Porto Douro in Birmingham

Lovely evening here,nice to have live music,in the form of two lovely singers! Food very good,and it was filling too! We had sardines and prawns for starters both excellent. Very traditional Portuguese,I had the hot pot,my partner the traditional layerd,egg,toast,sausage,steak,dish.As mains. Delicious chocolate mousse for dessert,was just enough.We also had a shit of complimentary port and Portuguese custard at the end of the meal,nice touch! Very pretty restaurant,pleasure to be in.The chefs can be seen working which is a nice feature. We will return.

Came here for lunch with my Grandparents the service was brilliant the food just as good!! Just filling enough portions were the perfect size me and my Nan had a seafood linguine they didn't scrimp on the seafood at all. They found out it was my grandads birthday and lit him a candle and sang happy birthday. And sent me home with these lovely custard tarts not asked for just offered out of kindness that i cannot remember the name of but are too die for!! Very good quality very affordable very friendly I highly recommend!!

The staff had an impressive level of control and were very attentive despite it being a full house and during peak business.

It was definitely not created for the Portuguese but for the English, I don't judge them because after all we are in England. They lost the Portuguese essence, the old restaurant was 1000 times better. The food left something to be desired, the dishes also lost their Portuguese essence, just like the rest of the restaurant. Bitoque without egg? The meaning of bitoque is to have the egg on top of the meat. Rabbit stew with frozen carrots... PORTUGAL DESSERTS? None.. Chocolate sundae? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Biscuit cake with a twist without identity. (Not even a single house sweet...) The prices? To get away... MUSIC TOO LOUD, to the point where you can't have a conversation. I'm so sorry, Porto Douro used to be the best Portuguese restaurant in the West Midlands, now? Now it's just another one

Disappointing Experience at Porto Restaurant I visited Porto restaurant for the first time on 09/03/25, and unfortunately it was underwhelming. The starters were mediocre—the olives were clearly from a supermarket jar. However, the biggest disappointment was my son's meal: battered hake with banana. It was obviously frozen store-bought fish, badly prepared. The batter was overcooked, yet the fish inside was still cold, suggesting it had gone straight from the freezer into an overheated oven. To make matters worse a banana was placed on top of the charred fish batter with some kind of sauce drizzled over it. We sent it back and were given a rice dish with bits of fish instead which was essentially just a bowl of tomato rice with a few tiny fish pieces. The manager initially assured us we wouldn't be charged for the poorly prepared meal, yet when the bill arrived the charge was still there. When we pointed it out he casually responded, "Oh, sorry, I forgot." It’s not difficult to heat up frozen fish properly and not something you would expect in a restaurant. On a positive note the two waitresses, Jessica and Sylvia were reasonable athough it would have been nice if a jug of water had been placed on our table upon arrival. Additionally, the music was loud and absolutely awful. Overall, it was a disappointing visit and neither myself, my son, nor my husband will be returning.

Waiter waltzed off half way through taking our order. The starter of bread and olives was extremely overpriced for what it was. The main course I had was cold and had to go back to the kitchen. The dessert was huge but under whelming. The atmosphere was too noisy. At one point the chef of one of the team stormed out, hi jacking the singer's mic part way through his song. Won't be heading back there in a hurry. Very overpriced in comparison to other restaurants.

Really nice variety of food and excellent service. Went there with my friends on Saturday and really enjoyed the food. Well done Porto Duoro! And also need to mention our waitress Elena that recommended us the signature dishes and the food was absolutely delightful !

My wife and I went for lunch. Excellent value and the food was delicious. Very nice team looked after us, we had a great bottle of wine and throughly enjoyed the occasion. Sorry about the half eaten food pics, we dived straight in! Forgot to snap the Sardines and the Calamari.

Packed out Saturday night when 7 of us ate here. Lovely place, but I think the service and the food suffered a little due to how busy it was. My wife has eaten at the previous place in Acocks Green and loved the food there. Would definitely try again though.

Busy lively atmosphere, very helpful and pleasant staff, owner took time to come and talk to us on a couple of occasions. The food was very nice, one of the juiciest steaks I've ever had.

The Bacalhau Porto Douro was an absolute treat! Packed with authentic flavours, the cod was perfectly cooked, and the garlic roasted potatoes were spot on. The fresh parsley added a lovely touch to the dish. The atmosphere of the restaurant is warm and inviting, giving off that charming Portuguese vibe. Special mention to Jessica, who took such great care of us! She was friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. Highly recommend this place for great food and fantastic service!

