Pepper Mill Stoke in Stoke-on-Trent

The food quality was poor, as was the attitude of the staff. We ordered some sides to share whilst having a drink, fries were burnt and tasted as if they had been cooked in old oil, we asked the waitress for some fresh ones. The waitress took the food back to kitchen and returned to advise us that the chef said that's how they are supposed to taste, and that they would not provide us with any fresh fries. Im not sure where burnt fries are standard, but the food and attitude of chef means that we would not recommend anyone visiting this restaurant. I have visited many Marston pubs and have never had a negative experience. We were made to feel very bad by the attitude of the chef.

Food was really poor quality. Brussels sprouts were brown and dodgy. Skin not taken off the carrots, hard peas… Not much selection at all. Staff all looked sad (except the young lad on the bar with piercings and tattoos) very polite. For £50 odd quid it was disgusting.

I was not impressed with my visit. It was the first time we have ever been and there was a lot of the menu that was not available. The food was quite poor. I ordered the mac and cheese and there was no flavour whatsoever, to the point where I might as well have just eaten pasta with no sauce. The garlic bread had barely any garlic either. My partner ordered a jacket potato and beans. There was a tiny sprinkling of cheese and less than a table spoon of beans on the potato. I was not impressed with the quality of the food, especially when the prices were quite extortionate. Even the orange juice I ordered was watered down and weak and tasted like the cheap orange juice available at tescos for 60p. The resteraunt was empty (it was me and my partner and two other people in the resteraunt). Tables hadn't been cleaned and servers were on their phones and eating food, nobody came to check on the food with me and my partner and it is safe to say we will never be back

Went in to have some food and a drink. Met the staff Cheryl, Joel, Molly who were all very welcoming. Enjoyed my meal very much and would definitely come again. Quizzes every thursday too which is ACE!

The beer prices are extortionate 4.85 for a carling over 6.00 moretti- outrrageous

Waited 50 minutes for food to arrive and it wasn’t at all busy. Staff didn’t look like they wanted to be there and didn’t look presentable. Food and drink were okay. However, there were lots of dirty tables around us.

Stopped off for a meal with family ordered mixed grill the steak was so bad it was difficult to even cut full of gristle worst steak I’ve ever had rest of the meal was ok but nothing special the deco and furniture in this pub is in poor condition service was good wouldn’t recommend the food beer was ok

I recently had the pleasure of dining at The Pepper Mill and it was a lovely experience from start to finish. The carvery, hands down the best in the area, featured beautifully cooked beef that was tender and flavorful. The potato gratin on the menu was simply divine, perfectly creamy and seasoned. The staff were incredibly helpful and attentive, going above and beyond to assist me and my disabled wife. Their genuine happiness and eagerness to help made our visit all the more enjoyable. We are already looking forward to our next visit. Well done to The Pepper Mill team for delivering such a fantastic dining experience! Returned again this Sunday, just delightful

Arrived to find it was pie night. Less than q0 customers in the whole pub. Order 2 pies for me and fellow guest. 40 minutes later before food arrived. Terrible service with no reason why the food took so long when it's the special for that day. Won't be visiting here again. No atmosphere in place. New management been in since May 2024 and it's not showing

Met up with family, who travelled from Wales, Sheffield and Lincolnshire, to celebrate my daughter's birthday. Due to a lot of traffic on the A50 a few family members arrived late, due to this we took longer to order and was over our allocated timeslot. At no point were we asked to hurry up, we were left in peace, to allow us to celebrate. I had emailed the pub a few days prior to my booking to ask if I could bring a cake and some table decorations, which was agreed. When we arrived a banner had been put up near our table. One of the employees (didn't get their name) took the cake and after we had eaten, kindly brought the cake out to my daughter and even sang happy birtbday to her. I would definitely return to this venue as the staff went above and beyond to ensure we all had a lovely time! Thank You.

Us border terriers are made to feel at home here. Mum feels at home here. Dad likes a good pint and feels very at home here... Lovely staff. Top carvery, best one yet so far, very friendly staff

The atmosphere is brilliant, the service is fantastic and extremely fast. It was busy, and I had my food in 15 minutes. Not only that, the food was delicious, and the waitress who served me was so bubbly and wonderful. All the bar staff were so helpful with everything, cutlery, sauces, etc.The waitress also offered me some desserts, and I just couldn’t resist. I had to have the rocky road sundae, and my partner had a chocolate fudge cake. They were presented lovely, and they were delicious. I had a fabulous experience, and I can’t wait to go again!!!!

