My mother lived in wickwar for 97 years, so when she passed away it was fitting that we had the wake at the fox and maple, being it was on lunch time we had a selection of sandwiches and hot food ( chips, quiche, chicken strips, sausage rolls etc ) coffee and tea, we even had takeaway boxes provided to take food home with us, I would just like to say you done my mum proud, one big thank you to all. We had a very nicely cooked pub lunch with a relaxed, unpretentious country pub atmosphere. The landlord who has only been here 5 months made us feel very welcome. The menu included pub staples such as pie and mash, burger and chips. I had battered cod and chips. The fish had crispy batter, proper thick chips and minted mashed peas. My wife had Sausage and chips which she also enjoyed. There are specials on in the evening. As I was driving, I had a low alcohol Ghost Ship ale which was pleasant, 2 other low alcohol beers were available. There was 1 cask ale, as well as a well stocked bar. There is wheelchair access and a disabled toilet.

We’ve driven past many times but have never eaten in the Buthay but we thought we would try it out and we were not disappointed. The food was lovely, I had the chicken burger and my partner had the curry with extra spice. He said it was great which is a massive complement from someone who is a curry lover and picky. Every dish was well cooked and tasted lovely. The puddings were amazing, I had the bubble chocolate and had to take half home as it was a big serving. There was a problem with one of the puddings and as soon as we let the waitress know it was sorted. Even the manager came over over to apologise. The customer service was second to none and the staff were helpful and friendly. A lovely meal, great atmosphere and friendly staff, we are looking forward to coming back soon.

We had a table for 6 and all had great meals on a Wednesday lunchtime. We had steak, fish n chips and curry and all the meals were served together all hot and beautifully presented. 6 empty plates and we all enjoyed our meals. We felt safe as tables were socially distanced and hand sanitising on entry.Great atmosphere and good choice of music playing and not too loud.Great service and waitress was wearing a mask at all times. It’s a lovely pub and also has a little community shop inside. They also have a prescription delivery point for locals. Lovely garden although it was raining when we were there. Would be great for families with children.

Very poor service on their first night open for months due to COVID. After waiting an hour for 3 very basic meals, and asking twice the staff member said that the order was not put through and would only 5 mins. She did apologise but with only 4 tables to wait on (2 was already eating) I felt it was half hearted.

Well what an evening we had - it was absolutely fantastic!!! Ryan and the staff were phenomenal in helping us out and even banging in nails for us to put up decorations which took nearly 3 hours. The meal was fresh, hot and absolutely amazing - Roast Beef with all the trimmings or Hunters Chicken with desserts (all arranged beforehand) – nothing was left on plates. So many compliments over the beef which was beautiful and soft and cooked to perfection and no delay in serving as it was done a table at a time. Everyone had what they had ordered a few weeks previous so it was all very well organized. Ryan wanted to make sure the children were catered for as a group in the separate annex and it worked beautifully especially as one child was a coeliac and another was noise sensitive. He also made sure they were served first before the adults which was so thoughtful especially as it was our fault the meal was late! We had a disco but everyone was so stuffed with food that they couldn't dance. I can't say anymore except a huge THANK YOU for making the evening such a memorable one and I can thoroughly recommend the Buthay for excellent food, great hospitality and a kind, thoughtful and generous host.

Went for Sunday roast with in-laws and not great! Have been a few times and I would of said it was mediocre. Waiting time was quite long considering the restaurant wasn’t busy. When we got the meals they weren’t very warm which isn’t the first time and then to be informed there wasn’t any Yorkshire puddings as they were flat!! Roast potatoes were more like jackets cut in half but rest of the meal was ok. Ordered desert only to wait half hour for the waitress to come over and say they had run out of the desert we ordered and was a few already crossed out on the board. I could understand this if it was later on in the day but this was 1pm and we had booked so overall quite disappointing.

We received a friendly welcome on arrival. We ate at this restaurant on a Wednesday which is their 'pie night', and two pies are offered for £20 (i.e. £10 per person), but if there are three of you eating you pay full price for the third pie (£12.95) which seems unreasonable! The service and quality of the food were both pretty good with a good serving of vegetables, but the restaurant was very quiet. The overall value was average.

We came in to order pizzas to takeaway, we ordered one Calabrese, one Margarita, and one Diavola. The calabrese and diavola contained meat in the description, so we ordered the margarita for the vegetarian member of our group. Waiting time wasn't massively unreasonable, however having driven a fair distance home (only reason we came is because it was recommended), we opened the pizza boxes to realise the margarita had pineapple and ham on it,so not a margarita at all, no good for our vegetarian, the calabrese had no meat on it at all despite the description saying "sausage", it was just lumps of cheese with massively over sized pieces of broccoli, and the diavola was the only correct order, however it had chunks of chilli on it which were about a pound coin in thickness, way to overpowering for all. Having driven a long way, deciding it was too far to drive to return them, we had to pull the meat off of the pizzas in order for one of us to even be able to eat. Having a rating as they do, I'd expect the orders to be correct when they are served, especially seeing as we were the only ones in to order at the time. Overall, pizza's were the wrong order, and what we did eat wasn't massively impressive in comparison to the price. Wont be returning, don't recommend. We had high expectations as were very much let down by this experience.

