Our second visit to Smoke, and this return visit was a lovely experience. Still not quite as unique as when dinner was served at Hampton Manor, but excellent quality food is a relaxed environment with knowledgeable staff

Update Feb'2014. (Now!) Well established alternative menu and setting from the Hampton crew. Limited but innovative selection of dishes where the focus is on sustainability and provenance, supporting local seasonal produce. Beautifully prepared food, well presented with efficient and friendly service.

Was in the area and managed to snag a table on the day for 6.30pm on a weekday. Cheese puff and crab taco mini starters were sublime. Bread and butter was given before our courses started. We opted for the 3 course menu. The beef tartare was nice, quite zingy from the orange, but nothing life changing and quite salty. Smoked eel starter was cooked perfectly, so tender and buttery. Would recommend this dish. Went for the cod loin as main which was again cooked perfectly and so tender, but salty. My friend got the guinea hen which was also cooked perfectly but salty. These were all served with their specialty potatoes on the side. Desserts were the highlight (potentially due to lack of oversalting). The Eton mess was gorgeous. Tarte tartin serving was a bit strange with the slice of cheese just separate on the plate (perhaps for those who can’t decide if they want a sweet or savoury end?). Service was lovely throughout and they were very helpful in explaining the dishes. Overall wouldn’t highly recommend unless they can fix the heavy handed salting. A shame because everything was cooked perfectly!! It was £85 for 3 courses, which I felt was quite expensive.

Absolutely loved the atmosphere, food, drink and service. Emily(Scottish) was very welcoming and talked us through the menu, although we love our wine always great to hear from the sommelier who was very knowledgeable and a really pleasant guy. This is not a stuffy place, there’s an excellent vibe, we sat at a large table which could easily seat 4 separate couples and great if you like people watching. Reading the menu the food sounded quite simple but the execution is outstanding, with a real depth of flavours and the Smokey tastes just Devine! We could have easily stayed there all day. Recommend the smoked mackerel or scallops to start, Hereford beef with incredible boulangere potatoes! Dessert we had the blue cheese and apple. Incredible! The nibbles we could have enjoyed a plateful! I loved the cheese cup! This was a lovely birthday gift and I will definitely return. I’ve wanted to visit for a while and taste Stuart Deeley’s food after watching him on masterchef! Amazing talent and a great team offering something a little different. Thank you

Excellent, in a word. Visited here for the first time yesterday, and what a treat. Opted for the blind 5 course option, and every course was a delight. The highlight was the scallops but every dish was excellent. Harry and the team were equally great - very attentive, friendly and helpful, making our evening one to remember. The restaurant is relaxing, and certainly a place we will be looking forward to returning to. Highly recommend.

We had been waiting to eat here for a while and it was exactly what we’d hoped for - complex flavours and delicious dishes based around simple ideas. Fabulous! Nothing pretentious, nothing too ambitious or silly, just good cooking and a feast for both your eyes and your tastebuds! They give you the option of the A La Carte (£85pp) or the Blind Five (£110pp) menus, which we opted for the later. The only sore point of the night is that we decided not to reveal the five dishes beforehand, meaning after being in anticipation of eating here for so so long, we did miss out on the famous Boulangère potatoes and ginger baked alaska that we’d been eyeing up. That being said, the food we did try was absolutely insane, and blew our socks off. The snacks were good, the bread even better (they serve it warm!!) and the first course better still, being trout and beetroot, so fresh and vibrant. Then the beef tartare. Wowee. Wowzas with trousers. There aren’t words in the dictionary to describe this, being a perfect combination of every type of sensation, sweet from the orange, spicy from the pepper, crunchy from the pine nuts and everything else in between. Superb! Scallops in a foamy butter sauce came next, followed by the main of Iberico pork, artichoke, and mushroom. The pork dish was outstanding, genuinely would eat it 5 times over. The pork practically melted when you looked at it, the sweet puree being so flavourful and with deep caramelised notes. Just wow. The pudding was fighting an uphill battle given the Alaska was not to be, but it did the job double, pleasantly surprising us both with the creaminess, combination of malted milk ice cream and chocolate delice. Chefs kiss <3 The snacks made for a fine end to a fine meal. Would highly recommend it to everyone, and would love to try more of Stu’s cooking after his Masterchef triumph. The service was good throughout, being attentive but not intrusive, and the atmosphere is vibrant, buzzing and exactly what you’d want it to be! Bravo

