Chilli Cake in Hartlepool

The food is really beautiful in here and the surroundings are just lovely. I especially love the art work by local artists on the walls. The waitresses are really nice and friendly . It's a shame it never seems busy.

We hired out chilli cake for my Mams 60th and Julie and her team could not do enough for us. It was a perfect place to host the party and the buffet provided was exceptional. Thank you Julie, James and team!

We visited Chilli Cake on Sunday at short notice and were pleasantly surprised. There is a Sunday lunch menu. I had the black pudding bon bons as a starter and my wife had the soup of the day. Both were tasty and very flavoursome. For our mains I had the pork loin and my wife had the salmon. Again the meals were perfect and we really enjoyed them.The staff were friendly and approachable and we really enjoyed the experience.Will definitely be going back to try some of their other offerings.

Visited here with short notice reservation and we were accommodated with room to spare. Had a lovely meal, well presented and cooked perfectly. Ambience and background music was good. Service was a little slower than most restaurants, but it gave us time for a drink and chat, and food was worth the wait. If I could make some critique to help them improve, the staff were not as attentive as I would have liked, (I had to walk up to bar for service). I was also charged for a full Parmesan when we only had a half Parmesan, but didn’t realise until we got home. The red wine was fine ( 1st glass) but second was corked, this was changed without any fuss and they were apologetic. I was told it would not be charged...it was... however, I would visit again as the food is very good, and I hope the team can take some of my points and make the improvements. I’ll be back for my refund

Friends and I enjoyed everything about chilli cake tonight . The surroundings are quirky. we were very relaxed.... a perfect place to enjoy a lovely meal and drinks . The cocktails were a bargain at £5. We all had a different Parmo and all of them were delicious. The service was fabulous. The owner was very attentive. I will look forward to our next visit ,

When we arrived at 6pm, there were three other tables when we visited Chilli Cake this week - the busiest I've ever seen it. Still pretty dead, but as it's a lovely quirky place with a great atmosphere I was hopeful that it's finally finding its feet. Unfortunately this week's experience shows why every time we go there's not another soul in there.At our visit to Chilli Cake this week, my family and I waited an hour in a near-empty restaurant for four burgers. We weren't told there was a wait, offered more drinks, and no one came to check how our food was once the waitress had chucked it at us and run off (the truffles chips were raw in the middle, and after an hour's wait would have liked more drinks!) Both the waitress and bartender studiously avoided eye contact and then totally disappeared. After ten minutes, the customers at the one other table that were still there after we'd been waiting an hour had to go to the kitchens to ask a chef to summon someone to let them pay for their meal.I seized the opportunity to go to the bar to request more drinks and the dessert menu. The waitress was bored and cross and informed me that the kitchen was about to close - at 8pm. When we'd ordered at 6:20pm, gotten our meals at 7:25pm and then the waitress had disappeared. I've always thought it's a shame that they're so empty before, but now I understand why. The food is mostly fine, though the menu is a little boring, but the service is shocking. We've always found the atmosphere pleasant enough for an empty restaurant, but with other customers in this week the music was so loud the waitress couldn't hear our orders over it, and then stopped entirely for about fifteen minutes. I came down the stairs to an awkward silence because the music had stopped and the staff had all wandered off.We came to Chilli Cake this week because we had family visiting for the holidays, but frankly I'm left embarrassed by the terrible service, the awkward atmosphere and the rude staff... And the food was only so-so! I've recommended Chilli Cake before, and visited several times, but I certainly won't risk it again.

I visited Chilli Cake on Saturday evening, there was a medium size group of us celebrating a birthday. The staff were amazing and very knowledgable with the menu and drinks. The xocktails were amazing and the food served was well presented and very tasteful this is my second visit. I love watching the chef do his job in the open plan kitchen and straight to the table. Thanks so much for an amazing night!! Will be back again. amazing