This was my first experience dining at this restaurant. The ambience was nice with the candles lit on the tables. We chose from both the main menu and also the set menu. The food was very very good and the portion sizes were really great! The main thing that made the evening extra special was the service and how attentive the servers were. It really created an amazing experience for me and my family and a BIG thank you goes to Chabo who was our server for the evening! We will definitely be back again in the near future! Thank you to Porto Douro and Chabo!! :)

Came to this restaurant with my husband and son, and felt very disappointed. This started with the waitress very friendly and helpful however wasn't able to produce a children's menu (no fault of her own) she did attempt to find the children's menu and spoke with a supervisor but couldn't produce one therefore she took a picture on her own phone and apologised perfusly. Not her fault though! (Also called prior to booking and checked that they did a children's menu which they said yes). Food was bland lack flavour for me and my partner who stewed beef and I had the seabass. Portion sizes were fair but left feeling disappointed with the lack of flavour, slighltly over on the fish, unseasoned vegetables, such ashame as this was on new years eve therfore lookibg foward to starting the evening with a lovley meal. Need to address this especially if targeting for a more fin dine experience in regards to the price. Have eaten at chain restaurants e.g cote, bistrot Pierre with better stands of food and is reflect value in the price. From a perspective of higher end price of food e.g Bank, I've etc no where near the same standards. Which is unfortunate as the setting or the restaurant is beautiful and staff were friendly but not enough for me to come back or recommend.

We were a family of four who dined here on New Year's Day in the evening. The place was quiet and food came out at a good pace to allow us to enjoy the evening. Service was really good and attentive. The restaurant has moved from nearby Acocks Green a while ago and serves authentic Portuguese food. All the dishes are explained really well in the menu and each dish is numbered for people with allergies. Portion sizes were really good, and food came out really hot. We all loved the dishes we ordered. At the end of the meal, each table was given a complementary shot of liquor (we had Almond) and a traditional Portuguese Custard Tart. If you are travelling by car, parking is tricky, but you do have publicly available paid car parking nearby, Mell Square Car Park is c5min walk. We had a lovely time with great food and will look to return soon

Absolutely awful food - it's not authentic North Portuguese cuisine - menu descriptions do not match food served and redicuously over-priced.

Unfortunately, as much as we wanted to love it here, we did not have a great experience at Porto Duoro. My partner and I visited on Christmas Eve with a table booked at 16:45 thinking we would have plenty of time to enjoy our meal before anywhere near closing time. Sadly we were completely rushed, we sat down to eat and our bread and olive starter arrived as we ordered a bottle of red wine. As we had literally one bite of our starter, our mains arrived - this is within TEN minutes of sitting down and arriving at the restaurant. My creamy chicken was nice but partner paid £35 for a fillet steak which was very average and bland - no spices or seasoning used at all. The sides were again bland and easily something you could knock up at home, a plain basic salad, plain rice and a watery spinach dish. Within 5 minutes of finishing our dinner, my dessert arrived which again was ok but flavourless, topped with a stale biscuit so old it was bendable without snapping! The ‘mulled wine’ was just hot wine, no cinnamon or spice flavour to it whatsoever however the manager did remove it from our bill. Nonetheless, he seemed eager to leave from the get go and we managed to compete 3 courses within 45 mins, I have never been so rushed. We had pretty much 3/4 of the bottle of wine left as we’d not been able to sit and relax and enjoy the evening given how rushed it was. Despite spending £100, we had a 5/10 meal with little flavour along with a 5/10 experience. We had a young female waitress who was lovely however and made a very disappointing experience much better. We won’t come back sadly, despite really wanting to like it here. Premium prices for average food.

Our family have always enjoyed this family run restaurant, who this year moved from their site at Acocks Green to Solihull. We had a family festive dinner here last night and pleased to announce it’s as good as ever. The Christmas festivities were well underway and very infectious. There was live music and we had a great waitress, Ona, who was as friendly and as helpful as you could possibly want. All in all, a good festive night out for our family. Definitely be back in the new year

Had a lovely time here. Very busy on a Saturday night. Even though service was a bit slow, the staff were friendly. Lovely Portuguese wine. I would give the cocktails a miss though. Food is delicious and served very hot. Absolutely delicious. Definitely on the pricier side at about £60 pp, but worth it for special occasions. I think the seafood/fish options are better than the meat options after trying both. My only request is that they need live music on the weekend, especially during peak hours. If not that, they need speakers on the other side of the restaurant as the music could only be heard at the bar side. A little bit quiet on the side I was sitting. Great to support local businesses!!

Attendants scattered from reception. I went with my daughter-in-law, who is used to going to this place, but she herself found the service to be very bad today. We even asked for Port wine, and the waiter said they didn't have it. Thanks

Been wanting to go to this restaurant since it moved to Solihull for a while, I was not disappointed! Great looking and welcoming decor, good layout, welcoming, friendly and attentive staff. Comprehensive menu choice and well cooked and presented meals all for reasonable prices. Combined with the atmosphere made for a great night out. I will definitely be visiting again, it's well worth it.

