Our first family visit to a Thai restaurant, the food was fantastic, very authentic. We shared a starter platter and then had main meals. All delicious. Service was friendly but as it was getting busy with walk ins and take aways they were often a little distracted. The garden area was beautiful and would definitely recommend booking a table out there for the evening. Remember in Thai time food is not a fast experience, one to relax and enjoy!

It was our fourth meal at Poonthais. The food is very good but service can be a little chaotic. Don't choose this restaurant if you are in a rush but if you are out for a long relaxing evening and you want decent food at a fair price then do pay it a visit. We shall go again.

Arrived at 8pm not booked but given a table in the garden area which was really nice had a drink and ordered—-40 mins later still no food or sign of staff—a small number of tables occupied none of whom had food Complained and was told they were busy!! Food finally arrived two Pad Thai which were cold A waste of time and money I am guessing their take away service is taking priority over seated customers———so avoid!!!

We walked in off the street. Surprisingly cute little business. Restaurant decor is a bit dated along with the piano instrumental music, but don’t let it put you off. Good service. Very tasty Thai food (coming from a family that has frequently visited Thailand). Well priced. Enjoyed our meal.

As soon as I spotted this place on our arrival in North Berwick, I was desperate to try it out. Our kids aren’t fans of Thai food so we opted for a takeaway. It was delicious and I would definitely recommend. I arrived a bit early to order as I didn’t realise they didn’t open until 6 but they were still happy to serve me and I sat in peace for 20 mins waiting for the food to be made. It was well worth the wait, and reasonably priced too.

We love Tai cuisine & we’re looking forward to trying this Tai restaurant in North Berwick. Service was good, however of the 2 main courses that we had, only 1 part ( fish) tasted freshly made & hot . The noodles that came with it were barely warm, & the other main course ( mixed prawn /meat noodle dish) was unappetising to look at & was very dry & barely warm.Considering that the restaurant was very quiet, only the fish seemed freshly cooked . So disappointed with our overall experience.

My wife and I ordered for collection as there were limited options for takeaway in North Berwick, and the restaurant looked nice from the outside. When we opened up the food, it was very unappetising. On tasting it, the flavour was nice, but the curry sauce was very thick and claggy. The chilli sauce with our sides was very thin and a couple of the prawn crackers were a bit chewy, bordering on stale. I wouldn't go back, and would probably choose a good ready meal from a supermarket instead, or just get fish and chips from nearby.

Oh dear, one of our favourite restaurants has definitely gone downhill. The single server struggled to keep up with serving several tables and the food was only so-so. We asked for the dessert menu only to be told brusquely that "we haven't made any" desserts, so my favourite black rice with coconut sauce was out of the question. It was a real problem trying to get the server's attention as she spent most time in the kitchen dealing with takeaway orders.

We’ve used poonthais for some time but have noticed the amount in the takeaway containers have reduced over time. I stopped buying my favourite meal as I kept getting half a container and felt let down. I then swapped to another meal and lo and behold both this and my wife’s were both half empty. It’s a shame as the food is very good but It’s not cheap and you shouldn’t be left wishing they had filled the other half. Let’s hope next time is better

Vegetarians beware!! I had a look at the menu before going in to the place and noticed that there weren’t many vegetarian alternatives. I did go in and asked if they had tofu or other meat alternatives. They said yes. I ordered a Kao Pad with tofu. It was disgusting. I felt i was eating tomato tasting boiled rice with curried deep fried tofu, sliced fresh cucumbers and tomato. When I complained I was offered an alternative which I refused as I felt that the veggie options were more a token service but said I did not want to pay for the main dish. They refused to let me leave without paying for everything as this is how they served their Kao Pad. I have now googled the recipe and this should be a thai chili rice dish that yes contains tomatoes but not what i got.

We had 3 different starters and 3 mains and couldn’t fault it at all. The order was taken efficiently by phone and repeated back to ensure it was correct. Mmmmm fish in green or red Currie is basically is battered haddock or cod from the next door chippy and smothered in what looks like a jar of Thai curry. Awful! Spicey noodles are so hot you can't eat them. No veg or meat in the noodles, like a bad instant noodle with the hottest chilli YouCan find. Lacking in many ways. Mixed starter tastes and looks like a party mix from Aldi. No longer a BYOB. Drinks selection terrible. Bitten by..... guess.... what..... mosquitos, when in back garden. Maybe they introduced them to add a bit of Thailand, cause the food certainly aint authentic. Avoid! Don't know how they are still open TBH.

