Definitely not a fine dining experience. Poor service throughout and while food was fine it was definitely more pub grub.

The service was terrible. The staff very nice, nothing about this but the rest… It is the combination of everything you should not do in services. We ordered 1 coke and 1 Diet Coke, we ended with 2 normal cokes. We ordered some water… never saw it We order some toothpick, never saw it except in the end when we asked again for it and it was given with their « dirty » hand BUT the plates are given with gloves ?? You have a set of several cutlery but when they clean the appetizer, they do not clean the cutlery. We asked for dessert, we needed to ask an other time to have it. The decoration is pretty, old but it has a lot of charm The taste of the food is not very good, I’m not Italian but i can say it wasn’t good gnocchi, I never saw that kind of gnocchi… even the mozzarella was sticky. The quality price ratio was okay, the prices are not very expensive but compared to the quality… not very good

We are staying here for a night and the staff recommended The Pentland. Probably one of the most disappointing meals we have ever had and such sad end to our trip to Scotland. The food was bland and tasteless. I don’t rate my cooking, but even I could do better. Our waiter was friendly - however the ice princess (hostess at the entrance) was frosty and rude. I enquired about gluten free options and she just shoved the menu at me and moved on to talk to others. I would hate for anyone to book this pricey restaurant for a special occasion as it’s definitely not worth it. As a side note - there appeared to be cubes of auger scattered all around our table and others. Not sure what that was all about or if they just hadn’t cleaned. Bizarre!

Dinner for 4. Vienna Schnitzel, a favourite. Veal OK, crumb coating a bit soggy. Chips - too fat, too raw in the middle. This dish should really come with a classic potato salad, viennese dressing. We asked for mustard - there was none! In a 4 star hotel that has extensive F and B facilities? Peace was disturbed by a tray of glassware being dropped. Trying to get the bill at the end was a struggle. Staff too busy. Service was...below expectation. We chose not to eat here again on our 5 night stay.

My husband and I received a gift voucher for dinner bed and breakfast at the hotel, which we were looking forward to. We booked The Pentland for dinner expecting great things, especially as we had been impressed by the overall vibe of the hotel until then. We were seated at our table and my husband was firstly given the wrong drink. Not to worry. Ordered our starter which although small, was ok. Staff were very disorganised; standing around chatting, one extremely casual and another serving with a glove and hand behind his back. I feel the standard of etiquette should be upheld more consistently. To be fair, the main came promptly. My husband had a chicken main which was a piece of chicken breast on what looked like a dissolved chicken stock cube and a few pieces of veg. I received a medium ribeye steak. The steak tasted and looked cheap; mostly fat and all I could taste was grease. It came with 6 undercooked hand cut chips stacked up, some on the vine tomatoes which were wrinkled beyond recognition and a minuscule amount of some kind of onion sauce. The waiter then had to have a confused rake around for a steak knife at my request. Turned down pudding to be on the safe side. I am absolutely no food snob, however if I was to have to pay £93 for this (£40 for the steak alone!!) and it hadn’t been included in our voucher, I’d have complained. Thought it was better to walk away and enjoy the rest of our holiday instead.

Staff need more training. Sirloin steak was referred to as STIRLION steak. He asked if he could clear the plates when one of our cohort was visibly still eating. Waiter called one of our group granny which could have been offensive. She was not easily offended. Dinner was awkward. It's sad because the food was delicious but the service let it down. Breakfast at the same restaurant the same day was 5* . We reviewed this hotel as we were considering it for our wedding. We decided against it

After having a lovely Christmas Day Lunch in 2021, we booked again for 2022. Our 3pm sitting was running late & we eventually were seated at 3.45. All four main courses were served barely lukewarm & the 2 who were having the roast beef got only one slice of beef. Coffee was served minus milk & sugar which we were told was coming, this appeared after 10 minutes by which time the coffee was cold. The cheeseboard was served with only 3 portions of cheese & 4 tiny oatcakes. We complained about this & more oatcakes & cheese were brought to our table. All in all for £120 per head this was a total disappointment for our family of 4 & will not be returning.

