This is probably my shortest review ever. We had not quite "just" had our lunch at Doddington Hall Grain Store and we decided to continue our journey to where we had originally been heading so we could get our post lunch tea and cake. The Garden Centre is enormous but we found our way to the restaurant fairly easily - maybe its the allure of the tea! Anyhow we have grown to hate scones because our recent experiences in Scotland at any rate have been that they are dry-ish and tasteless and have very little "filling" ie if its a cheese scone you might, just might spot a piece of cheese on top. We had a Pennells Apple scone and it was more than adequately loaded with pieces of cooked apple and you could taste the apple too. The staff were incredibly friendly and just a pleasure to talk to. Good quality branded earl grey tea (Twinings) too so it was just perfect. Thank you so much guys.

At just after 9am last Saturday morning the restaurant was already buzzing. It is obviously a very popular place for breakfast and the staff are really geared up for it. Excellent range of breakfast choices on offer and very tasty food. Huge restaurant area and lovely surroundings.

We decided to have a snack, so I asked for a cheese and onion toasted sandwich. What we weren't told was that it included Chips, I don't eat them often and certainly didn't want them with a toasted sandwich...and it came with salad (2 small tomatoes and lots of Rabbit food)....and the cost was over £8 each. I didn't ask for Chips or salad so why did they serve it? An expensive sandwich as I barely touched the Chips and only ate a small amount of the Lettuce.

The overriding impression of Pennells, particularly the cafe is that it is trying very hard to be something it isn't. Catering firmly for the OAP demographic, the cosy ambience suggests a cake platter and a large pot of tea. That is certainly available, however the hotplate servings of breakfast and various meals are the more obvious lure of the place. The food is OK, nothing more. It is slightly overpriced for what you get and I have to say I was very disappointed. It could and should be much better, but the cafe seems to have settled on the grey pound and they're comfortable with that income

Myself and my husband came to your restaurant today looking forward to a lovely breakfast. When we arrived we went straight to the counter where a couple were being served, we just walked along to the breakfast hotplates where a couple were being served with their breakfast. We then walked back to the counter where it was our turn to be served so we asked for two beakfasts to be told by the lady member of staff that we couldn't have breakfast because it was now finished to which we said but it is all still on the hot plates . To which the lady said No again it was finished. We couldn't understand this, so we just walked out of the restaurant having not purchased anything. To us this was not very good customer service and so with this you have lost out on us having 2 breakfasts and drinks and not coming back again .

Having never been to this garden centre before as we arrived we needed the ladies. In the restaurant there was nobody available to ask the location. We were meeting family here and required a table for 8. Again there was no one to ask about puting tables together to accommodate this. I believe a supervisor or catering staff member appeared and her attitude to us pushing tables together was basically rude. Stating we should have asked her and pointing out fire exits. We had thought of all these measures, including clear walk ways to serving area, also making sure we would not be intruding on other customers. Her attitude to my adult daughter was patronising and condescending. We did not make a big thing, whilst quietly pushing the tables together. At the end of the day with our custom where we all ate and had 2-3 beverages each, the restaurant made a fair amount of money and to be treated this way was totally un-called for. A course obtaining Customer service skills, Customer relations and etiquette should be made available for this individual! Rather than us experiencing her power trip persona. Apart from this, the service was good and the food very nice.

We all had Christmas Dinner. The service was shocking. The staff were friendly and doing their best. You would think with that set up they would gave waitress service. We stood in a queue for 30minutes before we were served. The cappuccino was just warm milk frothed. Tasted like camp coffee. The food was thrown on the plate and swimming in Bisto gravy. The Brussels were murdered they were all soggy, the parsnips well they were mush too. The turkey was dry and the mash was lumpy. Think the carrots were frozen. For two dinners and two cappuccino it was £22. Well you get what you pay for. 🤷 by the time we got it to the table it was stone cold we had to ask for it to be reheated. It us a very prestigious garden centre which also houses a brilliant butchers and fruit and veg with lots of individual retail outlets which are also excellent. The restraunt certainly does not live up to your expectations. It is obvious it is all about £££'s and not customer service or quality foods. We all left most of it. Tables are small and crammed in for maximum. People. No one clears your table and there is nowhere for customers to put their trays. Would not recommend it. 😕

The pork loin in apple sauce was so tender, tasty and hot. However the rest of the lunch vegetables and potatoes were nearly cold. The roasties were overdone and very hard to eat. I suppose we could have asked for it to be reheated ,but we shouldn't have to. Disappointed overall, the only saving grace was the pork !

