.

Love visiting porty vault, alway some different beers to sample and the team are always friendly and outgoing, excellent!. (Haven't tried the food, wish the chef would wash his hands between putting scraps of food in his mouth, it's a bit off putting)

We visited the Porty Vault as it was a must do for my husband who is a massive fan of Vault City beers. We arrived at 3pm and were greeted by Adam the bar manager who was friendly and knowledgeable about the different beers on draft and in the cans. The variety of beers was great and we also had a burger by El Perro Negro which were fab. We stayed for a few hours chatting to Adam who was a great host. A must do if you love craft beers. 😁

If you love your sour beer, it's absolutely worth a trip out here. Catch a tram to the foot of the walk and then 21 bus or Uber. Bigger than wee vault. Staff were attentive.

Brilliant bar, the staff were so knowledgeable and friendly. The atmosphere was really nice and relaxed. Was very impressed with the huge selection of sours too. Also, chilli fries were delicious! Will definitely be back next time visiting Edinburgh! 🥰🍻

Excellent pub. I've been here a few times now, and have gone out of my way to do so as I don't live too close. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, the drink selection is great (LOTS on tap), and food is always banging. Top marks. 🍻

A great place to have some great drinks

Has been on my list for bar/breweries to visit during my stay in Edinburgh. The Porty Vault specializes in sour beer and offers a huge selection of those on tap. The list is complemented by some guest beers. Staff was super friendly and I was able to sample all beers before buying. They also offer flights, which is a fantastic way to get familiar with their beers. According to them all beers are fermented using a mixed house culture, so no kettle sours. I loved all the beers I have tasted.

Visited this past Saturday and was really impressed. My taste in beer is usually rather tame, but we were guided through the offerings by the very knowledgable and enthusiastic staff who offered tasters of their recommendations without us even having to ask. I found a few beers which I really enjoyed and had overall a great experience!

Wow - Vault City has the best sour beer I’ve ever had, anywhere, and Cam our bartender was exceptional. The flavour variety, creaminess, innovation and partnerships help it stand a cut above. Look for the beers with the L - they are extra fruity/creamy. Interesting how they use a similar base (similar to sour dough bakers) for all of their beers - it helps them release 3 new beers every 3 weeks (insane)! Don’t miss this place. Food looks great but wasn’t open yet as we came earlier in the day.

Been a long-time drinker of Vault City sours, and I was delighted to visit this taproom. Staff was friendly, the selection was phenomenal, and the location is great too!

Porty Vault had been on our list of things to do since it opened, and our first visit DID NOT disappoint. Ian who served us was extremely friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. We were able to try the sours before we decided on a flight. The flight of sour beers is a great idea, especially when you want to try multiple beers! We got a flight each and tried 6 different sour beers and ALL were a hit - our personal favourites were the Raspberry Lemonade and the Bubblegum Bottles. Would recommend to anyone, especially if you’re new to sour beers as they make you feel very welcome and there are a lot of great tasting sours! Can’t wait to come back again :)

This is a hidden gem that has something for everyone (but especially those of us who love sours!) and a menu that is always exciting and fresh. The staff are super and the atmosphere relaxed yet edgy.

A lively place with lots of lovely sour beer. The staff are knowledgable and friendly, and they are happy to talk about the beers and provide samples so you can make a choice. It's not cheap. I get that the beers are small batch and high quality, so it makes sense, but when some beers are the equivalent of £12 a pint it can hurt a little! Still, I know they are not intended to be served in pints and are not really meant to be guzzled. Also all the beers I've had have been really nice with unique flavours! I tried the food once. It was good, but a little bit underwhelming -- probably more of a bar snack to go with beer, rather than a meal. Which makes sense but I think they could lean into that a bit more and make it more apparent. The place itself is nice but very small and can be cramped. It's dog friendly, which is a plus. Overall though, I really like this place and it's a nice place to drop into for one or two half pints.

A first time visit and on my own 😳 Staff were extremely helpful and very friendly as I enquired about everything!! Loads of beers to choose from - their own and 'guests'. Great burger and a pint (well 2/3rds 🤔). Just a tad pricey for my tastes - but that's the norm these days ( must be getting old 🥺)

This is such a fun place for interesting drinks and yummy snacks. And it's not all sours: my fave is a dark stout collaboration with Mimi's Bakehouse. Delicious! We popped in with visitors after a walk along the Prom - the perfect refreshment stop.

Somewhere you just have to go if in the area, amazing choice of vault city sours etc.

These guys really know how to do sours. So many varieties, all exceptionally tasty. Probably tried about 12 different ones in the end, all thirds, which was a great way to sample their menu. Was a shame the kitchen wasn't open when we went as had heard good things about the food but the guys in there let us order in which was nice if them. Will definitely be back when I return to Edinburgh

Coming from California, I wasn’t expecting to find a sour beer brewer here, but after having one on tap at Inis & Gunn, we made it a goal to find this place. This is an amazing find, a Mecca of sour beers. Get away from tradition and enjoy their exploration of blended flavors!!!

Really disappointed, booked a table on the 26th March for today 23rd June to receive a call 45 minutes before the booking to advise the kitchen was "under renovation" and wouldn't be open, wouldn't have been so bad if we hadn't traveled from Newcastle, we were offered a discount on drinks as compensation however if we'd received more notice we probably would have gone to Wee Vault instead as its closer to Waverley where we were staying. Can't say we'll be back as its soured our opinion....