Had a disappointing and irritating dinner at The Pentland. Drab decor. Good looking stripped down menu. I had the chicken schnitzel prices at £19. If that was all I’d ordered it would’ve been a disaster. It was dry and small, slightly charred around the edges and very chewy. And that was all you got. I ordered the fries and cabbage, at £4.50. Without spendings the additional £9 I’d have probably been left really hungry. I hate this stealth charging. Feels dishonest. The cabbage was soaking in water. Some chard we ordered was brought out and was kale, salted to within an inch of its life The coconut rice pudding and roasted figs was only plural figs in as much as it had three slices of eighths of a fig and the rice was undercooked. Bread and butter pudding again a very small portion. I mentioned these things to the main server and the response was that my comments would be fed back to the executive chef. Jolly good

I soon as we were seated , one lady came and put the food on the table and left...no explanation... no offer for tea. We were there for the afternoon tea !!!! Where is the tea ??? So we waited and waited...finally saw a young man asked him for some tea...he looked so surprised ..and asked what kind we wanted...so we asked him what kind he had..he looked puzzled than said green , peppermint or earl grey ! That was it. Well better than nothing. Then we had to wait agin to get the tea brought to the table and finally we could start the snack and pastries which were very good. I would have loved a refill of hot water for my tea but never got a chance as there was no one in sight to do any service. The service is horrible and it is too bad as it is a nice environment and the food was good. The people sitting at the tables close by ours were also very unhappy and mainly ended up ordering coffee..(seems it was an easier thing to do). Very disappointing.

Given the grand setting and distinctive whiff of landed gentry about the place I was underwhelmed by the food and service. I had an overpriced chicken burger with chips for £14, I was transported back to the 90's! Boring and bland both in presentation and taste. Breakfast is also served in the Pentland which does offer an eclectic range of options for early morning, and haggis is also on offer its that's your thing!

We celebrated our wedding at the Dalmahoy and returned for an evening meal using a voucher we’d been gifted. We were given a table on the upper tier of the restaurant and it was uncomfortably cold due to air conditioning being blasted in. We mentioned this only to be told it was because of COVID and couldn’t be turned off. The service was friendly but very slow, we waited around 20 mins for our drinks. Once the courses started coming I have to say the food was delicious and very well presented. I would say it’s a bit overpriced and the menu can be a bit misleading with various supplementary costs added in everywhere. Settling the bill was a very odd experience, we were directed towards the main hotel reception by a waitress before the front of house redirected us back to her spot where she instructed a young man to push certain buttons on the till. We never yet did see a copy of our bill however it was clear from the price that they added a 10% service charge which I don’t mind paying, I just like it to be a gesture rather than a requirement. I think the mandatory service charge is definitely reflected in the attitude of the staff who are complacent, a little slow and robotic. Improvements needed. We did finish off the night with a nice cocktail in the bar which has a good atmosphere and comfortable seating.

We had tried to book a table to coincide with our stay in hotel and were so disappointed when we were advised that it was fully booked. However, on check in my husband managed to secure an 8pm cancellation so we were delighted. We arrived at restaurant only to be told no record of cancellation and no table ready for us (reception had warned my husband they would say this and that he was not to accept!!) The host suggested we visit the cocktail bar whilst our table was prepared which we did, but there was a wedding party and we couldn't get near so we ended up having to stand around for half an hour. (Not the best start to our evening so far)The host did come and find us and we were led to our table. The restaurant was virtually empty and only a couple of tables had guests so don't know what the issue was!Thankfully the food was good and our waiter was lovely so it wasn't a complete disaster. As a table of 4 we all had 3 courses and enjoyed a number of dishes from the menu including the Thai Seafood soup and goats cheese starters, chicken and steak mains and desserts with no complaints. Our lovely waiter even managed to add a sneaky scoop of ice cream to one of the desserts :)

We stayed in The Dalmahoy during a family holiday to beautiful Scotland, and enjoyed dinner and breakfast in The Pentland Restaurant. The dinner menu was great and the service was impeccable. The waitresses were informative and accommodating, (my 5 year old being particularly smitten with one of them) and they kept the place running smoothly, being attentive without being intrusive. As mentioned, the menu was very strong and the dishes were nicely presented. We had a relatively early dinner because of the kiddos, so were among maybe 5 or 6 other tables being served. It was quiet, and enjoyable. Then, bam, in bowl 30ish loud and boisterous golfers, all on a jolly, and it was difficult to hear ourselves amongst the throng of sports casual clothing. Then followed another 20 or so. Luckily we finished our desserts just as the noise is added to as another wave of golfers stride in. Now, obviously, being a golf course, in a part of Scotland famed for it's courses, there will always be golfers staying at the hotel, and they probably make up 75% of the yearly business, but my God, they're loud. If you want a really good, relaxing meal, book early, and get yourselves out of there by 8pm. Aside from the noise, a top notch restaurant.

