Just found this place for Sunday lunch. Great food and friendly service and the price is basically a steal.

Went to portals a ladies that lunch and everything was perfect

This was a first visit for my wife and I but it won't be the last. We've walked past many times but today we decided to try the food. I had a Goats' Cheese Wellington and my wife had the Slow Roast Beef as mains. They were both excellent, as were the staff and seating arrangements. Thank you all for a lovely dining experience.

Spacious, plenty room between tables.

Perfect place. Can't tip with card though so take cash for tips you won't be disappointed

Service is over and above , very friendly and efficient staff. third visit for sunday lunch, the gravy is ti die for ,(licking my lips thinkg about it,almost taste it) The meat is a little to tough for my liking ,same as last visit (had the trio ) pity, spoiled what could have been a perfect meal, The chef needs to work at this. The vegatables are cooked well and tasty although a little too much brocolli every time. The carrot tops are left on so needed to prune these, Maybe its a fasion im not sure but I dont eat the stalks on pears ,apples ,turnips so Forth,,A little more effort and it would be thee place to go

One of my favourite restaurants in Hartlepool Food is always amazing, with large portion sizes and lots of choice. Separate dietary menus are available. Staff are friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere is great. Restaurant is clean and tidy, with lovely decor.

1st visit here for Restaurant week. I had the Salmon Fishcake, Chilli Burger and Sticky Toffee pudding washed down with a bottle of Merlot. Very good meal. Will probably return, next restaurant week.

I have got to say this was the best stake I've ever had! It was done to perfection and the sauce it came with was amazing. My friend ordered the mussels and I have never liked mussels my whole life but she offered me to try one and to my amazement I actually liked it! I really liked it. I will be ordering the mussels next time I visit here. It is a bit expensive but with the offers they have on buying one meal and a starter for £13.95 it worked out well. You could also switch having a dessert instead of a starter which I did and got the strawberry cheese cake.

Portals food was always good. A plus for me is that they offer a good range of gluten free food

Pre-booked for dinner just now and every thing about Portals Place is phenomenal! Exceptional customer service even helping us to book a return taxi back home . Superb food from the baked crab to the sea bass and into the pistachio creme brulee. A crisp sancerre followed the white rabbit cocktail into the burrow beautifully! I wish to visit this classy venue again when I am next in the neighbourhood. Thank you Erin and Chanice. Perfection on a plate!

Every so often you come across a gem of a place and this restaurant is no exception. Food, wine and service excellent and moderately priced. My wife and I had a lovely experience. When we return to the area, we will return. Visited Thursday 13th July 2023.

Sunday lunch, very nice. Reasonable price, only criticism veg not to my liking

Even though it was busy we were seated straight away, ordered 2 parmos, did not wait very long for it to arrive and it was lovely, the chips were amazing too, highly recommend.

Had a really nice evening meal here , good food at reasonable prices and pleasant service , would recommend and return .

Went for Sunday lunch with family. It was good. There were a lot of us and they handled it well. The views of the harbour are great.

Hosted our wedding reception here in May 2023 in Abbey's bar, fabulous day enjoyed by everyone. The buffet was delicious and catered for all tastes. Prior to the wedding we had many requests and nothing was too much trouble for them. They opened up early and let us stay late, putting in a 12 hour shift! Highly recommend if you want a small private venue (30-35)people. Made our day very special. Thank you

Arrived late to a large party of guests celebrating a 60th birthday party the staff gave amazing service to assist us in catching up '' Garlic Mushrooms followed by thee perfectly cooked medium too well done Steak 5* 👏 ✔️ 😀 👍

Absolutely divine food. Waiting staff were lovely. It was really busy but we still didn't have to wait long between courses. Portal's was warm, welcoming and very clean. Would recommend this place 100%+. Will be returning again, again and again.

Update: This time our visit was disappointed. The quality of the food was not as we know it. Maybe just a bad day..... Best place in hartlepool to enjoy the evening. very delicious and fresh food for a good price. Need to make a reservation, always full.

Have eaten here many times over the years and food has always been pretty good, but our last visit was a bit disappointing. Mains were pretty average, and both myself and my missus opted for the cherry and amaretto cheesecake, which was disappointing - base was soggy and no taste of cherry or amaretto, and covered in strawberry icecream sauce. Poor.

Lovely meal definitely recommend

While the food was really good, we were rushed and had to have our desserts/coffee on the bar which was cold. Wouldn't go back in a hurry

Gorgeous food but didn't realise you had to pay extra for chips and veg as we went for the £16.95 meal and ending up paying £21.00.Needs to be stated on menu as extras.

We had a Sunday lunch here a few weeks ago and it was fantastic so we decided to have an evening meal there. Unfortunately this didn't live up to expectations. Total lack of flavour on both meals. Lager was nice and cold lovely place to sit but food was very poor.

Popped in for a late lunch on Saturday. The food was fantastic. £12.95 for a 2 course with extra £2 for steak but worth every penny.

