Pentland Fry in Edinburgh, City of

Definitely the worst and definitely the most expensive chippy in the area. I’d say worst in Edinburgh but Bar B Que exists. I’ve been going for 12 years and the fish, chips and puddings etc are always awful. Pizza’s are pretty good to be fair, but I’m never going back. Balerno Fry is infinitely better. Never get re cooked chips or pale anemic fish in there. Really really bad.

Batter was badly overcooked. I could hardly eat it. The fish was tepid. I will certainly not be returning there again even though it is in walking distance from my home.

Not been here in an age and won't be back..got a fish supper which was awful..think the fish had it been lying for ages under the lights .the battery was heavy and chewy with no taste ..ended up giving it to the birds..really bad.

This well-established chippy has been well run by a local family for many years (if not decades). Can't comment on delivery as we always phone in our order and pick up and its always ready in 10-15 minutes. I love their chicken and mushroom pizzas which are more of the deep-pan style, crispy on the outside and well-loaded. Better than Dominos IMO. My son loves their chicken nuggets. They also do chicken kebabs and all the classic chippy fare and sell chilled beer and wine. Some of the negative reviews on here seem a little unfair, especially the guy who got too many chips!

Having travelled 300 miles to Currie, we were looking forward to a quick meal so rang ahead with the order, including expected arrival time. Appearing exactly when we said, I was surprised to find that they needed me to repeat the order then began cooking it. Place was empty but it still took over 15 minutes to put everything together. Getting to the house (3mins), we were all disappointed with the offerings. A huge wastage of chips with the equivalent of 2 portions being binned. Not because of quality but purely volume. I would find it difficult to see the average person being able to eat the portions we had. The chicken wrap was described as a bit over cooked although ok. Battered sausage and the fish batter was, frankly, inedible. Bland, no crispiness and a few mouthfuls was enough. The fish and sausage themselves were nice but certainly one visit here was enough - will be looking farther afield next time I am looking for a Fish Supper in Scotland.

I visited on July 14th the wee dumpy man (owner) prepared my food moaning he can't get/retain staff then rang through my food over charged me £6 90 total £17 90, when challenged this evening he couldn't remember and asked me to show proof of payment when ringing it through the till I repeated my order but instead of medium portion of chips I says small to which he interjected proving he had no problem remembering a truly low stunt to pull on regular customers I won't be back and I understand why he is not getting footfall in a busy area reputation must proceed him hopefully he will learn that stealing costs him more in return custom than the few pounds he pickets from trusting people

Just eat order cancelled an hour after accepting. Service recently has been appalling - don’t waste your time with this place.

Only place near accommodation I was staying at that was reasonable, great friendly staff BUT worst sausage & fries I've ever had . Most of which I binned & went hungry .

Ordered a small pizza & small chips through app for delivery, took well over an hour !! When it did arrive was cold !! Was so hungry just reheated in microwave. Will never order from here again

Under COVID rules you have to call up, place your order, and then collect from the chip-shop. This work very well, payment by card on pickup is also seamless. Typically we order a 12-in pizza [for me] and a Scampi supper [for my wife]. During the various stages of lockdown in Edinburgh we have eaten probably 20 times at the Pentland Fry. One tiny gripe - last night the Scampi [according to my wife] was very different and much less tasty than normal. Did you change your Scampi supplier?

Great spicy pizza and creamy pasta combo. Really tasty. Came earlier than expected. Can’t add a photo as it was too good to wait 😂

Terrible customer service when we called up to complain that the paper had stuck to our pizza and it was inedible. 'well we aren't taking another one up there, we are far too busy' was the reply we got. That speaks for itself, avoid this place.

Went to collect an order & was approached by a very rude just eat driver who works for The Pentland Fry. I was parked outside waiting for my food and the driver pulled up beside my car in their car & said move, I said sorry she said I am here to collect my food & I replied so am I, she said I am a delivery driver I’m here to collect food I can’t wait so move! I did not move for this rude woman. If your thinking of getting a delivery don’t!! She is certainly not someone you want working for your business.