We passed what used to be a former spit and sawdust pub many times since it's conversion without going in. However , we eventually decided to give it a go and were more than pleasantly surprised. The inside had been tastefully transformed and had a lovely wood fire burning on what was a cold night. However, the new landlords had retained the old skittle alley. The bar was well stocked and boasted a number of local real ales. The food was some of the best we have had outside New York's Little Italy . In days of pre frozen pizza dough and synthetic cheese topping, the pizza was genuinely locally made using good quality ingredients. For the more sophisticated Italian food lovers their pasta dishes are of high quality reflecting the care taken with the product. We would recommend the establishment.

We went to the Resturant a couple of weeks ago. The food has suddenly shrunk which is really disappointing as the portions used to be great. The food has gone down hill as well, it's really not as great as it used to be. The head waitress is rude and constantly looks like she's going to kill someone. This was recommended and I thiought I would give it a go with the kids on a quiet Saturday afternoon. Overall first impressions good, great menu and a warm welcome so we sat with a beer and chose our order. Having been pointed at the Specials I chose "Pollo" described as chicken breast in 3 peppercorn sauces with chips/salad, my 11 year old a pizza and my 9 year old meatballs. After a significant wait, whilst we listened to the phone continually ringing at the bar and custoemrs stood at the bar chasing thir take away pizza orders, the food arrived. My "Pollo" was a piece of chicken the size of a bacon rasher swimming in a sauce with about 10 chips and a greasy mixed veg, the pizza was fine and then a massive adult meatballs/spaghetti meal arrived for the youngest. I pointed out a child's meal had been ordered and the waitress checked with till lady who said quite loudly "its his fault, he told me it was for a child after I had already written it" She was on a rol and by now the phone was rining every few minutes to the extent that she said out loud "I'm not answering that any more" and just left itNot good - not going again and £41 for the pleasure!

We have been meaning to go to the buthay for a pizza and a pint for a long time as it's very local to us and we had heard good and not so good reviews. We didn't have time to stop so called in for a take away on the way past on a Friday night. Nice open fire and friendly bar staff a good pint and nice wine.Unfortunately that was all.....we were told our order would be 20 mins. After 55 mins and three visits to the bar while gently supping my one pint of good beer as I was driving, a member of staff went to look in the kitchen and returned with two pizzas. We drove the three miles home , poured a drink and opened the boxes. Oh dear.... The pizzas were rather cool after ten mins of receiving them and appeared not to be a special and a pepperoni but both were littered with what looked like luncheon meat or cubes of spam, very salty and just not good for around £25 with a wine and a very long pint. We phoned the buthay and spoke to a member of staff and told him our concern about the incorrect pizzas and the amount of time we waited for them. He seemed very disinterested but asked if we could bring them back . we had had another drink by then and could not for obvious reasons.....We were told there was nothing more he could do and no apology was offered.I believe customer satisfaction is the way forward in business and I'm very sorry but this was not achieved on this visit. We love using local business but won't be recommending the buthay in the near future.

Went having heard good reports. We simply had pizzas salad and wine. If you like authentic Italian pizzas this is not for you - the pizzas are doughy and sauce/toppings unremarkable however they are not expensive and will fill you up. The salad was a sad affair - a few clumps of tomato, lettuce etc thrown together without care (or dressing). If you want to fuel up this is ok but its not quality pizza.

We recently visited The Buthay with another couple, and left feeling extremely disappointed and let down. The food was ok, but the portions were huge. We ate in the 'a la carte' restaurant rather than the bar, hoping for a nicer menu. There were only 5 mains and 5 starters to choose from - not enough choice by far. We were given the standard menu from the bar (pizza and pasta), and 3 out of the 4 of us decided we would have to choose ours off that. When we ordered these pizzas, the waitress (presumably a manager of some sort) looked at us with disgust and simply asked if any of us were having starters. At this point, we explained there was very minimal choice henceforth we wouldn't be requiring any starters. She then went on to rudely tell us there were starters on the bar menu, which actually turned out to be labelled 'sides and extras' and consisted of garlic bread and the like. Having worked in customer service for a number of years myself, I was shocked by the terrible service we received from the waitress, who made us feel uncomfortable and awkward. No doubt the pizzas would be fine for a takeaway (the garlic bread was lovely), but don't go here if you are looking for an enjoyable meal with good choice or service.