Very busy night but aye, good scran, decent prices. Diverse menu, had the fish cakes and picanha steak, portions are a bit stingy like and give us a pretty mid peppercorn sauce with no option of other sauces (1 part English mustard, 3 part Hellman's lighter than light is my go to steak sauce. Try it)

We chose here to go with a group of about 16-20 people. We called and arranged everything weeks ago. We are traveling from the West Midlands. Rang today to make sure everything was definitely still set. And they decided to tell us that we needed to have a £5 deposit per person by this Friday(we were due to go in 2 weeks). We were also told we needed to tell them what each member of our party was going to have to eat by this Friday. If the deposits and choosing everyone's meal is policy, that's fine. But state that when arranging the party there. Dont wait until weeks later to suddenly state "We need deposits and everyone's meal choices in 2 day." Again, we are traveling from the West Midlands. And have people from other areas also in our party. So this was simply not an option. And choosing your meal 2 weeks ahead of the visit is simply ridiculous. Again, I wouldnt have given this place such a terrible review if they had simply stated this policy weeks ago when we first contacted. Incompetence and terrible business practices. They lost a group of 20 customers. IN REPLY TO OWNER: This was in 2019 or 2020. My review seemed to have been hidden for naming the venue who took us in last minute. My main review still stands. IN REPLY TO OWNERS REPLY: The deposit is understandable. But was not stated when making the booking weeks ahead. And was only requested within a couple of days of the party, which at that time was not possible as many members of the party were in the middle of traveling from out of the area. Again...the deposits weren't an issue. But mention this when booking to give us time to get money from everyone in the group. And don't spring it on us weeks later(AKA 2 days before the party). REPLY: At no point did we have a call or email from the business until 2 days before the party, asking for the deposits. No missed calls. Nothing. Again...the deposit would not have been an issue. But when booking, we were simply told the table was reserved. Then weeks later, which was 2 days before the party, we received a phone call saying we owed a deposit. You can call the review petty. But bottom line is, there was poor communication. And it almost ruined a party that people had traveled hours for.

We've been here twice now and it has to be one of the nicest restaurants I've eaten in. The location is great, the service is absolutely 1st class and most importantly the food served here is out of this world. Can't recommend enough

We had a little birthday meal at Portals Place, and we were all very pleased with the food. Even the steak was cooked exceptionally well, and well worth the money. The staff were attentive and even got my son the WiFi code so he would play on his tablet. The only reason I haven't given 5 stars is because the cheese sauce on the burger was a little bit overpowering, the burger was really nice, but would have been better with a better balance of sauces. Recommend going here, it's in a great location, very relaxing with a nice outdoor seating area.

I really don't do Sunday lunch in a restaurant but our friends booked a table. I'm so glad they booked, it's was blinking amazing, the 3 meat meal was delicious. The gravy was yummy & I'd have taken a bucket of it home.. Great location & amazing staff. Brilliant value for money. 10/10 from us.

Lovely night out here. Accommodated a party of 11 on a Saturday evening. Everyone's food was delicious and we were all served together, so no one was left waiting. We had some less a led in our party with a wheelchair. No problem for them at all. Highly recommended.

We loved our fish dishes. The fish cake was crisp on top and flavoursome in the centre. The monkfish was divine

Visited here for the first time last night, quick service, food was nice and hot. Even got a free bread platter consisting of ciabatta bread and two homemade dips (one chorizo and tomato and one houmous) left plenty of time between the starter and main and staff came over on two occasions to ensure everything was okay. Will deffiantly be visiting again but would reccomend you book as it can get very busy 😊

Lovely location. One thing though I asked for skinny fries, when they came they where soggy and limp soaked with grease. Nothing like skinny fries. Revisited yesterday and it's not as good as it was. When ordering my wife asked for chips but received veg which was crammed into a small pot. Also the Pork tenderloin medallions weren't medallions just a poor pork cut! The source wasn't right either. The chunky chip where fine. When paying for the bill they tried to charge for a bottle of wine when I'd only had a glass. This seems to happening quite a lot lately not only here but all over. I think we'll be giving it a miss for quite a while.

Can’t book online, have to ring to book and get no answer. Are we in 1992? A single review will not ‘damage a business’ you should take the constructive criticism and get with the times, or at least answer your phone if that’s the only method you can figure out how to operate! There are plenty of family business that are intelligent enough to get an online booking system or don’t let the phone ring off the hook multiple times. If you can’t handle reviews you’re in the wrong business!

Food was good. Service fairly good for "yous"? Atmosphere is nice and civilised.

Had a great Italian meal here with the early bird option saving good money. Atmosphere is very goodnand staff very friendly. A great place to eat when staying at Premier Inn as can walk across. Able to book in no problem.

Food was average they missed a starter from the party

Yesterday we held our daughters wedding buffet at Portals, within Abbey’s Bar. Staff were attentive and went out of their way to make our experience special. Lovely food; professional, friendly staff. Thank you for the care and attention.

Had really nice evening here.. Food was very nice although a limited menu. Good service but it does tend to get a bit noisy as often large parties in. Bar area really comfortable for either pre or after dinner drinks x

One of the few places to eat out in Hartlepool

Went to your loverly resturant Thursday 3rd February 2022 and I and my mother had mussels to start were beautiful and to follow had an excellent pork tenderloin with mashed potato and vegetables I must say was presented excellent and our full party of four all enjoyed the service and food etc highly recommend anyone in hartlepool go there you will not be dissapointed
