Pizza Express in Edinburgh, City of

Having read some previous reviews I had to double check I'd picked the correct restaurant to review! We had great food; dough balls and American hot pizzas - which were nicely hot! Our waiter was friendly and attentive.

Had tea here Saturday 2/11 one of the worst pizza meals I’ve ever had poor choice and very little topping

Went there with 4 children and 2 adults. Pizza was extremely poor and tasteless. Hardly any topping.The childrens pasta was hard. Most disappointing. Way too expensive for this poor experience.

awesome service and great knowledge menu, pizza options were good lots to offer, thy have beer and some cocktails, food was great service was better

Estábamos en un hotel cercano y comimos aquí dos veces después de largos días de turismo. La primera vez estaba en silencio y la segunda vez estaba ocupada. Nos sentamos y tomamos orden rápidamente las dos veces. Cada vez comíamos una pizza, una botella de vino y una jarra de agua. Todo se sirvió a su debido tiempo y lo disfrutamos todo. No hay quejas de nosotros!

We booked a table for 7pm and arrived early. Shown to our seats and ordered food and drinks. Drinks arrived after 10 minutes however, after waiting for an hour and a half, we left without having been served our meals. Other tables that were seated before us were also still waiting. We were sitting close to the food preparation area and watched as countless food was plated up, coming out of the ovens burnt. This was left for over 20 minutes on many occasions, before being delivered to the tables. The manager appeared unable to deal with the problems and food prep staff were handling the food ungloved and without hair nets.

Dans un bâtiment qui semble avoir eu un passé industriel, cette pizzeria ne paie pas de mine mais elle mérite l'attention.La terrasse n'était pas praticable en raison du vent qui soufflait ce soir-là.L'intérieur est chaleureux mais il peut vite faire froid en raison des hauteurs de plafond (estimation 6-7 mètres).L'établissement sert des belles salades et des pizzas succulentes: la pizza aux champignons est tout simplement exquise!

Ci siamo fermati per pranzo dopo la visita al Dynamic HeartIl menù bambini fa sorridere .. sembra più un menù 7 nani nel piatt ( ino ) principale, ma di sapore era piuttosto buono.Io ho ordinato una pizza margherita e anche quella molto piccola rispetto ai canoni italianiIl personale è comunque gentile, servizio veloce, e abbastanza pulito.

I visited with family for my 6 year old nephews birthday . We booked a table for 1.30 as we had tickets for a show at 4pm . It took 50 mins to get our food after asking what had happened to it ?There were lots of empty tables so not busy. I was then given a cold pizza and my sister had a big hair right over her pasta as did my nephew! No replacement was offered and we didn’t have time for the kids to have dessert that were paid for! When I went to pay the male staff member was extremely rude offered no apology and even tried to charge me for the hairy pasta that was sent back . He pretty much through my receipt at me ! We have enjoyed pizza express in other areas many times but we will not be back . All in all a birthday treat ruined . I have never come across such bad customer service . I should not have paid for this and I am taking this further .

Granted it's during the Edinburgh Fringe period, but it took a long time for the food to arrive as the restaurant was so busy.

We chose to dine at the Pizza Express for a quick pizza meal. The service was efficient and the pizza- Funghi di Bosco- was very tasty. We would recommend this restaurant to people who like tasty, well- cooked pizza.

I wrote a bad review of this place before but the fact is it is very handy for us, have been back since last bad review and it was ok. Also i have Bogof with meerkat meals. Tonight we arrived, eventually ordered, ten minutes later the wait person came to tell us they didn't have the wine we ordered, she recommended this one..... I asked if we could have it for the same price - no. Why not? Scottish law..!!?? Spoke to manager, same story. Utter nonsense and insulting to our intelligence. Oddly enough they were able to sell us the same wine in the PE just up the road. They only list about four reds, any Competent manager should be able to maintain stock, at worst he could have borrowed a few bottles from north bridge branch! Last chance, won't be back.

I’ve been here before and wanted somewhere reliable for pizza as I had my 2 children. I got emailed a 25% off voucher 5 minutes before we got there which was good timing. My kids love the child’s menu and the dough balls never disappoint. I had the bread with hummus and then the superb rectangular Calabrese pizza. The restaurant was full but service was good. Stopped for an Eton Mess which was ok too.

Mi hermana y yo hicimos el pedido en línea (aunque al principio tuvimos algunos problemas técnicos con el sitio web que no se carga correctamente) y recogimos la comida del restaurante para llevarla a nuestra habitación de hotel. ¡La pizza, las bolas de masa y el pastel de chocolate, todos sin gluten, eran increíbles!