Myself and my family have been coming to this restaurant on and off for around 20 years, and the family owned business was by far the best place we had ever been to. They produced a first class buffet for my mum's 80th at her friends house. In the past year, since my mum moved back we have had 3 to 4 takeaways and in all honesty the quality overall is pretty poor and tonight was the finaliser. My partner and I went to the restaurant to order and collect to be met by a young Scottish boy, first to be told there are no takeaway menus and we can order from the window or Facebook, wierd but OK since every other place seemed to manage menu's. I let that go due to possible covid reasons, I was then told 45 mins to prepare the order, seems a long time to wait but again, let it go as usually the longer the wait the better the chances it's freshly cooked. Got our order and for some unknown reason the sauce came in a tub with the fish by itself in a container. That's certainly new to the menu. We got home and my partner started eating his dinner. The fish was not haddock and was wrapped in plastic!!! I phoned the restaurant and the girl was very nice and offered to refund us for the trouble. Then a few minutes later the Scottish boy phoned, asking if he could have the fish with the plastic still wrapped in it back, when they came out with the refund. I told them well no he's eaten the fish but they could have the plastic. Finally the girl phoned back to tell me without the fish in the plastic, her Boss wouldn't refund it. She was adamant at first it's been the same owner, in which case he would have known me or at least his wife does. I was so angry at bieng treated like a criminal, we drove back down and I gave her the bag with the tub and the plastic in it. Told her the place is not the same as from what I remember and it's crap how they treat people. She apparently was ignoring me while she looked through the bag and the young Scottish boy stood gawping. Not one apology between them. I doubt we will be back anytime soon, they have really let what was once the best restaurant in my opinion in East Lothian.

Pandemic lockdown has been tough for all restaurants in North Berwick. Poonthais has continued to offer good quality Thai food for delivery or collection. Quality has risen as restrictions have eased. Our recent banquet for two was a delight with starters including wonderful fish cakes with chilli fish sauce, main courses minced pork in red curry and fried noodles with beef and green beans in chilli.Regulars from days of yore will be pining for a return to being able to enjoy meals in the lovely garden area at the back of the restaurant, currently (and sadly) take away only.

On a day trip to North Berwick I came across this place. It looked fine but.... I ordered fish & chips which was supposed to come with a cup of tea. I opted for coffee after being offered this. When my lunch arrived it was barely a child's portion. Very small fish sitting on top of a few chips. The steam from the chips made the batter very soggy. Frozen carrots and beans did nothing to improve matters. The light in the toilet was so dim it was impossible to determine if the place was clean. Also, the access to the toilet area is up a couple of steps so not suitable for those reliant on wheelchairs. To top it all I was charged extra for the coffee. I will not be back!

As a group of eight lads, we were made to feel less than welcome when half of our party arrived only to find that the manager had doubled booked and claimed to not have our booking. After this showdown with the other guests, which was resolved by them backing down and agreeing to dining outside in the heated "beer garden" (no small feat for 8pm in mid October in North Berwick), there was a slight delay in taking our order. However, I put this down to there being two large parties to accommodate. Once our orders were taken we got our food quite quickly, and it was of good quality with fresh ingredients and nice flavours. The only other drawback was they ran out of beer, but allowed us to go next door to buy some from the Co-Op. It is the sort of thai restaurant that has that cosy, front room feel to it, which you either love or hate. We all loved it and would definitely come back.

We were very excited to try this restaurant as the reviews in general seem really good. It is hard to get really good Asian food of any kind in East Lothian and although the Lanna Thai in Musselbrugh is decent it's not great so we were delighted to read such good reviews about the Poonthai. We ordered food to take away hoping for the best, however I can honestly say it was the worst take away I've tasted. The portions were ridiculously small; even the rice was only half filled! How tight do you have to be to skimp on rice? We order chips for our little girl and they were a strange cold, rubbery texture as if they had been reheated from days before. The green curry was not delicious, creamy or rich in flavour - instead it tasted like curry paste with stock cubes and milk. The vegetables were boiled to an unappetising mush and the fried noodles were watery with no flavour at all . The vegetable spring rolls were nothing short of vile - they were clearly days old; hard and chewy with the bean sprouts having turned to a brown mush and smelling of damp rot. They were also just wrapped in a bit of tinfoil which somehow made them even more unappealing. The food was so dreadful (and not cheap!) that we chucked it and the anger at being so blatantly ripped off prompted me to write this review. Nothing would tempt me to eat there again, especially when there are some really great restaurants in North Berwick.

