Paul in Oxford

We were looking for somewhere to grab a coffee and a sandwich/ cake. We ordered 2 x filled baguettes which were rock hard and stale. They had no hot chocolate so I asked for a glass of water - dirty glass and warm water. 2 disinterested girls on the till who clearly did not want to be at work ( 4.45pm) The tables were dirty and the cafe itself needs a really good clean as there are crumbs, food debris , stains on the plug sockets, trays. tables, chairs and floor. Our table wasn't clean. The whole dining experience was poor and we got the impression that the staff were fed up and wanted to go home.

Absolutely disgusting. We decided to go to this cafe because we were attracted by the pastries on display, and guess what? Stuff didn't sell it to us. They said it's just for show and we have to take what they give. The most ordinary pastry, which, in the end, we never received, but instead they began to offer us something that we did not want. Is this a cafe, or did I go to his house and ask him for his own lunch? My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined, 0/10, never come here.

Good drinks, nice cakes rude staff. My sister was waiting for our drinks when she was literally shoved out of the way by a female staff member.

Floor was filthy. Staff unfriendly. Expensive. Toilets filthy and stank out the upstairs area. Will never visit here again.

Best French patisserie I've tasted outside France. The 'gourmandise' was fresh, crispy and delicious. Not too busy mid morning.

The staff here need to be trained on customer service, absolutely appalling, it’s as if they were being forced to work here. They knew we were waiting to be served kept looking at us and ignoring us, when we finally got served we were over charged. She kept saying it’s more expensive to eat in, till I showed her the receipt and she agreed she had made a mistake, no apologies. Went upstairs tables dirty, and the toilets are the worst I’ve seen overflowing sanitary and waste bin, everything needs a deep clean. Avoid

I went casually at Paul in Oxford with some friends and we were really unsatisfied with the food and the staff. The cake was raw inside and the staff was really unfriendly and terse, plus they didn't clean the tables that were really dirty. The food is quite expensive and if you dine in they will charge you lot more. I wouldn't recommend this place at all.

This was not be one of Paul's best. Pastries were okay but coffee was well below good. Atmosphere was fine but not special.

Sulky staff. They had no change in the till so had to pay on card, offered to buy a pastry and pay part cash/ card, but they said no, like it was an unfathomable suggestion. Confusion over eating in or taking away, so the barista poured my coffee into a new cup. Delicious sandwich - just a shame about the staff and their attitude

As ever one of my fave places for breakfast/ lunch. Nice friendly staff and they advised me in my questions about the various pastries! Always a good spot to stop!

visited paul’s oxford today as i own my own business, and i had over 50 online orders to complete and process so i knew it was going to be a long day and needed somewhere cosy, warm and full off coffee! started my day off with a delicious caramel latte - one gentleman was so kind and very well mannered explaining the different drinks options available to me, in the moment i felt like more of a friend as opposed to a customer, and the other gentleman in the store delivered my coffee with some beautiful latte art! there was such a variety of different food options available and elegantly displayed and i was advised on which ones are both customer and staff favourites which was very helpful - i went for the raspberry delice which was delicious!!! from the moment i entered the store i felt very warmly welcomed by the 3 staff members - staff were very presentable and talkative and the overall ambiance of the store was calm, any queues that appeared throughout the day were dealt with swiftly and with the same diligence through each order/customer. will be recommending to family, friends, and my blooming businesses customers!

I love this cafe been coming for ages but they do seem to have slipped a lot today. My favourite moment was watching the announcement of Charles as King, under Carfax tower which is fabulously visible from upstairs. Today, the girl behind the counter had a coat on and moon struck eyes, no words of welcome or asking me what I wanted. I wouldn’t normally complain people in hospitality are hard to find, but I had the most ugly looking flat white I’ve ever had in Oxford. No milk foam just two shots and hot milk.

Has this been taken over by aliens? Scruffy servers, long haired and very casual approach to the job, barista wanted me to accept coffee in a cup with a huge dirty chip on the rim, then planned to pour that coffee into another cup. Sulky unhelpful assistants. Everything needed a good clean, floor dirty, Americano coffee served with cold milk, argued with me about what I’d asked for. £16.50 later, definitely our last visit.