Ordered online for 3 fish to be ready for 6.30. Got to shop to be told I had to wait on chips then they gave all the fish away to other people! They then said they would start cooking my order 30 minutes after I ordered it. “That’s just the way we work” was the only explanation offered. My complaint was ignored. Given this is not the first time it’s happened to us we cancelled and gave our business to someone who actually cares about customer service!

I occasionally stop here on the way back from fishing and have always been very happy with the quality of their food. Can't understand the negative reviews at all. My wife and I had a fish each tonight and they were delicious. Lovely thick fillets of fish with just the right thickness of crispy batter.

First and last time chips were cold and fish was battered so much thick greasy unpleasant experience never again anybody who says this is a fantastic place is off their nut

I used to live in the area and went here once a week. 20 years later I returned and wasn't disappointed. Love it!

Don’t know why I go to this chippy? It must be the worst chips ever always cold. Had white pudding this time must have been a leftover from yesterday along with the chips. But I will try again some time.

having just moved to Balerno.......I am on a mission to find the best chippie in the area and this is best .....so far

5) El lunes a las 20 pm, el pedido fue de 2 cenas de salchichas, regresó al automóvil, abrió y no quedó impresionado por el aspecto de las papas fritas, aunque procedió a probarlas. Ojalá no lo hubiera hecho, grasiento, frío y realmente no agradable. La salchicha se veía cálida y 'flácida' después de 1 mordisco, ambos decidimos renunciar. Los dejamos en la parte superior del contenedor directamente afuera para que cualquiera pueda ver la calidad que obtendrían dentro. Sugiera que todos pasen, es de lejos el peor por mucho tiempo y costoso.

Solía ser mi lugar favorito para pedir pizza a partir de ahora, nunca volveré a encontrar una mosca cocinada en mi pizza, las mujeres por teléfono ni siquiera se molestaron cuando la llamé para decirle sobre la mosca. La entrega también se retrasó 15 minutos después de esperar más de una hora.

I got charged £3.40 for a large portion of chips. WHAT!!! They were truely awful... I put them in the bin rather than give to my kids. Don't go here.

Decidimos tener una cena de pescado y chip de camino a casa desde la playa y llamado por aquí. Ordenados para nosotros 6. La comida estaba bien, pero cuando nos comieron las patatas fritas eran underdone (era la grasa lo suficientemente caliente? El bateador de pescado) era horrible y el pescado estaba seco y una textura peculiar. Sin duda el peor pescado y patatas fritas que he tenido. Muy decepcionante.

pizzas are great & all fried food is great except the chips. This chippy is 5 mins walk from my house but I drive 5 mins up the road to Sofia's in Currie as their chips are nicer. says it all really.

En ocasiones utilizamos este lugar los últimos 30 años. Siempre tenía unas patatas fritas y kebabs. Decidimos coger una gran Donner kebab y tamaño de la porción de papas fritas. La gran kebab era más como un pequeño con muy poca carne en un pan de pita. La ensalada, salsas y, sobre todo, la calidad y el sabor fue genial. Sólo desearía que era más grande. Las patatas fritas de tamaño no era mucho pero eran cocinados a la perfección. Las chicas que sirven eran muy amables. Las Freidoras . era maleducado y muy desdichado. Si las raciones eran más grandes que sería una fácil clasificación de 5.

Pedimos 2 kebabs mixtos esperaron unos 20 minutos (hubiéramos esperado más si hubiera sido decente) ¡la carne de kebab y el pollo estaban flotando en grasa! Kebab no tenía sabor. El pollo tikka no tenía sabor y tenía un regusto amargo bastante extraño; a la "salsa de chile" le faltaba una pizca de chile. La pitta pequeña después de absorber un galón de grasa ya no podía sostenerse más y se dio un gran baño alrededor de la caja de poliestireno intentando respirar. Espero algo de grasa, pero esa masa sin sabor de carne de gato terminó en una collpa de Colinton bin Pentland, siéntete libre de recuperarla y ofrecérselo a otra pobre alma.

