Mckees Brasserie in Solihull

Friday 27th September 2024. My husband’s cousin Roger and his wife Janine came to visit us in Birmingham and go to lunch. We went to ‘McKee’s Brassiere’ at Haig’s Hotel in Balsall Common. We arrived for 1.00 pm and were shown to a nice table for four in the restaurant by Jeanette. The restaurant itself is light, bright and airy with a lovely dining area, where we were seated on this bright sunny afternoon. The place was lovely and the staff were bright and welcoming especially Coleby who waited on us and was very professional in everything she did for us. We had the three course set lunch menu, which was very good value. We had an amuse bouche of tomato soup served with home-made bread, which was really warming and nice, a good beginning for our lovely meal. We had starters; My husband had haddock and trout pate served with Melba toast and butter. Roger had the cheese tart served with chutney. Janine had the watermelon, feta, pomegranate and pecan nut salad, which she said was delicious. I had the chicken liver pate with cranberry apple chutney and served with Melba toast, which was really delicious. The starters were just the perfect size to get the palate started. For our main courses: Janine and My husband had the Chicken Ballotine, chicken breast filled with chives, leeks and pancetta. Served with coarse grain mustard sauce and a stuffed cabbage parcel filled with potato which was served with a dish of vegetables (carrots, broccoli, red cabbage and roast potatoes), which he both said was delicious. The chicken just melted in the mouth. Roger and I had the Vegetable Wellington filled with camembert, beetroot and spinach with a sweet potato and mushroom sauce, which was served with a dish of vegetables (carrots, broccoli, red cabbage and roast potatoes, which we both thought was delicious. The dishes arrived together and were very hot and very well presented. We washed all this lovely food down with sparkling spring water for Roger and Janine. A pint of ‘Doombar’ bitter for my husband and a nice large glass of rose wine for me. We all had desserts: My husband had the apple crumble with creamy custard. Roger had the lemon posset with berries, which he said was delicious. Janine and I had the Chocolate Marquise with cappuccino ice cream, which was really delicious and it was lovely and light and the perfect finish to our meals. We had tea and coffees afterwards; My husband had a pot of tea. Roger had black coffee. Janine and I had a de-caffeinated coffee with milk, these came with a selection of petite fours, which were a nice finish to our lovely meal. Afterwards we all felt well fed and content.

Excellent food,had the lamb melted in your mouth, good portion size,loved the homemade biscuits,a lovely touch. Waiting staff 10/10.

Spending a few days revisiting the area with my sister and decided to give McKees a try. What a great find, 3 course meal (with complimenrtary extras) was excellent value and delicious, good wine and professional , unassuming service from Dimos. They have some very attractive special foodie dates planned, so much so that I am thinking of coming up again to attend one or two. Highly recommended.

Wonderful food and great service by Ellianne, our waitress. 3 roasts to choose from. Desserts were delicious. Highly recommend. 5 star experience!

Lovely food and good old fashion service.

Fantastic, flavoursome three courses. Three excellent ladies serving. Georgia advised she was very new, but she had a great knack of customer service. High praise to the kitchen staff for such wonderful food. It was only a few hundred metres away from my friend's front door, too. Thoroughly recommended!!