Visited for lunch today. Service offhand. Food acceptable. Premises grubby. Toilets really bad. This eating establishment is in need of a complete revamp.

It's been a couple of days since I visited Paul, I just can't stop thinking about how rude the man was in there. He was extremely aggressive and confrontational considering all I did was politely ask for cutlery, I just don't know what his problem was. I wouldn't recommend a visit to Paul!!

Visité el café de High Street en una tranquila tarde de lunes. El café y los pasteles estaban bien. Nos sentamos en el piso de arriba, no había otros clientes en la zona de asientos. Desafortunadamente, a pesar de estar en medio de tiempos covid, las mesas no estaban despejadas y todo estaba sucio. Simplemente no era un ambiente agradable para pasar una tarde en una ciudad hermosa. De todos los lugares en los que he estado desde que se alivió el encierro, este fue, con mucho, el único lugar en el que sentí que no era higiénico.

Visité el café Westgate durante el día festivo con amigos y realmente disfruté de la comida. ¡Qué gran variedad de tartas y pasteles! Excelente quiche de puerros para empezar seguido de un delicioso dolor de almendras - au - chocolat - también probé la tarta de chocolate y la masa de crema pastelera de chocolate que también fueron excelentes. The man running the West-gate pop up store is so rude and unfriendly and when I asked for a hot chocolate, he didn't mix the chocolate with any milk so it was just luke-warm chocolate through and through. When I asked for cream he made such a mess of it and didn't even offer to clean it up or make it again. Just rude and argumentative for no reason.

Deliciously light apple tart, mediocre ham and cheese baguette. But the striking part was the messy surroundings. Floor was dirty (squashed strawberries underfoot), upholstery was clearly old and coming apart and it just felt tired and messy downstairs.

I was visiting Oxford for the first time. As the weather wasn’t great I decided to take a break for lunch to have something to eat and a cup of tea.I couldn’t believe how lush the products were! A very large selection of sandwiches, pastries and cakes.I have ordered a bacon and blue cheese sandwich, probably the best sandwich I have ever had in a very long time.The staff attention to detail was really good, they also offered me to toast my sandwich! They were all very attentive and their customers service is outstanding, they clearly enjoy working there.The place is a bit dated but clean and tidy.Would definitely recommend this place.

Entramos en este café después de caminar por la ciudad de Oxford. Había una larga cola. Llegamos media hora antes para el té de la tarde. Las damas fueron muy educadas y corteses. Tomamos café y esperamos el té de la tarde.El servicio fue rápido, los sándwiches eran frescos, los pasteles eran deliciosos. Todos lo disfrutamos. Fuimos a tomar una taza de chocolate caliente en el brunch de Oxford con mi novio el otro día y el lugar nos sorprendió. La pantalla se veía tan sabrosa y no podía decidir qué comprar. Terminé comprando la tarta de caramelo más sabrosa que he probado. Definitivamente volver allí para pasar un momento de calidad con mi pareja o familia.

Stopped here for a cup of coffee/tea after walking around Oxford. It was lovely. It wasn't to busy which meant we were able to get a table, perfect way to end a day.

Went there to have best Hot Chocolate ever with my boyfriend and celebrated his birthday there. Mohamed has served us and he has been so patient, helpful and nice. Will definitely do it again

Nothing beats a good French patisserie and Paul is one of the best this side of the Channel. Freshly baked breads, pastries, and cakes tempt the eye and the nose. We often go to this branch and stock up on baked goods (which freeze very well) as there isn't one where we live. The staff is friendly and very helpful and are very careful to pack your purchases so that they don't get crushed. My only complaint (and it is a relatively minor one) is that when they had their loyalty card, their machine was down, so I could not collect points and then when I tried to use the App (after they'd stopped their loyalty card), it would not work and I was essentially told by the staff member that it was my fault (my service provider, he said). However, this does not detract from the lovely products they sell.

This hot chick ate truly is incredible. So very very thick and rich. However it’s not so dark that you can’t handle a big cup. I have a huge sweet tooth and it’s definitely sweet enough. Shame they rarely have whipped cream or when they do it’s the fake synthetic spindly kind. Get some proper cream and this hot chocolate will be perfection.

