Cote Brasserie - Oxford in Oxford

Booked an early table for 6pm on a Sunday evening. Food was of a poor standard and a lengthy wait. Cannot understand all the high ratings. Will not return.

Early Sunday evening meal. Busy restaurant but not full. Took an hour for the main to arrive - others also complaining. Cabbage on Belly Pork was grey and tasteless. Pork tasteless and dry Scallops small and tasteless. Tender stem broccoli under cooked and too difficult to cut with a knife. Very poor show Tip included on the bill automatically which my wife paid against my judgement. Don’t believe in paying for poor service / poor product.

Sam was fantastic this evening. Great service, very friendly and made us feel welcome. Food was lovely. Not my first time at Côte, definitely not my last.

Cote really has gone downhill, booked for my birthday with my wife and daughter who has Coeliac disease, we clearly noted this on the booking, arrived at the restaurant waited inside a cramped entrance and were ignored for approximately 10 minutes. Eventually seated in a room off the main restaurant with an extremely noisy table of eight where we literally could not hear ourselves think! We could even hear what the waitress was saying much to her annoyance, my daughter wanted steak to subsequently be told they didn’t have any and the only option was ribeye which was more expensive and didn’t come with the choice of accompaniment she wanted, the waitress had to go and ask her manager if the could accommodate her choice to which they agreed but felt as if it was more of a favour than actually offering a service. Because of the noise from the party of eight I asked if we could move to a different table on two occasions both times this was declined, after a few more minutes we decided enough was enough and we wanted to leave by this time we had already had drinks and our starter, I went to the reception desk and said we were not happy and was presented with a bill for £35! Which I of course refused to pay given the appalling service to which the unapologetic manager reluctantly agreed. We left the restaurant and found an amazing Thai restaurant opposite where we received amazing service and lovely food and had a thoroughly enjoyable meal. Having previously had excellent meals and service at Cote in Bournemouth this experience has meant that we will never return, maybe the staff should visit the Thai restaurant opposite to see what great service is really like and learn a thing or two!

This evening I had a dinner of mushroom bourguignon, trading out the mash for frites, and it was absolutely delicious. When I ordered a cocktail to go with that, the owner (?) / bartender (?) / chef (?) came out and made a personal recommendation and provided a taste to support it. He was spot on; even before my dinner was over I was online to see where I could later order some in. The service was wonderful; quick, professional, and 'just enough' to be sure I had everything I needed without being over the top. I will definitely be back there. Completely 5 Stars.

The good thing about Cote, wherever you choose to go, is consistency of the food quality and service. Sadly my experience at Cote in Oxford was most certainly disappointing. I wanted a quick supper before going to the theatre and decided on the pris fixe menu. I ordered steak frites and crepe au chocolat for desert with a glass of house white. I was served quickly though disappointingly, though the restaurant wasn’t busy, I was seated with the glass and cutlery store behind me. My main course arrived promptly but the steak was certainly not hot. I was short of time so I simply mentioned the fact when my plate was cleared. The waiter apologised. My desert arrived, again quite promptly, but the crepe was lukewarm. It was interesting that the butter on the steak and the orange cream on the crepe had both melted so I assume both dishes had been standing in the kitchen for some time before being served. I asked for the bill and was asked by the, I assume, manager if everything had been ok. I told him both dishes had been just warm and he virtually shrugged. The waiter who took payment asked the same question and simply said he’d tell the kitchen. Neither apologised. Needless to say I will not return to Cote in Oxford, though I should add that I had exactly the same meal the previous week in Cote in Bath in a very busy lunchtime restaurant and both food and service were excellent.