Saturday 15th June 2024, In the evening my husband and I went out for my birthday celebration dinner to ‘McKee’s Brassiere’ at Haig’s Hotel in Balsall Common. We had heard good reviews about this brassiere, so we decided to see for ourselves. We arrived for 7.30 pm and were shown to a nice table for two in the restaurant by Scarlet. The restaurant itself is light, bright and airy with a lovely dining area, where we were seated on this bright sunny evening. The place was lovely and the staff were bright and welcoming especially Scarlet who waited on us and was very professional in everything she did for us. We had the three course set dinner menu, which was very good value. We had an amuse bouche of fresh fruits (pineapple, pomegranate, melon and mango), which was really refreshing and cleansed the palate to begin our lovely meal. We had starters; My husband had leek and potato soup with croutons and served with brown bread and butter. I had the Greek Mezzes of stuffed vine leaves, taramalsata, hummus, spicy savoury Greek cake accompanied by feta cheese and salad, which was really delicious. The starters were just the perfect size to get the palate started. For our main course: my husband had rump of lamb served with pomme Dauphinoise potatoes, cauliflower cheese and a rosemary and red currant jelly, which he said was very tasty. The lamb just melted in the mouth. I had the Greek moussaka served with Greek roasted vegetables and sautéed potatoes, which was really delicious, the best moussake I have eaten in a long time. The dishes arrived together and were very hot and very well presented. We washed all this lovely food down with a nice chilled bottle of Californian rose Zinfandel wine. We both had desserts: my husband had strawberry ‘Eton’ mess, which he said was delicious. I had the Mojito cheesecake served with Chantilly cream, which was lovely and light and the perfect finish to my meal. We had coffees afterwards; my husband had a black coffee and I had coffee with cream, these came with a selection of petite fours, which were a nice finish to our lovely meal. Afterwards we both felt well fed and content. This was are first visit here and we shall return.

Always have a fantastic night out when we go to mckeese The food is always 100% the staff are so accommodating and the prices for what you get is fantastic and they theme nights are always great I would recommend this place for a Meal Afternoon tea is always a good one and also just going to the restaurant is great

What a find! A 6 course meal with prosseco for £20.50!! Lovely food. Canapés to start, soup, starter, main course, dessert and petit fours. Fantastic service. The only criticism was the singer! Too loud and very much out of tune. Will come again but will make sure there is no live singer!

A very friendly family run hotel and restaurant. Have followed McKees from Studley to Balsall Common via Solihull and have always been more than satisfied with my visits. Although the menu is set for three months there is always another menu sheet offering changing additions. The food served is reliable without being boring, just enough spirit of adventure. This is particularly true of their themed evenings which are extremely good value for money. Long may Haig's continue to serve me and the community of Balsall Common and beyond.

The food was good but we had to wait an eternity for each course! Lunch took nearly 3 hours!!!!!

Well served and presented. A different selection of food from the norm for me . Greatly enjoyed . Attention to detail . Little starter not ordered so a lovely surprise . And coffee etc included . Wow !

We were about 20 minutes early for our booking so decided to have a drink in the lounge before eating. It was a good decision and a relaxing start to lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed everything, so 5 stars!

A nice place for lunch or dinner. Excellently prepared and presented food. We all had the set winter menu with sensible portions. We all enjoyed our choices. Where can you get a 3 course meal for £20. With a apertiser of soup and bread with oil and balsamic dips, petite fours with coffee all included in the set menu price. Good spacing between tables and prompt unrushed waiting. Will definitely go again.

Service rather slow no doubt due to being rather busy.

As always, a very pleasant Sunday lunch experience, from the warm welcome, comfortable and cosy surroundings, wide menu choice, to the beautifully served 3 course meal. Some may find the portions smaller than in other places but value for money is a major plus.

Great food &, service but £24 for a bottle of house wine &, only 12per cent strength a bit over the top Certainly puts me off returning.

Absolutely delighted to find this hidden gem. The hotel, bar and restaurant are impeccably clean, staff are friendly, welcoming and very attentive. The one meal I ate there surpassed my expectations, the mini terrine of soup (which was complimentary) was to die for. My lamb was cooked to perfection and the meal on the whole was 5* and very reasonably priced. I can't wait to go again.

It is always a delight to eat at Mckees. Staff are always friendly and attentive and food is always fresh and cooked well and presented beautifully. We had the 3 course summer menu which is excellent value with the little extras. I would highly recommend this brasserie.

