Pauls Plaice in Maldon

Their cheese burger chips and onion rings are amazing! wanted something different, and they served up amazing food as always, large portions, staff are lovely great little take away!

I was in this chip shop that I have been to many times before great food, I was gobsmacked when an elderly lady came in for fish the gentleman behind the counter asked if she would like the special, she said yes but only wanted a small portion of chips. In fact she asked for six chips and he still charged her full price of the special unbelievable that's daylight robbery .

First time visiting this fabulous fish and chip shop. Decided to give it a try after reading other good reviews and it certainly didn't disappoint. We both had cod & chips. Generous portions and lovely chunky cod with gorgeous crispy golden batter. The staff were friendly, cheerful and welcoming. Thanks for a 10/10 chippy tea.

Paul’s Plaice have the best fish & chips, beautifully fried, not greasy and generous portions. Oh and the friendliness of the staff goes a long way too!

Been eating here for many years, brilliant food. Good value for money. I must say though, that if you have invited your GF out for dinner and if your girlfriend is a VIP wearing a cocktail dress, she might prefer somewhere with a table. And no, she is no longer my girlfriend, although she really did like the fish and chips, and said, and I quote "No one, has treated me like this before" she said some other things too, but they will have to remain confidential.

Swapped to this place after having used the Friendly Friar for so long and we are NOT at all disappointed! Paul's Plaice does lovely fish, lovely chips and good sized portions. Everything we've had from here is very good and, to top it all, the staff are so friendly. It's really a takeaway but there is seating outside in the courtyard area if you can't wait. Seriously, give them a go. I don't think we'll be trying anywhere else for a long, long time. Very happy.

We stopped for lunchtime fish and chips after reading excellent reviews on Trip Advisor and weren’t disappointed. The shop was clean and the service was swift. We had the daily special (excellent value) and large haddock and chips. Both were cooked to order with lovely light batter. The chips were chunky and perfectly cooked. We sat outside at a table and the staff brought the food out to us along with salt, vinegar and forks. The staff could not have been more helpful! I would very happily recommend this chippy to anyone!

Food is always fresh especially the fish, chips, battered sausages and burgers and always great portions! AAAAA+++++

Have used Paul’s place often. Really accommodating. Excellent enormous meals. Clean throughout and friendly accommodating staff.

Just ordered Paul’s plaice on Uber eats, delivery was quick and the cod bites are absolutely delicious! More like cod pieces than bites and the fish is beautiful. Generous sizing on the chips and gherkins too. Will definitely be ordering again!

I've got to say that the fish and chips my wife and myself had this lunch time was, as usual, the best we have ever tasted. The chips were perfect and not too fatty and the cod was amazing. We are both nearing 80 and have stopped driving so we have to rely on someone collecting it for us otherwise we'd probably have it every week.

Totally hard anaemic chips, portion ridiculously large for one person. Batter on the fish uncooked inside and revolting! Threw the lot in the food recycling bin!

This is very close to my home so I pop in often. Always pleased with the friendly service and good food. As a bonus -masses of car parking.

Pleasant enough but the fish was rank. My wife’s Rockeel was brown and uneatable and my cod was tasteless and full of oil. Never again.

We have been coming here the last month every weekend and i really can’t pass a single negative comment, The chip portions are huge and non greasy( I can’t eat from chip shops as I’m always unwell the following day, not sure why but thinking maybe its the fat the chips are cooked in). I’ve had 5 different meals from here and loved each one . We drive 6 miles away to this chip shop as the two in our village make me feel so unwell. Pies are lovely , onion rings crispy and chips are perfect not greasy and actually made from potatoes .....the staff have it all worked out in there so it runs smoothly especially during this pandemic. so glad we found this place, of to have some lovely fish and chips from there now .

Was really looking forward to this after reading different reviews. What a disappointment! Overpriced and absolute rubbish. Wrapped in a shiny paper that held the grease around the food. Really large portion of chips but they were cold!Won’t be going there again! And only take cash which was off putting considering COVID transmission!

Brilliant food, great variety of choice on the extensive menu, most generous portions of chips ever served and friendly service. Cannot go wrong.

We stopped by here this afternoon after fancying some chips and were recommended to come here by the manager at Mill Beach. The fish and chips were first class. Everything was fresh, hot and wrapped in great paper. Fish very good quality. Chips not greasy at all My husband picked them up and said all staff were really polite and very friendly. He also commented on how very clean and well run the shop was. We live in Coggeshall and will definitely recommend Paul’s and also certainly visit again when we come to Maldon to walk the dogs.