Our pre-Christmas family dinner out coincided with my first day of retirement and we settled on Cote Brasserie in Oxford for the seasonal vibe and lots of choice for after dinner drinks. It was pretty full with a lively atmosphere as we perused the three menu options, with my two daughters, son-in-law, and wife selecting from the Menu de Noël, which had good veggie options, and I opted for A La Carte. Three had the Parsnip Soup, with chestnut, pear, parsley & white truffle oil, and toasted sourdough baguette, which they all agreed was one of the best soups they’d ever had, while my wife had the Prawn Thermidor; King prawns cooked in a Lobster Mornay gratin with Comté cheese, an apple & herb garnish. I had the breaded Calamari with Provençal mayonnaise. For mains, three had the Butternut Squash Pithivier, a parcel of two puff pastry discs sealing in the mushroom, butternut squash & goat's cheese, served with sage gratin dauphinois, braised red cabbage, French beans, tenderstem broccoli, Chantenay carrots & cranberry jus, again all effusing how good it was. My wife opted for the Sea Bream Grenobloise, served with a brown butter, lemon, caper & parsley sauce, potato purée, braised fennel, cherry tomatoes & rosemary croutons, finishing it all happily. I opted for Roasted Lamb Rump on a bed of anchovy braised lentils with Chantenay carrots & crispy leeks. It was recommended medium, but I asked our very nice waiter Tim, if it would be possible to get mine a little on the rare side of medium but that was not possible, but I needn’t have worried, as it was a perfect pink and the portion generous. I thought it might look a bit lonely without a potato dish so also asked for a side of dauphinois. As we chatted while waiting for our starters, and sampling a bottle of excellent red and a white wine for the ladies, we hadn’t realised it had been 30-40 minutes since we ordered, so I politely mentioned it to our waiter, who said there has been a little problem but they were on the way, and we said not to worry, we were fine. Shortly after, he and the Manager appeared with the food and profuse apologies, which we assured him was perfectly okay, but he insisted on giving us another bottle of each wine, which we thought was extremely generous. Out chosen desserts were spiced Crème Brûlée infused with star anise, cinnamon, ginger & nutmeg, topped with blackberries, Chocolate Salted Caramel Tart with raspberries & vanilla ice cream, white chocolate mousse in a dark chocolate sphere layered with a winter berry compote & freeze-dried raspberries, served with a warm lemon Madeleine and mine was the warm chocolate fondant, salted caramel sauce, hazelnut tuile and vanilla ice cream. It wasn’t a cheap night out, but the excellent food, great service and fab atmosphere was worth the cost.

Normally i great spot for pre- theatre dinner, but badly let us down this time. 45 minutes to take an order, 2 of the first choice orders were not available, then said to us that waiting time for food was 30 minutes. Given that we booked in advance for 2 hours before the show, then a wait of 75 minutes for starters really is pretty unacceptable. When food eventually arrived, it was very average - i had gone for mussels but the sauce was insipid and the mussels over cooked. Very disappointing!

The best cote I’ve attended! The service was superb and the food was lovely. Will definitely be using for the foreseeable!!

Great set menu choices and value for money. Lovely relaxed lunchtime atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and attentive. And we felt very spoilt with a complimentary glass of fizz for everyone amongst our birthday party. What a very kind gesture.

Good - if predictable - food, but outstanding service. The restaurant was very busy at 6.30 (with pre-theatre suppers before Fascinating Aida at the nearby Playhouse!); despite that all the staff were charming, efficient and helpful. Quite the best service I have had at any Cote, and Johny who looked after us would grace the grandest of restaurants. Very impressive.

I frequently dine with my wife, who's a veggie, and with a VERY fussy Ukrainian; we all enjoyed ourselves immensely here. The ambiance was casual, and the place well decorated, quiet and warm. The service was excellent (one drinks order came back incorrect, but was replaced immediately and without fuss). Polite, helpful and quick waitress, and the food hot on arrival. My wife took a veggie burger and her report was excellent, I had a pork slab, which was the best I've ever had, and the Ukranian told us her mushroom Bourgignon was "vaaree taystee" - it looked good. I couldn't resist the triple fried truffle chips, so I didn't, and the weakness was fully justified. Total bill came to only £74, including drinks and tip (10% added automatically, so beware if you don't agree with this sort of thing - I was going to leave a tenner, we were so happy, but as you wish), excellent value for posh food.

10/10 service, we have 2 recovering alcoholics in the family, of which we told our waiter, Tommy. He was AMAZING, so considerate of both of the people we were with, he gave us a tablet with the ingredients used so we could see what had alcohol in it. Food was incredible, but for all of us how considerate Tommy was made it so good!

I cannot disagree with any of the complimentary views by other customers. Our two visits were great and for the reasons. Over the last few years we have come to the same conclusions about several other branches, so their excellence seems to be systemic.

What a marvellous night out! We went to Cote Brasserie at Oxford to celebrate my 60th birthday with friends. From start to finish it was an exceptional evening. We booked a table for 6pm.to have dinner before the theatre, we received a warm welcome and waitress was lovely. No tap water available which seemed odd. Ordered 2 course from prix fixe menu, drinkd and starters arrived within 15 minutes. We were busy chatting and suddenly realised it was 7.20pm but still no sign of a main course (the show started at.8pm) and it wasn't just our table, everyone was asking , one nearby table walked out. We got up to leave just before 7.40 but was told it was coming. We wolfed the food down, the bill was majorly reduced as it should have been. Obviously a major issue in the kitchen. The food we ate was good but hard to enjoy it when eating as fast as possible.

Been to quite a few Cote restaurants but this has to be the best. Food amazingly cooked and served by very friendly and efficient staff. Chateaubriand cooked to perfection! Definitely recommend if you’re in Oxford and want a great meal.