Lunch. Our first visit since their re-vamp. Located in the walled garden of the very impressive Hampton Manor. Smoke uses high-quality ingredients cooked over coals.Head Chef is none other than Masterchef: The Professionals 2019 winner Stu Deeley. You can either choose from the menu or The Blind Five chosen by the chef. No guesses for which we chose. We had the pleasure of being seated on the recently created chefs counter table. To start is a couple of tasty snacks. Then, freshly-baked sourdough with cultured butter. Dishes to follow were Aged striploin tartare, red pepper, orange, pine nut. Frazer's scallop, cocoa pod glaze, Jamón butter sauce, maitake. The main course was Iberico pressa, artichoke, king oyster mushroom served with their signature boulangère potatoes (which are insanely tasty!) Then Colston Bassett blue with tarte tatin. One of each desserts of baked alaska and chocolate delice. The food is incredible, set in a beautiful location with a relaxed atmosphere. Staff and service were excellent. Thank you, Stu, for looking after us and Vanessa, who kept us in check at the counter. Since our first visit, they have been listed in the Michelin Guide, and it won't be long before those tyres award something more.

Sunday lunch with a twist! I recently visited for Sunday lunch at Smoke, and was amazed at the quality of food, hospitality of the staff, and the cozy atmosphere in the venue. Set in a small building, Smoke looks very unassuming from the outside (but is set in very picturesque grounds). However, once inside it has an incredibly cozy feel. Think historic brick walls, oak beams, large glass windows, and mood lighting. There are traditional tables of 2-4 seats, a row of 6 along a chefs table, where the plating up of starters and desserts is completed (fascinating to watch!) and a large “party” table in the corner. We sat at the chefs table, and the theatre of the chefs working was just fantastic. The food was delicious, and we left feeling very satiated! A big shoutout to the sommelier, providing a great deal of information on the wines available, and a great recommendation of a Chilean red wine. Another big shoutout to one of the chefs, Josh, who took the time to talk to us and answer questions whilst plating up food. He also put on a great show when torching the top of a brûlée for dessert! He is a credit to the restaurant.

The food was delicious. Unfortunately the atmosphere was not at all welcoming. I was sat in the thoroughfare to the other room where staff were delivering food, it made me feel uncomfortable and “in the way” I asked if we could move but the member of staff said no other tables, so for the duration of the meal was very uncomfortable. It spoilt a very special occasion. The experience was underwhelming and unfortunate but I would not be going back, a pity as the food was good but for the price point it should be.

What a unique experience. Set in a kitchen garden amongst beautiful original glass houses. This place is something else. We’d booked for the set lunch (three options on each of the starters mains and desserts). The attentive and super friendly staff showed us to our table, looking out towards the glasshouse (home to a central planting of peppers, herbs, tomatoes and other seasonal produce that turned up in our dishes). The meal kicked off with a beautiful sourdough, garlic and dill emulsion, delicious butter and cured meats. It was amazing. I had trout for the first course (note the elderflower soy which was outstanding) and my wife had the burrata which came with a tomato Bloody Mary, sweet and sour tomatoes. Also outstanding. Next was the cote de boeuf (£25pp supp) which was a dream. Lovely silky bernaise, gorgeous dressed leaf salad with crispy onions and fondant style potatoes with a marvellous onion jam. We finished with a panacotta (top drawer) and a lemon meringue pie. All dishes were served with the most enormous smile and a great explanation. When we asked again about the parts we’d loved the servers were able to answer with knowledge and enthusiasm. The decor is casual, in keeping with the spirit of the converted farm building. We loved it all. Oh and we’d been in for coffee and bakes that morning too. HasBean coffee and first rate assorted cakes, breads and pastries. Truly special.

