Pen y Cae Inn in Powys

I’ve got to say this is the BEST hotel and restaurant we have EVER been to! Stunning rooms, patios and outside grounds. Everything in the room looks brand new, fantastic decor, furniture, beds, bedding and amazing bathroom and shower. Fantastic service and food in the restaurant,with fires, sofas and the most polite and helpful waiter. Each meal was amazing and the desserts likewise. Dog and children friendly! The zoo was a fantastic addition for my teens and I understand they’d done a Halloween event with smaller creatures earlier in the day. Shame my kids weren’t little again! Every member of staff is very welcoming and friendly. And will 100% be returning. Have already posted pics for family and friends recommending this place, Worth every penny. Can’t wait for breakfast tomorrow :)

Service was excellent and it is clean and welcoming. We haven’t visited since the previous owners were there. Had a meal in the restaurant and a couple of drinks. Pricing was ok. But the food is lacking compared to previously. It’s ok, but the kitchen used to be a lot better in my opinion. We had Cajun chicken and steak. The onion rings as a side were a bit cold and chewy. Nothing that needed to be sent back but a bit disappointing compared to the previous standard. I didn’t like the garnish on my chicken, it was sweet, and there was balsamic glaze on both our plates which I didn’t like. I’d go back but probably not for food. It’s a shame because they’ve got so much right.

We fancied a night away in Wales to visit the waterfalls and were so glad to find this gem on Airbnb. The pub is very cosy, staff are great and food is amazing. The owner also came to introduce himself which was nice. The accommodation is just a 2 min walk from the pub and used to be a primary school which has been cleverly converted into lovely rooms. Would definitely recommend this place.

After a walk down to Henrhyd Falls and along Nant Llech we were ready for our lunch. We searched beforehand for a pub that allows the dog to join us and a menu with a few vegetarian options and ended up here. Being a little hungry we shared some Brie to start, this would be a mistake, not because of the quality but because the mains were so big we struggled to finish them, but being troopers we carried on. For our mains I went with the classic Fish and Chips and my partner went for a Vegetarian Curry, both presented well and made with quality ingredients and as I say large portions, it probably didnt help that we also had a side of Garlic Bread as well. After a bit of time to breath we decided to share a Waffle as a dessert, obviously it was great and a perfect way to finish a great meal. With our meal we had four soft drinks and in total it came to £72.00, not cheap, but as they say you get what you pay for. The pub/restaurant is a lovely cosey place from a casual lounge area with settees to the little restaurant area, both look very clean, tidy and welcoming. Then we go outside and theres the mini zoo, bizarre but a lovely little walk around to see the cranes, meerkats and goats, perfect for a family. A great place to eat for all the family including the dog, just book in advance to be sure.

Very poor service on this visit unfortunately. Food arrived very late (didn’t feel like eating it when it arrived as it was so late), had to ask for cutlery and napkins. When we spoke to staff about our experience, we got a very unconvincing sorry. Food was okay but menu hasn’t changed in a year! Think it’s gone downhill since they expanded, giving their accommodation guests priority over their faithful customers. This used to be our ‘go to’ restaurant for a special occasion but we will now have to think again as I had a very disappointing birthday.

The Food here is fantastic but I’d like to say that Aaron’s knowledge and exceptional customer service takes this pub/restaurant to the next level. I would recommend this place to anyone coming to the area. Aaron’s passion for the food and drink was breath taking. You can see why he is so passionate as the food and drink is worth singing about Keep up the good work Pen Y Cae. Diolch yn fawr iawn

Been here loads of times over the last ten years and 99% of the time the food has been lovely and of a good quality. We revisited last Friday and were lucky enough to get a walk in table with a great view over the animal sanctuary. It’s nice to see that the menu has been added to as the main courses were previously limited to 5 choices, now it has around 10 (including specials). Great quality meat cuts and great staff.

Another visit to the lovely Pen Y Cae Inn. From the food, to the service, everything was of high quality. We were greeted and served by Aaron who is a master of his profession and clearly has a passion for his work, this was lovely to see. There is a limited food menu but this is because the food offered is of very high standard. All members of the party left clean plates and thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Staff were also kind enough to bring out birthday cake for the birthday boy. Thanks all!

No other words than exceptional food. And the service provided by Aaron was another level. He knew everything there was to know about everything we ordered and his personality and kindness shone . What an asset to the pen y cae. Diolch xxxx

Absolutely impeccable staff and beautifully presented premises. ,Aaron is an absolute diamond and so attentive and professional with an excellent knowledge of ales. The food is excellent and the service is quick and efficient. Recommend anyone to pay a visit but to book prior as very popular, or even better book a room in their 'Sleeping Giant hotel' which is also immaculate and beautifully presented. The whole place is a credit to the owners and the added feature of the micro zoo in the garden patrolled daily by Ronnie and Reggie the Parrots who are quite happy to sit at a table in the garden with you. Loved our weekend and will 100% be back.

