Poppins in North Dorset

Poppins is now called the Rose Cafe the food i hot plentiful and they are accommodating for swaps i love cold baked beans.

I have eaten here a few times and the service is always fast and food hot - ate lunch there this afternoon and was at the counter paying which gave me a clear view of the kitchen area. I saw the cook pick up a portion of french fries with his bare hand and place them onto a plate with other food - I raised this with the young lady at the checkout whose only comment was 'How else do you pick up chips?' I certainly will not be eating there again

Driven in by heavy rain in the High Street at lunchtime today, we thought we would try a place we had walked past a 1000 times. As soon as we stepped in to a warm welcome and glanced around we realised we had been missing out on an American Diner experience not obvious from the pavement. One section of the large (and I mean physically big) menu with a small counterpart menu for the children, offered an All Day Breakfast. These included An American Breakfast complete with Maple syrup. We ordered one of those and a Vegetarian breakfast. Drinks were served first. Service was good and we did not have to wait long for two very good breakfasts on seriously large plates. The artwork hanging on the wall helped create the illusion of being in the States and worked well with the clean red paint decor and metal trimmed service counter. The bill for two came to £14.50 and we will definately be back to try the fish (Cod or Plaice) and chips.

Came here for breakfast as it is fairly local and thought we'd give it a try. It was very busy so thought it must be a good place to eat. Unfortunately I was wrong. Drank the worst tea I've ever had, it was so weak & tasted nasty, I've had nicer in a truckers layby. We both had a full English breakfast and you could taste it was the absolute cheapest food bought in, it was not nice at all so unfortunately we will not be going back.

This cafe is amazing, great value for money. Great food & lovely staff :) such a great atmosphere. Always use it :)

I visited Gillingham in Dorset on a hot September day - although this delightful town is only 40 minutes drive away I had never gone there before. First up (because TA search results get confused about this), this is Gillingham in Dorset and not the town of the same name in Kent. I decided to dine at Poppins cafe in the High St. This is a reasonably sized cafe (about 50 seats) with an extensive menu of traditional English fare with a nice illustrated menu. I chose a brunch at £5.50 with a cappuccino to drink. The waitress service was efficient and the food was lovely. There is some rather pleasant background music but I would advise you not to sit at a seat directly under the ceiling-mounted loudspeakers. This cafe has a 5* 'scores on the doors' hygiene rating. It also has a small customer toilet which was very clean. Recommended.
