We ate here on a Sunday night but it was very quiet. I ordered duck with pineapple and ginger as on the menu and my husband had hot and sour soup and a steak dish. The soup was OK nothing special. My main came as duck with ginger and spring onions for some reason. I did point this out but I didn't want to wait longer for them to change the order. It was reasonable enough but heavy on the onions and the duck wasn't the most tender. OK but overall nothing special food wise, the staff though were friendly and apologetic at the order mix-up.

We have been here before for lunch and there is a set menu costing £5.50 per head for two courses. You can upgrade the starter by an additional £1 per head and there are some other dishes on the menu which cost just a little bit more. Besides chinese dishes, there are European style items on the menu. I would imagine that the evening meals would be more developed and varied than the lunch offering, but I have given this review four stars for the quality and value available at lunch. The drink prices are typical for this area and the overall bill will be not much more than £10 per head including all you need for lunch. In common with many Chinese Restaurants, I feel they could ensure that the temperature is raised in the dining area, as it felt a little cold.

We usually eat at a different Chinese when I'm down in Dumfries. Years since I've eaten in Pearl Palace, so happy to go along. My Shredded Beef in Special sauce was excellent. My sister however was served chicken instead of Beef in her Salt and pepper dish plus no extra chillies she'd asked for. No problem dish was changed but still no extra heat. Our complaint really was paying 70p for tap water. Apparently though this is quite allowable.Anyway the service was good, my family knowing some of the staff from years ago. They also fried 3 smaller Spring Rolls for starters when we'd ordered 2 to share between three of us.All in all a good meal. Would return and recommend.

Always been my favourite Chinese to go to but I’ve always walked in and ordered, but lately the last few weeks I’ve had to phone my order in and every time the phone is ignored or busy. My partner tested it and went in when I phoned and they simply stood talking and ignored it and another time he said it appeared the lady was on the phone talking to a friend laughing and joking the whole 25 minutes he was in. I’m so disappointed because I always used this restaurant/takeaway for food for my break at work. It’s really put me off the ignorance they had.

I phoned to make an order for delivery an Asian woman answered the phone, I told her I wanted salt and chili crispy chicken and chow main. because of the massive language barrier I struggled too understand her, she explained that my order isn’t garanted to crispy and because of her accent I didn’t understand what she’s said so I asked her to repeat it, so I said that was fine she then repeated the order back to me and from what I could understand it sounded correct. When my food came I got chips instead of chicken so I phoned back to tell them very polity, and had a horrible nasty man tell me it was My fault not their fault I didn’t understand what she was saying and their was nothing they could do because I didn’t correct them and that apparently in her 22 years of working their this has never happened. After arguing for 10 minutes that I had said chicken and my parter heard me say chicken he said he would bring my chicken and take the chips and the £3.20 extra.

Marked this as average as my husband and i will often order takeaway from here which is very good but had a disappointing experience in resteraunt. Went with colleagues for lunch and as im on mayernity leave i had my baby in tow in a pram. As soon as i entered i was told prams arent allowed due to health and safety. I tried to explain i was with the large group but the waitress didnt seem to understand much english and went to get the manager. I asked if there was a high chair but there wasnt and they explained they had got rid of it!! I nearly had to embarassingly about turn and leave but reluctantly they let us in with the pram eventually but we should never have been put through such hassle and made to feel so uncomfortable. The lunch menu which is 3 courses for £5 is excellent value for what it is and i had been meaning to go with my husband one day when he is off but as they are so unfriendly towards babys we will need to go elsewhere. Really disappointed with the pearl palace attititude and think they need to invest on a few high chairs if they insist on no prams in the resteraunt or relax this rule. I eat out alot with our baby and have never been told no prams before!! Never felt so uncomfortable that i think we will need to look for a new chinese after to get our takeaway from if thats how they treat long standing customers.

Staff friendly and cheerful. We visited last year too (we come from Glasgow) and enjoyed it then and both times the restaurant has been busy so clearly a local favourite. I have used this takeaway occasionally for many years and have normally been delighted with the food, unfortunately I will not be back after my most recent experience. I called in for a carry out for two one evening and ordered Chicken and cashew nut for my wife and a half Crispy Aromatic Duck for myself. I have to admit that the actual Duck was very nice however they forgot to put any pancakes in the bag and since I live about 13 miles from the restaurant my only option was to wrap the duck in some day old fajitas that were lying about. The chicken and cashew nut on the other hand was the most bland and tasteless concoction that I have ever tried and most of it went in the bin. Sorry folks but I won't be back and will stick to the Pine and Bamboo which to be quite honest is now in a different class.

We had one meal here when visiting dumfries. It was recommended by our hotel reception. It was quite busy but had room despite it being Friday night. Located at one end of the main street and easy to find. Decor looked a bit tatty with the outside a bit battered. Doubt we would have gone in without the recommendation. Inside looked like there had been a flood with water stains on the ceiling, stained wallpaper etc. At best there was a sort of faded grandure about the decor. Do not go down the uneven stairs to the toilets which were quite something. We were wondering what we had let our selves in for but the staff were very friendly and the service quite good considering it was busy. Food came promptly and was what you would expect anywhere. Fairly inexpensive overall. Perhaps recommended if you are not too choosy or want a look at the place.Suitable for anyone.