Lovely restaurant/pub, food was great and staff were all lovely and attentive. Great choice on menu, food was served quickly and efficiently after being ordered ( table of 10), also handed in birthday cake, and they brought it out and sang happy birthday.

We were here last year for a christening and thoroughly enjoyed the slow cooked roast beef, back in Wales for a wedding so booked Sunday lunch. I was concerned that it would not live up to my memories but should not of worried as superb again. One roast beef, one roast lamb and roast chicken, all plates empty and delicious gravy boats completely drained. Cannot wait for next family event in Wales so we can go back , Staff and service as good as the food.

Currently sat in the beer garden adjacent to the the mini zoo writing this. Where do I start. Called in just by chance, hadn't booked. Not a problem. The service, absolutely amazing. The staff are consummate professionals and are by far and away the best I've ever encountered. The food, HOLY SHIP, without question the best meal I've ever had in the UK, without any doubt this is way above pub quality and will rival any top restaurant anywhere! But without the insane prices to boot. If you're in the area, or even further afield, it's somewhere that you're missing out on. My partner and I will be back. Very soon I hope.

This place would definitely have more than 5 stars if available. It's not the cheapest place to eat but it's not pub grub. I'd say this is a restaurant type food . Service was amazing . All the staff were exceptionally friendly. The food was well presented and cooked to perfection. This is a pretty big restaurant with plenty of tables up and downstairs. And the added bonus. You can go out the back and there is a small zoo with a few birds and animals. The place is exceptionally clean and absolutely spotless. We visited by chance the 3rd of September after a long funfilled day at the show caves. We hadnt booked but the staff made room for our family of 5 and wow im glad they did. Absolutely amazing service, the food was the best we have had in any restraunt, we were able to go and enjoy the park and mini zoo before dessert and were told we could take as long as we like and kept our drinks for us. We cant thank you all enough. Truly a magical unique place and we cant wait to come back.

This is a great pub with great food. Staff were so lovely especially the woman who took our order. She's brilliant with kid's. I went with my 17yr old granddaughter,my sister and her granddaughter who were visiting from Wolverhampton. We had a lovely afternoon. The zoo is very small but lovely. My great niece thoroughly enjoyed. The 2 parrots outside were very entertaining. We didn't know that they talk until we went back to the car. We all got back out and went back to them. They say hello and goodbye. Not sure what else they can say. Great day out. I'm going again soon. Thankyou to all the staff

Recommended by a visiting walker, whilst touring the waterfalls. Ended up going to the Inn twice during our stay in Wales and enjoyed both experiences. Fantastic friendly service (especially from Claire, at the bar), great local knowledge, dog friendly, fantastic local beers plus HIGHLY recommended the Fish & Chips!!! The best we’ve EVER had! Beats our local Rick Steins restaurant down in Poole, Dorset!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent bank holiday lunch to meet up with family. Chef Anthony looked after things for us and all the young serving staff, managed by Claire, were excellent. Special acknowledgement to the young man checking cutlery, clearing plates etc., he was great. The food was very good, as usual, the lamb a particular favourite. We look forward to the hotel opening.

Really enjoyed our evening at The Penycae Inn ate as a family of 7. Amazing food and service was the best we have experienced in a long time. A big thank you to all concerned. A special thank you to our waiter who was at hand whenever we needed something and was very informative from start to finish. Lovely location and the animal park was a lovely surprise for the children, Well done Penycae Inn. We can’t wait to return.

I have to say that thius place was just a last minute random turn on our way back to hotel. I was surprised by how good I felt inside and how we have been treated by staff. It was fantastic experience. We sat next to 2 beautiful showcased bikes. Food was deliciuous and only thing which prevented us to have dessert was portion size. I had gammn which was size of a plate. My wife had burger which she couldnt finish. We felt very cozy with all the paintings owner collects hanging on the walls. It helped with atmosphere. We could hear that people in kitchen had a good time as well. A lot of laughts. I spoke to owner at the end and he is fantastic chap. Next time I will come I will stay at his place! Guaranteed.

I had the fish and chips here today and the fish was better than the fish I had in Rick Stein's restaurant in Padstow

What can be better than the perfect Sunday roast for our family to celebrate my wife’s birthday. The inn is picture perfect, service, food and whole afternoon was a dream. The grandkids loved the outside area & the zoo. I think this will be a regular spot for us to come. Many thanks Pen Y Cae Inn

A lovely place to drink and have a meal.. relaxed but stylish. Friendly staff and great service. The food was of great quality and flavour. There is a small zoo at the rear of the venue, great place to take the children and a great addition to the venue which is free of charge. Lovely garden there so look over the countryside. Stopped for a pint of Worthingtons and a cuppa tea, sat outside on a bench under a parasol. The first bench was rotting and we disturbed some ants so we moved to another bench. Wonderful Sunday lunch. Slow cooked roast beef was spectacular and vegetables well cooked. Other options such as pork, lamb and nut roost were just as good. Service was also very attentive. One of the best Sunday lunches I have had for a long time.