We needed somewhere to eat in the rain and this place had space on a Saturday night. Seemed friendly enough - perhaps a little too keen. We were put quite close to the bar where we watched a female employee boss around another employee which was a little embarrassing to watch . Our food and drinks were ordered and we watched the open plan kitchen in action. Absolutely love an open plan kitchen because it gives you a bit of entertainment plus it can give off a confidence in what they are doing. Sadly, this was SO let down by the non hygienic practices of their front of house staff. Male pot washer came out into restaurant area cough, cough coughing - into his hands but more often into the open. When he did cough into his hands, he was not seen to wash said hands. He used his pot washing tea towel to wipe around his sweaty forehead and stood chatting to the other front of house staff saying how hot he was. At one point, he started messing with his shoe - in full view of the restaurant including slapping the shoe on the sole to get it to go back onto his foot - again, no hand washing. For some reason, this guy then started delivering food to the tables without any basic hand hygiene. The female front of house member of staff was seen to be picking up some dropped food from the kitchen floor. We watched her go towards the back of the restaurant presumably to bin said items as she was gone a matter of a second or two. We expected her to go and wash her hands but no, she collected some food to deliver to the tables. This was all observed as we were eating our mains. The problem is with this sort of bad hygiene behaviours, once you have noticed it, you keep noticing it so as we sat there finishing our drinks, the coughing, touching noses, hair and faces and not washing hands became more and more obvious . This really needs to be looked at in terms of a) not passing on anything to the paying customers and b) a realisation that staff can be seen. Food was okay though both our mains came with a paper napkin directly under our food which meant when we got to it, we were in peril of actually eating the napkin. We were not sure of the purpose of the napkin but our starters and mains both had one under the food which was a bit weird. Would we go there again - No. Were we ill afterwards - luckily no but having observed such awful practices, we were relieved but surprised.

Lovely food, good cocktails and choice of gins, great atmosphere and excellent friendly staff who are attentive and knowledgable

We eat here whenever we can, especially birthdays and special occasions. We love the food and the atmosphere. There is often excellent live music. The food is consistently delicious.

Called one lunchtime, the seats were uncomfortable and the food quite expensive, the music was also depressing.

Went for Sunday lunch, booked table and seated straight away. We had starters and main course. Two picked prawn cocktail and two black pudding starters, both gorgeous and would have again. Main course two vegetarian mushroom option delicious, chicken dish which was tender and lovely sweet potato mash and roast beef meal, ample portion. All plates cleaned and everyone happy with choices. Lovely staff, complements to the chef. Looking forward to our next visit.

We ate here prior to going to an evening performance at the Northern College of Art. The restaurant is in the centre of town, just a couple of doors down from the college, overlooking a pedestrianised area. We booked in advance and were given a lovely window table. The decor is fabulous - colourful, quirky with an amazing spiral staircase. The staff were so friendly. We had the 2 course evening special -£20 which included a complimentary drink. I had the gin recommended by our waitress (Monkey 47 - really good). We shared an antipasto. I had the chilli - made from well cooked beef rather than minced meat - delicious!!! - accompanied by chunky chips. Unfortunately I was so full I couldn’t finish the chips. My husband had the chicken which he also enjoyed. We shared a desert. Will definitely go again.

Called for Dinner Saturday evening. Very good and very reasonably priced . Well done chilli cake. We will be back .

I have now visited chilli cakes five times with my wife three times for lunch and twice for an evening meal and can not fault anything.Every meal has been excellent the sharing platter has to be seen to be believed and the owner and all the staff are really friendly and efficient.The Atmosphere is relaxing and comfortable and even has live music on some nights we will definitely be going back

A large group of us gathered for lunch, there seemed to be some initial confusion about whether we were being seated upstairs or downstairs, that was sorted and we we were shown to our tables, it was a little disappointing as we were separated, would’ve preferred to be on one long table together, the food however, was gorgeous, I had the Cajun salmon & couldn’t fault it, all other meals were devoured, I did have food envy looking at both the Parmo & the vegan dish, the chips both ordinary & sweet potato were amazing, I do think the soft drinks prices could be reduced £2.40 for a coke is way too much but on a par with the pubs I’m assuming, when I next visit it’ll be tap water!

Had a lovely trip here last week for a ‘friends’ themed night. Amazing atmosphere and food, would definitely recommend a trip.

What a great place to visit, this was a first visit and from the second we stepped in we where welcome.

I am writing this review after being let down twice by chilli cake, we booked online to go one Monday in October for lunch and when we got there it was closed, apparently their don’t open on Mondays, so why take a booking? When we eventually got in touch with them we asked them to confirm our booking for 7 people for 23rd December we made on September 8th, only to get a phone call four days before our visit to say their couldn’t train their chef in time but we could go on 27th or 29th December, so are their training the chef Christmas Eve Christmas Day and Boxing Day? I won’t be booking or visiting again.

Great service and excellent food , had the share board which was huge and delicious ! Had a lovely window seat and watched the Christmas lights switch on !

Thoroughly enjoyed our lunchtime visit for 17 ladies and gentlemen of a certain age, this last week. We dropped off the menu requests and for each person they were beautifully prepared and presented.

Now my favourite place to eat when in Hpool. Really nice atmosphere in a nice spot, good service and the Sunday lunches we ordered were top quality. I skipped dessert but my friends were v.impressed by the tart they shared.