I just don't get the reviews which enthuse about this place. I first stepped into this establishment almost 30 years ago. In that time I think the only thing which has changed are the staff (you'll be lucky to see the same staff member in any subsequent visit) and the massive fish tank which happily, along with the massive fish, is no longer in place. The wallpaper remains old, dark and tired, the lighting is a hindrance to safe eating - and the state of the toilets has been well documented elsewhere. The food is not really disappointing. It is just exactly what you expect from a standard British style Chinese restaurant. Nothing of any surprise, lacking any creative or original imagination, and nothing to stimulate or to titillate. For those who have hailed the 'freshly prepared' food, you may be correct - but my partner and I ordered two main meals only - and both arrived literally within minutes of the order being placed. Freshly re-heated I suspect.Positives? The staff were friendly and helpful, and the place was shiny. No doubt this was due to the constant polishing activity by the staff when they weren't taking orders. No idea what they were doing with the sellotape though. It was constantly in noisy, rendering action behind the bar!

Thought we would give the Pearl Palace another chance but although the three course lunch was cheap, the food was not great. The chicken and sweet corn soup was tasteless and lacked chicken, the sweet and sour chicken was all batter and whatever was inside was chopped and shaped so called "chicken" which had an awful texture. It certainly did not resemble chicken to me. The rice was OK hot but a small portion As for the dessert the tinned "fruit salad" was fizzy and ready for making wine with.Come on Dumfries get your act together you can do better than this. I would rather spend an extra couple of pounds to get something edible and at least cooked with some care.Too many restaurants locally are resting on past laurels and chucking out food that has no professionality to it.Come into the 21st century, people expect an awful lot better nowadays and I am afraid others around are not much better.Where can we get a decent chinese meal locally???

We went into the restaurant not long after 10pm when visiting for ice hockey. We were initially told that they were not taking seated bookings, only takeaway. We explained the lateness of our arrival and agreed to be quick and so the manageress came and agreed to seat us.As for the food I can only speak for my own Chicken Curry with Fried Rice. It was easily one of the best Chicken Curries I have ever had and it came nice and quickly.Once again would like to thank the staff for accommodating us.

Shopper advised my business associate and I to try this restaurant for lunch. We were not disappointed. Service was ultra fast and this suited us as we were in a hurry. Menu offered very traditional Fahrenheit wIth nothing out of the ordinary however the food for each course was incredibly tasty when it arrived. The waitress was friendly and helpful. Brilliant value for money and will definitely visit again.

This restaurant is the best value place to eat in Dumfries. Whenever I'm out shopping, I usually head for here as the food is consistently excellent, and for a 3 course lunch for under £5.00 you can't beat the value! Superb Christmas Lunches too!!

I have visited the Pearl Palace several times this year all ways for the three course dinner time menue . £4.70 for three courses absolutely fantastic value. Portions are adequate but not huge and the food I have eaten was impossible to fault. The sweet and sour chicken is particularly good and the various soups excellent . Service is brisk and the staff polite and friendly they also serve a very good pint of lager. If you are looking for a relaxing lunch in Dumfries you will not find better value.

Have been here many times and have never had a bad meal, on this occasion i had 3 course lunch for under five pounds, i had fruit juice, chicken chow mein and gateau with cream but theres a lot more exciting things on lunch menu. Food was great, service was possibly too fast and the decor is nice. Only fault is the music can get pretty depressing

Me an the BF visited on a Friday night, this was our first visit. We chose the set dinner for 2, which was priced at £23.00. The food was absolutely delicious and plentiful. This establishment also catered for take away, and there was lots of take away activity going on, always a good sign. The waitress service was faultless. All in all a fantastic Chinese find, I will be looking forward to visiting again.

Was in the area for a wee break and decided to eat out Monday 13th October. Not familiar with the area had a scan of place son here, and based on the reviews took a chance on the Pearl Palace.Went in around 20.00hrs and there was a few people in already. The place looked fine and got a table and the menu. Ordered a special fried rice and the wife had the special Chow Mein. I then went down the stairs to use the toilets, and can confirm that this is not the best. The stairs have carpet that is coming off in places, has LOTS of different types of air fresheners on the stairs and in any place they can put one, walls are mouldy and black in places. Once down and going to the toilets I almost banged my head as it has a beam going over ( I am though 6ft 4) once in the Men's Toilet it was more of the same, tiles falling off and mould ...but not dirty as such. They really should spend some money on doing this area upAnyway back up to the table and the food arrived, and looked very nice with prawn crackers round the edge. However I then had a bit of the chicken and I was not that impressed a sit was very watery. I thought perhaps it was just me so tried another bit and that was the same. I then removed the sauce and noticed a red bit on the chicken. I thought it was perhaps stained by the sauce so scrapped the chicken and it was not sauce. AT this point the waitress asked "everything alright?" my replay was no this chicken is not cooked and has red bits on it. here response was that it was the sauce and grabbed my plate and went away through to the kitchen , it was returned after being recooked...I left the chicken !! and then tried the prawns ...and that was rubbery and to me had been overcooked or cooked in a microwave. I never bothered after that. Even the wife's was greasy and she did not eat that ...£27 wasted. I took a gamble on this place after reading other reviews, but perhaps these other reviewers have different tastes to me. I though would not risk eating chicken with red blood spots through it. Maybe the Chef had a night off or something, I do not know but I would avoid this place