I have reviewed the Buthay Pub before, when it was under previous management and it was shockingly bad. But finally, it is under new management and I think Wickwar has got someone doing a great job! Have heard good things locally, so decided to give it a try again (with my fingers crossed!)I was quite surprised, as I thought Pizza was a strange thing to serve in the local pub! But it appears to work....the pizza is really good (and I don't like it much normally!) Well cooked, nicely presented and CLEAN CUTLERY (where everyone else appears to fail - why can't anyone else wash up these days??) The glasses were clean too. My husband had pasta, lovely. My fussy daughter - designed her own meal! Perfectly catered for by the kitchen staff. My son ate 2 deserts! Loved both.Whoever is now running the Buthay (Peppe, I guess??) Keep up the good work! You are following in a long line of total disasters since about 2006 - It will take time to reverse the damaged reputation you have unfortunately inherited. My tips......make sure the place stays really CLEAN (can't be too clean!), including the cutlery, plates and make sure glasses don't have old lippy on rims. The loos could do with a bit of an upgrade when money allows. Watch the ambiance.... the lighting can be a bit naff, watch the longlife bulbs - USE CANDLES, inexpensive way to a better atmosphere! Decoration needs a bit of a revisit, doesn't quite feel comfortable yet but can't put my finger on it. We didn't quite feel like we would wanted to stay all evening, buy drinks and chat....not sure why. Food, SPOT ON! Price, I think, is very good. Beware of attracting too many of the younger market with band nights etc etc. Wickwar is full of middle aged families with children and empty nesters . Because of the high house prices, we are all fairly well off financially - this is the market you want! As much as I love the 'youth' of the village and surrounding areas....they will only spend £8 on a pizza for 10 to share! You want the deep pockets of the majority in the village who are desperate for a good evening meal and happy to part with £100 a time! GOOD LUCK, I have everything crossed 4 you...we will be coming again this week.

The pub has recently opened under new management and has a pizzeria menu aswell as a restaurant menu. The pizzas can also be ordered to take away. I have not tried the restaurant menu yet, however have returned several times for the pizza! They are massive, taste delicious and are very cheap, costing between £6 - £9. The children's portions are the same size as the adults, so get one to share between two. The atmosphere is good, it can't quite decide whether it wants to be a pub, a good value pizzeria or a high end restaurant, but I'm sure it will find its niche. Excellent service and a lovely garden with children's play area. Would recommend!

A rare meal out with no kids! Had the full three courses from the quick turn around specials, they're changing almost daily! Good starter, garlic mushrooms (enough to share!), the best T-bone I've ever had (possibly best steak too) and lovely authentic Tiramisu. Washed down with two very reasonably priced bottles of Chardonnay. The comment about price in title is more about costs of starters and some other dishes..the owners (which are doing a great job of a new (and much awaited) venture) just need to ensure prices don't rise too quickly. But thoroughly enjoyable!

What a terrible pub. Such a shame as Wickwar needs a good pub. We are local and ate here on a Bank Hol Monday night. The place was empty. Staff treated us like an inconvenience! Food was very poor indeed, some under cooked, luke warm slop. Garlic bread dry, gravy like water and all tasteless. My advice, avoid at all costs. My advice to owners....shape up or ship OUT and let someone give us a hood pub (and make a bomb £ in the process)!!!

We noticed that the Buthay had recently been refurbished (at least the outside) so we decided to give it a go for lunch with friends. The inside hadn't changed that much, the tables and menus were sticky, the food choice was minimal. We ordered 3 portions of cod and chips and 1 portion of lasagne, the fish was greasy and tiny. The lasagne was a tower of stodge and none of it was worth the £8 per meal paid. The staff were inattentive and too busy chatting at the bar to each other and not concerned about the customers and their needs, we were not even offered deserts or coffee.

Haven't been here for a while but when I did, it was always amazing. Their £1 pizza's were the staple of my summer when I was a young teen. Shame they don't do them anymore.

Came to Pizza Hut to celebrate my son's 3rd birthday. Staff extremely rude, pre order was wrong, everything seemed like an inconvenience, made a fuss of taking drink orders to the point where they just kept walking off every time we tried to get their attention to order a drink. They just dumped our pizzas on the table for us to sort out, rather than asking who has what and putting it in the correct place, they wanted us to do their job for them! And to top it off, I handed a birthday cake and candles in at the beginning of the meal for them to bring out for my son at the end, they bought it out with the candles unlit and just put it on the table as if it was a meal, no singing, no effort what's so ever. I asked if they had a lighter to light the candles, waitress looked at me as if she has never seen a birthday cake in her life. She said no they did not have a lighter so I asked them to put it back in the kitchen so we could find a lighter and actually sing happy birthday as my son had already seen it and started getting upset. Asked another waiter if there was a lighter, in which he said yes and got one straight away from behind the till! My husband then lit the candles and bought it out himself as we could not rely on the staff to do it properly. Overall, an absolutely awful experience and will not be returning.
