Great food at a reasonable price

Best Chinese food I’ve ever had honestly.

I went today to get some takeout food for my daughter. They refused to serve me a portion of salt and pepper king prawns that was 13.8 £ because their minimum card payment is £15 … I left very disappointed considering it was probably my 10th visit to their restaurant. I would never come back, you guys need to learn how to treat your customers!!!

I went to get my daughter a portion of the salt and pepper king prawns for take away. They refused to take card payment, I was told that minimum payment by card is £15 but my order was “only £13.80.. “ I found this behaviour unacceptable and I wonder how they came up with this limit!!!!

We decided to check out this Chinese restaurant while taking a break. The food was decent! Just a heads-up, they only take cash.

My favourite place in Birmingham. The food is always fresh here and not greasy. Very authentic and good service when I eat in and order via Uber Eats.

Went with a small group of friends for a quick lunch break, and left extremely pleased with our overall experience. The choices on the menu are great and affordable. Our dishes tasted delicious and were served fast, however the portions were a bit too large for our liking and we felt guilty having to leave behind some food. Nevertheless, we would come again!

There's an insane variety of dishes and the price is really appealing too. Ate there twice and I want to keep trying more dishes.

Lovely little place, great food and reasonably priced. Great menu, lots to choose from. The only thing is no matter whether they are busy or not there is inconsistent service, depending on who serves you, whether they are polite or abrupt and well mannered or not. Service can be really slow and take ages to be served or food comes out before drinks. Nevertheless, we enjoy the food we keep coming back. Cash only.

Never again we will visit this place, I ordered a beef noodles soup, and what I got was a bowl of diluted soup with noodles plus 3 of the most tiniest pieces of beef in my bowl(like the size of my thumb), upon asking the staffs, they claimed that is the normal specs. Was planing to eat the noodles , forget about the meat but it has no taste whatsoever hence I’ve decided to return the dish. Other dishes were just so so as well, there are far better options around this area, I would suggest to avoid this place at all cost.

Great food. I’m a regular. Customer service is good coming from a few members of staff, others not so much. I never thought I’d say it but I still go as it’s affordable and the food is worth it. Customer service could use an upgrade. I found out it’s also open early and closes somewhat late compared to competition. Weekends you can only pay cash or if you’re spending less than £15 it’s always cash regardless of the day of the week. If you want Coke please specify can as the pint of Coke is not the original one. Iced lemon tea is good. Braised beef noodle soup, Chinese pork hamburger and salt and pepper chips are my go to. Enjoy

Good if you’re hungry after 10PM when the others Asian restaurants around are closed

Pepper Chef is a delightful little gem in the city centre! This cheerful Chinese restaurant offers great value for money, and the sizzle plates are their specialty. The braised beef is absolutely wonderful—so hot and flavourful that it’s hard to resist! It comes with soup and curry sauce too. I’m also a huge fan of the Chinese hamburger; it’s definitely one of my favourite dishes. The staff here are incredibly nice and make the dining experience even more enjoyable. Just a tip: it's best to pay in cash for a smoother transaction. Highly recommend checking this place out!

Wasn't expecting much as it looks more like a cafe than a restaurant but omg it was lovely. Had Jasmine tea with my meal (as suggested by another reviewer) and the soup was really good and fresh (served in a flowerpot thing was odd but kept it really hot), the squid was interesting, would do that again and the chow mein was lovely. Some REALLY interesting other things on the menu I've not seen before but they will have to wait till next time! 😀

Lucky to get 1 Star the curry was like water and the chicken was disgusting. The prices are extortionate for the value. And the staff are very rude and make you feel very uncomfortable, watching you eat your food and waiting to you to leave.