. Reviewing 5 recent visits : Valentines`s Day meal , St George`s Day meal , Afternoon Tea , Breakfast . Had Lunch today . McKee`s Brasserie is our favourite place to eat . The Menus are nicely thought out , with constant variations & special event menus . We have been so impressed with the Staff , high levels of customer service , quality / prices of the dishes along with the charming surroundings & ambience . On arriving , we have always received a polite , cheerful greeting from the Staff , who swiftly showed us to our table. The decor & layout are pleasant - we feel like we are on holiday when we visit McKee`s. The food is gorgeous , nicely cooked & presented , with speedy service by polite , hard working Staff . Today we took our Friends from Derbyshire for lunch at McKee`s , our Friends eat at the Taphouse , Smisby , which is excellent , so we were eager to hear what they thought of McKee`s. They were both delighted at the attentiveness of Staff , & at the lovely food they ate here today . Extra touches at McKee`s make all the difference : We decided upon 3 courses ( £20.20 ) , but ended up receiving some surprise extras ! before our starters arrived , we were served breads , Balsamic vinegar & Olive oil , then mini fruit tureens . After our delicious mains & desserts , we ordered coffees / teas & received some appealing mini shortbreads / cakes which tasted home made , just the right amount . Our Friends were super impressed by this . All the food was absolutely gorgeous & the service was so attentive - the Staff intuitively know to ask when more dishes / drinks are needed. My Mate & I were thrilled that we could have zero alcohol Guinness as we were both driving - a nice drink , much more like proper beer than other zero alcohol beers. Meeting our old Friends at McKees really made our week & was the basis for a great day out . Some weeks ago when we had a delicious Breakfast at McKee`s , we were as impressed as ever , & were able to swap items from the menu according to our preferences. Thank you so much to everyone at McKee`s , for such a great service - polite , efficient Staff , glorious food , delightful venue ( the garden is lovely , too ! ) , obviously a popular venue , the ambience is wonderful . The prices are so reasonable , considering all of the things mentioned . All of these features are often lacking in many establishments so McKee`s stands head & shoulders above.

What an incredibly well kept secret this lovely restaurant is. Have just enjoyed one of the very best Sunday lunches ever, the service and food were impeccable and it's excellent value for money too. Cannot recommend highly enough, thank you everyone!

My wife and I went for dinner on Friday night, there were only 6 other people there eating, and we were forgotten about..... and had to get the waitress to take our order, she said "sorry she had forgotten we were here" . The food was hot and wholesome and plenty of it . It was also extremely reasonably priced. If you want plenty of food at a reasonable price its great place to go , but lacks a" buzz" .

Very good all round and excellent value for money. Most Sunday lunch diners were 65+ according to our estimations! So good for us!

Booked 4 days before date required, no problem. Sunday lunch was excellent, Well cooked and very tasty. Service as usual was exceptional considering young age of staff.

Having visited on numerous occasions for different events the food has been excellent and the staff have always been very courteous and professional. I would definitely recommend them to family and friends and I’m sure that anyone going to Haigs would have an enjoyable time.

For a low price hotel, the place was great. Nice rooms, friendly staff, great place to stay on a budget.

Six of us went for Sunday lunch and as always Jane and the team were attentive without being intrusive. The food was outstanding and the whole experience thoroughly enjoyable.

As always the standard of food and service was excellent it’s always a pleasure to eat here . I’d booked for four of us and all of us enjoyed ourselves.

Dated decor miniscule portions, not enough for a working adult.

All of our party opted for the 3 course set meal and were delighted with the dishes served. The rating of Very Good for the food rather than Excellent reflects two issues. Firstly, the provision of a single platter of bread and oil/vinegar dips for a table is not appropriate. Each person can only dip one part of their bread because it would not be hygienic to dip bread that had been partly eaten; the oil/vinegar drips over the table when doing this with a central platter, and no plates were provided to put the bread on causing further drips on the table. If McKee's intend to continue with this practice, plates should be provided along with butter as an alternative. Secondly, the coffee served was not hot. These issues spoil what would otherwise be an exceptional meal.

