Pizza Express in Plymouth

The lateness not too much of a problem, but the pizza was stone cold, with excessively floppy/undercooked base, greasy, and not at all crispy apart from the heavily blackened edges.

the delivery driver carried the pizza vertically so all the toppings fell off and were in a pile to one side of the box, really smart

The brucetta was really yummy, tasty and the same as I would expect in the restaurant. The pizza was smaller than I was expecting compared to being in the restaurant, it’s my fav pizza so I know how big it should be. The pieces with all the toppings on were yummy. There were 2 pieces without cheese?

All the toppings has been pushed to a quarter of the pizza, for £25 very disappointing

We arrived at 12:00, which is listed as half an hour after opening, yet the doors were locked. It was meant to be my 16th birthday lunch so I'm very disappointed :(

Always a reliable menu! Somehow this one lacked any charm and the service was slow but the lunch was delicious nevertheless.

04/05 ABBA Tribute at Pavilions, thought it would be heaving. No Service ok, great at first, took me 15 mins to get someone’s attention to pay the bill after they brought me it. By then, around 25 people in, 5 staff front of house? I had the tomatoes in oil, partner had chicken cooked in milk. Good. Two pizza ordered were just crap. Dry, overcooked, beef topping was just mince meat, ordered the slaw, no not got any. Kitchen obviously didn’t give a toss…. 2 x 0.0 small beers, glass of red, two soft drinks, OVER £81! Luckily I had £77 in Tesco Vouchers. Bella Italia beats this place hands down 2 stars for front if house, 0 for the kitchen. Won’t be going back that’s for sure.

Food was cold. I ordered extra mushrooms and onions on mine but there wasn't much on it, 2 of the slices had nothing on them at all.

For a little while now, we are almost-recent owners of a smartphone and have been attempting to come to terms with the PizzaExpress App. It isn't always that simple for us, although, after a little trial and error, we managed to log in to the WIFI etc. at PizzaExpress Plymouth Derry's Cross and log in to the new PizzaExpress App. It was excellent that, even though there was a relatively busy house, we were cheerfully ushered onto a spare table, in spite of the fact that we hadn't booked. What was also brilliant, was that the nice waitress almost immediately brought us a jug of drinking water and two glasses, (we hadn't even mentioned it) nice... Shortly after settling down at the waiting table, and after walking in, we enjoyed our tasty little starter drinks of Birra Peroni Nastro Azzurro and Soave D.O.C. After relaxing with our pre-dinner drinks, Olives Marinate and Slow-Roasted Tomatoes we pondered over the items listed on the menu, although we couldn't get it all to go right onto the app, (we're not so young anymore and not too smartphone-savvy etc.). Fortunately, the waitress helped us to come to terms with the PizzaExpress-app - on the phone, etc... A little while afterwards, we thoroughly enjoyed our selections of the Pollo Pesto (for my wife) and Funghi Di Bosco for me, lovely... Mary's wine with these delicious choices was the nice dry smooth, but slightly fruity Soave D.O.C., lovely...

Visited here weds 12th of March and managed to get a table luckily. We arrived at 6pm and waited 20 mins to order a drink , I had to prompt a waitress. We then ordered everything together and didn't eat until 7pm!!! A whole hour from when we arrived , not happy . We were not the only ones the only way to describe the place was chaos!!! There was two cooks on , a manager and one waitress, on a busy theatre night which you preempt as its perfect location for theatre goers . The food was lovely after the wait but I had to return my sons gluten free doppio dough balls , on the menu it said a double helping of dough balls with pesto , garlic butter and Harrisa.. we were given 5 dough balls with a side of butter? Why!! I then sent it back as I wasn't paying £10 for 5 dough balls. The manager then said its because you choose gf balls.. so why 5 and why no dips , being colieac then makes it drop from a generous serving to 5 and no dips ? Wouldn't rush back , apology was given for dough balls but not the service or the wait time.

Booked a table for 915pm , arrived at 917pm to be told the booking was cancelled because we were two minutes late . The ovens were already turned off . Despite driving 30 minutes to attend I guess the staff just wanted to go home.

Excellent on all fronts. We were going to the theatre so they made sure we got our food quickly. The food was excellent and service was outstanding from Sam. We will definitely be back soon. Thank you!

Rather a disappointment and possibly the worst Pizza Express that I have tried and I have been to many. They had run out of blue cheese, which affected two out of five orders. Then when the pizza arrived the covering was very sparse. Normally a four cheese pizza is very cheesy, these weren't. Once a Pizza Express stood for good tasty pizza and a cut above the other chains. It seems those days are gone. Then the building itself was just a large noise open space, again nothing like this company once stood for. Yes it was cheap and the staff were working hard, but that's not enough to tempt me back.