I often pop in for a portion of donner meat as a snack.Added a wee bit onion and chilli sauce at £3 a pop is surely the bargain of the century.Welll done and keep up the high standard quality of donner meat.😊

This is a first rate chippy. We have used for years. Clean and hot food. Also do lovely pizzas and pasta.

This chippy is decent and have a fantastic selection of food I have used them on more than one occasion and have never had to complain. They do a lovely bit of fish but ask for a box to keep the batter crispy

went to the peatland fry for a pizza, was a quick service but disappointing. we ordered a margaritta pizza. when we opened it up it was very oily and the base was very raw. would not recommend this to anyone.

Estaba con ganas de probar comida desde el recién reformado Pentland Fry. Pedimos una pizza de jamón y jalapeños, pero me decepcionó que recibirá sólo una pizza simple jamón. La salsa de chili no tenía especias y aguadas. La pizza bruschetta tenía una pequeña cantidad de tomates picados pero estos había caído la base. Cena de pescado no era realmente a la altura. No será dar prisa en volver.

very poor quality food here... i expressed my dissatisfaction to the staff who were totally disinterested.... fish supper consisted of a tiny piece of fish absolutely smothered in oil-soaked batter so it looked much bigger than it actually was... very deceiving.

I've just waited 1 hour for a takeaway from a restaurant that is a 15 min walk from my house! I could of walked there and back 4 times over for the time it took to be delivered. The food is stone cold and the...

I have used this chip shop for years, I live in Balerno and have two chip shops nearer my house but I've always driven the 4 miles to the Pentland Fry as their food was always fresh and great chips, however, the last few months I've been two or three times and the quality of their chips have gone down hill dramatically, every time we've been given the dregs of the chips, it's basically the crispy bits and hardly any decent potato filled chips. It's like they have changed ownership and the new manager doesn't care as much. They do a delivery service, don't use it, it takes an hour and a half to deliver to Balerno!

He estado aquí varias veces desde su traslado a la zona local y siempre pensamos que la comida muy buena. La razón por la que fuimos aquí fue por las 16" pizzas, fui por jamón y piña. Nunca he tenido ningún problema, lo único que estoy de acuerdo con quien contesta el teléfono es cuando te Ring a fin de recoger podían estar un poco más atento como vienen como abrupto. Aparte de eso recomiendo esta "fish and chips".

I know pizza can be hard to cook but unfortunately our pizza was pretty raw in the middle when we got home. Ingredients fresh but we ended just eating the crust and binning the rest. Shame. Sorry about the review.

Had a smoked sausage supper & battered sausage supper. It smelt funny in the car on the way home. Chips were fatty, smelt of dirty dishcloth & just not nice. Battered sausage was rank, it tasted like it had been fried the day before, then fried again and again..ugh. the smoked sausage was OK, but really, how difficult is it to warm up a sausage? On the whole - close to inedible.

I think the other reviews are somewhat unfair. I've never had a bad experience and been going there for years. Only chip shop in the area you can rely on being good every time.

I ordered a pasta dish for collection and drove the 10 minute drive to collect. Dealt with the member of staff and collected my meal. I returned home to find that they'd given us someone else's order. Extremely disappointing but, hey, everyone makes mistakes. I called to make them aware and arrange for the correct dish to be delivered. The woman on the phone was rude, unapologetic and frankly uninterested. She did not apologise. No surprise really as she's normally miserable when I pop in. She said that they'd send it to us and when I asked if we could be put to front of delivery queue given it was THEIR error, she said that simply wouldn't happen and we'd have to wait an hour. I considered driving back at that point but couldnt do so as it'd involve upheaval getting children ready again. They didn't care a jot. No apology, awful service and not the first time at this chippy.Seems that in the "Just eat" age, they care not one jot for their customers. They also seem to think their restaurant next door is something special when it's not. It's an eat-in chippy at Juniper Green.Reality check needed. Avoid!

Bought fish and chips for two. Never again. The batter was chewy and the chips cold. It's a shame because the carry out is in an ideal position but I for one - and the rest of my family - wont't be returning
