Poppies Cafe in South Lakeland

We were on holiday staying with friends in Cumbria and we all decided to go to Ulverston initially to see the Druid circle at Birkrigg common. Afterwards we decided to find somewhere for a coffee and snack in the town. Luckily we came across Poppies first and decided to give it a try. It looked clean and we were made welcome as soon as we walked in. We all ordered coffee and sandwiches and the service was fantastic. The coffee arrived first which was lovely and soon after the well presented plates of home made food were placed Infront of us. I couldn't fault anything neither could my wife or our friends it was delicious, home made coleslaw, home baked bread beautiful salad dressing. We left feeling full and contented and we were pleasantly surprised by the value for money when our bill arrived. 10/10 next time we go to Ulverston it will be to go back to Poppies! Just to say our next visit to Poppies was yet again another fantastic experience. I had a breakfast this time which was one of the best l have had all quality ingredients and the homemade rosti was amazing. My wife had eggy bread with a choice of toppings which she said was lovely. Once again 10/10.

Delicious vegan breakfast! The sausages and hash browns were made in their kitchen (not pre-frozen commercial ones) and were ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! Instead of an egg (the veggie breakfast) they replaced it with really nicely cooked broccoli. The whole meal was so good and the people working there were extremely kind and lovely. I will definitely be returning the next time I'm in the area.

Food very nice more bistro than cafe style. Really well presented and beautifully cooked and tasty for the price didn't mind a bit of a wait for food as all cooked to order . Desserts were homemade but i didn't have any room will definitely go back the breakfasts looked very nice also that we're being served . The only downside is space you probably best booking as it's so popular .

Me and a friend went for a meal here on the 24th February. It was absolutely divine and scrumptious! I would definitely recommend booking here.

My first time at Poppies, got to say I was really impressed, great little cafe! Coffee was nice as well as the food. I had the bacon rosti and my wife had the gluten free eggy bread. Really good choice for gluten free and they were happy to accommodate for your dietary requirements and didn't make you feel like you were putting them out or there was something wrong with you. Will be going back when next in Ulverston.

Nice breakfast very hot which is rare these days. The staff are all so lovely. Place is nice and clean. Very reasonably priced.

Good lunch spot. Good for vegetarians & meat eaters both. Tasty food well presented. I had a mushroom rosti stack with grilled halloumi that came with broccoli on the side. Nice & tasty but the rosti was very greasy. Food was £11 per head.

Cancelled my pre booked table 4 days before because they got another booking for a large party and couldn't fit us both in (my booking had been booked for well over a month) they lost quite a few regular customers by making that move!

Walked past 'Poppie's may times ban decided to go in today. What a gem of a place. I chose ' veggie breakfast' - It was delicious. The staff are so nice and no one minded how long we stayed. I am so looking forward to going again soon !

This is a small cafe/restaurant with only a few tables. It's cosy, warm & the food is all fresh & made to order so expect a wait but it's worth it. Definitely worth a visit.

Basic offering but basic is no good after 230pm when they stop serving Service wasn’t spectacular but adequate for what was offered Tea was ok scones average at best .a few nice decor details though…would I return, yes but not in a hurry ….

Must be clear that the food is good as is the service: but it is far too cramped for comfort! Has always been quite tight as it's a small cafe, however the new owners (I presume) completely refurbished a couple of years ago with the biggest and chunkiest chairs and tables possible! So to get through the staff are squeezing between people and there really is only a thigh's width between tables and between the backs of chairs, even when they are pulled right in. It makes me really hesitant to return, which is a shame. With much lighter style chairs and tables it would feel 100 times better.

Absolutely amazing food for the Christmas banquet menu tonight. Staff were fab too. Lovely start to Christmas celebrations.

Managed to book in at short notice with a table of 13. Amazing, freshly made food with beautiful presentation. Superb, friendly & attentive staff. Well done to the chef who managed to cook almost 13 different dishes to perfection and to the waitress who expertly delivered them to each person without asking who'd ordered what. Thanks for looking after us so well!

