Classic fish and chips, crispy batter, amazing chips, cooked whilst we waited so felt super fresh. The staff were also really smiley!

Not pleasant. Chips seemed to have been reheated in old oil. Fish was the worst we have had for a long time. Onion rings were burnt and had no onion in. Majority was binned.

Absolutely awful food, the chips were disgusting, greasy and smelt like they had been cooked in very old oil. The chicken was extremely dry and the sausages in batter were very fatty and so greasy that the batter hardly stuck to the sausages. Without a shadow of a doubt the worst chip shop food we have ever had!@@@

Staying at Sandy Balls we phoned in a large take away order and it was ready with paper written on so we knew who's was who.

Quick, tasty, reasonable and freshly fried. Curry sauce and battered sausage were banging. Shame they don't sell saveloys. Cash only but no problem with that. Lady at the counter was very helpful.

I can't fault the food we received from here. The only complaint we had was the reduced menu. No saveloys or fried chicken. And mince and onion pie. Amazing curry sauce though. One of the best I have tasted

I'd probably share similar sentiments with the reviews below. The large mature lady couldn't give a damn for any custom with her miserable carefree attitude. Tension between staff. Requested a fork and napkin like this was some major inconvenience? Also in this day and age why would you serve the chips wrapped in paper in a polystyrene container and plastic fork? Food was average.

Totally disgusting fish was like rubber chips were dark think they may have all been a few days old the oil clearly has not been changed in a while. Its a shame they used to be so good will not be going back

Was Really Hungry so really wanted a nice feed unfortunately this didn't hit the spot the chips were edible but the Fish was so running in Oil I could have given the car a Oil Change a real shame because there is not much choice in the area nice Staff hopefully just a Blip

They have no options for Coeliacs (Gluten Free) which meant we couldn't order here. Need to invest in a separate fryer for the chips at least.

Visited today at lunch time whilst rest of the family went to a local cafe. Staff were lovely and offered me a lunch special of fish and chips. Fish was delicious and chips also lovely. Will be back again when I'm around next 😁

Absolutely delicious. Family of 4 well fed and thoroughly enjoyed. Vegetarian daughter had lots of choice. Portion sizes very good. Lovely couple who run it. Would definitely recommend. Scrumptious

Popped in for a takeaway for two around half five Saturday evening. Cod, chips, mushy peas, and curry sauce. Lovely piece of fish, nice light batter and well cooked. Chips were good too. Peas and curry sauce rounded everything off nicely. Efficient and friendly service, reasonably priced, and ready in an instant. Perfect !!

Absolutely revolting. The oil clearly hasn’t been changed for sometime. Both the lady and the man behind the fryer were miserable as sin. The whole place looks run down. If you want fish and chips go to the pubs in the area as this establishment is awful!!

Really wanted to like this fish and chip shop not exactly loads of choice in the area... But oh dear it was terrible chips were black from bad potatoes and tasted like they had been sat around all day. Worst I've had in a long time, there large cod was about the same size as an OAP in my local, the batter was sad/mushy & the chips greasy & full of potato eyes. Only 2 versions of pie, steak & ale or chicken & mushroom. Won't be going back there again. Should have taken more notice of older reviews.

We preorder, food is hot , well priced and always hits the spot. Its fish and chips as it should be, not some gastric pub. I have however taken off a star as your door handle is worn out!

Found the service to be very rude and unfriendly which wasn’t a great start! Fish and chips were greasy and never been to a fish and chip shop which doesn’t sell a saveloy! Not somewhere that I will be returning to.

The body language said it all. As businesses are trying to get back on track you would think they would welcome every punter, but, no, they were closing in 15 minutes and couldn't be bothered to fry anything for a substantial order. Arms crossed and no smile, they didn't want any more custom.

Building is apparently 400 years old, very low ceilings in front of shop.Eat in is at the back. Freshly cooked plaice, chips and mushy peas. Really well cooked. Clean and staff were friendly. Will visit again when next in Hythe.

We were all ready for the fish and chips but ended up throwing a lot away. Very friendly couple and quick service but cooking oil had a taste and was not hot enough for frying. My family were on holiday in the New Forest last week and we decided to have a takeaway. The rest of the family went to the Chip Shop round the corner, but I chose to go to Philpotts since the other one didn't have a veggie-burger. The price was reasonable and the food was very nice. The veggie burger was particularly tasty, and the chips were fine. I would definitely visit again the next time I am in the New Forest.

