Reaching Pennies by foot from the center of town you would approach by Botchergate then turn left , approaching pennies there is a bin just outside the cafe , for off loading your unneeded litter , The cafe is rather on the small side but cozy , the max of space would hold fourteen people , Pennies closes early in the day , @ 3 pm , the decor is straight forward basic the cafe notice board shows a homely working but to me is fine , You get the regular roll call of locals attending there and it shows the social tick over of life with Carlisle people , The food is of a wholesome menu and selection of home cooked meals , snacks , etc and is a normal cost across the board for Carlisle for tummy filling dishes , if asked for you could possibly have made a dish / plate of yum yums that is not even upon the menu board , so for " they who dare ask -- will find " ,One of the back bone dishes upon the menu is the all day Breakfast a typical British signature dish , small ( £ 4.00 )or large ( £ 5.00 ) which holds a comprehensible selection + a small side plate of toast and you can tune up on your likes and dislikes as to what you get put upon your plate , A few choices of type of coffees there but also cold drinks too, From a cup to a mug size and up to a tea pot of tea served , A true down to earth CAFE jaunt for the budget traveler , The sourced food supplies Pennies are from a good local stockist who are Carlisle grown producers , Pennies also caters for the special diet need for food stuff allergies and medication needs too so ask and please say to receive :-) , Their is also a sign post out side the front of the shop for chaining up the bicycles , they have no baby high chairs for use , Upon the Tait street one way traffic flow system is road side parking but please check for sign post regulations and rules of parking at that road side just before to Pennies Cafe of Carlisle Cumbria UK .

Visited half a dozen times in the last year. The owners know how to run a village pub/restaurant. Tastefully quirky interior design. Excellent but down to earth wine menu. Top quality cask ales. Dog friendly. Very convivial atmosphere and a range of seasonal events. But top of the shop s the quality of the food. Last night we had the best cheese soufflé ever. Then the tastiest lamb, perfectly cooked. It melted with tenderness and a happy organic rearing. The steak was sublime. We’ve covered many signature dishes in recent months and always come away delighted. Prices are reasonable for the quality delivered. Well done to the whole team. A must visit.

We hired Cumbria Gourmet burgers for an event at our house where we had a large number of guests coming. The food was great and the service was brilliant.

A wonderful time yesterday celebrating our mums 80th birthday. Excellent food and staff and the party of 14 very well catered for, would definitely recommend. Favourites from our food choices were the pea risotto, pulled pork wrap and fish and chips (excellent chips!). Thank you for a memorable afternoon.

Found this place by chance and what a find. I'm not vegetarian but tried the butter nut squash curry and rice and walked to the river to eat it. All packaging (including knifes and forks) bio-degradable. The curry would have given my local curry house a good run for the money and not one bit of plastic in site. Outstanding value for money and a lovely view over the river. In none Covid times we would have gone to the pub but this was one of the few gains from this outbreak, a great curry overlooking the river. Only regret was I didn't buy one of those brownies.