I want to make a comment about the manager in there called Sam. When we arrived he was exceptionally friendly and welcoming - to be honest I probably wouldn't have left a review had that just been the case. During our meal one of the waitresses dropped some glassware. He was immediately there with a brush and pan and he took charge of cleaning it up. He was so caring towards the waitress ensuring that she was ok and that she hadn't hurt herself. I know this might be something minor, but it really demonstrated what kind of a person he must be to work for. A great moment of leadership and management that I was privileged to see exists. It was the sort of thing that you can't teach people - you are either made that way or you aren't.

It's over priced pizza. What do you expect?

We visited as a table of 17. Adults and children and to say it was chaotic our end was an understatement especially with a very lively 2 and 4 year old. The gentleman who served us was so patient and extremely accomodating even with the kids been quite loud at times. Delicious food as usual we can never complain.

We went with our granddaughter for an early evening meal. We arrived at 16.05. We were told they were fully booked even though only two tables were in use. We went elsewhere had a lovely meal and at 17.30 we walked past the Pizza express. 90% of the tales were unused. Needless to say we will not be trying to use them again having been lied to.

Really enjoyed this restaurant today. Our server was very, very nice and friendly. Absolutely wonderful food! It was lovely, 100% will visit again.

My order simply didn’t arrive. 1.5 hours after I ordered my meal for, I got a notification saying it had been delivered but yet for the whole time it said my meal wasn’t even being prepared yet. So confused and will not be ordering from here again.

It would be good to have a more realistic time frame when ordering, our order was over an hour later than stated when we ordered

Food was very nice, slightly limited on gluten free options but almost all the pizzas could be made on a gluten free base. Service was quick and pleasant. When we went it was very quiet at around 12.15 lunchtime.

Not been there for years. Had the Pollo Pesto - their words NEW RECIPE Chicken, mushrooms, red onions, mozzarella and Gran Milano cheese with penne, béchamel and basil & pine kernel pesto. It came out not a particularly big portion which was fine but I was very disappointed with the lack of mushroom and chicken. After a poke around the plate to check it went back untouched. According to chef and manager it contained the half chicken breast and correct amount of mushrooms as per recipe. END OF CONVERSATION. Didnt even bother to chuck a handful of mushrooms on just straight return to customer. Mushrooms very scant and couldnt taste at all. Will not be returning.

Ordered a takeaway Ignoring the fact I’d eaten half of it (very hungry), this was the state of the bruschetta, if you’ve ordered one before you’ll know the tomato normal come finely chopped with onion, I called and they said they couldn’t refund me; I’d have to contact customer service due to ordering on the app, spoke to them but not happy with how it was handled, hard work

One & a half hour waiting for delivery. Grumpy Just Eat delivery man. Received one wrong pizza (meat pizza for vegetarian!) & one wrong side dish. All of food cold.

Great food and service I had the spicy sausage calone and it was really good, took my grandson and they were really good with him. Overall, it's a great pizzeria

In the last 2 days I have ordered 4 times and had only 1 delivery and 1 refund it would be good if the other 2 refunds were made soonest - please.

Absolutely disgusting takeaway, driver had stored the boxes on their side so all the toppings fell out except a tiny bit left in the corner of the box. Paid almost £30 for two flat dough bases with the remnants of a bit of tomato sauce. Appalling, and didn't want to hear my complaint or rectify.

Grabbed some great food from this Pizza express today with my friend. The staff were so friendly and helpful especially Gemma and Sam. The food was absolutely delicious! Will definitely be going back again :)

Absolutely shocking, of the two pizzas only 3 slices had cheese and toppings on them - it was just dough and tomato. Was delivered on their side, all the sauces had seeped through the boxes and half the toppings too, the rest were all gathered in one place. Absolutely terrible service, genuinely appalled.

Rapid delivery, however the pizza has been transporter on the side and not flat and all the garnish has slide on one side with the dough rolled over.Not really nice. The box was also soaked with oil.

Booked a table, received confirmation. Turned up to only be told our booking had been cancelled as they were too busy. 20 free tables said otherwise. We had waited 30 mins for our booking in which time we could've eaten at one of the empty tables and paid and be gone. Total joke.

Food luke warm on delivery despite being 15 minutes early. Both pizzas had all toppings slid to one side. Looked like the delivery guy had crashed into something or fell of of a cliff. Not a restaurant fault but still a part of the experience.

Literally the worst pizza that I ever tasted in my life , I ordered I ordered the prawn pizza the portions are very poor , the taste is horrible I would say the worst in England.