Called in for lunch on Friday, plenty of choice on the menu to cater for all dietary needs, staff were pleasant & helpful & the food was well presented, tasty & hot, however the portions are small & too expensive, my sweet potato was £6.50 & gorgeous but I was hungry again within 2 hours of leaving. A more realistic price would’ve been £5, alternatively a larger potato would’ve justified the price, wouldn’t rush back.

Fantastic night, everyone enjoyed the food and entertainment. Would 100% go back and recommend, Christmas entertainment looks good.

Visited on a Sunday with my family. I opted for the chicken dish with a creamy sauce & OMG it was truly delightful! Will definitely return, soon hopefully.

We went to chilli cake as the other place we wanted to go had a private function.but we glad we did,we had the shared seafood platter which was excellent value and the food was really good,I feel sorry sorry for this place as they must be losing money hand over fist with the debacle going outside there premises,(come on council) we will return for your Sunday lunch you know who we are,one little winge get a wine/ bottle menu and up the quality of it,thank you chili cake.

Me and my boyfriend visited Chilli Cake on Friday for the first time after hearing many good reviews, the menu was absolutely fab and there was so many things that I would have liked to try. Both mine and my boyfriends meals were gorgeous and didn’t take long to come out. The staff were brilliant, so friendly and attentive and made sure everything was okay for us! The decor is very quirky and unique, it’s a shame that Chilli Cake is situated where it is, as not many people probably know of its whereabouts with it being a little bit hidden away, but I will definitely be recommending it to everyone and going back to try some of the cocktails on the menu also!

Lovely place, helpful staff . The food was delicious and they were very accommodating to a friends situation. They certainly went the extra mile. I can't recommend it enough. Can't wait to visit again. Especially for Sunday lunch.

We often go the chilli cake for food- I’ve only recently joined trip advisor but I wanted to recommend it. The food is always delicious and the chefs are always helpful and amenable to dietary requirements which I love!

I can’t recommend this place enough, such a lovely place to go with friends. Food freshly cooked, from a spotless kitchen in view. We’ve been a few times now with party of 4, all had different meals and all meals were to a high standard. Owner and bar staff so friendly. Great cocktails too! Definitely a go to place for us!

Called in while shopping today and have to say I highly recommend it. I ordered a ham salad sandwich with sweet potato fries and the hubby ordered a full parmo with fries both were delicious and the side salads were lovely.There was also a good selection of drinks tea to cocktails.The staff were really friendly and the place had a fab vibe to it.

Here for a family birthday and they looked after our large group of 20+ really well. Enjoyed a top tasty starter of king prawns, followed by mega tasty chilli chicken. Very pleasant charming service and amazing value.

Called in for lunch after being recommended and as an ex-lessee of this building,I was curious to see what changes had been made since I had it.

I would honestly eat every meal in here and not get sick of it. The food is always brilliant, the surroundings are awesome and the service is great too. We have eaten lunch and evening meals here. We even booked up for 25 people to have Sunday dinner for my Sons christening here. Great live music and evening events. They do great events for kids too such as breakfast with the gruffalo and breakfast with Santa. Best place to eat in Hartlepool by far! Could not recommend this place enough.

Popped into Chilli Cake for lunch. Impressed they were even open with the weather outside. Had the Trawlerman with pizza fries which was delicious as ever, and the service was superb.

I had the pleasure of helping to organise a friends hen celebration for a group of 27 ladies. It has to be local, it has to be special, there had to be great food and of course alcohol. Chilli Cake was the chosen venue and let me explain why. Communication from the very first message was faultless, I received a response to any questions the very same day and their suggestions of a meat and cheese platter and arrival drink sounded great. We paid a deposit and arrived on the day to the perfect venue which was clean and perfectly presented. The staff were exceptional and when the meat and cheese platters arrived I just had to take a photo! I've seen nothing like it and it exceeded my expectations by far. And it didn't only look amazing, it tasted pretty amazing too. We had balloons, we had gin, prosecco pong and most importantly we had fun. I would absolutely recommend Chilli Cake to anyone. I most certainly will be back and I'm sure many of the other ladies will be too. Thank you to all of the staff for making it happen.

Called and were a bit disappointed that food was no longer available. This wasn't a great problem as we could eat elsewhere. We enjoyed our drinks and we are waiting to go back to enjoy the food. Next time then.

Lovely little café - off the beaten track kind of, but well worth a visit. We are not vegetarian but the menu looked so delicious we opted for a vegan bowl and were not disappointed. Lovely choice and freshly prepared. It was delicious.