Not recommended! If it were 2020, I would give a 5-star rating, but now as a Chinese restaurant in Birmingham, I do not recommend it. The quality of service has visibly declined, the waitstaff's attitude is extremely poor, and additionally, the barbecue that used to be delicious now sometimes even gets burnt. I've ordered the pepper beef rice no less than 40 times before via takeout, but the current quality and taste are far from what they used to be. Not recommended! If it were 2020, I would give a 5-star review, but now as a Chinese restaurant in Birmingham, I do not recommend it. The service quality has declined visibly, and the attitude of the waiters is extremely bad. In addition, the barbecue before was very delicious, and sometimes even It will burn. I have ordered pepper beef rice for takeout no less than 40 times before, and the quality and taste now are far inferior to those before.

There's nothing wrong with the black pepper sauce...but the beef ribs are so dry and woody that it's tougher than my life🥲

My partner ordered a lamb noodle soup, it had three small pieces of lamb in the soup, she asked the server if this is all meat you get with the soup her reply was yes. 🤷‍♂️

The food was nice but service was not upto mark . Me and my friend was asking for suggestions and they had none to say . If you want a good time i wouldn’t suggest here.

After many visits to Birmingham and China Town we chose this restaurant after seeing some tantalising plates of food through the window. We were not disappointed as the food was excellent. Service was very good and they took card payments. Order far too much food which they were only to happy to place in takeaway containers at no extra cost. Would definitely recommend a visit and see will definitely return.

Your classic Chinese restaurant

We were unsure how the food was going to be here but needn’t have worried as it was very good and tasty. The portions were of a good size and some came cooking at the table. The only drawback was that they only accept cash, which nowadays is unusual and an issue as one doesn’t often carry cash. Recommended - Enjoy.

If you want cheap and cheerful authentic Chinese food with no frills then go here. Near the Hippodrome. I would recommend ordering Jasmine tea with your meal. We had the King prawn fried rice which was delicious.

Step on thunder! Step on thunder! Step on thunder! I ordered takeout food and was surprised for the first time. Their water spinach was huge and unpalatable! It tastes so bad that it makes me sick, and it tastes so bad that I never comment on it, but I still want to give it a bad review! The chef definitely didn't taste his own creation. The dishes looked unwashed, had black spots on them, and had a strong earthy smell. In addition, the prices were not cheap at all. The other dish can only be said to be edible, but not delicious. No next time, very disappointing water spinach.

Cold/luke warm pork & egg porridge, fairly bland & tasteless. Wontons weren't bad. Dough stick fairly large, quite greasy but OK. Minimal customer service, one staff member rushing around doing everything. Cash only.

The service was literally very poor. I’m not expecting kinda amazing customer service but at least should have done some basically average service. The waitress was indifferent which makes me feel unwelcome. The food was ok.

Six of us dined prior to visiting the Birmingham Hippodrome. Premises was fairly basic with no table cloths or fancy cutlery but perfectly acceptable and more importantly it was clean and tidy. Food was excellent and the service was first class.

Worst Chinese food ever had in the UK. Cold service and slow food. When said we would like to cancel the much delayed food, it magically popped up. None of the dishes we had were edible, not to say delicious. Had it not being a really good dining experience at Haidilao Hotpot, our Birmingham trip would've been a total failure.

Haven't been there in a while, but excited they now take cards (used to be cash only). The food remains consistent in quality, and the portions are still satisfactory. Considering the price for a Chinese restaurant, it's acceptable.

The restaurant is so cold, pointless eating nice food in a atmosphere where you need to wear a winter coat inside.

Came to Chinatown for the Asian food, tried pepper chef and I'm speaking literally when I say its the worst food I've ever eaten. Squid like rubber, the prawns skin which is supposed to be removed is left on and also covered in batter before deep frying. I don't see the point of that if you're meant to remove the skin anyway. I never write reviews unless it's the best or worst place I've ever visited and this is the worst. Disgusting.

Our regular chinese treat... We visit birmingham once in a while but thought we would treat our 6 year old girl to an authenitic chinese experence, the food here is amazing we have been here a many times, the service is quick and the waiters to the point but polite. the menu is easy to navigate with pictures to help, the price is resenable too. i would recommend anyone to give this place a try.