This place is excellent, I was raised in Solihull, I work in restaurants, this is my favourite restaurant in Solihull ever. Authentic Portugese, unique restaurant, amazing food. It may not exactly be cheap but it's great value. The drinks are also unusual in The West Midlands, the genuine article, and just really good. I'd definitely consider going for breakfast or lunch.

I had an amazing dining experience at Porto Douro! The food was really good in both taste and presentation. The waiter Joshua was super nice, well trained and made sure we felt taken care of throughout our meal. It was absolutely a great restaurant if you are looking for dates, celebration or even casual meals. Super recommend!

Makes me want to go back to Lisbon. Seven of us went here for a family dinner this evening. The food was fabulous. The rabbit stew was phenomenal, best I've had in a restaurant. If you love meat on the bone, take a couple of hours to do the rabbit stew justice with a nice bottle of douro ✨ All of us really enjoyed it, the lamb shank also being of note. The senior waiters did all the heavy lifting early in the night with impeccable service, so when they stepped down later in the evening their junior colleagues had a hard act to follow. At least they have excellent role models. Looking forward to coming back

4.5 star place. Only had time for one course. I had the Rabbit stew, excellent. Nice beer. Will definitely go back for a longer visit. I have been back again twice since my first review. Excellent every time. The Chicken stroganoff is recommended as is the lamb shank, by my colleague. Forgot to get photos, I’ll just have to go again 😉

This place is a shambles. We were rushed to leave our table, the noise level was so high we couldn't talk comfortably, and the food was so-so. We will not be returning!!!

Visited with a large group as part of a business trip. The food was excellent. The staff are fantastic and the atmosphere was really good. Difficult to fault this restaurant, well priced great value for money.

Having enjoyed coming to Porto Douro a number of times since they moved to Solihull , we were looking forward to having a breakfast meal. But sadly, this wasn't to be. I ordered the English breakfast, and my wife ordered the vegetarian breakfast. To be honest, our £30.00 meals were a big disappointment. Coffee weak, beans not very good, requested brown toast from menu to they only serve white bread (but it is Portuguese!) We could have gotten the same meal from Weatherspoons for half the price. Please Porto Duro bring your breakfast meals up to the same standard as your lunch and dinner servings.

I loved the quality of service, the food was excellent as always.

Refused to do poached eggs. When I asked where my brown toast was I was told I didn’t order any (Obviously did). Beans were cold. The biggest disappointment was that the coffee is really below par for a place trying to establish itself. Will still try it for an evening meal as I want it to do well, but PLEASE up your coffee game if you want people to return in the AM.

Another missed opportunity for Solihull. Underwhelming experience. Poor service and food. Starter was frozen. Main was cheap steak served on a cold plate swimming in resting juices, over cooked (not as ordered) soggy chips. Chicken breast was dry and tough. Lovely atmosphere and interior but let down in every other aspect. Nothing Portuguese about the place. How can you get chicken breast and steak wrong? Won't be returning. The staff were busy taking everyone's money instead of delivering good service.

Fab food and service. We were treated to free pastry and wine samples on first night. Was hoping for the same treatment on second visit unfortunately that didn't happen. When tried to go in without booking was told all booked, 1.5hrs later still empty tables. Disappointing.

A beautiful meal, everyone enjoyed it. There was 5 adults and 4 children. We have used here since it was in Acocks Green and never had any complaints. Well worth trying

The food is great and portions are generous, we tried Some appetisers and they were all good but the francesinha was absolute heaven and incredibly rich. The service is good and friendly the manager came and check many times. The place is really well laid out and quite modern but it could get extremely noisy and it’s difficult to have a conversation. We had mojito as a drink and unfortunately it was very bland and almost no alcohol not a deal breaker but certainly you would expect a decent cocktail from a similar place . Overall a great independent addition for the Solihull dining offer.

Nice tasting food but a few items were missing from the seafood platter, which was not told to us. The young waitress dropped a very hot plate onto someone in our party which burnt them and caused blistering on their hand- the dish was re-made and seemed rushed as it didn’t resemble the first plate that arrived. The staff were very apologetic but we were shocked that when it came to the final bill nothing had been revised or complimentary. Expensive considering all of the above.