After 45 minutes we asked to move as the noise was hurrendous. When we got to the restaurant we realised the reason we couldn't eat until (now almost 10pm) was because they couldn't be bothered to open half the restaurant (it was nowhere near fully booked). On the dinner package we found that the food was really good, but a lot of it had supplements for the dishes, not just the ones you'd expect like steak. It ended up costing us a lot more than we'd expected and I've never had a more expensive bottle of water. The afternoon tea was huge, and we found that we didn't actually need dinner afterwards. My husband had the gentleman's afternoon tea and that really was like a meal in itself, and saved us having a second dinner at the Pentland. The tea was much better value than the dinner.I wouldn't say that the service was fantastic - at times it seemed that they didn't have enough staff to cover all the tables, so on occasion we had to ask for something twice before we received it.

Setting: The restaurant has a lovely view of the golf course and feels very 'country club'-esque. Not complaining though and was nice to feel like we were eating somehwere fancy.Atmosphere: This was fine. The place was a bit quiet for a friday night at 8 but it did feel refined so plus points there.Service: This was good for us. Attended to by 2 waiters throughout the evening. Food was prompt and the only delay we had was asking for the bill which took c5 mins longer than expected to catch someones eye.Food: The menu had the knack of making the food sound much more exciting than it was, which mean you weren't blown away when it was served. Not that the menu was misleading, it just left nothing up to chance and no room to be wowed. The food was technically well cooked across our starters and mains but the fact that I've just had to google the restaurant menu to check what we ate means it clearly isn't memorable after just one week.My wife had butternut quash and muchroom ravioli, and whislt I appreciate it it was only a starter you'd expect more than one piece of ravioli in there! Also, the way the menu is written leads you to think the mucshrooms would be in the ravioli, however the ravioli was actually served on a bed of mushrooms- my wife assures me they were good mushrooms though, even if the ravioli was a little on the wet side.I had the confit chicken, which I genuinely can't remember except it was served on a board. For mains she had the beef blade with liver which was fine, nice to try calf's liver. I had the stuffed guinea fowl leg. It came with a chicken bon-bon which was great - I just wish I'd had two of them. The guinea fowl was good but the haggis was less seasoned than your normal shop bought haggis which was a shame.Value: All this came to around £60 for the two of us. For a nice meal this is about our standard payment amount and I wouldn't have wanted to pay any more but as it was I didn't feel cheated out of my money.

We booked the restaurant as a treat as we had been there before a couple of years ago. The lounge area prior to the restaurant isn't very inviting, there's a log burner in the lounge which wasn't in use, even on a winter night and the seating layout is a bit odd, not really made for after dinner drinks. The restaurant is VERY bright, it seemed every light in the room was on and as it was dark outside was being reflected off the windows making the need for candles on tables a bit redundant. The staff were attentive and friendly but the food was not worth the price paid, I had the steak, medium - it was alright, the chips were what I'd expect from somewhere a lot cheaper and my wife's meal was 'alright'. In my opinion the restaurant has everything it needs to be a comfortable and inviting place - needs to work on food quality and the details though. The Dalmahoy should be a lot better than 'alright'.

I have never walked out of a restaurant before in my life. But we went here for my fathers 70th Birthday, and it was terrible. Service was really slow, then all 6 meals were returned as the food was cold, two plates of food included raw lamb - even the waiter said it was uncooked. We then waited 30 minutes for the replacement food. during which time we noticed our cutlery was dirty - bits of old food stuck to three sets. The restaurant manager was frosty, and uninterested and really should not be the manager of this restaurant. We therefore involved the deputy hotel manager who promised he would resolve the problem. However sadly, the replacement food included raw liver, raw duck, tough beef - clearly microwaved, and cold veg. So all six plates were returned and we left. It is inexcusable to serve raw food, cold food and provide dirty cutlery. We have visited this hotel for years and will not be returning again. Very sad that it ruined what should have been a very special occasion for us as a family who had travelled miles to be together for this celebration.

Good selection on the menu, wasn't disappointed. Very relaxed and staff had a warm and friendly manner. Good to be able to order cappuccino and hot chocolate for breakfast. Poached eggs brought to your table. Nothing was too much trouble.

The food was high end restaurant quality, tasty - breakfast is self service, and again good, service was sow, and clearly attitudes or stress were affecting service quality

At first i did not reserve a table aas an hotel guest. I wanted to eat alone and good.So i was denied at the restaurant because of lack of resevation. So i went to the hotel manager and asked if he could solve that. And of course he did.All together. Service of staff is friendly, correct and with a smill. My Sirloin steak was indeed rare to medium (30 pound, no that was the price) And i had soup of the day one bottle of water and 2 tomato juices. Total was 60 GBP.