Food was alright but the hygiene is concerning, the ingredients were not fresh, my stomach was super bloated and painful after having dinner at this place, had rather explosive bowl movements through out the night, I think its the squid🐙

Good and yummy food and service was ok. It wasn’t friendly but that’s just Asian service for you 😂 It was very hot inside the restaurant though because of the weather so wasn’t really that comfortable. Cash only payment which makes it inconvenient but there is a cash machine down the road.

Really great Chinese food before heading out for the evening. The salt and pepper 🌶️ pork and king prawns were top rate. The siu mai were OK, but the other stuff was better. Would definitely come back 🍜

It is a very good place to eat at. Most of the food is a bit too spicy for most people so I wouldn’t recommend anything over 1 pepper spice rating, however I enjoy most foods at Pepper Chef and don’t mind the spiciness as long as I have a drink to wash it down. Overall it is still a very good place to eat at and is nevertheless still one of my favorite places to eat out at.

Racist manager Very poor experience we asked for coke as a drink and where given some off brand disgusting cola 2 of the dishes where completely inedible one may me and my date almost vomit it was that bad when confront the manager about this the manager blamed us for not having Cantonese food before and then made multiple racist remarks

Good food kind people all the things that you need Saturday. Next time I’m in Birmingham, I will come back.

I ordered king prawn chow mein for £10.50 May 2023. The portion was average not so large. The chow mein was super dry with no sauce, no veg only bean sprouts and onion. The king prawns were small and very dry and very few, (I can cook better at home), and was more like a side plate. But for over £10 Should have been a meal with some sauce and vegetables at least some sauce. The noodles were very slim, Singapore style. I wanted regular medium noodles. Won't order Chow mein there again. Dissapointing.🥲

Love coming back to Pepper Chef. We had spicy lotus root, prawn toasts, cumin lamb and beef skewers this time. Chef kiss. Service is always efficient and you never have to wait long for the food to arrive.

The food tastes quite weird. The eggs on the wrap are not even chewable, making them very odd to eat. The marinated chicken drumsticks tasted very unfresh and had a strange taste. A very frustrating experience. Will not try again. :(

Over rated Chinese food restaurant, we are here for lunch and despite the name like a famous brand we knew from our country. So we decided to give it a try. But ! The food is missing the Chinese cuisine soul as well, some are bland and some just salty from msg. We try Chinese hamburger with pulled pork, the meat too dry and bland the bun is just to hard. The dim sum with pork also too chunky and the vegetables with garlic sauce… we can’t even taste the garlic..just salty and over savory from msg. The beef pepper with rice with bbq sauce is the worst sauce ever. The waiter are friendly at least

Authentic Chinese food. Great menu and great prices. The menu selection is massive and of the 7 dishes I've tried, all were delicious. Highly recommend the soy milk which is freshly made!

Great Chinese food and menu offering is Birmingham CBD. The restaurant and atmosphere was good. Food quality is great and service is quick but quite pricy though. Service will be a 2.5 star... staff don't give much attention to patrons.

Probably the best Chinese restaurant / take away we've ever had and great customer service. We went in at 10pm, they whipped up 4 mains very sharpish and a big pot of jasmine tea. Would recommend.

Standard run of the mill place. Open late so that’s a plus. The noodles were OK. The wonton soup was good and the dim sum were the best.

The staff were very rude, and in polite. Had I been on my own, I would have walked out. We were promted at 21:30, that we would have too leave at 23:00. The food was way to salty, and was not worth the price. Much better options available. They take cash only.

The food was very tasty. It was pretty crowded. Remember that they add a 10% service charge by default to your bill, which isn't normal in the UK. It's cash only. There are better options close by.

Went here twice recently. The first time I had an entire squid and for main course pigs intestines and stomach with rice. Lovely. I wanted to try the pigs intestines again and had the spicier chilli pork intestines this time. Tasted great and there was even a mini fire under the metal dish to keep the food warm! Good service and excellent value for money, as well as brilliant food, lots of which I wouldn't find in a regular chinese restaurant. Huge range of dishes - look at the menu!

Every dish we ordered was very salty specially the pepper chicken appetiser. They had too many whole peppers in the dish that made it inedible and the chicken was also very chewy.

