Great restaurant. Visiting Oxford for the weekend and this was our choice for Saturday evening. Extremely busy but service was exceptional. Our party had 4 different starters and 4 different mains. They were all excellent. The 'Fillet' main was great and such great value for money. We shared a couple cheeseboards for pudding. Really good wine list and some really good value red wine's. Outstanding evening Would visit again when in Oxford. Absolute delight.

Real French Food in a French Ambience. Good food, good wine, good service at a moderate price. What more could one wish for. Avoids the chain restaurant sins of nearby locations. Still my favourite place to eat in Oxford. On a recent visit some food preparation details were missed - the soup was served lukewarm. The rest of the meal remained excellent.

Lovely little French restaurant, it’s £36.50 for a 3 course meal and the portions are generous. I’ve never fully completed a meal and this is my second time back here. I recommend the mussels they are a huge portion and very tasty!

Nice restaurant. Overall the food is are good and with good price. Most people ordered the steak. The steak is nice except the fries. The fries are not fresh. Sitting at second floor is a good idea as the window is opened and with better ventilation. Also, quiet. You can enjoy your meal there.

A lovely French restaurant that was great value for money! The starter (gravadlax au saumon et crabe) and the main (suprême de poulet) were very tasty and well done. The presentation of all the dishes was great, and it was a very nice intimate atmosphere to dine in. The waiters and waitresses were lovely and service was very fast. What disappointed me was the chocolate fondue. It was very runny and bitter but not rich like a dark chocolate at all, it reminded me of a bottle of chocolate sauce that had been heated up. The crême brûlée (not pictured) was fantastic though so I recommend opting for that instead. My biggest problem though was that there was a mix up with our reservation through no fault of our own, and the hostess was rude and not accommodating at all (despite there being an available table). At first she told us to go home and I had to argue that we had made a reservation that had been confirmed, so if it’s not on the system it’s not our fault. She eventually found us a table, it was 5.30 and it had to be returned by 8 for another guest. She could’ve said “I can squeeze you in here but I need the table back by 8 if that’s okay?” but instead she turned to the waiter she handed us over to and said “Make sure they are out of here by 8.” This made us feel very unwelcome and was an awful start to the visit. Fortunately, it did not cloud the rest of our experience and I would still recommend that you come here, but it is why I have left a 4* rating rather than 5.

It sounds strange perhaps but being able to buy a half bottle of decent wine was hugely welcome as we find a whole bottle more than we want. Lovely restaurant, a nice change to the endless supply of chain restaurants within the town. Its well priced and the food was delicious. Steak frites was well cooked with a perfect peppercorn sauce. I think they could've save ~8hours of cooking on their 10hr cooked pork belly and achieved the same result, it was also a little dry, but sauces and sides redeemed it. The restaurant has a nice ambience, tables are well distanced, was relaxed and enjoyable.

Onion soup, escargot and fondue were terrible, full of garlic. The onion soup was not dense, most likely not passed in the oven, and the onions felt like they hadn’t been cooked enough. The base just tasted of vegetable sock. The escargot were the least bad, I found the garlic to be quite overwhelming compared to the other flavours. The fondue was another failure: the cheese mix was ok (still the among the worst I have ever had), but then all the foods to dunk in were sprinkled with pieces of raw garlic. Probably it was my mistake to order a fondue outside of Switzerland/france, but I would have imagined them not to screw up quite easy / traditional dishes such as the onion soup! Also the affogato was sub par ad the ice cream scoop was too small for the coffee. Given the price, it was truly a disappointment

Felt as if we were in a corridor. No allergies were taken seriously managers were made aware ahead of time but didn’t want to know on the day, FOH staff double checked with chefs but clearly the dish wasnt made for an allergy. Overall service was poor with no real effort made when come to ordering or allergies. Felt very let down and dissapointed overall as desserts weren’t as advertised. Staff need training on allergies and an allergy matrix would be really useful because when asked for preorder and being told that “most” the menu is gluten free, isnt helpful.