Came for carvery on Sunday, great selection of veg and the beef was fantastic. Friendly, welcoming staff very busy great atmosphere. The pork with crackling was fantastic

We went for my nans birthday. Food took over an hour and a half to come out and delivery of the food took over 40 minutes from first dish to final dish to be bought out. There was mold on the garlic bread, which we returned to the kitchen. However, the lady serving us was a trainee who was extremely polite and apologetic and did her best to resolve our issues.

Ordered two meals for me and my partner one meal came out, we waited for the 2nd meal, nothing, so my partner went to the bar and asked where our 2nd meal was, we waited for someone come over and tell us one meal was only ordered we explained two meals were ordered so they showed us it was only one meal payed for and the lady who took the order got confused! and we were happy to pay again for the 2nd meal again after waiting to pay for the 2nd meal the chef came out we explained we ordered two meals but the lady didn't take both orders and we were happy to pay for the 2nd meal, again waiting for someone to take our payment know one took it! We waited over an hour for our food not to show or no one to even take our order correctly! Definitely won't be coming here again, we asked for a refund and left, we definitely won't be returning

U trained staff, food took over 45 minutes to arrive, yet no one in the place, god only knows how has trained the chef, or if he works off a spec sheet!! Who's provided them definitely wants a word with themselves

So disappointed, fish overdone, waiter didn't know what Tartar sauce was. My partner's steak not done as requested and didn't bring the peppercorn sauce we paid extra for. It's a shame, but won't be going again.

Honestly it was my first time here and it was brill. The staff brilliant, the food 10/10, and the atmosphere was incredible. The staff were so talkative and polite. This one barmaid Lucy stood out to me, very chatty and bubbly, and just overall amazing. I can't wait go again

The food was really really nice was quite surprised how nice it was, the waitress keeley was lovely, very helpful, polite and always busy, wasn't just standing round, very well presented, the place overall was nice, clean and have events on for kids which is nice and a small kids corner which is always good to have, definitely recommend and will 100% go back

Great pub, massively improved in recent months. Staff always friendly and make a fuss of my little girl. Bar price are a little high but other than that a very good pub.

had a lovely experience eating here. staff were super friendly and helpful, couldn’t do enough to make sure we enjoyed our stay. food was piping hot and delicious and even though i was full, the waitress suggested a dessert and we couldn’t resist! fudge cake was rich and delicious and perfectly finished off the meal. well worth the price, will be coming again!

Have to say this is a great place for a meal and tipple. The food is great and the service is very warm and friendly. Also reasonably priced inparticular the btg special.would definitely reccomend if your passing or give them a call and they are more than happy to accommodate you as best they can.

Honestly can't fault thus place, food, service and pricing all on point. I reccomend the steak. Unfortunately I eaten it before I taken a photo! Typical. Will definitely visit again.

What an amazing place I came down here from veritygate on a Carl out. It was a great place for food. To top it off I saw Bernie by the toilets. What a great day! The custards great as well.

Vegan Chill serving barely 3 mouthfuls... Staff nice though.. Note.... The reply seems to be a standard reply to any criticism (See earlier reviews) "we appreciate your honest review. We set a high standard for ourselves, so we are disappointed to hear that your experience with us was not a positive one." Is it easier to copy and paste than actually improve? Is this a "high standard" of customer service when you can't be bothered to address the issues? And if you look at the picture of the portion size... It IS LESS THAN 3 SPOON FULLS.... 2 Stars must try harder.

Lovely place, staff very helpful and mixed grill was to die for

Waiting over an hour for food. Was asked to wait by the waitress when requesting knives and forks. But then saw the same waitress wipe the same table about 20 time within an hour rather than do any other jobs. Staff tend to stand around talking and the manger is no where to be seen. Overall bland atmosphere and felt judged by staff members.

Recommend the hunter's chicken, very tasty and good value. Shirley and Caitlyn our servers were very accommodating and friendly. I would definitely return Thanks Shirley.l and Caitlyn ☆☆☆☆☆

Not a place I would recommend! The carvery was shocking the salt and chilli chicken kebab I had was served with under cooked chicken.

Have used the Peppermill many many times, my granddaughter and I always go there for lunch. Today was a disaster, we waited well over an hour for our order to be delivered to our table. (chicken burger and chips) 3 times we asked were our meals were and each time we were told :- they were plating it up, and only had one chef. 20mins later we were told it would be with us in 2 mins, 20 mins later it arrived. Was disappointed at the portion size considering the price, The meal itself looked very basic,however it was tasty. They were taking orders but not informing you of the wait. Will be looking for somewhere else to go.

Great pub, filled with lovely staff! Everyone was so joyful, and helpful. The food was lovely, I had a mixed grill, medium rare, and it was lovely. I can’t wait go again!!!