Booked a table on a Friday night for a celebration and was shown to a very large table slightly off on its own which was perfect. We had the £80 set three course menu which was lovely. We started off with grazing food which we did not expect but was all very tasty and a perfect start to the rest of the food to come. We had sparkling South African wine which was a perfect bubble start to the evening. The further courses arrived which everyone loved all washed down with further bottles of both white and red wine which we was helped to choose by the staff who were excellent. This is a lovely restaurant located in the grounds of the main house and although it's on the more expensive end of the scale was perfect for a special celebration evening.

It was a £60 set menu and the beauty of it is you can't pre Google Google decide what you want. The serving staff tool us through the menu so we could pick the best choices. What an incredible experience at Smoke this past Friday. I opted for the taster menu whilst my wife went ala carte. Some of my favourites were the burata with the bloody Mary sauce, the Iberico Pork with black garlic main and the smoked Devon Eel in preserved lemon. Not to forget the amazing homemade sourdough we enjoyed once seated, complimented by salamis, kale and the most incredibly light cheese and onion tarte. We both had the rhubarb and custard baked alaska, which was one of, if not the the best desert I've ever eaten. Although due to the size it became quite sickly towards the end. Perhaps in a slightly smaller format or in a trio of deserts, although this may be hard considering the technique used to make it. Service was also excellent, so thank you.

A pleasure to try novel flavours (lots of favourites, but beetroot and Berkswell cheese, was the biggest happy surprise) and dishes that I've not experienced before at other restaurants, showing the creativity of the chef/s and really living up to the Michelin Star. It can sometimes be a gamble with restaurants, but reading reviews about the quality of the food and changing menu, meant we were confident for a good evening out (the star of course helped too!) We had the set menu in the main restaurant (beautiful wallpaper), but deviated off the wine flight with expert advice from the sommelier. The Chefs (Monty and his team) were wonderful at explaining each dish and showing their expertise and excitement for the combinations - making the whole evening a very merry one! I can't wait to try a new menu set, always good when you find a beautiful location and trusted chef to come back to.

Ate here one evening as a part of the Staycation package. The tasting menu is well executed and well presented with a succinct summary of the dishes along with chef recommendations as to how to best enjoy. We supplemented with the wine pairings, always quite a bold move in my opinion if you have specific likes/dislikes yet a great way to sample wines you may not perhaps consider. Sommelier was good in describing each wine. I find with tasting menus that you fare well with some dishes and not with others but all in all a good experience and well recommended. For me three "sweet" dishes was one too many. Staff are lovely and friendly, not an air of stuffiness. Dress code is smart casual apparently but I felt it was much more on the casual side. Felt a little overdressed. Then again with good food and surrounding you cant really be overdressed.

We visited a few weeks back for our belated 50th birthday celebration. It was certainly a night worth waiting for. We used to visit quite often before we had kids so it was at least 8 years since we visited. We had drinks in the bar first which were great and then we went for the 7 course taster menu with wine. The dining room is nicely dark, very comfy seating and just a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Service throughout was very friendly and we never felt rushed. Each course was very tasty, the crab especially yummy as was the extra cheese course. Not a cheap night out by any means but very special and just really excellent all around. It is also very local to us so hopefully we will return in the near future.

My main comment would be that you are being watched and it is obvious. At one point I had only put my cutlery down, I still had food in my mouth, when the waiter cleared the table, I do not think that is acceptable. They need to make it a little more relaxed. Would still give them another chance!

We had dinner in Peel's as part of the hotel's 'midweek staycation' package, and decided to treat ourselves to the wine flight to accompany it. Service was attentive yet laid back throughout, in keeping with the decor and ambience. Fresh seasonal produce takes pride of place on this menu reflecting the sustainable ethos at the heart of the restaurant and hotel. Each course was well balanced and perfectly executed, with the pace of the menu just perfect, leaving you wanting more right up until dessert. Carrot and beetroot dishes were earthy and exciting, and truly celebrated the produce at the heart of them. The beef brisket dish was a stand out course for me, rich, deep and full of flavour yet balanced with the mushrooms. We felt that the wine flight offered a good balance of familiar and more adventurous/challenging wines. (We each gave 5/6 of the wines a thumbs up - not the same 5 though.... a solid reminder that personal preference is subjective!) The sommelier gave us a good amount of information and the chance to ask questions without being overbearing. The whole experience including the food, wine, service and atmosphere was right up our street - we hope to be back before too long. NB - I note some previous comments re drinks options in the bar - we found that when we asked there was a greater selection than appears on the bar menu and staff were all to happy to discuss the options with us.