Went for a bit of lunch for my birthday. My plate came out with the side covered in mustard which I only discovered when I got it on my clothing. Complained to one of the ladies at hot food counter and I got 'oh right' as a response. No acknowledgement that the plate was smeared with condiments I hadn't used or the fact that my clothing had yellow stains. By the time I had scrubbed the worst of the mustard out of top in the toilets my food was cold.

The grumpy girl said “you can get coffe out the machine!” Oh ok we said but another lady told us to get a freshly made one here! Reluctantly she cut the cake and made the cofffee! Very rude young lady! On the way out a lady collecting cups was so nice so young girl ought to take a tip from her colleagues! She then proceeded to moan to other staff members. If I were her manager she would have had a severe talking to! Service was poor! Sausage roll dry and would have been better warm but heaven forbid we ask her to heat it for us! £14 for 2 drinks, cakes and a sausage roll! A smile or politeness would not have gone amiss!

I’ve visited Pennells restaurant many times for coffee and on this occasion thought a lovely buttered teacake would be a nice treat. I nearly dropped through the floor when I saw how small it was! I have seriously never seen a teacake that tiny before. I know the government is keen on tackling obesity, but this is ridiculous. At £2.19 it was terrible value for money. On top of that, my friend was told she could not redeem her “free drink” voucher, on which she had collected the required 9 stamps from purchasing drinks on previous visits. No explanation of this was given as the server said they did not know anything. Pennells is now off my list and I’ll go somewhere where you don’t need a magnifying glass to see your teacake!

We had one of the daily specials - pork and apple stew. Large lumps of meat in a glutinous quite greasy sauce. At least the meat was quite tender. The veg were really overcooked. The carrots had been cooked so long they totally lacked flavour as did the leek which were pale and wet. This kind of cooking is like a throwback to a poor 1970s works canteen. Very disappointing. We visited Pennell's garden centre two weeks after the death of my Grandfather in memory of their wedding anniversary as they use to really like visiting Pennells. Once we were seated there were a further four tables also seated after us. When the restaurant manager came over to bring the menu, my mum tried to order drinks to be told "you'll have to wait, I've got five tables in before you and there's only two of us". So we waited, watched another member of staff attend to all four tables we had watched come in after us. Then eventually a young waiter came to take our order, exceptionally rude attitude. We proceeded to order to be told "your gonna have to slow down mate", he then removed his mask to cough! We had arrived at 2.40, it was now 3.10. We had asked for a jacket potato when he stopped the conversation said I best check the time and walked off. He then came back and carried on. Then he came back again to tell us there weren't any left so we just ordered cake. It was practically thrown at us as he came back saying "there ya are" in a raised voice and inappropriate tone. The service on this occasion was horrific. The restaurant manager plus the waiter need some training in customer skills. Disgusting attitudes and behaviour from start to finish.

When we asked for a vegan menu, this caused a delay in finding one. We ordered off the menu. Someone came to say what we ordered was not available. Next choice was met with a similar delayed response with someone coming from the kitchen. When the 3rd choice meal was served, it was not great. A piece of plastic was also within the meal. Four customers called for morning coffee and a snack on a mid-week morning. Queuing was 'socially distanced' but with food and drink on display on either side, there was no explanation of what you were really required to do. We actually picked up two bottles from the cooled cabinet, which was incorrect. When you arrive at the till, there is a full menu, but by then you have passed the cakes etc. in their containers so it is difficult to remember what was on display !However, order taken after a rather slow queue and we were directed to a table of choice. At the table we were given the required note to put on our details for the Government requirement, but were not told what to do with it once completed.Food and drinks arrived and the quality was fine. The glass supplied for the cold drink still had a lipstick smear on it and was therefore sent back. The new glass which arrived in due course also had a lipstick smear. I suggest the glasses were actually clean, but this sort of thing is difficult to clean off and should be noted.Would we call again, well, if you have time to spare !

I like the idea of supporting local business especially after and during the present pandemic. Part of that support is eating out and a visit to the summerhouse centre next to Pennells meant we could try this restaurant. There was a short queue as to be expected and most of those in the restaurant were finishing their meals. We were led to our table by a very pleasant member of waiting staff, given a couple of minutes to choose what we wanted and upon her return my wife chose the soup and I went for a cheeseburger. We also requested a Diet Coke and a sparkling water. Our drinks were delivered by another member of staff who basically plonked a tray on the table, turned and left.45 minutes later I stopped a lady cleaning tables and asked if our meals were likely to be delivered anytime soon. She came back and told us that my burger was being constructed as she spoke. Again the tray was plonked on the table, no apology for the delay or pleasant informing us of what we had.The soup was hot and tasty but sadly my burger arrived with tepid chips, a sad looking salad that looked like it had been prepared very early and left out and no coleslaw as advertised. The burger itself was fine but not great. Maybe I should have called someone at that moment to request a replacement but worried I would be waiting another 45 minutes. While we were there the restaurant was not busy, it only takes a moment to scoop soup and even giving time to cook a burger, not 45 minutes. No apology for delay and service without a smile. When I paid I informed the person who took my payment my displeasure, she asked if I wanted to speak to a manager but really having told her I hoped it would be passed on, I doubt it.Not recommended, there are many other places nearby and in Lincoln itself.