If you are in Dumfries and you want a really delicious Chinese lunch but are in a hurry to catch your bus the place that I am about to review is the place for you and that place is the Pearl Palace in Castle Street in Dumfries. I visited this Chinese restaurant today and had a delicious lunch, if you choose to come here for lunch I would recommend prawn cocktail to start, sweet and sour chicken served with fried rice for main course and gateaux and cream for desert, all of which are absolutely delicious and would recommend to anyone plus the main restaurant area is clean, the welcome is warm and the staff are friendly.I would recommend this place

We had wandered round Dumfries for ages before deciding on the Pearl Palace - shock and horror at the state of the toilet area - the stairs leading down to it and the toilets themselves seemed to be full of damp and mould - horrible. The food was not too bad but the curry was over spicey and the chicken with asparagus a bit on the tasteless side. I think the toilet area/stairs needs urgent attention as it really spoils the overall impression

We were due to meet up with friends, one of whom is Chinese, on a Saturday lunchtime and they suggested The Pearl Palace in Dumfries town centre. We thought it should be good if our Chinese friend liked it and indeed, we were not disappointed. What amazed us most of all probably was how cheap it was - an unbelievable £4.70 for a 3-course lunch!! Most of the starters were soup, but that suited us down to the ground on a cold and windy day. Our party enjoyed a range of chicken and mushroom, chicken and sweetcorn and chicken noodle soup. There was quite a wide choice of main courses - I had a delicious beef chop suey and my husband had sweet and sour chicken. We took one fried rice and one portion of chips to share between us. We all chose the chocolate gateau with cream for our dessert and it was, of course, a chocolate gateau bought in from a wholesaler, but at that price, who are we to quibble?! It was lovely anyway. Another good point with The Pearl Palace is that the service is really fast and also, they were very helpful in rearranging seating to suit one of our friends who brought her baby in with his buggy. There aren't many places nowadays where you'll find a 3-course lunch for under a fiver and even the cups of tea we had were only 50p each, so I wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Pearl Palace. It got quite busy while we were there on Saturday, but I think more people need to know about this great offer and I'm sure it would have been standing room only!!

We ordered a takeaway from here lately and i'm not sure why but we decided to try a different chinese from usual. We both had soup to start which was inedible, my partners special soup smelt off. Our mains weren't up to much either the salt and pepper chicken had a strange texture and the curry sauce was lumpy and powdery. I'd advise to try another chinese.

Never felt compelled to write review until now. Tripadvisor is perfect for me finding great restaurants to eat at. After reading the reviews about this restaurant, I took the risk and went to try the place. From the outside and it's decor, I wasn't expecting great things. However, it surprised us. The staff were warm and welcoming. The food was fantastic and the plates were hot which is always a bonus. The choice of dishes on their extensive menu were quite the same as most Chinese restaurants I have been to. But as I said, you could tell the food was prepared fresh and cooked with care. I must be honest, I was not disappointed. Would recommend this restaurant to anybody who loves their chinese food. The food is a different story from it's interior. Oh, and the chairs were very unique and oriental.

Arrived at this restaurant in the afternoon ordered from the main evening menu, the ham was spam and the prawns were boiled without any seasoning, my daughters vegetable fried rice and my prawn and scallop dish were disgusting, The staff served us inbetween eating them selves, no hand washing, and a trip to the toilet that smelled like an open sewer would indicate that hygiene is not a priorirty for this place. Will never return.

We called in because the entrance was wheelchair friendly. I checked with the staff and yes, they do have a wheelchair accessible toilet, so we took a table. As some of the other reviews have highlighted, the staff are lovely, helpful and made sure that we were happy. Its been a long time since I have been a Chinese restaurant that had a feeling of old school about it. Very much a throw back to the seventies this place with its red painted wood, 'carved ivory' junk (boat) and ornate chairs that seem to come from the east. However, scratch below the surface and the cracks soon appeared. The disabled loo was a dumping ground for all manner of things from wine buckets and stands to miscellaneous furniture. The room was in a shocking state with the wallpaper hanging off. It did not fill me with confidence about the quality of the place - such a shame, a wee bit of investment and it would have been such a better experience. So to the food. The starter soups were good. The main courses equally nice and more than enough. The food was presented nicely as well. I will not be rushing back there, but if I fancied a sit in Chinese, then I would give this restaurant consideration.