Met friends here for a coffee. First visit for us all. Lovely place, nice friendly staff, varied menu. Quite busy. Lack of nearby parking was the only downside which won't help their business. Plenty of disabled parking bays outside though.

WOW absolutely amazing place, food is utterly amazing, huge portions and the best I've tasted in a long time ! The staff are all amazing friendly and attentive. We went when the amazing Elena Larkin was singing wich made for a perfect evening. The manageress had said there was only 1 chef serving a busy busy night due to sickness and I have to say the standard of food was 10 out of 10 and for how busy it was there it was first class, I will recommend this place to all. Honestly thank you guys for a wonderful night ♡

This is a fab little place serving something quite different compared to the rest of Hartlepool restaurants. Afternoon tea is outstanding and the cocktails are great.

A lovely addition to Hartlepool's evening restaurant choice. Very different from anything else on offer in the town. The menu is a mix of all sorts but it is all nice and the staff are really welcoming and friendly. The Salmon, king prawn and chorizo jambalaya was a real treat. Live music and comedy nights add to the attraction. We will definitely be back

A fab night out - thank you. We have never been here before but so glad we saw it on TripAdvisor and decided to do. The food was fab. We ordered the Sharing Board ' fantastic, lots to eat, lots of different flavours and all cooked to perfection. The service was great. I really do hope this place goes from strength to strength - the atmosphere was lovely and staff very attentive, we will definitely be back and the cake we took home was lush !! Thank you. If you have never visited give it ago - a lovely menu that will suit all, well worth a visit. You will not be dissapointed see you soon.

We visited twice with my Father-in-Law for lunch during the week and on Sunday. I normally try to reserve a table on Sundays as there's usually live music and all the roast options and it is popular and can be crowded.

Friend's called all around Hartlepool to get me some dairy free cake for my birthday. What actually came was THE BEST dairy free, chocolate fudge cake known to man.

Went to the Peter Crawford event tonight food took far too long and our food came out separately. Ordered and asked for my dessert twice while other tables seemed to be getting a lot quicker service.

Went for a good meal with my wife for date night. Food was excellent , I had the beef burger and my wife had chicken and waffles. Drinks, especially the mojito and lemon cheesecake cocktails, to accompany the food where also excellent.

We were there as part of a private Birthday party for my Mums 80th , there were about 42 of us , the owners did a sort of tapas menu , bringing us varied platters over the evening , it was delicious , different , served and presented well, the staff and owners were amazing and made this occasion very special for us all. We all loved it and made new friends of the owners.A huge thank you and we will,definitely come again when up north .Well done .

Visited here for lunch with family recently. We were seated really quickly and the service here was really good throughout. Very friendly and kind staff. The food was tasty and worth the price paid. The cafe was very busy despite it being midweek and early lunchtime suggesting this is a very popular place. Quirky decor inside is a nice touch.

Had a birthday meal with friends had the salmon main which was very nice and enjoyed a pint of Portland American IPA. Nice atmosphere and very pleasant staff. Will return to try more good things from the menu. The menu is different and interesting. Finished with a lovely ice cream desert :-)

Although we've had delicious cocktails at Chilli Cake many times we'd never tried the food so last night decided to take the plunge and give it a try. For folk that have read my other reviews they'll know I'm a bit 'fussy' but I have to say the beef burger I ordered exceeded all expectations. The beef was meaty, the burger looked great and tasted even better! I chose chunky chips and a fresh crisp side salad and I actually ate it all! Usually my husband has to eat half but I cleaned the plate!!! My husband ordered the chicken 'dirty bird' and thoroughly enjoyed it too, again the plate went back empty! We ended our meal by sharing a knickerbocker glory, although it satisfied the sweet tooth and we ate it all, it could have been a bit more exciting, possibly more cream, a flake or two, meringue??? The possibilities are endless!! The atmosphere in Chilli Cake is just right, chilled and ambient, friendly and always busy. What the dessert lacked was made up by the staff, friendly, helpful and just the right amount attention. We will be back to try the rest of the menu! Highly recommended but book at busy times so as not to be disappointed.

Went on a Saturday evening, wanted to try somewhere different and came across chilli cake.

coffee and probably the best home made cake I've tasted in years were delightful.A light meal the the following day,was equally as good..(mussels cooked to perfection).Will definately return.A good atmosphere and smiling professional staff.Have to mention the cake again,making me hungry thinking about it...Well done.

We recently held our daughters christening party at Chilli Cake and all I can say wow! Chilli Cake is a fantastic party venue. The service was second to none, nothing was too much trouble and our guest left having had a great time.