Poor service. Waited an hour and a half for food even though it wasn't busy. The waitress brought the wrong dishes to the table, then had an attitude when we said it wasnt what we ordered. Other tables weren't cleared down when people left. We used to visit frequently we won't be back for a long time. They need to hire more staff, bring back the carvery and inform people when seating them that there is a long wait for food.

took 15 mins to be served at the bar (they were arguing about change for the till) took 1 hrs 15 mins for the food to arrive no apologies just "there was an influx of customers and this isn't their level of busy on a Wednesday with only 1 chef on" There was only roughly 6 tables with people sat at .... there definitely wasn't an influx of customers... if they feel this is busy then my god I'd hate to see them coping when there is people in we weren't the only people to complain meals were brought out 1 at a time with 4 coming then another 10 minute wait for the last 2 meals food was okay at best the server had no customer service skills whatsoever Toilets were also filthy we haven't been here in a while and thought we'd try again but definitely won't be coming back

Food was cold, 5 tiny pop corn chicken pieces for the meal, garlic bread was not cooked at all so I asked for it to be cooked it more and it still came back doughy! Not a good environment at all. Waited 45 mins for awful food when it was not busy at all. Definitely not worth the money or time wasted. Not even a goodbye was given to really make sure we had an unpleasant experience.

Went for Sunday lunch today for the first time. Staff were friendly and the drinks very reasonable price. The carvery was excellent standard, we went for the beef and turkey option both excellent quality, vegetables fresh and cooked to perfection. Will definitely be returning soon to sample the rest of their menu.

The best carvery in the area. The meat is high quality and a good variety of veg dishes etc. staff are friendly and there is a nice atmosphere to the place. I will now become a frequent customer.

Amazing service from one of the staff Cheryl. She approached my brother about his pint of beer, unhappy it wasn’t as it should be and looked a little flat. She took it and changed it, without him so much as questioning it. Top class service.

An extensive menu. We chose from the lunchtime smaller portions menu which was great. Good selection of drinks including cocktails, mocktails and hot chocolate. We couldn't find a drinks menu on the tables only a wine menu , that was extensive too. Free parking.

Upon arrival the pub was empty so I assumed we wouldn’t have to wait long for our food….. how wrong was I. As I went up to the bar to order our food there was already a lady complaining about the time she’s been waiting for her food, anyway I ordered our food and went back to the table; after 40 minutes of waiting I asked a waitress to ask how long the food would be, she came back and said we would have our food in 5 minutes, another 20 minutes go by so I get up and go to bar to ask how long food would be, at this point I see the food being taken to our table, so I went over to the table to eat, but what was presented to me was far from edible. The onion rings and mushrooms were burnt and dry, I asked for the steak to be cooked medium and it came rare, the chips were also greasy, I asked a waitress to get me a manager, and the “ chef “ came out to ask me what was wrong with the food, I told her and she was not happy I didn’t like the food and insisted it was fine and continued to start a argument about it, I asked again to speak to a manager and she walked off so I went to get a manager and explained my issue to him, he said that his staff had accused me of swearing at them therefore he would have to think about giving me a refund! Least to say I got my refund in the end! Customer Service is shocking and the food is even more shocking, this place needs shutting down!!! If I could give 0 stars I would!

Visited today, ordered surf and turf, I left the steak, it was very dry and tough, complained to the waitress and she just said " sorry about that"! We won't be visiting again. I wish I had taken a photo. Disgusting

Not recommend. 1hour to wait for food we got it it was cold no napkins chips were gross must of been fried over and over again would not go again.very over priced including the drinks.

Do not work for this company!!from what I've heard the new manager is a right tart covers herself in makeup and sits all day in the office eating carvery meat. Tbf this place has always been a joke because I got sacked back in 2019 for having a funeral and not calling in sick 🤣🤣🤣

Avoid at all costs food took at least 50 minutes too come out and the restaurant was empty staff were unkempt and no interaction with any guests just standing around on their phones what a shame the staff here were such a credit too the pub give it 6 months and the windows will be boarded up

My kids dinners were served before the adults and they were finished before we got ours! whilst waiting 40 minutes for our food I decided to check out your ratings.. upon checking I see you have children eat for a pound with paying adult meals? Well why did I pay full price if that's the case? After checking with the staff apparently I needed to quote this when ordering. I've checked and I can't see anywhere that it says this on your advertisement. So very disappointed with regards to getting a discount. So no, I won't be bringing my family here again. Food wasn't great either, chicken was dry and I would have expressed this if somebody bothered to ask.

Went with a friend was relatively quiet. Service was quick and food was lovely. Dessert was just as nice. Price was good too.