I stopped by to pick up a takeaway croissant and a coffee, but in the end I had to abandon the coffee idea and grab a takeaway croissant. There was only one person on the till and unfortunately a very demanding customer was ordering for about 6 people, and kept changing her mind, ordered a tiny bit of jam, had an argument with one of the young people with her, added extra drink orders etc. etc. These customers do exist of course, but the total lack of awareness on the part of the person at the till was extraordinary. After 15 minutes of waiting, I finally thought it was my turn but the till person announced to the demanding customer that she was going to the back to find her some butter. When I did finally get to my 30 second transaction, there was no apology or awareness that I (and several other customers had had to wait for such a long time). I realise that the person on the till was probably being paid peanuts, but this was the worst experience in a cafe in Oxford I have ever had. I certainly won't be going back and I shall tell my friends to avoid this place too.

Stopped here for a quick lunch. Decent coffee, tasteless omelette croissant, tasty tarte but what was off putting was the fact that nobody was clearing tables. We watched several diners removing plates/cups etc so they could use the tables. Not good enough I’m afraid.

Only one of the tables upstairs was clean. The rest were dirty from previous customers. The baguette I got was so hard I couldn't eat it so I brought it back, but the staff member refused to take it back. She said that's the way it was meant to be, but it was like rock. The handrail on the stairs needs painting, as does the door into the toilet upstairs, as do the walls upstairs, all long overdue. A terrible experience, on Tue 1st October.

Paul in BKK * Emporium is our favorite coffee place. They have worlds best almond croissants. Seeing paul in Oxford made us to go and taste. It was OK, but far from BKK standard. Not as clean, croissant was same, same, but still very different.

We went in for breakfast, after seeing a sign outside offering a pastry and a hot drink for a reasonable price. On ordering, we were informed by the offhand server that the advertised price was only for takeaway. The in-store video display was showing a breakfast menu with various hot dishes like eggs benedict, but the server said that no hot food was available. In any case, the pastries were delicious and we enjoyed our breakfast in spite of less than impressive service.

Il croassaint me l'hanno scaldato superficialmente e mi sono ritrovata, tutti i giorni in cui l'ho preso, con il formaggio agli estremi sciolto e al centro duro. per il resto tutto okay ma i prezzi un po' altini

Great location and the best hot chocolate I have ever had! Great food too, especially the macaroons! Worth every penny and won’t disappoint.

We went here before exploring the city and it’s a nice place to get food! The cafe mainly sells French-style pastries, bread and coffee, and I’d really recommend the apple turnover. A little bit pricy, but still relatively affordable.

Paul is one of my favourite coffee shops anywhere in the world. The cafe in Oxford didn't disappoint me. Their hot chocolate is amazing. The place was a tad bit busy and chaotic but the staff made their best effort to serve customers and get us what we wanted.

I wanted to get my wife a cake for Christmas, the shop had no stock of the one she wanted, staff couldn’t be sure if they would get one in their normal delivery of stock, a member of staff took my order said she would try and get me one or offer me a suitable alternative, 2 days later my order was ready for collection, I can only assume she got one from another store, many thanks to Louise for the excellent service.

Un equipo de personal miserable parece decidido a desalentar a los clientes que regresan. Ignorada en el mostrador de servicio, fue testigo de cómo una chica gruñona golpeaba con bandejas para hornear y productos horneados, y observó a un barista trabajador que luchaba por preparar todos los pedidos. A pesar de que más de un cliente señaló que el barista necesitaba apoyo, no se acercó y los clientes continuaron haciendo cola durante un tiempo inaceptable para recoger sus pedidos, mientras que otros miembros del personal pasaban por el mostrador de servicio, pasaban por la habitación de atrás y barrían migajas del mostrador de la pantalla con un recogedor y un cepillo.

Ich war in verschiedenen Ländern bei Paul einkaufen. Die Freude war riesen gross, als ich gesehen habe, dass es hier in Oxford einen Paul gibt.

No hay ambiente para hablar. Probamos el croque florentino y el sándwich mozarella tostado, ambos eran horribles. El chocolate caliente era en realidad tibio, dulce, chocolate derretido. Además, si come, los precios son más altos de lo que se menciona en el menú. ¡Mala experiencia!

I have visited Paul both in the High street and in the Westgate centre. I love the goats cheese and walnut toastie also had a couple of amazing macaroons. Next time I will try something else. Love it here great quality and nice staff.