Great descriptions of each course And wine waitress did very well, even though she had only been there for 2 weeks(my brother and I are both WSET level 3), so a stern test Main complaints : wanted a Sherry in the lounge but the waitress couldn’t provide a list, so l had a very expensive and mediocre cocktail. Got the wine list in the restaurant, including Sherry, so got my oloroso at last. But my wife wanted a gin and tonic so had to go back to the bar to get their list. Unprofessional, poor training and lack of coordination between bar and restaurant Other than that, a great evening.

4 of us visited Peels in anticipation of a Michelin standard experience. Our first visit and sadly, will be our last. I’m not given to writing reviews on this forum but I felt this time I would make an exception. This restaurant fell way below standard I’m afraid. There were some highlights , the ‘amuse bouch’ were lovely as was the carrot mousse. The beetroot dish ( frankly supermarket level) , the fatty grey slice of flavourless beef , the well below average cod with sliced grapes and the frankly almost rubbery tasteless monkfish were so far below Michelin standard it was so disappointing. The apple tart was not that flavoursome (although pretty)and the lukewarm coffee was just poor. The wine pairings were not at all to our taste sadly. Demonstrated by wine left in all our glasses. My side plate had a huge chip in that caught the skin. ( it was pointed out). The noise level in the dining room was so loud as to give a headache. The atmosphere just wasn’t there. It should be said that the staff were charming. We would not return to Peels but may try Smoke in the future.

It was the first Dinner under the then new Chef of Peel’s Darren Meacham & what a debut ! The menu comprised of 7 dishes everyone of them using Spring produce either from the garden or locally sourced and everyone of them out of the top drawer . Highlights were wild garlic soup with pink fir potatoes and garden herbs , Wye valley asparagus , Duck pieces , Berkswell sauce . Got this to have as a couple with one of our parents as a treat. Excellent value, really well put together and very easy to pull together on the night. The snack and bread were fantastic. The standout for us was the crab starter but only just as everything was wonderful. It is really nice this is done per person as alot are for two. We loved everything

Wonderful experience. Very lucky to have a high-end restaurant in Solihull. The staff were extremely welcoming and very knowledgable about the food especially the waiter who explained the wines if you choose wine pairing. Beautiful Manor House and beautiful food.

We ate an afternoon tea in the Summer House which was excellent. In terms of SD it was not great, especially for a venue so close to Solihull. On the positive, sanitiser was provided and tables well distanced. However, no colleagues were seen wearing face masks and service took place within two metres. Tables were served to and cleared when they could have been left once guests left. I think afternoon teas could be served on a trolley and customers allowed to serve themselves. This may be a different way of serving but surely safety comes first.

First of all, just in case anyone from Peels reads this... Thank you so much for an awesome evening!I love my food and during lockdown rather than going for a basic curry had a couple of the peels on wheels takeaways which really brightened my day. When the restaurant reopened i couldn't wait to try the meals from the masters. On entry we were promptly seated and drinks orders taken. The garden cocktail was light and refreshing. My wife and I opted for the 6 course taster menu as we wanted to experience the full range of flavours. I also opted for the wine course as my wife was driving.I will strongly recommend the wine course as the breadth of flavours you will try work perfectly with different dishes on offer. Our sommelier was very knowledgeable and I enjoyed a discussion on the merits and variations of the wines. It should be noted that due to covid they haven't been able to source all of their usual wines, however the pairings were very good! The food was divine. I would definitely recommend the turbot over the mutton as the flavor profile of the turbot just exploded in your mouth whereas the mutton was slightly grisly. I enjoyed the additional cheese on toast course, however it could really have done with a oakey port to refresh it.The deserts were heavenly, and the two desert wines worked really well to compliment the dishes. If you just think of the food and drink it would be quite expensive. However my wife and i were effectively entertained in a beautiful setting for close to four hours and pampered with beautiful presentation, flavours and an amazing atmosphere during this time (there was even a bunny outside :-)) . We cannot wait to go back!