Terrible service long wait for food had hunters chicken had a dry chicken breast with a small amount of barbecue sauce on it limp salad leaves onion rings soggy and under cooked, staff did not seem concerned about any thing

No carvery on anymore fair enough. Had to wait an hour for food, then chase it up then they had left one of our meals off the order so couldnt even do that properly everyone was waiting ages due to the chef qalking out wasnt even explained until we went to ask for our money back due to no food being given us. After an hour and 10 minutes my son chicken dippers came out, corn on cob was hard so he couldnt even eat it. Then another 15 minutes my other sons came out i askdd when my food was coming he said in a minute so 10 minutes went by i went to the bar they said they hadnt charged me for it or even put it thru. To say it is a shambles i new it had got bad but we thought we would give it another go but never ever again will me or my family be going. Feel sorry for the poor waitress who seemed to be doing everything on her own

Don't believe the responses of the owner, Lasagna frozen, heated in a microwave or merrychef (microwave oven) Pie, curry, chicken fully cooked, burgers, soup, burger buns, fish unless it's steak it's probz frozen chez Nacho cheese, peppersauce, gravy, mash the list goes on. You must really like microwaves to have 6 and a microwave oven in a kitchen and not use them. I challenge you show us one being prepared Even better show us where u store them

Bar wasn't particularly busy. After our first round, I went up to the bar again to get a second round, the guy behind the bar looked at me and walked into the back, a girl cleaning tables to the left of me had to walk past me to get back behind the bar and went straight in the back. She then came out if the back, looked at me, lent on the bar and started talking to people in the back. A chef came out and stood talking to her and whoever was in the back, also looked at me then carried on talking to them. After waiting 5 minutes to be served, I gave up. We usually have 3 or 4 rounds, however decided to try a new pub and ended up leaving after 1 round.

Friendly staff ,relaxed atmosphere, very nice meal

I asked for a steak medium and it came out tough as nails then when I said you made me another one (not taking away my plate) about 20 minutes later a new steak came and was rare, it was too bloody for me and the rest of my food was cold as you just replaced the steak.

Had a meal on Friday 26th with my partner and it was the worst meal I had ever experienced. I had hunters chicken for £12.59 and that's the quality of food I got, the chicken was tuff and tasteless and all i got was a plate of chip nothing was cooked with Pride just thrown on a plate and served Let's just say I did not finish my food

I ordered two drinks and a starter as I turned up to my booking early. The member of staff was extremely rude due to me arriving early and said blankly “you’ll have to sit outside for now” in a blunt way and with an attitude towards me. I didn’t think anything of this at first because as I arrived the police were inside the pub and maybe he was dealing with other issues which made the atmosphere a little unsettling anyway due to me having my 9 month old baby accompanying me. My starter came out within 20 minutes which I did think was quite a wait due to the pub not being overly busy and all I order was a little bowl of popcorn chicken. From being sent outside I also want to add that to my attention there was a dead rat that was lay next to the bush on the pavement when approaching the doors. This was a massive off put to even sit down and eat at this pub as I instantly thought this place could have rats and all sorts in the kitchen! This is not a good look to future customers wanting to have a nice meal out, due to the prices of ur food. We then sat inside at our table which we had booked and ordered our food. I ordered the lasagne which cost me £13!! It looked nice when it first came out so I tucked straight in and took 2 bites. My 3rd bite into my lasagne I was appalled and spat my food out. It was stone cold. My lasagne was raw and still frozen. The top of the whole lasagne was freezing cold! And the middle centre was freezing cold and still frozen. The chefs in the kitchen clearly are NOT following food hygiene procedures when it comes to food as they had not probed my meal before sending it out. This is absolutely disgusting and I was so shocked this had happened. I sent my lasagne back and the waitresses were very apologetic and appalled themselves as I even asked them just to touch the top of the lasagne and their faces were horrified that this had been served to me. I asked if there was anything they could offer me due to this and they offered me a free dessert. I point blank refused it and said I am not eating anything else from here so they offered me a refund for the lasagne. I then didn’t eat a thing and even my partner was of his meal. I did not get a full refund on what I had paid which I was shocked about. I had two mouthfuls of cold, uncooked frozen lasagne and nothing else was said. Later on I went to the toilet and came back and my drink that was half full had been taken, I clearly wasn’t finished drinking my drink. My partner went over to the bar and asked for a new drink as mine had been taken and the bar staff said “well we haven’t moved any drinks”! Overall my experience at this pub was not to be forgotten to say the least and I will be taking this further due to the health and safety issues at risk as the waitress even came out and told me that there was problems with the microwave and still my food was served without being probed clearly. Admitting to me that this was microwaved food and paying the prices I did in total I am really really disappointed. My experience of this pub is in a one word APPALLING!