My girlfriend and I recently visited Pizza Express before heading to the Theatre Royal. The service was prompt and friendly, and the food was exactly what we hoped – fresh, tasty, and served without delay. We had a lovely, hassle-free meal and enjoyed the experience.

Absolutely incredible team and amazing service by them all!! My daughter had a last minute pizza making birthday party here today. They managed to accommodate a large amount of us and met every need possible! The manager was so kind and helpful every time I rang up with questions and put my mind ease! The staff were so friendly and hands on - nothing was too much trouble and they were so great with all the children! The pizzas and dessert were delicious and cooked to perfection! You provided us with an amazing stress free party and everyone had a fantastic time - thank you so much!

It seemed to be in the run down end of town and was virtually empty on a Bank Holiday weekend. I can’t fault the food, but the whole experience felt a bit weird (where was everyone?). Very strange.

To pay £15 for a pasta dish that was smaller than a kids portion is disgraceful, not sure how pasta gets burned making carbonara!! £20 for a pizza that had maybe a handful of cheese when described as double cheese and peperoni. Will NOT be ordering here again.

The in-house dinning reviews seem to match there delivery service not good. A chicken & bacon pizza without chicken tossed on more yellow and red pepper to soften the blow....3 scabby bits of bacon. Appreciate the feed back and that you'll spend time to review with your pizzaiolos what went wrong with my order an update would be nice. On a positive on receipt of the pizza I did phone your restaurant and the woman on the other end was very nice and apologetic. Have attached a photo of the said pizza that a hungry police sniffer dog wouldn't even find chicken.

If you're the kind of person who gets annoyed when everything is perfect, maybe give this place a miss. You can tell the staff are doing the best they can but there were a couple of mistakes. We booked a table for 4 people. Upon arrival there was only 3 seats and my cutlery was dirty. On the other hand all of the servers were friendly and you could tell they were working really hard. The food tasted good, everything came out in good time and we never felt like we were forgotten about. So if you can forgive a few minor mistakes this is a good place to eat.

I went there on Sunday, and the food and the drinks took over an hour to be served. There was one member of staff who had to serve all the tables, which slowed down the service. When the food arrived, it was pretty good, as the pizzas were thin and crispy. However, the only downside was the service, and a lack of atmosphere.

Had to send my meal back twice the base was soggy wet like it had just been put in microwave to defrost it was yukky, even the server couldn't believe what she was seeing.

The pizzas were thin as advertised, but they managed to make the toppings crisp while the dough was soggy and raw. Kind of a talent in itself. The tables weren't cleaned properly from the previous guests and the whole restaurant smelled like sweaty old man.

There wasn’t any ham or seasoning on my pizza, it was very bland. I will visit the restaurant but I won’t order online again unless they can deliver what I’ve ordered. This is a shame as pizza express is my favourite restaurant, I’ve been going here for years.

My friends and I spent our evening celebrating a birthday here tonight. The waitress Libby was lovely and able to help us with all our queries regarding deals however when we wanted to raise a concern with the manager she declined to come over to speak to us and instead spoke through the waitress. Furthermore, towards the end our waitress seemed considerably less animated due to the harsh conversation the manager had with her which we all felt incredibly bad for. Would not recommend if you actually wanted to speak to a manager here.

Had a great meal at this establishment with friends to celebrate a birthday. The service was excellent and the lovely waitress (Libby I believe her name was) was excellent when it came to service and attending to any queries raised regarding the meal and payment. Would definitely go again and recommend to anyone looking for a relatively budget friendly meal.

Visited on a Sunday night and we were the only people in the restaurant so the service was very good, our food was very good and we will return again when we next visit Plymouth.

Not as advertised! We thought we would pop in for a quick bite to eat before a show and was advertised that she could do it within a hour! Poor management, asked to take the food away and left with one person meal and not a pizza. Not cheap, I'm a pizza down at £12 pounds. Could've turned us down if you couldn't fit the time scale. Shame as food generally not too bad usually

Rubbish!! We ordered a pizza and nothing arrived!

We booked a table for four to have a pre-theatre meal, allowing 1.5 hours to eat. The service was inattentive and slow even though the place was not exceptionally busy. It took 35 minutes to be served our drinks. The food took another 20 minutes. Our grandson enjoyed his child's pizza. We had two starters to share - mushrooms and olives, and estimated that there were no more than two (smallish) mushrooms chopped in the dish. Three of us had different salads, which were uniformly poor. The timing of the mains was weird as two of us had almost finished our dishes before the third was produced. The staff were aware that we were unhappy but didn't care. The prices were way too high. We will never go there again - not recommended! My wife and I recently ate at Knead Pizza in St Andrews Street, which was cheaper, gave excellent service and good food: the comparison was stark.