Have now been waiting 2 hours and 10 minutes for our main course to arrive. Poorly trained staff who obviously have no clue about customer service. Avoid!

La variedad de comida es buena, el menú para niños es totalmente adecuado, y el personal fue excelente. Not great at all. Restaurant was not busy and it took the staff 20 minutes for a drink order, instead, they slowly cleared other tables and chatted. Had to ask a number of times for the food order, which took over an hour and a half to arrive, it seems they were concentrating on take away orders, I watched around 10 pizza orders being prepared and boxed. When food did arrive, after us asking where the food was an hour after ordering, it was fine but again, not great service as we ended up having to move our empty plates to another table so they would actually clear them. When it came to dessert, they had only one option left as they ran out of everything else. In fairness, they did give us discount, but it was not the experience we expected after many visits to various Pizza Expresses.

Party of 13 greeted with welcoming smiles and a glass of Prosecco......the nibbles provided were delicious (sun dried tomatoes, olives and dough balls with garlic butter). The space allocated for the pizza making was a bit cramped but we had a lot of fun making them ......don’t know if it was because we made them ourselves (and who doesn’t love their own food) but the pizzas were ultra tasty.

Sadly this one was similar to many I’ve visited and although the food is good it’s not fast.

We got pizza one of our nights in Edinburgh and Pizza Express Holyrood was steps away from our hotel. The pizza was fantastic!

We normally really enjoy pizza express in general and have enjoyed the Holyrood branch on a number of occasions. However, we had a very disappointing visit this time round. I work in hospitality, so I understand the beginning of January exhaustion is difficult. However, the service was dismally slow, there was a maximum of 15 covers in the whole building and we waited a very long time for orders, 2 drinks orders were not brought, we asked for the dessert menu but we waited so long to order dessert that we decided to just call it a night. The restaurant had run out of a lot of food, specifically disappointing was the fact there was no pasta at all- weird for an italian eatery. One of our party ordered the Ragu pizza, new to the menu and described on the menu as "rich Bolognese sauce with red onion, ricotta, mozzarella, tomato, rosemary, fennel seeds and garlic oil, finished with slow-roasted tomatoes, shaved Gran Milano cheese and fresh parsley ", 5 minutes later the waitress came over and told us there was no bolognese sauce and would it be ok with plain tomato instead - to which we said absolutely fine. What we received was a base sparsely covered in tomato sauce and mozzerella, with a small amount of ricotta and a few fennel seeds - not what was advertised. The rest of the food was mediocre at best. Again we understand that January is difficult in this industry, and there had clearly been delivery issues, but there is no reason for rudeness and poor quality. We won't be dining with pizza express again in the near future.

I've visited this restaurant quite a few times over the years with my son, usually at the end of our trips to Edinburgh and prior to heading home in the evening. Quality and value has been variable - a year ago, I was actually quite pleased with our visit; however on this occasion I'm sorry to say that standards have slipped again and portions/toppings are quite simply mean.

I came in on my lunch hour, ordered immediately & left, late with a refund as my food never came.

I eat her at least twice a week. great staff and very tasty food. I really recommend it for this and also for it quiet and relaxed atmosphere.

I have visited this Pizza Express with my friends and their children on Sunday evening. There were around 10 tables in the restaurant, but the service was very poor, we had to ask for our drinks after 15 mins and the server didn't even know what was the order. The kids menu pasta was horrible, but the pizzas were ok.

The food was nice (same as in any other Pizza Express), but the restaurant was terribly busy, leading the wait staff overworked, and not having enough time for their guests. This also resulted in quite a wait for the food, which is especially troublesome when you're out for dinner with children.

First time to Pizza Express and was pleasantly surprised! Had a pizza with a salad in the middle. Perfect size, thin crust, fresh ingredients. Will be back!

Casi sabes lo que obtienes en un Pizza Express. Los niños conocen el menú de memoria y están contentos con cada visita, y no había ninguna razón para que eso cambiara aquí. Nuestro servidor, Giovanna, era encantador, y ella fue muy eficiente, volviendo a llenar nuestra jarra de agua del grifo sin esperar que nos lo pidieran, por ejemplo. La comida era normal, con mi rigatoni boloñesa está bien, pero no genial, podría haber sido más caliente y podría haber sido mejor. Además, la pizza romana parece haberse encogido en tamaño. Y la falta de disponibilidad de tres de los postres en el menú fue una decepción. Pero la comida llegó rápidamente, el precio era razonable y el lugar es limpio y luminoso. Está bien si tienes niños necesitados y quisquillosos, pero probablemente es mejor evitarlos en la mayoría de las demás circunstancias.