Buffet Breakfast Bar was at least 10 m long with fresh items sure to please everyone. Choices ranged from Haggis of some kind, blood pudding, tomatoes, sausage, scrambled eggs, waffles with maple syrup, many kinds of fresh fruit, yogurt, cheeses and meats, breads and muffins, danish and croissants. That is but a sampling. Truly a feast for the eyes as well as the palate.

Are dinner twice and reservations are required. Nice selection. Steaks pricey. Would have preferred a more extensive wine list. They said it was formal but business casual was ok.

Looks cheap turns out very expensive due to the add ons a room cost £169 and that is without dinner. Dinner is very nice but you will need extras that become very expensive.

I ate here with a group of friends while on a golfing break. The dinner we were treated to was absolutely delicious. My food was smoked haddock and mussel broth followed by medallions of sirloin steak. Both were excellent. For sweet I had some sort of orange ice cream with chocolate and it was very refreshing. The ambiance was very nice and the waiting staff very professional and polite. We also had breakfast here next morning and it was one of the best I have ever had. Plenty choice to suit any kind of breakfast you required. Only one word for it - superb.

After an unusually hot day in Edinburgh, I fancied getting out of the town centre for dinner. I was dining with a business associate and it was suggested that we head out to Dalmahoy. Not somewhere that I had ever thought of going for dinner but off we went.Firstly, the staff at the Marriott, Dalmahoy are first rate. We received a professional but friendly welcome, not the somewhat stuffy 'welcome' that you get in some high end hotels. The Pentland Restaurant itself is a lovely setting with beautiful views. the menu is interesting with some great ideas. The wine list is fairly short but with some great bottles which are priced on the higher side but were not that unreasonable. My colleague had the Rump Steak (medium rare) with Sauce Bearnaise (£25) and I had the Goats Cheese Ravioli (£16.95). We ordered the 2011 Louis Jadot Pinot Noir (£34) as something that should go with both dishes. The steak was flawless. Perfectly cooked but beautifully browned on the outside. Also, while a steak knife was provided, you could cut this with a normal knife indicating a well sourced, well aged and properly rested steak. It also tasted divine as did the sides. Of real note were the onion rings - the batter very crisp and they were not greasy. My main, the Goats Cheese Ravioli was served with oven baked vine tomatoes and a tomato based sauce with sultanas. This was vegetarian cooking of the highest order and my initial doubts at not ordering a steak vanished. The wine, was an absolute joy and good choice matching up with both dishes well.Desert was also a highlight and i do not have an especially sweet tooth. On our servers recommendation we ordered the bitter chocolate mousse and the Glayva Creme Brulee (both £6.50). Both were stunning but we agreed that the Chocolate mousse was the better of the two deserts. Someone in the kitchen has real skill!I must also note that our waitress, Danielle, who has not been at the hotel all that long, is a credit to the establishment. She knows the food on the menu and was attentive, friendly and efficient without being intrusive.Well fed, we decided to retire to the cocktail Bar attached to the restaurant and made our way through a house cocktail 'Passiflora' and a Brandy Alexander. Both were great but this is the best Brandy Alexander that I have had anywhere. A second round followed and my associate had a Brandy Alexander based on my reaction to the first and concurred as to how good it was. I ordered a Gin Martini (Tanqueray 10, stirred, straight up with a twist). It arrived with a lime twist which is a first for me but this is one of the best Gin Martini's that I have ever had. The Barmaid, Natalia, has some real skill with cocktails. I suspect that she is destined for great things.Well fed and watered, we piled into a taxi back into the city centre. I will be back, that is for sure. Yes, the prices are on the high side but you really do get what you pay for.

A birthday meal with the family at this restaurant a the Dalmahoy Hotel. Overall the food was very good, fresh and of a high quality with attentive service. It is not a place to eat on a regular basis unless you have a large wallet but good for a special occasion. It is not far from Edinburgh but feels like you are away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The staff and the setting are absolutely superb. However the food does not live up to expectation. I have been married for 32 years and for the first time my husband returned his meal. Not once but twice. The steak was dreadful. While my meal was quite tasty it was not as hot as it should have been.Even having been supplied with a steak knife you could see that he was having a real battle. While they replaced his meal and offered to replace it again we ended up eating separately and my husband basically ended up eating the trimmings.. Yes they did refund the cost of his meal but it was supposed to be our 'Valentine' meal. The menu is also very very limited with only one vegetarian option. Would I eat here again? Definitely not.

Really impressed by this restaurant. We had a personal waiter who was able to answer all of our food queries and the chef was easily able to satisfy our requests. The rhubarb creme brulee was amazing and they even gave us ice cream instead of sorbet as per our request. The setting of the restaurant was pleasant and ideal for a romantic night out.