It was a pleasure to take our visiting son-in-law for a meal at one of our favourite North Berwick restaurants. The success of the restaurant was evident on a very busy evening, with several groups of family and friends dining together in the unique garden setting that the owners of Poonthais have worked so hard to create over the years. Good service when there were many to be served, and good food. We had old favourites of ours such as chicken soup with thai herbs and lime leaves, followed by chicken green curry, prawn Pad thaI (such fresh prawns) and fried noodles with seasonal vegetables and beef (Guae Teaow Laad Na). The Chang Thai beer was cold but not quite as good as Singha beer. Diners were happy and sometimes attempted to burst into song. Such polite, tactful and efficient service. We've been here few times and food didn't disappoint us. We both order starter as we always do. My boyfriend have chicken curry with pineapple and coconut and He loves it. The food was great and really taste authentic. We eat at the back garden and was quite only became noisy when a group went f woman came with their wine and started to get sober. Other than that, still our place to eat every time we visit town.

Fringe by the sea time. Bombskare night and we convened as always for a fabulous night of jigging in the spiegel tent. That was great as usual. This year we opted for eating at Poonthais for a change. We were outside undercover (13 of us including Irene and me). Food and service were both excellent. Of course the company was top notch as always. Got sore legs rather than hangover today.

We were offered a table outside- on a rainy night we were very hesitant. However, we were pleasantly surprised with a covered and heated area adorned with Thai decorations and water features. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. The food was excellent, good value for money and could not fault the experience.

Service was excellent with our servers being very friendly and attentive. I loved my chicken satay starter. My main meal was pan fried salmon in a red Thai curry sauce. It was tasty but parts of the salmon felt over cooked and rubbery at the edges. Hubby enjoyed his soup and fried rice dish although maybe too much on the spicy side

Birthday meal for my wife, booked a table for 10 in the garden section. Very nice surroundings with a real authentic Thai feel. The food was delicious and a real treat to taste Thai food cooked well. Even though the restaurant was busy that night we did not have to wait long for our order to be taken and for the food to be served. A really nice place to eat and to be with friends and family. The staff are great also, really helpful and always there to help you choose a dish. Kids x 3 (6 to 13 years old) were well catered for also with English dishes. My wife and sister in law loved the food, and that says a lot because they are Thai. Would recommend the restaurant to all, we will defo be back.

First time at this restaurant and ordered takeaway. Whilst the Thai Green curry was tasty there was only 5 very small pieces of chicken and the rest of the container was filled with a mass of watery sauce and 2 small pieces of aubergine . My first time ordering there and my last! Very disappointing for the money!

It is always a pleasure to dine in the lovingly tended garden at Poonthais. There are now good photographs of the garden contributed by other reviewers on Tripadvisor. The family have created a unique space (in a challenging climate!) which is deservedly popular with locals and tourists alike. Very much advisable to call and book ahead. On our recent visit we asked for a set banquet, and as always appreciated the freshness and quality of the seafood sourced by the restaurant. Other dishes included were red curry, noodles and mixed vegetables. Many of the staff have worked at the restaurant for years, and we never fail to admire their courtesy and their patience with the clientele. It is a very special place!

We had dinner here recently on a Saturday evening. The restaurant is very small with a central aisle and tables set very closely together against the side walls. People came in constantly to collect their take-aways and had no option but to stand in the main aisle very close to the diners and wait there. It was very uncomfortable and claustrophobic. The main door to the restaurant opened and closed every few minutes - not at all a relaxing dining experience. One of the waitresses (which we didn't get) was friendly - the other one (which we did get) was the opposite and quite rude. The menu was extensive - half the size would suffice. We ordered two of Poonthais Specials -. 'Gaeng Phed Ped Yang' - breast of Duck lightly grilled in a rich sauce... and the 'Beef Stew Thai Style' - tender slices of beef with ginger and Thai spices. Both dishes were awful. The Duck came drowned in a bowl of pink sauce. It was tough and overcooked with no flavour. The beef was in chunks, grey in colour, tough and with no taste whatsoever, served in a bowl with a brown, watery, tasteless liquid. Having eaten in many Thai restaurants in Scotland the the rest of the world I have never eaten anything like this before and hope to never do so again. Sorry Poonthais but it is time for a big change to be made in your kitchen, restaurant lay-out - and your staff.