Really disappointed. This was booked for my friends 60th birthday celebration. I advised the restaurant on the app when booking and phoned to ensure they knew of her birthday. I asked if they would acknowledge her birthday with a cake and candle or something similar and they assured me that they would. After eating what I call an average steak, I waited for something to celebrate her birthday and nothing arrived. We were then asked to hurry up and leave, after spending £200 as they wanted our table back!!!! Disappointed to say the least. I did tell my friend what was supposed to have happened :(

Very tasty food, good service, atmosphere and amazing singer. Special mention to Magda, Juan and the young lady too. Wish we can have a restaurant like this in London, where we live. The owner is very attentive and is also offering you delicious complimentary port wine and natas. And not to forget, the place is spotless. Will definitely return when we go again to Birmingham.

Looking forward to our meal as it appeared to be a lively place. The staff were great , very friendly and welcoming. However I have to judge it on food , which was very disappointing. I may have ordered the wrong starter in chicken gizzard which was grissly and over powering in chilli etc. But my main course of salted cod was so over done , it was inedible. Shame . Won't be coming back

Wow. This is the best restaurant in Solihull by far. The food is so next level. The restaurant has a fantastic atmosphere and we were treated to a fab singer tonight who has a fab voice. Harvey was our server who was fantastic and a real credit to the restaurant. the food is generous and delicious and fantastic value for money. The wine is reasonably priced (We had the Portuguese red which was delicious and only £23 a bottle). I would highly recommend the restaurant to friends. The owner stopped at our table to chat to us which was really appreciated. He was very friendly and welcoming. If you would like a fantastic meal with authentic home cooked flavours in a lovely atmosphere then Porto Douro is for you!

First timer, but I am definitely going back 🌟 Had the Cozido à portuguesa, a traditional dish that was so authentic it took me back to Portugal. The serving staff were attentive and friendly. Worthy of the five stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Visited with family as a birthday bash and wasn't disappointed. I had a steak with an egg on top which I always find hard to resist and the dessert which was caramel topped was beyond delicious.

We walked past this restaurant so many times and it always looked nice. I was looking forward to this dinner but our experience here was a complete disappointment. The drink (caipirinha) was terrible. There was no sugar there at all. I had one sip and didn't touch it again. They forgot about our starter. The main course (seafood stew and the rabbit) were absolutely bland, not a gram of salt in them. And so were the vegetables that we ordered as a side. They were just boiled potatoes and carrots (no salt, butter or anything else). I wanted to order coffee and dessert but we decided not to risk it. The interior and the menu look nice but that's about it. We will not be going here again.

We visited this restaurant earlier this year when it was located in Acock's Green and I posted the following positive review "A hidden gem! A great little restaurant in an unexpected location. Terrific menu choice and good quality food. Service was slightly disappointing but friendly enough. Good atmosphere overall although live music was quite loud at times and made table conversation difficult. We will certainly be returning before too long". Last month, we visited the restaurant in its new Solihull location. I was one of a party of seven. My meal was eventually served to me more than 20 minutes after main courses had been presented to all of my fellow guests. The chicken Piri Piri was extremely dry and tasteless as though it had been left under a heater for the 20 minutes. After the main courses were finished, glasses of port were brought to our table. The server spilled two glasses down the back of my neck and onto my beige trousers! An apology was offered and I was given paper towels to clean up. I chose to go to the rest room to do this and when I returned I found that my unfinished drink had been taken away! All in all, the evening was a disaster for me although 4 of the other 6 guests at our table were satisfied with their meals. I was not offered anything to compensate for the drink spillage etc. The following day I sent an email to the owners. No reply! A week later I sent a further gentle reminder inviting their comments. No reply so far! It is now 3 weeks since our visit and it is clear that the restaurant has no intention of replying. Contrary to what I said in my earlier review, I very much doubt that we will be returning to this venue.

The food is as good as they were in Acocks Green before they moved. However, the service really dropped a lot. They just wanted us to finish quicker. They only kept asking if we have finished, although we just spent 1.5hours for our dinner. They came to our table 4 times asking if we have finished, even though our food is just half finished only. They used to serve Portugal egg tart on the house when they were in Acocks Green but now they said it was finished. Same as the complementary port wine, we need to go asking for it instead of asking and serving us after dinner. The staff service is inefficient and not responsive. I asked for extra cutlery and plates they forgot and need to wait long time to get another staff to serve I don’t think I will go back again. Really disappointed….

First time we have eaten here and it was excellent. The staff were all lovely and friendly. Our meal was first class. A special thank you to Harvie who looked after us. Harvie was very efficient and happy to help us with our choices. Thank you for a great time.

We had dinner at Porto Douro tonight for my mom’s birthday. I have remarked in the reservation that it was a birthday dinner but nothing was prepared for the occasion, while the table next to us was served Portuguese custard tarts for their birthday celebration. We were not served any Port wine either, it was our third time there so we know it’s a norm to serve Port wine at the end of the meal. It was a disappointing experience overall.