真的特别傻逼的一个餐馆，前两天去还能刷卡，今天去就说不能刷卡支付，圣诞节其他餐馆几乎都没开门，于是他们就说不能刷卡，只能现金，老外都能刷卡，好家伙，中国人欺负中国人，然后说没现金也行，扫微信，知道汇率按多少来算嘛？8.8！！现在汇率也就8.4，其他餐馆都是8.5算，这家店牛，按8.8来，以后再也不回来了，一个吃人血馒头的餐馆！真心不建议大家去！真的是个太傻逼的餐馆了！

We Loved it here. I always usually go to mingmoons but wanted something more authentic & it didn't disappoint. We also had their chicken chow mein and I can't recommend it enough Honestly was the best chow mein I've ever tasted. Lovely helpful staff, gave us cutlery instead of chopsticks and polite. Will defo return

Food is absolutely salty and rice is not cooked properly and they take forever to bring out the food plus we waited 15 minutes for a simple dish after they brought out the meat. Tried to talk the manager about it and he was so rude and not apologetic. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. THIS PLACE NEEDS TO BE CLOSED.

The food here is always delicious, it is my favourite Chinese restaurant! The menu has so many different options and the cuisine is very authentic and features something for every taste. My favourite dish is the spicy stir fried pork intestine, however there are plenty of other options for those who fancy tamer culinary choices such as sweet and sour chicken or ribs with rice or chips and everything in between. Always an excellent place to visit, one thing to note is that it is cash only.

Love eating here when we're in Birmingham. Nice to find an authentic menu. Tasty food, relaxed atmosphere, big portions which are great for ordering a few dishes to share.

In the China Town area of Birmingham this unassuming restaurant serves excellent Chinese food at a reasonable price. Lots of seating and the decor is basic but the service is good and many customers are Chinese. Highly recommended.

Everything we ordered wasn't nice, we've tried much better elsewhere. Pancakes made from rubber... There weren't many people at time but service was slow, my husband almost have finished his food but I was still waiting for mine. Wouldn't recommend.

Not quite worth the hype on Chinese social media!! Having read rave reviews in another platform I was rather disappointed. We ordered lamb soup noodles, sour veg noodles, soy milk, fried dough sticks, tea eggs, jian bing pancakes. The dough sticks were especially disappointing, very dense and bread rather that light, crispy, and fluffy inside. Although portions were big you could probably get better tasting and quality food elsewhere for the same price. Cash only. Service was slow, food came out slow on a weekday afternoon.

It tastes good and the price is cheap. However, my friend and I had diarrhea for several hours after eating.

With a cup of milk tea, go in and be told that milk tea says you can not drink it, drink it will have to pay £2.....W?F?....never seen a restaurant like that. What kind of overrule? Amazing food, best fry noodles in midlands

Service staff are rude. They seated Chinese people before us. When I asked for water, waiter made a face because he had to fetch the water for us. Plates were starter size, never seen them this tiny in any restaurant.about the size if a tea cup plate!

The food itself for takeaway was great, but there was a wait time of about forty minutes when ordering takeaway in person. The food was also a bit more pricey than I was expecting, but was still fresh and flavourful nonetheless.

Went there for breakfast although being quite affordable the taste wasn’t authentic enough.

Very friendly staff and the food was decent for the price. Particularly accommodating for our 2 children which was great. My only issue turned into a non-issue because the spring rolls didn't arrive until the end - but since we were full, they were kind enough to provide a takeaway container :-) Late night snack sorted! Can't fault it. Would happily return.

Authentic, vast variety of choices, things you can't find anywhere else, some of my favourite dishes here. The pork burgers are to die for. And something you don't find easily: durian desert - I'm addicted to. And still reasonable prices. Thank you guys. I'm a regular here.

2017 visit Noodles taste like soap, rice watery. Coke flat. Squid and vegetables poor. However came 2022 and food was ok. Salt and chilli chicken was ok, curry was nice. Yung chow fried rice was poor but the drinks were not flat. The service was very friendly.