Phoned on the off chance we could get a table for 6, short notice. They managed to fit us in. Service was excellent by the two ladies at front of house. Food also excellent. Full English breakfast was faultless. The other meals ordered were also excellent. My first time there, but definitely not my last. Great value for money too.

Came here with my friends and the staff were really good but the food was not nice at all the rosti tasted like cold cup of tea (sounds weird but the best i can describe) the eggs were fully cooked (poached) and the milkshake didn’t even have any taste not even milk

The food here is absolutely delicious, you need to book at night due to limited space. The staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble, well worth a visit, but do book at night to avoid disappointment.

I love to come here for breakfast with my friend for catch ups once in a while, and hands down, it's the best breakfast in Ulverston, there are others which are good, but poppies just tops it 😋 can't beat there full English. I also came with my son for lunch, I am very fussy when it comes to steak, but I tried the steak and salad here, I was not disappointed, it was so tasty and flavourful, I'm craving it again, so I will be back soon as I can for another 😍 my son also loved his open sandwich with seafood, he said it was very tasty. The staff are always super friendly and smiley, very helpful and all round lovely. My favourite cafe.

Without a reservation, we were lucky to find a table available. We ordered hot chocolate and a flat white, a large full English breakfast, sea bass, eggs Benedict, and eggy bread. The overall dining experience was excellent, with attentive service and generous portions of delicious food. The sea bass, in particular, was very fresh. If you're in the area, I definitely recommend giving it a try!

well what an absolute treat this was today .we went for afternoon tea for myself and my friends birthday that we have this week,this was the nicest i have ever had so if you get the chance to visit i would really recommend.what a lovely selection of freshly made sandwiches made into a flower shape and a really good selection of cakes and savory,with tea or coffee. it was very well presented and very professional .the 2 girls serving Vicky and ? sorry i didn't get her name were very polite and top class service nothing was to much trouble for them.i have to give everything 5 stars .i can not wait to return thank you xx

I called in advance to book breakfast for a group of 15 after hearing how good the food was. They kindly reserved two large tables for us which took up most of their seating area but staff were really accommodating, professional and helpful. The food did not disappoint and won't find a better breakfast spot in the South of Cumbria.

Absolutely amazing little cafe. We were super happy to be fitted in right at the end of lunch service, and although we were the only ones in there the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The food was incredible; highly recommend the wild mushrooms on toast and the mushroom toastie. They were happy to do vegan options. I'd go back to Ulverston just for Poppies.

I rarely give 5 stars for food but today, here, it is warranted. I arrived 5 minutes before service ended but was warmly welcomed in. I went for Poppies Breakfast but the quality, quantity and presentation blew me away. Tea for one in a pot was perfect and the service was friendly. I understand the chef was named Hannah. Hannah did a wonderful job. Exceptional.

We did not visit cafe but Steve came and catered at Dunnerholme Golf Club for Lady Captains day what a fabulous meal he provided we came all the way from Luton and was very impressed with the lovely service he provided excellent well done Steve . Regards Jean & Steve

You've got to visit Poppies. The food is absolutely wonderful. There is always an excellent choice, especially given the small size of the place. We love it here and wish we could visit more often. Highly recommended.

Superb little cafe. Food was made gluten free on request and the rosti was delicious. Meats were locally sourced and also very good quality. We went on Saturday lunchtime for brunch and we're going to return for tea but they had closed. Never mind!

If you come to Ulverston it’s a no brainer but to come to Poppies. From the breakfast to the dinner you will not find a restaurant better. Service is on point with such friendly staff and not to forget the most amazing food presented so perfectly!

Last minute dash to Ulverston,and lucky to get Lunch for 3 of us in Poppies,We have tried before,but we could not get in. Huge success,great cuisine and charming staff.