Asked for a cheese n pickle toastie at 3.10 pm (you can order up until 3.30pm). First thing the person serving did was check her watch. There always seems a problem to serve in here. Oh yippee. When it arrived I was underwhelmed. A hard tasteless toastie yippee just what I wanted. Broken teeth for lunch. I think ill pass on eating here. Its just not worth it

Disappointingly poor. Overstretched inexperienced staff meant missing elements to the afternoon tea and a lack of attention to detail. Horseradish’ missing from beef sandwich, forgotten crisps and mould on a strawberry. No clear menu so could not question what was missing. It was only later seeing another couple provided with crisps and looking on line we were aware. Crockery, linen were lovely however having been here previously for afternoon tea I’d give it a miss in the future and go else where.

What a wonderful display, this place has everything . I borrowed a wheel chair for the first ever time to push my mum , pennells you made it a joy , lovely wide walk ways , plenty of turning space all was accessible to us both . Visited your lovely restaurant , how refreshing was this , yes long que but so well organised everything was running so smoothly waiting was not an issue all staff working as a great team . Seating a joy , we sat in the area especially reserved for disabled visitors , I wish all large restaurants would take on board this very well thought out area . Truly enjoyed my visit , first time user of a wheel chair and I thank you for making it so very easy . Well done to you all , see profit and customer comfort can go hand in hand

My Son treated me to lunch. We ordered and waited for 40 minutes noticing later customers eating before us. I had a vegetarian baked cauliflower dish. It tasted a little strange, but not wanting to upset my Son, I continued eating. I mistook burnt bits for mushrooms, but as I progressed through the grey/brown mush to the burnt base I had to accept defeat. Not the usual standard.

Popped in to do some Xmas shopping, and felt the need for a cup of tea. Tempted by the breakfast we had the sausage cob- and WOW- for just over £3 3 sausages in a large baguette, and the quality of said sausages was just SUPERB-real proper Lincolnshires. Didn't eat again till tea time!

Food wasn't great quality and ultimately that is why we went there. Service was OK, friendly table staff during a busy period. Value for money I guess, but I'd be happy to pay a little more for better quality food. It was a bit overcooked/dry and out of the four guests, three were not particularly pleased with their food. The fourth was a jacket potato with cheese, so that was OK.

Yes, it was a great choice my friend and I made to bring our children here for lunch and afternoon of fun! Weather wise it made sense too.....kept out of the rain!.....but we were glad we decided to spend about 4 hours here....had lunch, browsed around the plants and pots and garden pot animals!.....then inside to enjoy the amazing food section!....

We visited this restaurant on Sunday which was our first visit. We enjoyed a wonderful roast beef dinner served with fresh vegetables and home made Yorkshire puddings . The food was nice and hot and the young girls serving were very careful not to just throw the food on the plate but did it nice and neatly . The staff were all very friendly and polite . Will certainly be visiting again very soon

As we were staying in the area we decided to visit based on reviews. It was obviously the wrong time as swathes of the shop were closed off due to staff putting up Christmas stock. As such there really was no point in trying to pick our way through. After a few minutes we left. On another day with access to the whole shop my rating may well have been higher.

If you’re visiting the garden centre and fancy some refreshment, the obvious answer is the Garden Centre Restaurant. At Pennells there is a large café selling drinks, hot lunches, sandwiches, cakes and salads. I had a self-service salad where I could choose which items I wanted. At £7.50, it was one of the less pricy items on the menu and tasted good. Midweek, the restaurant was doing a steady trade, but there’s lots of room so you don’t feel crushed.

A big garden center with something for everyone to look at. Restaurant excellent, food akways looks fresh. Breakfast was really good value. I like the fact that the queue for food is split so coffee and caie separate from main meals. Fresh food counter always displayed very well. Plenty of parking.

Went to Pennells for plants and compost for hanging baskets and bought a lot of stuff. We had some great choices and to be honest I spent more than I had bargained for. I was a bit disappointed with their fruit trees as I did not think that they were value for money as their size was small, so I didn't buy any. I think maybe I would have to be more perspective before buying from Pennells as I did find another place in Souhall where the fruit trees were better and cost £5.00 less

Took mum in law to centre for lunch. The service was good, and looking at the hot dishes, they were bug hearty portions so probably value for money if you are really hungry. We opted just for fresh sandwiches that came with token salad and chips. Tasty enough but quite expensive. Open large eating area with low comfy seats option if you wish.