We enjoyed a two-course evening meal at the Pentland restaurant. For a main course, my boyfriend chose sea bass and I chose pork belly, hake and watermelon risotto. An interesting and surprisingly delicious combination. We ordered two side dishes too - snow peas and garlic rosemary potatoes. We were pleased with the size of portions and quality of ingredients. There was a good choice of dishes on the menu. For dessert, we both chose chocolate ganache with passion fruit marshmallow and passion fruit gel. I am a real chocolate lover but the ganache was a little disappointing. Too rich and stodgy – more like a slab of chilled chocolate icing. The marshmallow was lovely though. The service was very warm and efficient. The restaurant is inviting but the background pop music didn’t seem particularly appropriate. All in all, we would definitely return if staying at the Dalmahoy but probably not otherwise.

A very special evening had here - we hadnt booked and was a saturday night but they fitted us in and were attentive and informative. Very happy to change things for my dietry needs and service was top notch The waiter knew his wines and made great suggestions. But didnt try to push expensive wines or encourage a bottle as ive known in some places. It was a bit pricey. But worth it as food was amazing and everyone was lovely.

Yesterday, my partner and I had a very pleasant 3-course Sunday lunch at this restaurant. This was part of a "Itison.com" voucher offer which I think we bought for £29 which provided two persons each with a 3-course set lunch and a bottle of wine between us . However, we discovered that on 'normal' Sundays, we could have the similar set menu at £19.50 per head, just cost a little more but still very good value for menu at such an exquisite establishment.Design-wise there a sense of understated luxury about the restaurant with tablecloths and rich, drapping curtains. Most tables offered guests a fantastic view of the golf course which was owned by the hotel. For starter, main course and dessert, there was a choice of 3 items each to choose from. The food was very well presented and tasted fresh. My partner and I both had smoked salmon for starters. For main course, he had chicken breast (very moist and tender), and I had roast beef (also very tender). For dessert, he enjoyed his "Knickerblocker Glory" and I loved my Cherry Flan (it was warm and delicious) accommpanied with Vanilla IceCream.Waiter service was also very pleasant and friendly. For lunch, we discovered they are only open on Sundays, but they are open every evening. We feel lunch is better, not just because the prices are more reasonable but we can also enjoy the lovely view of the golf course during the course of the meal, which we cannot do for dinner. We would be delighted to visit to this restaurant again, especially if the Sunday lunch set-menu remains. It's also a great place to take friends and visitors to Edinburgh, or to take your elderly mother to treat her for a lovely Sunday lunch!

We had a lovely 3 course Sunday lunch at the Pentland Restaurant at the Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club which is a new service they are offering on Sundays.I treated my mum to afternoon tea in January when the restaurant was closed due to a kitchen refurb and remember thinking it would be nice to return for a meal to the restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised by the standard of service and quality of the food including a balanced array of choices for starters, mains and desserts. We will certainly return - next time with family or friends. The 3 course Sunday lunch was just under £20 per person.Parking was easy and we walked our dogs around the grounds after lunch. A pleasant Sunday afternoon.

I have just returned from the Dalmahoy following a New Year Lunch with family am disappointed to report that the generally positive reviews made by others on this site cannot be echoed by my experience. When I say that our lunch booking was for 1.30pm and we left following three courses at 5.15pm you will get some idea of the appalling level of service we have just experienced. If only slow service was the only problems that we experienced. When the food did eventually arrive it was an embarrassment to the 4 start rating this hotel falsely inhabits. After 1hr 30min wait our starters eventually arrived and for £8.50 my "prawn cocktail" I was expecting something worth waiting (90mins) for - instead we received a miserable looking spoonful of Marie Rose drowned crustaceans atop the standard pile of iceberg lettuce - literally flung on the plate- a dish that would have been more at home in a 1970's Little Chef. Having to send back the stone cold dessert was the final straw and the 20% discount offered to us for the discomfort will not recover the 4 hours of my life I wasted by visiting the Dalmahoy this afternoon. Thoroughly disappointing!

Ordered 2 Fish Suppers. Service was quick. Fish was freshly cooked but the batter wasn't crisp. Chips were soggy. 'I'm no expert' but I think an oil change may be needed. At £8.50 each, it was edible & reasonable value.

The cafe is now 'permanently closed' as part of Sainsbury's disastrous cost cutting measure. It may be that Livingston will be one of the supermarkets to get one of the promised replacements (it's a big Sainsbury's) but as of April/May 2022, there is no café.