The food was good, although it felt a bit too prepared in advance to accelerate the service- we litterally got our fish 3-4 minutes after ordering, the dessert Creme brulee (I mean the caramelized sugar topping,) was completely cold.. The experience of 'eating out' was less nice as we were really rushed in every step of the meal. I understand it is because they have multiple services / several reservations etc and not staff's fault but I still think this is not the way to go. One of my favourite restaurants in Oxford. We went again on Saturday. The food and service is always consistently brilliant. I nearly always have the chicken liver parfait - it is so creamy and delicious. My husband has the moules as a regular favourite choice. And we always order extra french bread - it is just too fresh to be able to resist. I had the fillet steak for my main with the leek fondue. The steak is always faultless in how it is cooked. My husband had the cassoulet which was generous and filling. The wine menu has a great selection and is reasonably priced. Got spilled by oil on my pant by the waitress, got stained and unable to wash it. Although the waitress did apologised and giving free side, it wasn’t acceptable at the start. Piere Victoire is a lovely family-owned French restaurant serving delicious traditional French cuisine at an affordable price (including some exquisite wine) with an unpretentious environment. It is good food made with fresh ingredients that has a feeling of home and comfort. For entre I had seared swordfish with a potato, shallot and chive mayonnaise salad accompanied by wasabi cream. I know what you are thinking wasabi in a French restaurant? I thought the same, but recently wasabi has been penetrating the French food scene and Piere Victoire is a great example of why. Individually the components of the dish are threads of a tapestry, where the true beauty of the dish is only perceivable when they are all woven together. The delicate balance of mild sweetness of the swordfish and shallot is beautifully cut through with the bright freshness of the wasabi cream. This dish redefines expectations of how wasabi can be used, showcasing its versatility to integrate into French cuisine. If the previous course was akin to Swan Lake; graceful, delicate, and elegant the main course is like La Tosca. Intense, unapologetic and deep in its flavours. I had the rabbit leg that was slow braised served with pommes puree, glazed carrots and Dijon mustard sauce. The decadent mustard sauce was full bodied and elevated the nuttiness of the tender rabbit. The carrots harmoniously brought sparks of sharp sweetness along with pickled onions that counteracted the bombardment of umami that gushed from the rest of the dish. This was course of triumph, braisant in its attitude and construct. For desserts I wanted to try the crème brulee as the smell of the caramel intoxicated the restaurant. However, they were sold out, if it tastes half as good as it smelled I am sure it would be a winner. My friend and I shared a chocolate fondu instead with fresh fruits and marshmallows. I guess after such a rich meal we should not be so glutenous for more. The fresh strawberries and pineapple dipped in dark chocolate perfectly closed the book on a lovely experience. In total, Piere Victorie lives up to its name. A true victory for French cuisine that is approachable; tearing down the pretentiousness that surrounds it. A must stop restaurant when you are visiting Oxford. Well worth the trip.

For the starters, we had calamari and French onion soup. The calamari was tender, and the soup was well-seasoned and perfectly balanced with the crispy bread. For the main courses, we had slow-braised duck leg and fresh mussels. As the menu stated, the mussels were incredibly fresh and creamy. They really whetted our appetites, and we couldn’t stop eating! The duck leg was tender and flavorful. The most amazing part was the rösti underneath, which absorbed the orange sauce and made the dish even more incredible. Intimate, almost too lowly lit for reading their menu. Pre fixe menu offers a surprisingly large range of choices. Starter courses of crab salad and sword fish salad both delicate and fine. The Margret de Canard was fabulous - beautifully tender, served on a potato & onion rösti. Monkfish Tail wrapped in Jambon w Risotto had very fresh and tender monkfish, though the crisp jambon overwhelmed the delicate fish a tad, but risotto was good. The disappointment of the evening was the Fondu au Chocolat, which was for 2 people. The quality of the chocolate was good, but there was too little of it. Dipping it with fresh fruits was a fine idea, but the fruits were freshly cold from the frig, which was a bit odd to dip into an almost smoking hot chocolate sauce. In the end, we were left disappointed for having paid double for whfondue an insufficient amount of chocolate fondu. Overall, I was left still a bit hungry due to the small-ish serving portions.

A.A. Gill I am not, but I'm a keen cook (Diana Henry, Nigel Slater et al) and believe myself a good judge of service and food. I'm used to cooking three courses for two or twenty. I've no idea why these recent reviewers have given five stars. Twenty-five years ago Pierre Victoire was a decent little chain delivering reliably good French food. This is not the case with this place. It opens at 6pm and, although I understand they must have plenty of diners (going to the nearby Oxford Playhouse or whatever), they certainly don't know what good service is. On arrival last Friday 12th July, we were ushered to a table but then thought we'd rather sit by the window; however we couldn't straightaway tell our smile-less waitress as within seconds she had already moved on to the next couple so we had to wait. I think we ordered the house red; it was delivered very quickly and the wine waiter was friendly. It was pleasant. The (different) waiter who took our food order was completely smile-less and had a strong accent so I had to listen really carefully. I ordered the escargots. They came within about ten minutes (the whole evening I felt they were trying to get us out asap) and weren't very hot or garlicky. I was given a normal fork rather than the special snails one; a small detail but I'm not entirely sure these guys know what they're doing. About fifteen minutes after our starters, our mains arrived. The side of haricots verts was lacklustre and lacked crunch/flavour. I had ordered the steak frites. Now I know many people find steak tricky to do well but it should be a chef's bread and butter. I had ordered mine 'medium'. It arrived rarer than medium rare. Often if a steak I've ordered arrives truly 'medium rare' I eat it anyway, but this was inedible. Mercifully the (now smiling) waitress agreed with me and sent it back. Fifteen minutes later (why so long? We needed to leave for a play) she returned with a new one (not sure I needed that when I'd eaten a good number of frites already). This time it was cooked medium - but at least a third of it was pure gristle and disgusting. Where did they buy these cuts of meat? Sweeney Todd's parlour? As they'd taken so long to deliver it I had to wolf it down. Finally, it took us a while to flag down a waiter for the bill. And then they charged us £100 plus with a service charge! The divine, 5-star (in my view) Cafe Zedel off Piccadilly charges c. £85 for two people for stunning food and drink. I'm giving 2 (rather than 1) stars because they were very apologetic about the steak, and knocked £5 off our bill, though come to think of it, £10 would have been better...