A family outing so soon after the restaurants opened to show our support for the catering industry didn't disappoint. The service was very good, the staff professional and friendly. Best of all the other guests, either stopping over at Hampton Manor or like us out for the night were like us pleased to be there. Okay, the food is spartan and probably too much wine with the six courses...but lesson learned and yes I love the matching of tastes, wine and food. Looking forward to being back again

We had considered whether to delay our visit to Peel’s to allow them time to settle back in after the Covid 19 closure and after our recent Friday evening experience we all wished that we had! My wife and I arrived to a friendly welcome and opted to sit in the garden to await the arrival of our friends and to have a quick aperitif before the 8.00 pm sitting. We ordered a G&T and a V&T and after a few minutes decided that it was a bit windy to sit out and transferred to the lounge. Our friends arrived and we had now been waiting over 20 minutes for our drinks. A further 10 minutes went by before we had to ask where the drinks were and to order for our friends. When they eventually turned up we had a leisurely drink but it was now 8.45 pm and no one had approached us regarding our table booking so I enquired and the maitre’d eventually showed us to a long table with another party of four sat at the opposite end. So far we were starting to regret booking so soon after lockdown. The menu offerings were either a 4 course or 7 course tasting selection with the option of wine pairings on each. We decided on the 4 course menu For £80 per head and described each course as:1. Tomato2. Potato3. Choice of Lamb or Turbot4. Strawberries and creamWe could also have added Cheese on toast at £10 or Cheese plate at £20 supplement!Prior to the meal commencing we were given bread which was obviously home made but was badly burnt at the one end giving off a distinctly charred flavour to all of the crust. The tomato course arrived - heritage tomato and herbs with an intense and delicious tomato Consommé - nicely served and presented and the typical size of a fine dining restaurant portion. The next course (Potato) was really disappointing - it was literally one new potato in a dish with an “XO “ sauce! Our opinion (and that of others we spoke to) was that this was a bit of a p*ss take and did not by any stretch of the imagination constitute “a course“ - it certainly didn’t appear to have taken much skill from the chef. Three of us opted for the lamb (me included) and one chose the turbot. The turbot was adjudged to be excellent as was the quality of the lamb which was served as 2 noisettes each with a lovely lamb sauce. However, the chef should not have served 2 normal sized portions and one half size! It was obvious that they had run short on the lamb and had simply cut one noisette in half so that I ended up with a much smaller portion than the others. Also, to just serve it with half a small roasted onion with crispy bits on top was really disappointing - despite the negatives I would reiterate that the lamb was cooked beautifully. The dessert of Strawberries and cream with rhubarb sticks was nice if a little unremarkable and again not much skill required from the chef. We decided against the cheese on toast and cheese plate options and requested the bill which came in at a touch over £500 for four. Here too lay a small irritation with the champagne charged as £90 instead of the quoted £68 - this was immediately adjusted when we pointed it out but taken together with all of my other observations and comments we all concluded that such a fine establishment had seriously let itself down on both service and food and came nowhere near the standards of the likes of Adam’s and Simpson’s and other local quality restaurants. It might be argued that our disappointment should have been discussed with the management but we deliberately decided not to raise so many issues at the time as it could have created a difficult atmosphere which we were keen to avoid. I hope that my comments will be viewed as objective, constructive and meant with the best of intentions following the difficulties so soon after the Covid lockdown.

Peels has been producing weekly Peels on Wheels cook at home boxes, with pre-prepared meal components to heat and assemble. Usually these are delivery only but recently opened up to collection from Hampton Manor’s reception too. We booked a collection for 4 people as part of my birthday celebrations. Communication with the Peels team was very good and very friendly when I was arranging the collection and full order including paired wines. Collection went smoothly and was contactless in line with COVID requirements. Each of our 2 meal kits (as my best friend also had one, and we had a virtual cook along and dinner party) was very well packaged with recyclable materials wherever possible. We were given instructions and also a video to watch in advance to ensure we knew what we were doing. Each course was delicious and very easy to prepare and plate up. It had also been noted that it was my birthday and my won box included cookies and cookie dough to bake at home (OMG they were delicious!!) and a birthday card from the POW team, which was a lovely touch. We are looking forward to a meal in the restaurant once it opens again.