Por un lado, el servicio es rápido y eficiente, pero la comida es regular, y quizás más importante, el precio es estratosférico, ya que es parte de una cadena se centró en pizzas, uno de los productos más baratos para preparar vueltas. Usted puede sentarse en otro lugar por menos servicio que es tan bueno el servicio, pero con al menos igual calidad de la comida. También señaló que cuando faltaban elementos de la factura, me cobraron el poco extra, pero no es reconocido por ser sincero (por favor tenga en cuenta que era un cargo por servicio - Consejo - incluido de facto en la factura).

Had earmarked another restaurant but the kitchen was closed so popped in here. Super tasty food, quick, efficient and friendly service and reasonably priced. Not a vegan but had a vegan pizza and it was really tasty.

Our server was very friendly, polite, and attentive. She gave recommendations and answered a few questions. Our appetizers were delivered quickly, and the pizza was delivered after we finished our appetizers, well timed.

Thoroughly enjoyed the GF sloppy Guiseppe. Went with a group including young people with disabilities, in wheelchairs. We were well looked after. Some confusion over use of discount codes/vouchers. Went to Pizza Express during our visit to Edinburgh. Couldn’t fault the waitress service but the food was very disappointing. Pasta was dry and burnt in places on one dish, 2nd dish the pasta was very burnt and left a nasty taste through the whole dish. The third meal was gluten free and although the meal was gf it would appear that there had been cross contamination as my friend was quite ill not long after. All together it spoilt our evening and we’ll certainly not be returning.

We popped in to try this restaurant ad we were delightfully surprised by the unique but not scary menu. The food and drinks were so good. Atmosphere was super comfy and the waiters were always there but not in the way. Well Done.

Vino llegó 40 minutos más tarde aún no había comida, el camarero apareció y dijo que lo "olvidado de poner nuestro orden'. Nos sugirió un plato para mantenerte podría estar en orden, 20 minutos más tarde nos dieron una porción de calamares. Finalmente llegamos 1 pizzas 5 horas después de haberlo hecho. Por esta vez nos habían casi terminado nuestro vino, así que pedimos 2 vasos pequeños (cuesta £9. 90). Cuando llegó la factura nos sugirió que la £9. 90 debe eliminarse, ya que no habría más vino no había pedido que esperamos 1. 5 horas para nuestra comida, tiempo durante el cual otras personas habían venido e ido. Gerente dijo que era incapaz de quitar vino ya que estábamos en Escocia? ! Con muy mala gracia que al final sacaron una pizza en vez de, pero nos dijeron que no podíamos usar el bono emitido por pizza express, en una visita anterior. Su actitud era grosero y paternalista. En vez de seguir para discutir eventualmente pagado por todo el vino y una ensalada y a la izquierda. No volveré a esta rama, el hombre a cargo de los clientes ha olvidado que sin él no tiene trabajo, así que si su personal hacen un error es su trabajo para hacer las cosas, no abusar de la atención al cliente.

We visited this restaurant with a fairly large party from work. We had booked in advance but more people wanted to come than had we had initially booked for. However the staff were brilliant in accommodating this and provided great service (and food!) all evening.

We love coming here as it has quaint tables for Two to have a bite to eat and a glass of wine to warm you up on a damp night out. The thin pizza is great for a late night snack, and unfortunately the dough balls go down way too fast and easy. They are soooo good! We will be back.

Standard Pizza Express fare - interesting building and very handy for the MacDonald Holyrood hotel. Probably the most echoing place I've eaten. Friendly staff.

As with most Pizza Express restaurants you know what you're likely to get - this was no exception. The food and service were good and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Plus with a voucher deal it was good value too.

We had just flown into Edinburgh that morning from London and had done some sightseeing and checked into our hotel. We we're all very tired and did not want to look hard for a place to eat. We found this place and we we're all concerned it would be like a Domino's or Pizza Hut. We talked in and ordered, the waitstaff was incredibly kind. When the food came we all realized it was not like your typical Pizza chain. Their Pizza was good and for a good price. This is a place to go if your tired and want some good pizza. But do not expect it to be pizza like you find inside of Italy.

We have visited several Pizza Express restaurants in various cities and this was probably the best so far. It was very clean, the food was good and the staff were friendly and attentive. We were able to book online and use Tesco Vouchers (which isn't the case in some restaurants during the Festival). Well done.