My wife, dog and I went here for food only, as I had heard good things and I seen that beef short ribs where on the menu so I was desperate to visit. It says on the menu that the short ribs are only available Friday & Saturday and it was Saturday so we thought we were in luck. We called to book a table and the guy on the phone was really nice. We don’t drink so it was perhaps a little odd that we chose to come here. The shop itself it’s quite small but it wasn’t overly busy. The service was good but could’ve been better. I felt sorry for the guy that served us because he gave us a couple of drinks to try then to realise we don’t drink. Slightly awkward but he was cool about it. he then went through the food menu and told us that they didn’t have any pulled pork or vegan smoked sausage but had everything else. We decided to get a medium platter for like £37 or something. We thought that was reasonable value since that got us 3 mains, 3 sides and 2 sauces. However, much to my disappointment, when we went to order, the guy announced that there was no short ribs. Surely this should be mentioned at the beginning? It wasn’t like he forgot to mention it because he also didn’t mention it to another table (sorry, I was eavesdropping). Tbh I get the impression they very rarely have it because there are no pics of it on their website or on Google. Anyway, we settled for beef brisket instead, alongside smoked sausage, paprika mac and cheese, potato salad, slaw, sweet potato bites, bbq and chimichurri sauce. It was quite a feast but we were hungry. They have an open kitchen which was nice but what wasn’t nice was the face on the woman in there. She looked absolutely miserable. At least pretend to be happy, especially in front of customers. The food didn’t take too long to come. The brisket was spot on - very flavourful. Smoked sausage was nice enough. The mac n cheese was fine but nothing special. The potato salad and slaw was tasty. I expected the sweet potato bites to be better. They were a bit soft and lacking crisp. The flavour was ok though. The sauces were not bad. Upon leaving, when paying at the bar I asked another guy when they get the short ribs in and he said he didn’t know and that it costs £4K to get in. Not really what I asked for and I feel that he could’ve gave a better response. This confirms my suspicion that they very rarely get it in and can only get it when they can afford it. What I don’t understand is why have it on the menu? Surely it should just be a special if they only have it now and again. Anyway, less about short ribs. Can you tell I biter about not getting them 🙈 Overall, the meal was pretty good, we felt welcome and the guy that served us was sound. A few improvements here and there this place could be 4/5 stars.

Stopped off for a quiet beer and grabbed a few to take home. Like the wee vault, but bigger, and with food. Hot wings are super hot. And tasty!

Absolutely brilliant! I’ve been wanting to come here since visiting the Wee Vault. The food was absolutely delish. Adam and Rebecca’s were both super friendly and provided great service. And we bought some beers to take home too. Reservation is a must as it only seats about 30 at a guess. Bathrooms are downstairs so not suitable for wheelchair users. Visited on Easter sunday. Great selection of beers and server was super helpful. Had booked to eat but was phoned well in advance to be informed that the kitchen was closed. Definitely will be back.

Disappointed in the service last night, our first visit and last. Not one member of staff came over to take our order, I had to approach 4 members of staff chatting to ask if we could order, same with the drinks. Food portions were ok for a platter but maybe too spicy for some. My husband liked the craft beer but not enough to return

Way more than Sours! Had fantastic slow cooked BBQ sharing platter here and it was truly delicious (the wings, slow cooked pork, Mac and cheese, even the sauces were epic). Portion sizes were great! I actually feel bad I've not been before as I'll definitely make this a regular spot to feast! People think it's 'just sour beers' but it's way more than that and if I was a Vault marketing person is probs want to quash those rumours. There's a huge selection of beers, wine, spirits and soft drinks. Oh also the bar man was extremely helpful and was like some sort of beer bible. We're very lucky to have such great places likes this in Porty.

A relatively new addition to Portobello High Street - opened in October 22. The Vault City Brewery has its brewing operations not too far from here. The focus is on beer sours. They have 24(!!!) of their own beer sours at any one time with about 3 new ones swapping out every month. Sizes range from one third to the two thirds schooner. Between us we tried 6 sours. Recommended are Blackberry Lemon Meringue Drizzle and the Rhubarb & Custard. Prices from £4.80 - see my picture of the menu board. Friendly enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff. Recommended. Have a huge selection of take out beers as well. Also does a range of barbecue foods for dine in.

Craft beers as nice as ever. Expected the food to be same 'Vault City' level of quality. Disappointed with dry chicken and pricey menu.

I love the Vault City beers, so was delighted to be able to go and visit their venue in Portobello. Slight atmosphere issue in that there was only me and one other customer in the bar, even though this was the week before Xmas. However I was there to sample the beers and started off with a beer "flight" with 3 recommendations from the bar man. All of course were delicious so I followed this up with another 3 as there is so much choice. If I hadn't already eaten I would loved to have tried the food which from the menu sounded good. If you like craft beer and are in the area give Porty Vault a visit.

Like a kingdom for sour beer. Vault City are the masters of sours and this place is fantastic to try a few. Definitely go the tasting tray route to tick more off the menu. The food was awesome too, we got the wings and Mac and cheese.