Having visited Poonthais a couple of times, we popped recently for lunch and were met with the usual warm, friendly welcome. The food here will certainly fill you up and is tasty. We don't stay local though and I wouldn't make a point of coming to North Berwick just for this restaurant, as while tasty, there are others offering similar quality elsewhere.I recently ordered the chicken satay as my main dish but wish I had opted for this to be my starter option as it is rather a lot of chicken, my fellow diners had red currys and fish which looked delicious.

What a great place to eat. From the outside it's maybe not the most inviting of restaurants, but surely it's the food that matters most.Fairly basic tables and interior, but again it's the food that matters. We had lunch and loved it, very friendly and helpful staff.Sweet & sour fish with noodles was simply awesome, it'll be hard to find anything else on the menu I would pick to beat this fish. Thai green curry was also ordered, simply a fantastic dish.We were thinking of trying one of the other restaurants on the High Street, but so glad we went for this choice. 4 of us in the party and all ordered so something different and we all loved what we had. What more can you ask for. Very reasonable prices too.

Been dining here since it opened a long time ago and Poonthais has never disappointed. The food is excellent (ask for spicy if you want the full Thai experience) and the staff are lovely. They cater well for vegetarians and the Som Tam starter is amazing. Excellent value for money and you never wait too long for food.

The food here is probably up there with the best Thai food and staff where amazingly friendly as Thai people often are. We had the Mixed starters which were stunning. We were really surprised by how it wasn't busy on a Saturday night and can only assume as north berwick has become a bit of a trendy place to come that this place gets ignored. Please IGNORE the neon open side outside and the plain interior and don't compare with other places near by.... go it's amazing and I genuinely feel sad that they don't get the clientele they should. If unsure try it out reasonable prices too. You won't be disappointed.

We stumbled across this great wee place having failed to find a table anywhere else in North Berwick and were delighted we did. Food was beautiful, perfect level of spiciness, bright colourful stir-fried pork and veg, great thai curry and charming service. Would definitely go back.

Fancied a Thai, or Chinese - looked in window when passing through day, and it wasn't particularly fancy, but decided to give it a go having read the reviews. So glad we did, the staff were lovely, and the food was excellent. Really reasonable pricing. Our only problem was there was too much choice so it was difficult actually choosing what to have!! Really would recommend highly. I had Chicken Massaman Curry and it was lovely.

We regularly go here, but only in the summer when the weather allows us to relax in the rear courtyard. There are heaters outside for those of hardier disposition, and some seats are covered.Inside is less than inviting in terms of décor/atmosphere.I am prompted to review since although we like our visits, and enjoy the food, we were underwhelmed this time by portion size. The dishes are often just meat or fish in a `soup`, and our chicken dish had only five small pieces, and the prawn dish only six prawns. This does not make for a `night out` or special meal, particularly if you get the prompt service which sometimes is just too prompt.

This is a little restaurant which appears to try hard. They have a menu which caters for traditional food and a menu for Thai.We had the Thai food and have to say I was disappointed with what I had, the order was wrong, portion size small for the price charged and if I am being honest it was tasty but should have been a lot better. To counter this my wife did enjoy her lunch. We were served by a friendly lady who appeared to be the owner - it looks a very hands on restaurant, however, the other waitress was not too friendly which is a shame as I think the effort they make is actually their best quality.Would I look to go back? Probably not, there are better places in the town to eat but it was acceptable

Decided to go here for lunch as we haven't been for quite some time. So glad we did, just as great as usual. The gardens to the rear of the premises are just superb, what a fantastic place to sit, eat lunch and just relax for a while.Very friendly and helpful staff, on hand to explain any of the menu you might just not be too sure about? I could guess at some of the Thai food, but just thought I'd better check before ordering. Really nice friendly people in here, always smiling and always ready to help. The food is gorgeous, very very good quality for the money. Maybe not quite fancy restaurant standards for presentation, but then this is not a fancy expensive restaurant. Great food, great staff and if you are with great company, simply a great place to spend some time. There is plenty of choice on the menu, but I highly recommend going for something you may not always go for, try something new. You never know, you could find your new favourite. We will of course be returning here, and I hope not leaving it so long before we do.

ordered red beef curry and minced pork in coconut N.Thai style. Food arrived very quickly and as suspected was not cooked in authentic style but the meat and veg was added to a sauce base rather than being cooked in the sauce from raw to get the best flavour. Sauces were very tasty, however dishes were small and needed more ingredient rather than more sauce
