Peps Plaice in Wolverhampton

In all the years I´ve been coming down to Compton to get my Fish and Chips, Pep´s Plaice has never, ever disappointed, whether it´s on quality (I´ve not had better fish, more `just right,`not too thick, not too thin batter), price (I´m sure you can find a cheaper chippy, but not for the same quality), portions (seiously, 2 large chips will easily do 4 hungry folk, or 6 normal mortals) or service (on a Friday evening, with a fast moving queue out to the canal bridge, the heat of the fryers and the noise of the crowd, the staff are all still incredibly attentive). I can only recommend Pep´s and hope they carry on as they are! back home over Easter, so looking forward to popping in soon!

Dropped a few stars... Kebab meat and salad used to be lovely, but now be prepared to chop up some salad when you get home. plenty of meat but very little salad. ☹️

Freshly cooked, well priced food. There is always a queue at busy times but it's with the wait. It's nice that a lot of the packaging is recyclable too.

Had a pie and chips , the pie was hard on the crust, couldn’t eat it and the bottom was soggy and salty and the chips were undercooked

Wrote a review in April as standard seemed to have dropped but quality is back to being fab … great fish and chips and fantastic service as always

What on earth was this Peps. Regular customers. Disgusting. Soggy batter. Peppered chips! Please train your new staff as quite a turnover of staff on a very regular basis. What a waste of money. Really disappointed in you. Have photo if you and customers need to see this. Refund request made.please

The fish is real cod & not the stuff out the sewers that many other shops are serving as “cod”.

Went on a Friday late night. A few drunk customers around. Chips were really rubbery and the fish was awful. Give this a miss for sure. Especially late in evening.

Love this chippy. Staff are friendly and very efficient and the food is always good quality. Obviously prices have gone sky high everywhere recently so it's more of a treat now than a weekly visit.

We started buying fish and chips from here last year and since then the portion of the large fish is getting smaller by the day, but the price is increasing on the other hand. Which is extremely disappointing. I would go back to new bridge.

This chippy is beyond the pale with their prices. Over £16.00 for small fish and chips, and roe and chips. Have been coming here for years but will never visit again. Disgusting rip off, especially when you can buy a large tin of roe for £6.00 which contains at least 6 servings. No excuses Pep, you've been rumbled. Give this shop a wide berth.

A chippy I have been going to for years because it’s the best of the best!!!! Family run, top quality service & food. Any bad reviews on here must’ve caught them on a seriously bad day because I have been coming here for years and have never had a problem. This shop is never not busy and that says it all! When Pep retires - put it this way, there will be some very upset people including me!!

We went for our tea the chicken was so dried up it was just so dry. The chips were disgusting tasted like they had been sat around for days never again everything went in the bin. This place is just getting worse absolutely disgusting for the price you pay

Used to be the best fish and chip shop around, without doubt. Having been coming here for years . Recently have began to feel shortchanged. Large fish is no longer large, there’s really not much difference to the small. Batter doesn’t seem the same, chips have lots of little fried bits and prices have gone up a lot. I am ndetstand orices need to go up, but the quality has definitely gone down… a lot. As a regular that’s hard to say!

Had a mini fish, cone of chips, pot of curry sauce and a peice of chicken breast. Had to try them out as my cousin's are chippy regulars here and always say good things about Peps.. I'm from Lower Penn/Springhill so my local is Penn chippy or chip stop who aren't bad either, but Peps is next level, Lovely well mannered staff too 🔥 Good job I was on my last drop in Compton on deliveries for the day. Excellent quality chips, incredible SF Chicken, friendly staff and quick service. The queue only gets long because of how good it is compared to other chippys in the area.

The food was really good, I ordered a doner meat in naan. Was really busy, but they have a lot of staff, which meant I wasn't waiting long. Usually a bit out of the way for me but was local to it Friday night, so I gave it a go as it was previously recommended. Definitely worth the travel 😃

Great chips, possibly the tastiest in wolves. Both owner and staff very friendly and a good menu choice from a traditional chippy.

No complaints, Fish and Chips were 10/10. Usually big queues on weekends and some evenings, however this goes down fairly fast and is definitely worth the wait. Thanks guys!

This has to be by far the best chip shop in Wolverhampton . Yes there was a queue for about 15 minutes but that just shows how good the food is as people are willing to wait , even in the rain. If you want excellent food and great service then peps plaice is where you need to go .....ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT in every way .