We came for morning coffee and cake

Posh cakes perfect for afternoon tea but at very reasonable prices. Good disabled access. Clean modern toilets. Also fresh French bread and filled rolls.

Our pastries and coffees were great. Sadly, our table and all empty tables surrounding ours, were full of dirty cutlery; and to our surprise, no one has bothered to clean them up so we had to clean up our table ourselves (sic!). Shame.

I had a coffee and my wife a hot chocolate. We also chose a couple of pastries and the bill came to £11 which we thought was steep. When we sat at the table my wifes chocolate was all gritty and not pleasant at all so she asked could she change for a black coffee like mine but that came and was much weaker than mine.

Went in as a couple visiting Oxford on a busy Monday afternoon. Very few customers. Dark tables and chairs with a totally drab appearance inside. Very unwelcoming first impression. Nothing on the tables to even make them look more welcoming. Hence to say after looking upstairs we didn't stay.

On a family trip to oxford we decided to have a sit and people watch for a while. Excellent location with a great breeze when sat upstairs. The pistachio croissant was beautiful and just what we needed. Vast choice

We went to Paul in The Westgate Centre for the second time in recent weeks, its lovely. Whilst in the open area, the heaters and throws make it very comfortable. We had coffee and almond croissant, absolutely yummy in both counts.

Very very busy on Easter Bank Holiday Saturday. We stood around with a loaded tray for a few minutes. Member of staff noticed and came out to clear some space for us which was appreciated.

Too much expensive. No Very gentle workers. Dirty cups. Nice ambient almost warm. Tea Good. Cakes Good enough.

Popped in to get out of the rain and warm up with a tea and hot chocolate. Seating downstairs and upstairs.

We had a light lunch cheese and ham croissant which was really fresh and warm but not toasted which was great. The coffee was excellent the coffee is strong but really good. The cakes look lovely next time will definitely try one.

Fabulous collection of pastries, cakes, breads on offer, along with a good selection of tea/coffee options. Not the cheapest place, but the quality is very good and well worth giving a try.

Topamos aquí hoy y estamos muy contentos de haberlo hecho. La banqueta carne asada era magnífica. Llegó con rábano picante que tenía una patada como una mula. Buen servicio y agradable decoración. Magnífica.

Um canto sossegado no centro de Oxford. Ótimo para uma pausa e descanso. Os produtos são muito bem elaborados e fica difícil de escolher. Porém confesso que a torta de pêssego estava extraordinária. E também o folheado de maçã (cortada em lâminas finíssimas) também está entre os melhores que já provei. Duvido que há algo que não seja no mínimo bom.

We popped in having visited the colleges. It was busy, but we did find a table ( not everyone did - 4 people walked out ) A good choice of sandwiches and cakes and a very tasty ham and mustard sandwich was chosen. Coffee was great . from now on , if I have a choice of a 'Paul' or another high street coffee shop - I will choose ' Paul'

Whilst I cannot complain about the quality of food and the friendliness of the staff, I have to take issue with the prices. I cannot see why an average independent cafe which looks no different to any other cafe can justify its high prices. They seem to think that because they have a long history in the town that this gives them an entitlement to change so much. Yes I know wages, rent, rates and so on have to be paid for. But I definitely found it hard to justify their high prices. However, I did like the food and the staff.

The food is wonderful - I really enjoyed the almond croissant. However, the ladies' lavatory needs to have a lock that works! Please fix it has not been working for several weeks.

Love this chain when I've been in London, but felt this location was lacking. My hot chocolate was delicious, but my Croque Monsieur hadn't been heated up properly, so the cheese was cloying and dry. My partner's eggs florentine were very very salty.

We only visited for a cup of tea. When we placed our order the restaurant was fairly busy but not full. We place our order for 2 x pots of breakfast tea. The female member of staff looked for a teapot and said she couldn't find one so would have to wash one up. She then took a pot from one of the tables into the kitchen and appeared later and put tea bag in pot and added water. When we sat down we found one of the cups and the milk jug both had chips in the rim. We poured the tea after letting it brew and found it very weak. I explained the situation and asked for another breakfast tea bag and the gave the staff member gave a laugh and gave me another Darjeeling tea bag. I visited the ladie toilet and found it dirty with bins over filled.