My partner and I like going here but were very disappointed when we went for afternoon tea the other day as we noticed that they had put the price up by 25% and then they had cut each of your choice of sandwich to only one and that spoiled the whole thing really.

This is a great place for cooked meals as they are always freshly made, plenty of choice and you get a great plateful. Does tend to get busy at the weekends so best to book your table. Friendly service. The cakes are amazing don't go if you are on a diet. Lots of people meet up with friends for a cuppa and chat. You can walk it off by having a good browse around the shops and a massive array of plants to choose from, it really is a great place

The pubs and restaurants around were heaving so I opted just to get a sandwich here. They had pre made sandwiches wrapped in the chiller. Was about to pick one up until I saw fresh stuff being made up behind the counter. I ordered a tuna mayonnaise. It come on a beautiful malt bread, fresh salad and a handful of crisps. Doesn’t sound a great deal but actually filled me up. Great quality. It’s one of these places where you fetch your own cutlery etc. Not bad at all. The roast option looked good but didn’t fancy it as I had a long journey ahead of me back to Pembrokeshire. I’d return

We were pleased to see some vegan options in this bright and spacious restaurant with a mixture of regular seats and tables and more comfortable tub chairs. The chocolate brownies looked good but we opted for the vegan fruit scone, which was lovely and a decent size as well. Unfortunately there was no dairy free spread available but Di the Supervisor provided a spread which they use for cooking and baking but it tasted fine on the scone. Di was very pleasant and helpful as she also confirmed the sweet potato, spinach and chickpea curry was vegan friendly and also mentioned they were planning to add more animal free selections to the menu.

Amazing food. I was very very pleased with my visit. I was served by a woman called Emma with blonde shoulder length hair and glasses. She was so lovely and welcoming! Gave me exactly what I wanted unlike last time when I was served by Sharon who I found to be quite rude. There was a good selection of food that was reasonably priced. I’m very happy with this service. Thank you. Also love your cream cake!

Went to the Fox with 5 friends (couples). This pub is close to home however we dont tend to go in there often. The night started well, drinks were flowing and we were having a good time. We overheard one of the bar staff asking for illegal substances, one of the group made a passing comment, and another lady (presumably the owners wife) stormed upto the table stating she'd be "watching us like a hawk". We calmly explained that we thought she was directing her hawk like vision at the wrong group and maybe she should assemble her nest a tad closer to home... She was clearly and unfortunately intoxicated herself (professional for working behind a bar, I know) and demanded that we must leave after our next drink. Despite working behind the bar, she was outside drinking and smoking most the night, one of the group asked her friends for a lighter, to which her and her group said "do not answer"- as if we werent human or present. We are local people and felt personally attacked by the lady's mannerisms . Especially baring in mind she was a senior member of staff (owners wife!) We put plenty of hard earned money in the pub tonight and were left feeling like criminals, we even volunteered to be searched to prove our innocence, which was promptly refused. All we wanted was a few nice drinks at our local pub for a change and were left feeling like outsiders by individuals (staff) who are clearly incapacitated and incapable of deciphering between drug users and young working class persons trying to enjoy a drink. At the end of the night I went to talk to the actual owner about how we'd been treated, expecting some clarity and lord forgive me for asking but perhaps an apology. Baring in mind this man is supposed to own several pubs, he seemed to have absolutely nil sense of customer service and even though he wasnt in the pub most of the night night was talking to me like I was in the wrong, solely due to his intoxicated wife (staff member) giving him an extremely one sided version of events - which were totally incorrect. One of our group didn't appreciate the way he spoke to me, and was rude back - as anyone with a backbone would be after the way we were treated tonight. He raised his voice and declared us all barred, despite me talking to him politely and calmly, all he was worried about was that he'd had a long drive, not that us as a group have lives, problems, and jobs too. Its unfortunate that a pub in such a good location treats its local punters so poorly after spending a small fortune in their unkept pub. Other than us, there were two people in the pub - I now understand why. I appreciate there are two sides to every story, however other bar staff have since said we were treated unfairly and that the owner and wife were extremely rude to us as a group. Its disgusting and people like this should not be running a pub. Until new ownership is found we wouldn't dream of returning even if the man (who'd through no fault of ours had a long drive) thought with a level head for a second and decided to unbar us. We are young couples who felt discriminated against through totally poor judgement tonight and what was supposed to be a great night out with friends for a change has been morphed into a poor display of total incompetence by its own owners. This pub is always closing down/re-opening and with owners as such it would come as no suprise to happen again. Hope new ownership comes and we can make the Fox a proper local.