To go to peels isn’t a cheap night out, but, it’s not stupidly expensive either! what it most definitely delivers is a complete treat, somewhere beautiful to go to mark a special occasion or just to enjoy a lovely evening of fine dining and it always hits the mark! We Went on Friday night (7th March 2020) with another couple and we all love the decadence of the venue and the fact you go into the lounge/parlour for drinks before dinner, it just feels relaxed and sophisticated! The food and service is always very good, never rushed and we never come away hungry (quite the opposite, but in a good way)It’s a lovely, special, treat of a place to go for dinner and definitely a gorgeous and almost an untold beautiful secret Venue.it certainly rates with some of the best fine dining restaurants in my world

This isn’t just food it’s an experience to be savoured from start to finish. From the service to the food, everything was outstanding. We had the 7 course tasting menu and it was more like 11 courses with the chefs gifts that arrived in between. We were greeted upon arrival and shown to the parlour, where we relaxed by the fire and were offered an amusing take on the drinks menu with a cluedo theme. We both enjoyed a lovely cocktail when we were given some gifts from the chef which were delicious and got us excited for what was to come. We were escorted to the dining room, which was low lit and has a nice calming atmosphere. It wasn’t fussy, it didn’t have expectation making it the kind of place that would be accessible to all without be overwhelmed by with fine dining etiquette. The servers were attentive and slick, they explained each dish, added a little theatrical flair to the dishes and left you to enjoy. There was no rush, we were able to enjoy each dish in our own time which you’ll want to savour every flavour on offer. The food was phenomenal, perfectly balanced, locally sourced, some even direct from the kitchen garden. Everything was flavourful and delicious and there were no scary or overwhelming Concoctions being served here. It amazing what these talented chefs can do with flavours and textures. It’s lovely to see that the menu was seasonal, leaving me want to come back for more. I would return to this restaurant in a heartbeat and it’s perfect for a special occasion. I also have a number of intolerances and they were more than happy to cater for them. Nothing was too much trouble. After finishing our dinner we were offered a cheese course but sadly our bellies were full and satisfied. Maybe an excuse to visit again not that we need one. We retired to the bar, again another open fire and more chef’s treats whilst we relaxed until we were ready to leave. My one and only criticism would be regarding the benched seating in the restaurant. This was extremely uncomfortable In terms of the low height to table ratio and the angle of the seating didn’t aid digestion when eating 7 courses due to the seating position, as you were a little hunched forward. I think the normal chaired seating would have been better, will have to try that out next time.

We have done this before and loved it and expectations were high, well they didn’t disappoint. We had an amazing time!Chicken Liver Parfait for starters, lamb for main and the most amazing pear tarte tatin I’ve ever had. Lots of lovely touches like the warm indivual bread rolls, the petit fours and the birthday plate at the end. It’s not cheap by any means but you get what you pay for and I’d go back in a heart beat I loved it! To top it off Monty (masterchef the professionals contestant) came to say hello. Brilliant night well done Peels and thank you Scott for the great service.

A restaurant within a hotel means the AA are always more generous with their accolades and so it is here. However the food and service is good and the menu choice is quite varied. Most of the food we were served was enjoyable. The general service was formal and efficient except the Sommelier who added some extra nice touches to our evening. The wine list is quite inspired in its presentation and layout. Focusing on the characteristics of the wine rather than just naming them. My only criticism being the lack of mid to upmarket wines on offer as well as a few notable gaps. Overall we had a very good evening in this atmospheric and classy restaurant. Definitely one we would return too.

Blaming a " computer glitch" and saying they had a private party booking just sounded pathetic, and a similarly pathetic claim to have " tried to call" in December also left me speechless... so that's one seriously ruined birthday treat now. We stayed overnight and had the seven course menu with wine pairings. The evening started well with a selection of really nice pre dinner snacks in the Parlour to accompany our aperitif. The meal in the Peel’s Restaurant was sophisticated in both the courses served, the quality of service, and the balance of the wine pairings provided. The standout courses for us were the langoustine and carrot dish, and the Wagyu beef tartare. The diversity of principal ingredient for each dish made the meal enjoyable as well as interesting. We very much enjoyed our meal at the Peel’s restaurant.
