This cafe has just won Best Cafe in England Award..........whilst this is a lovely cafe and adjoining shop the menu is definitely lacking. For people with dairy or egg intolerances or requiring vegan diets there is nothing . We mentioned about dairy/egg allergies and asked if they had anything vegan. Was told nothing on the menu but they could "veganise" anything on the menu. Great we thought...... we opted for a vegetarian sausage bap which we were told was actually vegan..... after about 10 minutes we were told they didn't have any; but they could rustle up a delicious vegan breakfast instead. Excellent we thought....... after about 20 minutes the food arrived with dry toast, (no dairyfree spread), a few undercooked mushrooms and tomato, a small pot of beans and a couple of handmade potato cakes which were nice ..... all topped off with a fried egg!!!! They clearly do not understand that dairy and eggs can be very dangerous for people with allergies. Lovely cafe if you can eat anything otherwise don't bother

We came for the Italian restaurant and we weren't disappointed. The food is the best we have had in a long while. The portion sizes were generous and the staff were very attentive. I would highly recommend

Went for a date night with my wife. I had spicy chicken fillets as a starter, penne and meatballs for main and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. My wife had garlic mushrooms, bolognese, and finished with panacotta. The food was excellent, the best I can remember eating for a long time and the portions were generous. The waitresses were really pleasant and service was lovely, with each course Arriving in good time. Nice ambience and we will definitely go again!

Avoid. Overpriced. Slow service: no apology for delay. Female staff unfriendly. Tasteless (cumberland?) ham completely overwhelmed by the pickle. 1 tiny piece of soda bread and a thimble sized jug of milk for pot of tea for two. Had to ask for 2 more milk refills.

Overall it was a very positive lunch. The lady on the till was very friendly and the service was speedy. We ordered 2 Greek salads, a portion of chips and 2 coffees. The Greek salads were absolutely delicious and well worth the price and more; the chips were a la McCain and were an absolute rip off for the cost; coffees were barista friendly. Loved the doggy cafe and the clean toilets.

Always good. Staff always friendly and service usually quick. Food good and arrives hot. When finished you can have a short walk to the abbey to walk off your food. However check opening times.

First time there since reopened. Staff were extremely rude and unkind, especially the women in charge. We heard very good reviews about the food, but it wasn’t the best standards. The women in charge made us feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. Although we live extremely local, we definitely will not be back anytime soon! Very disappointed

Left the car there to walk Hadrian's Wall, which was really useful, although slightly regretted getting takeaway drinks as they were so extremely slow it delayed our start, and very pricey for what they were. When we got back we went to Lanercost Pizza (in the cafe) for dinner. The pizza was really good, can't fault it. But the staff, especially the person in charge, were horrible, casually misogynist, hostile and resentful. Really don't understand this attitude.

We have visited 3 times in the last few months. First visit for lunch - food took 35 minutes so we had to order extra drinks Second visit, again for lunch, food took 40 minutes “because the chef was new”. So decided to visit just for afternoon cake and coffee on our third visit. Website says open 7 days until 4:30, but when we got there there is a sign saying open Wed-Sun until 4pm. As it was 4:05 I asked the staff if they were open, they said “no we close at 4pm”. I mentioned the website says the cafe closes later, but they rudely responded that it wasn’t their fault as the previous owners had the website and they couldn’t change it. After 6 years of being a regular customer, we will NOT be back ever due to the prices, staff attitude and poor service.

A wonderful time yesterday celebrating our mums 80th birthday. Excellent food and staff and the party of 14 very well catered for, would definitely recommend. Favourites from our food choices were the pea risotto, pulled pork wrap and fish and chips (excellent chips!). Thank you for a memorable afternoon.

Visited half a dozen times in the last year. The owners know how to run a village pub/restaurant. Tastefully quirky interior design. Excellent but down to earth wine menu. Top quality cask ales. Dog friendly. Very convivial atmosphere and a range of seasonal events. But top of the shop s the quality of the food. Last night we had the best cheese soufflé ever. Then the tastiest lamb, perfectly cooked. It melted with tenderness and a happy organic rearing. The steak was sublime. We’ve covered many signature dishes in recent months and always come away delighted. Prices are reasonable for the quality delivered. Well done to the whole team. A must visit.

Found this place by chance and what a find. I'm not vegetarian but tried the butter nut squash curry and rice and walked to the river to eat it. All packaging (including knifes and forks) bio-degradable. The curry would have given my local curry house a good run for the money and not one bit of plastic in site. Outstanding value for money and a lovely view over the river. In none Covid times we would have gone to the pub but this was one of the few gains from this outbreak, a great curry overlooking the river. Only regret was I didn't buy one of those brownies.
