This is a beautiful location with views across the Essex countryside, and the restaurant itself is quaint and well presented. However, waiting 20 minutes to be acknowledged and place a coffee order seemed a little disconcerting, and the tardiness and lack of customer engagement continued, resulting in the food order arriving just within the hour! I appreciate the clearly stated policy of everything being freshly cooked, and therefore a delay is inevitable, but this whole enterprise felt self indulgent and appeared to lack any real customer focus. That said, the food was very good.

Visiting friends who live in the village and they took us here for breakfast. To be greeted by 3 gorgeous dogs and friendly staff was wonderful. Breakfast was freshly cooked and absolutely delicious. Will definitely be back! Thank you.

Having enjoyed several visits here in the past, sadly I shall not be returning. Whilst waiting for my friend to arrive the owner confronted me in the middle of the cafe as he said I shouldn't be parked where I was and that I had run over one of his cones in the car park (I had spoken to a member of staff on arrival who told me he didn't know what the cones were there for and I was fine to park there) I offered to pay for the damaged cones and he said quite aggressively "no, just move your car". I felt very humiliated, especially as I was on my own and this was in front of other customers. Needless to say I moved my car and went elsewhere.

We took three friends from Italy, and they and we could not have enjoyed ourselves more. We had an excellent afternoon tea, traditional in many ways but with lots of imaginative touches. Stuart, the proprietor, made us very welcome. We really appreciated the way in which he explained everything to our guests. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was first-class, as was the service. My wife broke a teapot, but it was dealt with without fuss. A real highlight of our Italian visitors' visit to the U.K..

I found Poppy's Barn online and hired a space to have afternoon tea with 17 guests as a baby shower. Throughout the process, Stuart and the team were incredibly attentive and provided a fantastic service. When we did pop to the venue for lunch to sample some food, Stuart took time to come and speak with us to get an idea of what we wanted, how timings would work and to show us the space. On the day the staff were really helpful, allowing us to decorate the space how we wished and making sure we had everything we needed. They were able to cater to many dietary requirements to a very high standard, those with dietary requirements did not feel like they were missing out at all which is often the way in other places. The attached picture of the dairy free (!!) afternoon tea speaks for itself - it was beautifully presented and tasted amazing. The whole event went very smoothly thanks to Stuart and his team, so thank you very much. Definitely a spot I would highly recommend for a lunch, afternoon tea or weekend coffee if you are in the area.

This is a place by virtue of its location you want to go to. It’s a very pleasant outlook over fields. The layout is nicely eclectic. The staff are friendly and approachable. The coffees and accompaniments were great. There is an extensive menu. It’s a laid back place that has resident dogs that reflect the overall relaxed ambiance of the place.

We visited Poppy’s to celebrate a friend’s birthday. This was the best afternoon tea I’d ever had. Being gluten free the options are usually limited but I had 6 different sandwiches, 2 types of scones and 7 different types of cake - all of which were delicious. The selection of teas and coffees was huge and all were bottomless. The staff were really friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend a visit to Poppy‘s.

A wonderful, very special restaurant. We had a fantastic afternoon tea in celebration of a milestone birthday. The quality of the sandwiches, cakes and scones was outstanding with much careful thought given to the presentation and flavour combinations. But what makes this place so wonderful is the fantastic team. Poppys Barn really is a gem and worth a visit be it for breakfast; lunch or afternoon tea. We had such a lovely time and everyone was so positive about the occasion, the delicious food, the friendly team and the beautiful venue

Very friendly service, lovely coffee and delicious cake. Dropped in for the first time as a cycling coffee stop, and was not disappointed. Came during a week day, so it was quiet, but was greeted as soon as I started locking up my bike at the many dedicated bike racks. Very cosy inside (welcome on a very autumnal day), and served a very generous portion of bread pudding, which came decorated with fruit and a flower. Unexpected but lovely touch. Toilet was absolutely immaculate. Overheard that it's best to book at weekends as it gets busy. Will definitely be back!

We have often used this for a coffee & cake stop on our Sunday morning cycle, but today not only had the coffee gone up in price £4.25 for an Americano, they add a 15% service charge because we are a group of more than six. I kind of get the price increase, but a service charge... its coffee and cake, its low touch in terms of service. Our group of 10 spent £94, not all of us had cake and were sat outside for all of 40 minutes. The cycling social media is a buzz about it, i doubt we'll be returning anytime soon.

It’s a mixed tale. Me, my partner and 7 yr old daughter ordered the charity cream tea and two brioche buns (one sausage and I sausage and egg). I was asked how I wanted my egg, which was a nice touch. I asked for soft (love a runny yolk) Tea and milkshake arrived and then…nothing. 45 mins later I chased our food up to be told it was on its way and that they were very busy! The food arrived. The egg was hard. The 4 sausages that took 3/4 hour to cook were good. The scone too. We’d drank all the tea and milkshake by now. The table next to us, upon hearing our wait, queried their food. Same story. Long wait because they were busy. Hmm. My question is this. If you are *so busy* that you can’t do 4 sausages in 45 mins, why take the order? If you’re that backed up, why not tell customers *before* they order. The food is good quality and the place is evidently popular, but the management / communication lets it down. Shame. We were given 10% off the bill without asking, by way of apology. Fine, but I’d rather have fed my daughter a lot earlier.

My family and I visited Poppy’s for afternoon tea for our birthday celebrations. This tearoom did not disappoint. The food was fresh, beautifully presented and plenty to go around. We enjoyed tasting the selection of tea and coffee on the menu. I think between us we tried them all. The staff went above and beyond the whole time we were there and made us feel relaxed and welcome. Nothing was too much for any of them. Even whilst on her lunch break Amber come to the rescue after my Nan had a small fall. You all made our birthday celebrations so special and we cannot wait to return very soon.

This is a lovely cafe - charming young, enthusiastic and friendly staff, excellent service, delicious food and coffee, out in the country, a strong local clientele. In short, the sort of place you don’t want others to hear about lest they get swamped! We had one minor glitch with tepid coffee (drinkable, though) which was sorted second time round. We’ll be back and back and back.

Nice food. The service was the issue. A very cold day, 6 tables were available throughout our 45mins we were there (we checked / counted as no one came and no one left) but yet they still made us sit outside because they were “fully booked” to have a quick brunch, which we said we wouldn’t take that long, as it was our first date together since having a new born 5 months ago!! Many places would offer a table until a certain booked time, and say it’s limited but would have to leave before people arrive. Totally inflexible and even after our brunch to have a quick cake indoors, on a ‘unreserved’ table might I add, they still said no and went to take the cakes outside, IN THE COLD! Ridiculous attitude!

Went back to Poppys barn for the second time yesterday with two friends. One of the friends works at a popular Ware establishment on the afternoon tea team and she commented on the fact that Poppys Barn afternoon teas and head and shoulders over anything she has ever served. Well done Amber, Peter, Suzy and team for having such high standards, creativity and variety. The best gluten free and dairy free afternoon tea you could ask for. Another friend is pescatarian who was catered for individually too. Highly recommend, make sure to book a couple of weeks in advance especially if you have dietary requirements so they can organise the wonderful selection for you. Going back again with another new group of people, and looking forward to it