Come here if you like disappointment and a feeling of unease. Also come if you like being yelled at by staff and being over charged. Another unique aspect is having your plates taken from you whilst you are still eating off of them because your allocated time is up. If you point out that the service was slow or that the table was apparently booked for 2 hours and only 1 hour 40 had passed, also be prepared to be yelled at by the staff. My family and I have been going to Pierre Victoire since 2002. Following our meal there on Friday 11 July 2024, we will never be going back. Merci for the memories, Pierre. Shame the lasting one will be merde.

Absolute Gem of a restaurant so glad we changed our venue last minute. The restaurant was fully booked when we got there at 20.30 and staff were exceptionally busy but that didn't detract from the level of service, they were warm, friendly, approachable and attentive throughout. The atmosphere was vibrant but chilled with a pleasant background of people enjoying their eve out. We had the Mussels, Lamb Rump, Rabbit and Steak Frites followed by Creme Brulee, Chocolate Fondue, dessert wine and coffees. Food was cooked impeccably particularly the steak and lamb. Thoroughly enjoyed every element of each dish, food tasted fresh and was all hot and well seasoned. One of our party is a sous chef of 10 years herself so pleasing her can prove somewhat difficult 🙃when she knows how everything is cooked lol but she was very pleased with the rabbit, which dhes normally butchering and prepping herself on a daily basis 😀 Very high quality at affordable prices! Thank you for a very pleasant evening, we can't wait to return

Happened to wander past looking for somewhere to eat and was surprised of how busy it was for a Monday evening. They were able accommodate my wife and I. The food was authentic French cooking - simply done but full of flavour with impeccable French service too. Would highly recommend, particularly the Steak Frite!

Nice casual restaurant with great food. Close to Ashmolean museum. Nice non-pub meal with French food. Recommend highly.

This was a disappointment. We do not have any lovely photos unlike other reviewers but can say that we have been going here for more than 20 years and our meal this evening was of poor quality. The duck was overcooked, and a light grey colour. The chicken was tasteless. The green beans were musty, the rosti was tasteless also. The sauce with the duck was sharp and lacking the umami flavour one would expect. We had a house white wine which was very fruity and did not drink at all well. Suggest you avoid this place in future, we were not surprised to see empty tables when left at about 1945. The lady who showed us to our table was very pleasant but our server was brusque.

6 adults, 3 decent bottles of wine and the 2 cours prix fixe with coffee at £320. Crispy chips, juicy steaks, and all well presented with nice selection of cheeses. Good standard fare for a french chain group. Not too noisy, booked a good table on the top floor on the same day on Sat morning, but compromised to fit us in early at 6pm. Not great for prams wheelchairs or noisy children, food a bit rich for kids. We had a friendly oxford student serving. Toilets fine but a bit tight. That said on a sunny day maybe i would swap for a spot on a terrace or by the river?

A few years since we last visited and we wondered why we'd not been back sooner after eating here today. Called on spec early Friday eve, probably only got a table as 1/ we were early 2/ there was just 2 of us, and even so we had the table for 90 mins which proved to be more than ample time for 3 courses and not feel hurried. They have a fixed menu with 8 or so choices for each course, you can decide as you progress if you have room for a dessert. Each course has lots of interesting choices, service was friendly and efficient, atmosphere relaxed of a typical French bistro style. Amazingly these days no service charge automatically applied to the bill, but you'll likely want to tip at the end of your meal. Food was fantastic, very well presented and live up to it as well with the taste. We had steak tartare and crab ravioli for starter - both good, the tartare delicate and well proportioned, the ravioli with a tasty bisque. For mains monkfish on a crab risotto - really fresh and tasty, and a bouillabaisse packed with flavour. We both chose to finish with an affogato, again v good. Just under £100 in total including a decent bottle of wine - definitely will be back.

I never tire of visiting PV, & I'll never tire of giving it a well deserved 5* review. This is my unlucky for no-one 13th review of this fine establishment. So what's changed? New Chef (What a find! Welcome, congratulations & thankyou Chef) New menu (Inspired, Interesting, Delicious. The perfect balance of PV favourites + new dishes) New Staff (Still the same excellent levels of attention, courtesy, friendliness & discretion) What hasn't changed? That wonderful warm welcome (Thank you x) The excellence of the kitchen & front of house That perfect PV Bistro atmosphere (Quality in a relaxed & less than formal setting) The PV Buzz The Value for money The after dinner satisfaction of knowing just what a special meal one has just enjoyed The need to book. You'll be very unlucky to get a walk in, this is a popular restaurant My desire to return again soon (Which I will) Rupert.