Ideal when driving through Fordingbridge mid days. Main car park close. shop opens 11:45 just right for sitting in car to eat with a drink before continuing the journey. WELL DONE.

We went here whilst visiting the New Forest. The fish and chips were ok quite expensive for the size of the portions. The reception we got from the lady who served was very unwelcoming, didn’t even get a bag to carry my four items in. Disappointing, this is not giving visitors to your beautiful forest a very positive experience.

Whilst this is not the most terrible fish and chips we have had it did come close Supposedly fresh cooked chips were of course refried as can be seen by the outer fabric of the chips as well as its somewhat mushy nature also they had been left warming far too long after frying

This has been the worst fish and chips we have ever had. It went in the bin complete waste of money,fish was soggy and the chips we're burnt and over cooked disgusting.

Local chippy so pop in when don’t want to cook and need something fast. With young kids this often means soon after opening and food is always very hit or miss. Sometimes nice and fresh but often chips are just soggy with not crispness left and fish has disintegrated in wrapping on way home as a result. When popped in later in the evening the food is often better but it is still a lottery. Just a shame there isn’t many other alternatives to this in the area for fish and chips...

As an American coming to England, this is what I think of as a real fish and chips shop. First the outside is so inviting....with the name of the shop is a pretty green and white. Walk in and you have a ceiling about 6 feet so if you are tall watch your head. But once you are in you REALLY feel like you have gone back in time. Now you have a choice.....in front of youare some yummy items that you can buy and take away. Or you can order off the huge menu in front of you on the wall. Several types of fish are available.....some breaded, some battered. You can put in your order and wait to take it out OR.....head for the back of the shop where there are lovely little tables with much more head room. Outside you will see the beautiful Solent....great view. Most likely the owner will be here to take your order. He is he son of the original owner and a really nice person. Don’t be shy........if you aren’t familiar with a traditional fish and chips shop, ask any questions.....they are happy to help. And don’t be afraid of the mushy peas......they are just peas...mushed. I don’t get why.....must be a British thing. Anyway do try Philpot’s Fish and chips. The fish is perfectly cooked and just delicious.

Visited Fordingbridge for the Christmas Light Switch on and treated ourselves to Fish and Chips from the take away. Absolutely fabulous fish and chips, best we have tasted for many year. Highly recommended. Freshly cooked, great variety, great service. Cannot wait to return for another treat soon.

This is the first time I have had to give less than 3 stars in any of my reviews. The lady serving me was pleasant and the fish was good but the chips looked and tasted as though they had been cooked and reheated at least three times. They were dreadful and if it wasn’t for the fish I would only have given 1 star.

We were on holiday in the area and got food from here twice. Didn't have the fish but the burgers and nuggets were excellent, and nice chips (big portions). Really friendly staff, and good food, spot on.

Las patatas fritas eran pasada y muy grasienta. Sin embargo muy generosas porciones. El pescado era pobre y parecía como si hubiera estado sentado por un rato. El pollo estaba recién preparado y el mejor de los cuatro comidas. Los precios son normales para pescado y chip de tiendas. Yo no me alojaría aquí de nuevo.

Time and time we return infrequently and always find fish is encased within a slimy coating of batter. Chips don't seem to have much flavour and also fish isn't that fresh. Won't return in a hurry. Any port in a storm.

It's the nearest one for about 8 miles but does what it says on the tin, including breadcrumbs as a choice as well as batter for the fish. The service is full of character and the food is very tasty.

Whilst on holiday I visited Philpott's for a Friday evening takeaway, and after reading some of the reviews it was with some tripidation. However I was so pleased that I decided to see for myself, because the fish was cooked beautifully, the batter crispy and the chips were pleantiful, again well cooked and definately good value for the money. The opening times are from 5 pm to 9pm and there is also a lunchtime service which I think was 11.45 to 1.30pm, both everyday except Sunday. I dont think that the website that comes up has anything to do with this Phillpots. I would recommend you give it a try if you are in Fordingbridge. I will certainly be going back next time I am there. This is a take away only, so dont go if you are expecting to sit down and dine. It is good old fashioned British Fish and Chips.