As always an outstanding Sunday lunch served by friendly and attentive staff.

We go to Mckee’s Brasserie a lot. It never fails to disappoint. The food is excellent with a good choice, always piping hot. The staff very friendly and attentive. The price is really good value. What more could you want.

Menu was a little limited, only to be expected as we were "late Sunday diners" and obviously the favorite dishes had been used up. However the standard was still very good.

As usual the food at McKee's was very good and excellent value apart from the bread and dips at the start of the meal. The bread was rather dry and the communal dipping of bread into the bowls really isn't appropriate in this Covid era. In fact, it is a practical problem at any time which usually results in mess across the table. Would it be possible for people to be given the option of bread and butter instead? We had to move from the first table that we were allocated as it was unstable and rocking. This is not the first time that we have experienced that table - I suggest disposing of it or, at least, repairing it!

No one on reception, just a chalk board with an arrow, All staff very young , however extremely pleasant and professional , food was lovely and well worth the set menu price , the reason for low star is decor .I last visited in 2000 and the brasserie is in very much need for a refit

The food generally was up to it's usual high standard. The only disappointment was the bread and dips provided at the start of the meal. One plate to be shared amongst 6 people is firstly a practical challenge and secondly a concern in these Covid times. We all agreed that we would prefer to have bread and butter rather than the dips. The service was excellent - William took some rather unusual requests from one of our number in his stride and did a great job.

Since being allowed to serve food outside from 12th April we have visited twice, and on both occasions our food and services was just excellent. Jayne and Jessica are just so nice and attentive, and with Simon using his cooking skills in the kitchen the Luncheon experience was just so enjoyable (the sun was shining also!!) Well done to all look forward to seeing you again very soon!!

Ordered Christmas lunch for 2 people. Really disappointed. Starter and sweet not too bad but the dinner was awful very, very small portions, definitely NOT a Christmas dinner! Sorry never again

The food here is absolutely beautiful and the menu is always changing, so its a nice surprise. You really can't grumble as its such good value. We've been to a couple of their event nights which are slightly more expensive but not much and again food is fantastic. On top of that the staff are always exceptionally pleasant. Its now my favourite place for dining out. Even during Covid they've offered a takeaway service which again is really good value.

Look no further if you want a superb meal during lockdown, as they are offering an excellent take-away meals service. All the food is supplied in handy containers with the correct heating and serving recommendations. Our Sunday lunch yesterday was excellent value at £10 for two courses. There was even a shortbread biscuit for our coffee. Something Marks and Spencer’s have stopped doing in their meanness. It was easy to order by telephone and collection was from the front door.

A brilliant evening, service was excellent. Staff were friendly and efficient. We were treated to a complimentary bowl of tomato soup, small but very nice. Our order of a hot meal came on hot plates, in my view a must. Social distancing and mask use was adhered to by all that were there. On each table was sanitising hand gel. The restaurant was clean and tidy. Could not fault our evening.

My mother has been ordering the Sunday take out since March.She absolutely loves it!Virtually every menu choice has been sampled.....and all have been excellent!!Well done to all concerned and keep up the good work !!Living two hours away from my mum it is so reassuring to know that she is in receipt of such outstanding meals each weekend.

We have been going to to Mckees brasserie for at least 10 years plus and on each occasion during different times of the year we have found that the variety of food created is exceptional. Great value and served with a genuine smile.

We ate here on Monday 3 courses and coffee excellent value at £16. But for October they are giving 25%off !!!!A lovely meal , excellent service , it was quiet but this suited us , we felt very safe.It was so good we have booked afternoon tea for next week !!!!This is a family run business , let’s support them to keep going.

we had an excellent meal at McKees on Monday , it was very quiet but this suit us . The food as usual was excellent , the brie tart was Delicious! We believe the fixed price menu is great value for money BUT they are now offering 25% off during October. We have already made further bookings for dinner and afternoon tea .