Wine @ £17.00 for £4.00 bottle.This is taking the Michael, so we will not be going back, and we used to go once a month.Cheap meal during festival came to £30 a head with tip and doughballs. We nornally get a 3 course chinese with duck, wine and beer fir same cost. Think they are excessively profitteering now.You have been warned.PS: They are trying the London thing of adding 12.5% to your bill, not the normal 10% in Edinburgh.

I went to Pizza Express with my brother for lunch, after visiting Holyrood Palace on a visit to Edinburgh. We ate garlic bread and a Margherita pizza, which I got a discount on with nectar card points.The pizza is standard pizza express food. The waiter called Robbie was very attentive and friendly and the food was served quickly.

Good chain and always tends to be consistent. One great thing now is the vegan option. Well done Pizza Express! Recommended.

Sit up the top on the internal balcony. We have 3 families with a total of 9 kids and the witness was frankly a dream: could not have been more accommodating. The food is standard pizza express fast food, hard to screw it up. But what made a massive difference was the awesome waitress Pilar, best ever for families!!!!

This restaurant has so much potential, it's in a good setting, but always seems to miss the mark. The most recent occasion was particularly disappointing due to poor service after the Edinburgh Marathon Festival.We were seated outside and had to ask multiple different servers to clear the table, then to give us a menu, then to take our order. It began to rain after we ordered and there was no canopy, so we requested to move inside. We were told they were full, despite a number of visible free tables. After 10 mins of confusion, we were offered a table inside, by which time one of our party had decided to leave with her (cold) pizza in a box. The other two remained to endure more inattentive service (e.g. having to specifically request pizza cutters/cutlery, drinks, bill) and two underwhelming pizzas. There were then multiple problems with the card machine and further delays so we had to pay with cash.I think they were understaffed but they should have known the festival was on, so there's little excuse. We were running for the door by the end. It a shame, this restaurant really lowers the standard of the brand.

Called whilst on our first visit to Edinburgh. We are fans of Pizza Express anyway & this dining experience was up there with our favourite local Derby one. Service was great from start to finish and the food was also really good. Would definitely call again next time if we get another chance to visit this wonderful city

Our friends family and our family went out for dinner. The tables are well laid out so you are not encroaching on anyone else dinner. The staff and menus are really family friendly and a hit all round. I would definitely eat here again.

Received great customer service from the waiter(Possibly Peter as it was on the bill). The sea food pasta dish was utterly sold out so must have gone down well, was very glad for quick service that also didn't cost the earth as we were rushing to a meeting.

After a long and tiring day my partner and I decided to go to Pizza Express for dinner as I have never been before. We were seated promptly by a member of staff and given menus. We chose a pizza , side salad, dough balls and the polenta chips all to share. Plus 2 beers. We waited an hour on our food. The waitress did apology, but surely there should have been more staff on considering it is Easter holiday time. Pizza was ok. My side salad was very small and not much to write home about, Doughballs were fine as were the Polenta chips. Not the best first impression for me. Hopefully I may win the trip to Italy that they a promoting. That would make me feel a whole lot better :)

We stayed in the Holyrood ApartHotel which was just almost literally outside this Pizza Express. The usual decent enough food for Pizza Express. Attentive staff and good service. However my daughter found a long black hair in her dessert which was kind of disgusting. They replaced the dessert but should have removed it from the bill as a gesture of good will. They did not nor did they offer to. food,

As an Aunt and Uncle in charge of to little girls aged 3 and 4 we had been out for the day, and went into the restaurant for lunch. From the word go Dylan our waiter was brilliant,we were given a choice of tables made to feel very welcome,colouring equipment was brought and we all settled down to a lovely lunch. Our order was not straight forward but he made it easy ,when we were getting ready to leave he took time to speak and joke with the children he made the visit for us .

I visited for dinner whilst staying next door at the MacDonald Holyrood Hotel. I was seated promptly, and the friendly staff took my order without delay. The food arrived quickly - it tasted great, and was at a good temperature. My pizza followed soon after the starter, and they were happy to make one of their older pizzas no longer shown on the menu. Dessert was also good - the salted caramel ice cream is very tasty!

Lovely modern restaurant. Friendly staff. Great food. Well worth a visit in this area of Edinburgh. Check out online deals and vouchers too...makes it great value.

This is a generic chain with bland overpriced food and slow service. Unfortunately there are not a lot of options for decent food at this end of town. When we were in the other day they added a compulsory "service charge" then asked for a tip on top of this. That is going beyond cheeky and into outright chancer territory.