I have had fish & chips from this place on several accasions now & can say it has been the best I have had in the area for a long time.I live approx 10 miles from shop and I am willing to drive to this fish & chip shop rather than use the rip off Tiptree fish & chip shops who charge top money for frozen fish & smaller portions.

I was visiting Maldon with family and we were keen for some fish and chips, but couldn't find any locally. After a quick Google search we came across Paul's Plaice which was one of the best chippy's we've been to. The fish was fresh and perfectly battered, chips were well cooked and staff were very friendly and welcoming. I would highly recommend them to anyone visiting the area and will be returning in the future!

Cannot say enough good things about Pauls Plaice! Fantastic food, generous portions and always service with a smile. Veggie options always available, the pancake rolls are gorgeous. Go in a stranger, come out a friend 😊😊😊😊

This place has a good local reputation and on the odd occassion when we look for a fish and chip takeaway then you will not get much better than this. Freshly cooked products. Friendly staff. Free parking outside. Reasonable pricing.

The fish here was really good but the batter didn't travel well.The bottoms of the fish were stuck to the paper and the top had gone soft.Maybe the use of boxes would be better rather than the paper. The chips were nice and the portion size was very good. We would buy from here again but maybe find somewhere a bit closer to sit and eat.

Love the fish and chips but just wish they’d sort out the soggy bottomed batter! Lovely and crisp on top but soggy on the bottom....sticks to the paper. Puts me off buying...such a shame 😔

We tried most of fish and chips shops in maldon and heybridge but pauls seems to be the best value for money and if you dont eat fish there southern fried chicken is amazing

This is currently the best fish & chip take-away in the Maldon/Heybridge area. We have tried them all and drive past two to buy from this one. Looks like a family run business that cares. Keep the standard up at all times guys

We use this lovely, friendly place quite often and am NEVER disappointed. The food is freshly cooked, the oil is clean and the potions are generous. Great value for money.

As fans of fish and chips, any visit to the UK involves a lunchtime treat.

I stopped off for a bite to eat and had a smashing fishcake, mushy peas and chip and was able to sit at a table inside the shop to eat my food. Lovely friendly staff and service, will definitely be back. :-)

The service here is great and the generous portions are freshly cooked. Its clean and well organised; the price is OK. There is ample free parking. Why only average?

Just paid my first visit to Paul's Plaice after checking Google and TripAdvisor reviews, definitely found a new favourite local chippy! 2 x Medium cod n chips, cod was cooked fresh and was very tasty, chip portions are massive! Staff were very friendly as well. I would have taken a picture of the food, but we couldn't wait to tuck in :-)

Best Fish and Chips in Heybridge Maldon Essex, Verity menu and the chip portion size is great.Always friendly staff, it is used by the locals and people visiting the area.

Paul's plaice, offer good fish n chips at a reasonable price and the portions are always large They also provided a great meal for the residents evening at a very good price. 👍👍👍

My wife and I were spending a few days at heybridge lock. The first evening I visited pauls plaice for our evening meal ( takeaway). Nothing was prepared until you placed your order, well worth the wait though.

Last visited in Sept 2017, tried others but have come back to this one. It is not the cheapest but certainly cant fault the quality.

Arrived at 7.20 on a Friday evening to get takeaway and eventually left at just after 8!! Very busy but food was ok, problem was they missed one item out and did not realise till got home and was not going back again! Would use again and hopefully will be quicker service.

Personal muy amable y alegre, buenos precios, grandes porciones, mi marido dijo que su pescado era muy bueno, me gustó el bateador nuestros chicos en sus salchichas, los propietarios nos dio botellas de agua gratis y había una mesa fuera a sentarnos en comer antes de que nos dirigimos a la siguiente parte de nuestro viaje. Nada que no me gustara. Gracias.

Había oído cosas buenas sobre este lugar, pero tengo que decir que nos decepcionó. Llamé un sábado alrededor de las 6pm para un llevar. Nos pareció que el bateador en el pescado estaba pasada y cuando intentando mover el pescado desde el paquete a la placa que se caían a pedazos. Las patatas estaban frías y para ser honesto no el mejor pescado y patatas fritas para llevar que hemos tenido.

He estado viniendo aquí durante varios años yo he probado otros lugares locales pero no comparar. El pescado es encantador y fresca y las patatas fritas son muy buenas. Tienes que estar muy hambriento o estar preparado para residuos, algunos ya que las porciones son enormes! ... Sólo tengo una porción de patatas fritas para nosotros tres y hay más que suficiente pero más algunas de las raciones mísero, facilitada por otros establecimientos. El personal es amable y servicial como bien

Ordered large cod and chips and battered sausage, plenty of hot thick chips and fish was perfectly cooked, very nice indeed, one of the best in the local area by far