Just so you know Peps Plaice chip shop that rules from a great height. First things first... The Chips. I'm new to the delight of Wolverhampton chippies but even though battered chips aren't a Birmingham staple I've experienced them enough to know when they are exceptional. These are just that. Just enough to add an Extra level of taste but not make you feel like you're eating your way to an early grave. That said I would suggest sharing a large bag between at least two people or going for a cone of chips to accompany your choice of fish. So how about the fish? Well when fresh the batter is light but strong enough to hold the ever so light cod within. When not as fresh out of the fryer the batter soaks up the vinegar and softens while the cod holds its flakes. Peps Plaice really put the effort in and when they are busy they have plenty of great staff to serve you as quickly and as friendly as possible. Even the curry sauce and gravy stand out from the crowd. The quality is way higher than most inland chippies so in my opinion they are not to be missed.

Great food, that isn't drenched in fat! There is generally always a queue which I believe to be a good thing. Despite a queue, it always moves quickly. The girls that work in there are super polite and always very helpful.

Our first time here, so we went for the mixed kebab meat with chips in a tray special. Amazingly delicious and very good portions too. We will certainly be going again soon. 😋 Very good value for money.

Moved into the area in the summer. Used this chippy a few times now and it is just great. Quick service, food readily available (not kept waiting for fish or chips to cook like many other places). Always plenty of staff working to ensure queue moves quickly

The food is well portioned and so crispy. On a weekend expect 15 to 20 min ques at peak times but this goes to show how perfect Peps Plaice has managed to get it's fish and chips. It is the best place to go.

There are not many as good as Peps. This is 5* fish n chips. Plenty of choice. Expect to queue on popular days & times. Well worth the wait.

Standards have dropped A lot! Just ordered kebab and chips and it was like someone just scooped all the ends of the kebab meat, absolutely dreadful. Went all they way back to complain, the owner couldn’t be bothered and walked off leaving the staff to “help” #noshitsgiven very disappointed 🤢😤

My daughter collected takeaway mixed meat and chips for me. The meat had no taste at all very bland! Too many staff in there not socially distancing and 1 particular young girl had a very bad attitude with her. I live in Stoke-on-trent and at the moment are staying with my support bubble. I will not be eating from there again!!

Went to Peps Plaice today and had a fantastic lunch. My wife fancied the Haddock and chips. So after a long walk along the canal we went to Peps to order. Had to wait outside a few minutes which was worth it. Young guy served us with what we believe was the best fish and chips we'd ever tasted and that includes one we rated as number 1 for a few years in Torquay. Fish was lovely so were the coated chips. Perfection in a box. Highly recommend this place and will be going back soon. Edward and Veronica Morgan . Wolverhampton.

Found a hair in my donner meat won't be going there again

Stopped in for dinner one evening while passing through on a narrowboat. I'm from a seaside town and picky when it comes to fish and chips, but was reassured by the length of queue outside. Really good quality haddock, crisp batter, really nicely cooked to order, generous portions, and good value.

I had mix meat and chips... the chicken wqs like jelly. The same day my other half had the same but the chicken was burnt.... two totally different meals. I won't be returning

Yesterday (08/08) was our first visit to Pep's Plaice and it certainly won't be our last! I telephoned the shop beforehand to ask some questions regarding the fish and chips as I have dietary restrictions. The man I spoke to was very friendly, understanding and helpful. He was very through and even listed all of the ingredients in certain items for me! They are known for their battered chips here (and rightly so!) but plain chips can be cooked on request but only during quiet periods (which is perfectly understandable.) Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions I wasn't able to enter the shop myself when we placed our order and had to wait outside, but the service was very fast and efficient. Only one person from each family group is allowed in the shop at any one time to maintain social distancing. The shop looks very smart, clean and professional and the staff were all wearing face masks. I feel that this business genuinely cares about the safety and well-being of their customers, including with regard to adhering closely to the current Government guidelines. The two-metre distancing rule is being applied as there were two-metre queuing lines clearly marked out on the floor. I like how they put the individual portions into polystyrene cartons, then wrap them in layers of paper, rather than wrapping the chips directly in the paper as I've seen done everywhere else. They also put your completed order into brown paper bags, meaning that everything is recyclable, the food stays piping hot and the grease is kept to a minimum, not that it was that greasy to begin with! As for the food itself? Well, that was absolutely delicious! What people are saying is true! These were the best fish and chips I've ever eaten in Wolverhampton and now I don't want to go anywhere else! Their reputation is well-deserved! These were the first battered chips I've ever tried as well! They weren't a bright orange colour either! They were perfect! They had just the right amount of orange tint to them. The portions were the ideal size. Thank you so much to everyone at Pep's Plaice! Your shop is fantastic! Keep up the good work! I'm already looking forward to coming back for more, hopefully in more 'normal' times!

Peps serves quality fish and chips every time, without doubt Wolverhampton’s best chippy. All staff have face masks on and there’s a staff member controlling the queue outside from the door. Social distance floor tape in the shop also. You order, pay, then wait outside for the staff to bring your food out. Food is always piping hot. Fish has a lovely crispy batter and chips lovely also.