We visited your restaurant on a Saturday night, with our friends. There was an excellent live band adding to the atmosphere. This is the second time we have been and once again the service was excellent the staff are very friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent, clean plates all round. I can't recommend this lovely place enough.

Lovely salmon salad with sweet potatoes and spicy chickpeas , so tasty and very healthy , cakes looked homemade and very tempting , staff were very welcoming and efficient , nice surroundings , we will be back x

Fantastic. We have eaten here 6 or 7 times and have never been disappointed. The menu changes on a very regular basis. The food is freshly cooked to order from fresh ingredients. The staff are very pleasant and smiling. The restaurant is warm and inviting. What more could you want? Chilli Cake is suitable for a single person right up to a very large party. If you want a ten minute meal try Mcdonalds.

I visited Chilli Cake with my family and couldn't believe this place existed.Its menu was perfect with lots of different options.The sandwiches were the best I've had in years and the Turkish and Rye bread were to die for .

My second visit to Chilli Cake, and again it was excellent. On the previous visit we didn't eat, but enjoyed some drinks including cocktails which were top quality.

I went with friends for an evening for cocktails. Liv & G we're performing, who were fab and the atmosphere was great. A small intimate venue and was perfect for the chilled evening we wanted.

We went here for tea and cake one lunchtime and it was excellent. I can thoroughly recommend the carrot cake! The tea was lovely too! That's all we had so it would be hard to comment on anything else but it seems a really nice place with friendly staff.

The veggie linguine is incredible, the food is always super exciting and delicious, oh I also love the dirty fries! They are also really good at catering for veggies/vegans.

It's not often you find a place to eat that ticks all the boxes. Often the food is just ok but it was cheap or the food was good but the service let it down, not at Chilli Cake.

We had seen reviews of Chilli Cafe and decided to give it a try. Our first visit was, although we did not realise it, at closing time on a Friday afternoon. We asked for 2 Caffe Lattes and chose 2 small cakes to accompany them.

First visit to Chilli Cake in Church Square, Hartlepool. Went on a lunch time and wasn't sure what to expect. It wasn't long before all tables were full. Great place, loved the interior and the staff were very informative about the menu. All 3 of us picked something different and had no complaints. Enjoyed my choice - soup/sarnie on specials board - and the food was prepared and presented as though they cared about your custom. Will definitely return....and soon - have already picked out what I would like next!

The 1st time I visited Chilli Cake was on the recommendation of a friend, its small but has a lovely friendly vibe & tables outside if the weather is nice. The menu is quite small but there's always 4 or 5 specials to chose from aswell as the daily menu & there's a good choice for everyone. The food & cocktails are amazing & I've visited 5 or 6 times now & had something different every time & been happy with every choice. The staff are really pleasant & friendly & happy to answer any questions you ask even during busy times, I would highly recommend this place to anyone

Came here for lunch after seeing 5* reviews on Facebook. Was not disappointed, ordered x2 baked sweet potatoes and a BLT sandwich. All presented lovely and taste was superb. Lovely friendly staff. Will be returning on an evening to sample their evening menu

We called in for lunch one Saturday, what a great call, selected off the specials board

I didn't know what time it was when I went in and found it was 11.10 am. Breakfast finished at 11 am BUT they kindly made me a breakfast wrap.Ms. Jessica took my order and it swiftly came with a piping hot Americano. Very filling indeed. Highly recommended.

Friendly and professional, a pleasure to work with. We work closely with Chilli Cake to provide live entertainment throughout the year. Great staff team, high standard of food & drink, excellent variety. Also a favorite to visit with family and friends. I love that chilli cake gas brought an artisan flavour to Hartlepool.

A well located cafe in Church Square. We've enjoyed the light lunch menu here several times. Cakes are homemade, service is lovely and the decor is cool and comfortable

Visited with friends who regularly go to do the quiz, my first visit, really good atmosphere, good decor and really good quiz, not the biggest of venues so has an intimate feel, will definitely be going again

A warm atmosphere with welcoming staff. The menu is just right, you aren't bombarded with a list of confusing dishes but equally there is something for everyone. If you fancy a burger with friends or want to treat you and a significant other to to rib-eye steaks then this is the place for you. The interior is just as up to date as the menu. It is a breath of fresh air to have a competitively priced establishment as an option, either to relax through the week or get dressed up and go out on a weekend. The jewel in Church Street's crown.

Lunch here is always a treat i love trying out the specials and have to always get one of the brownies , The staff are friendly and good to talk to and if you cant decide what to order give recommendations that never fail .