Popped in at 7pm. Seated promptly and drinks served within 5 minutes. Food quickly followed. Excellent service by staff and good to see a manager clearing tables , serving food and helping out. A rare site in the hospitality sector these days. Kitchen staff seemed happy and this was reflected in the food. Did run out of a few things (expected on a busy Friday night) but handled professionally and things quickly changed /rectified. Overall a very positive experience.

Ordered a Romana Padana, with an extra topping. it's probably one of the stingiest pizzas I've ever had from Pizza Express. 5 olives for £1.50 and barely any goat's cheese. Disappointing

Kept changing delivery time and food arrived wrong and cold.

We booked early as we were going to see a show. Was seated promptly had our order taken asked for water for the table not asked if we wanted bottled or tap so along came a bottle. We shared starters which was prompt then it all went down hill from there. Pasta arrived in cold bowls which then made the dish to eat lukewarm,the onions were not cooked still crunchy not offered any Parmesan. People around us were waiting over half an hr even to get a drink. The table was cleared and the waitress didn't offer us a dessert menu or coffee no apology. There was a table of 5 that walked out as there were seeing the same show and had no time to eat. Very disappointed. I was not going to pay for the water which we didn't ask for and they did take some money off the bill which they only done as I complained.

Food and service brilliant as usual. Boring restaurant with no atmosphere though...cold feel to it. And I don't know why they seem only to require people eating vegetarian options (ie. Vegetarians primarily), to have to pay more as donations to charities ..couldn't see a single meat option where the price was more because it included a charitable donation. But unfair.

Staff friendly though one drink had to be chased up, very quiet though by the time we left they had seven tables occupied but I think 2 pizzas 2 soft drinks 1 large wine 1 small wine and i pudding for £61 is pretty pricy when my pizza was only luke warm when it arrived and the covering wasn't exactly thick, a common problem it feels like at eateries. Their VIP app was alittle confusing and if it states you are eligible for two rewards then you should get two rather than having to choose between the two. Clean table and surroundings but feet felt cold. For what you pay its far too expensive so won't be returning

I hate leaving bad reviews, but after our final time visiting this restaurant before deciding we wouldn’t come again I thought it’s worth leaving some feedback. This is literally the closest restaurant to us and we like the pepperoni pizza. We thought we liked the nduja dough balls, until after the first time ordering it it comes entirely different depending on who is working and how they’ve decided to cook it. Very often food is undercooked or burnt or somehow both, and missing ingredients swapped for others without letting you know, when this happens literally everutime you come to the restaurant or order takeaway you are unable to eat half of it… eventually you stop going. It’s a waste of money. The staff are generally nice people but I don’t think they have much time to do their job or training as I’ve never been asked if I want the bill or had quick service, and it’s usually really quiet.

In my recent trip to Pizza Express, I had a very enjoyable experience. The staff were all polite and attentive. The food was amazing and I didn’t have to wait long at all, would 100% recommend!

Not busy, lots of staff hanging around. 6 of us ordered food. 5 meals arrived. 5 minutes later, we had to ask where the remaining pizza was.. and it took another 3 or 4 minutes. Clearly forgotten. It was a simple margherita pizza, obviously rushed, and turned up not properly cooked. Two thirds of the pizza was literally disintegrating and sloppy, it hadnt been cooked properly. Sent it back. 5 mibs later, it turns up and is still not cooked. Sent it back. 3rd time it arrives and its better but still not great. Manager tookthe pizza off the bill but there was never one apology, just some very smart and sharp comment that 'the manager has checked this pizza (the 3rd one) and she has passed it as correctly cooked."... pizza plate dropped onto the table and walked off. 2 other pizzas over cooked, but we were hungry so just ate them. Really disappointing, for a relatively expensive meal for what it was, Will not be going back.

I’m currently at the restaurant trying to finish off the hardest burnt pollo pasta I’ve ever had. It took them half an hour to cook so the expectations were higher due to care a diligence but no it wasn’t worth waiting a minute for. I didn’t fill up the plate, it felt like I could count the pasta, 56. I felt like I nearly broke a tooth on the pasta!! The service wasnt very good as they only had 3 people working for the 60 customers, so not their fault. Very disappointing for a main which felt like it could’ve been a starter. I would avoid coming here. Please go at your own risk. The staff took it off the bill so I increased their service. It wouldn’t run without the waitresses

I went to pizza express for my birthday and ordered some pizza! The pizza was fine and I enjoyed it. My family gave me some cards and birthday presents. When I got dessert everything changed though! A kind waitress named Shay had wrote on the dessert “Happy 11th birthday” and that really brightened my day up. Give Shay a raise!!