We visited today for lunch. After waiting for 10 mins at the entrance and being ignored by multiple waitresses, we decided to leave and eat elsewhere. Extremely disappointing especially given there were a number of empty tables laid and ready for two people. We are regulars at Pizza Express but won't be visiting the Holyrood Road branch again.

Right next to the Macdonald Holyrood so it was very convenient for a fast reliable eat. I like the new antipasti and the fiorentina remains my favourite pizza! Good atmosphere

We often go here, as it's nearby - and we've never been disappointed, Food is good and excellent value for money - but it's the friendly service that makes it so good. Pilar in particular is excellent and always makes us feel so welcome,

My wife and I met up with other family members here for lunch recently. Staff were very friendly, and very helpful with our 3 year old granddaughter, Eva. We chose the meal deal of 2 courses for £9.95, and all the food we got was beautiful, inc the children's menu. Coloured pencils etc were provided as well. Eva couldn't finish her pizza and was given it to take home with her. Thank you. Service was excellent. Later on that evening while going through receipts in our pocket we came across our bill, and discovered we had been overcharged some £20. It wasn't suitable to return to the restaurant at that time , but we called in the following day and spoke to the staff about it. Without hesitation they refunded the difference and were most apologetic about it. Thank you. Would most certainly return on our next visit in that area.

We enjoyed eating here a couple of times. It was right near our hotel and also the fact that it was a relaxed atmosphere were what attracted our attention. The fact that I'm gluten intolerant I have to say it was the best gluten-free pizza experience I've ever had. The ingredients were fresh and the service was excellent.

Visited with my wife and two teenage daughters. Bit out of the centre but close to the parliament and palace. All had pizza,usual Pizza express quality and good flavour. Staff were Friendly and able to use one of the 15% offers. Overall nice pace and food.

We pre-booked lunch here to have our final meal in Edinburgh at the end of a sports camp. The food was lovely and the staff very helpful although a couple of the 20 orders got a little mixed up.

The food was the usual Pizza Express menu and good value for money. We went on a Saturday night and it was surprisingly empty. Had been busier early in the evening with children etc. staff were really attentive and helpful.

We visited on Tuesday as a group of 33 and the service and food was amazing.Alex the manager was superb in organising everything, not such a simple task in a group this size. She even managed to control the rowdy older woman in our party who enjoys the wine a little too much..........33 starters and mains served quickly and all fresh and hot. Job well done :) Thanks

Never experienced a Pizza Express this bad. Firstly, my boyfriend's pizza came with next to no toppings on it which he was annoyed about. Secondly, both our pizzas were quite thick and doughy, not what I've usually had when I've visited other restaurants of this chain. Thirdly, the toilets were disgusting. In all of the women's cubicles, someone had been sick which had not been cleaned up. And finally, the service was questionable. Our waitress seemed to have no idea what was going on and brought us the bill over twice. We left feeling very disappointed.

Qué vas a esperar? Ya con el nombre en la puerta lo sabes... Un sitio de pizza al que entras y da igual el país en el que entres... No obstante, la pizza estaba bien aunque escasa de "materia"; lo mejor, la masa.El servicio es el típico de cualquier restaurante, nada memorable... La recomendación: la pizza que tiene espinacas... sabrosa. Era tarde y tenían demasiado interés en que los comensales fuéramos terminado... Quizás la opción del Pizza Hut que hay al otro lado de la calle es la más segura para elegir algo normalito.Ojo, la cerveza grande es de 660ml ;)

Visited last week whilst attending the Fringe with partner & two teenagers. Had booked ahead which is very important at this time of the year. Plus I'd doubled-up some tesco vouchers which meant we only paid a third of the bill!Service was great and not in your face or rushed. Venue was compact and we were warned that sitting on the mezzanine level we would be next to a large group of 14 people which could get noisy. They weren't. In fact they were a Fringe act celebrating a birthday and sang that we'll known tune beautifully! Extra delight at this venue!Food was good - sometimes the franchises are vastly different quality but this one is good and consistent.

I think pizza express is one of those places that does really good pizza pretty much all of the time. They are very consistent. In prefer the holyrood one as it is less busy and a bit more spacious than others so helpful if you have a pram in there. Staff always extremely friendly and the kids booklet and crayons is a winner. Dough balls are fantastic, kids love them too. The kids menu generally is really good and includes fresh veg with the meal. I usually have the pollo ad Astra.