3rd time here and every time has been spot on. Always been for breakfast, always cleared the plate.. could maybe do with another egg 🐽 Nobody has ever had a complaint, staff always friendly and will always aim to cater for you if somethings not on the menu. I definitely advise booking as it’s only a small place. An evening menu is available a couple of nights a week.. looks good and pretty sure we will be checking it out next time we are up there.

We absolutely loved this place so much so we went twice in during our 3 day break! The breakfast was the best breakfast I’ve ever had anywhere , you could tell everything on the plate was freshly sourced and cooked with care. I could not find fault in anything the coffee was fab and so was the orange juice.

An absolute pleasure talking eat here! Really delicious home cooked food with delightful attention to detail and very attentive staff, just an excellent experience all round. I would strongly advise booking in advance however, the bistro is quite small and so table space is limited. It is absolutely worth it however. A must visit when in Ulverston!

Excellent standard breakfast, initially looked like a small breakfast on the plate, how wrong can you be, it was really filling and the rosti was extremely good.

I had a long, 28 year, overdue reunion with with two friends from school in Poppies yesterday, and we could not have met in a better place! - welcoming cosy cafe atmosphere, with hipster restaurant standard food. The quality of service, food and atmosphere was delightful all round.

We went to Poppies for and evening for the first time this week. We go regularly for Saturday lunch, and other days for coffee and snacks. The evening experience was top notch the food was excellent and very reasonably priced. Poppies is definately a must go place for us in the future, it's absolutely lovely.

Well where do I start Poppies is a beautiful small cosy restaurant. well presented food that tasted amazing. One of the nicest meals I’ve ever had! Me and my girl friends had 3 courses for £28 each and wow it was well worth it. We will be returning.! Ps the Bread is something else!

Lovely cafe. Good atmosphere and great food

I went with my family this evening for my first time although my family have been a few times. They gave this place high expectations and let me say it was far beyond that. Without a doubt one of the best if not the best meals I have ever had. Value for money is incredible. The whole experience was fantastic to the staff, service and atmosphere!

There were 10 of us last Friday. Excellent evening. Food was superb. Lovely touch of a complimentary nibbles board, all home made, while food was prepared. Service was spot on. It is a small place and has big chunky tables n chairs. Well worth a revisit

Everything from the vibe to food and drinks was excellent during our dinner. This was our first time in Ulverston and what a delight it was to find this cafe. Especially enjoyed our pork trio and complimentary bread platter was gorgeous.

Well, yes out on travels again. Today we went to Ulverston. We had looked up this café on the internet and decided to visit. It's snug inside but very welcoming. I decided on eggy bread ( yes ) I added tomato mushroom and bacon ....

Had lunch at Poppies.. avocado on toast with coffee and homemade lemonade. Absolutely perfect. The service was really good, as is the decor and atmosphere. It's small and compact but lovely. We're planned to do an evening meal.

Poppies catered for our family celebration of 24 people, and we could not recommend them enough. As ever, the food was excellent. They were also extremely flexible, both in terms of the menu, and adapting to changes even at the last minute. Thank you for helping to make our event memorable.

Revisited a year after our first trip, all just as good, we had a lovely breakfast but glad we booked as all tables reserved and used!

The food here is outstanding. Beautifully presented and delicious at a very reasonable price. Pork roulade was very tasty, raspberry lemonade is so fresh and zingy all finished with a cortado. Definitely coming back one evening soon

We attended one of Poppies evening nights in June and it was Devine. The food was presented beautifully and both dishes tasted amazing. The sharing complimentary nibble starter went down a treat (not pictured) and the service was perfect! Very attentive and friendly. Looking forward to returning to try another monthly menu.

Had a lovely lunch today at Poppies in Aldbury. It’s located in the British Legion Hall and although a private business, very much supports this charity. It seems to be a very ‘green’ cafe with all cups, plates and utensils being recycled as is any...
